Being a great Charlie Shavers fan...great to see him again...
Patti Page. I played trombone in her band on a short tour in the spring of 1972. I was 20 years old. Patti was 44.
These shows were great! Too bad they didn't make more of them. Probably very expensive to produce.
Doc is one the most perfect trumpet players ever. So glad these musicians and this music has been preserved and documented. In this time, the 1980s, this style of music was a remnant of the bygone big band era. To the general record buying public , young people, it was considered passe "lounge lizard" stuff. Pop-rock guitar bands with singers. mostly quartets, were the principal form of popular music then. Michael Jackson and The Police were what was happening. Still, the musicianship of the band on this show is the best of the best. Most of these musicians continued to have successful careers working as studio musicians on countless recordings and for movie scores.
Ann Jillian would return as Cassie on It's a Living a couple of years after this aired.
Doc was channeling Chuck Maggione there a bit
A transcription of Doc's arrangement of "Tonight" (
Is that the same Bill Maher from Real Time announcing?
