Simple is the key for sure. Too many people making this way too complicated. The arm unit is a huge piece. Then you have coil/uncoil. Stick with the hinge first. This affects the spin. You will know you have it mastered when you hit every ball either straight or with a hook. At this point you switch to the body to fix the direction. It is literally that simple.

Keep them turned off and power the swing with the legs and hips. If so, the pain will never come back.

Very good. All I am trying to do it get people to try it (for more than 3 balls). If so, you will hit some mind blowing shots and hopefully you keep wanting to do it. You are at this point so please keep doing it.
Love your vids. My whole goal on downswing is to imagine I'm going to throw my club 300 yards down the fairway. The ball gets in the way of my club path and takes off!
Very good image. I have talked about this in previous tips. The problem is it is a startling feeling to stretch it out. So the person gets startled then they go right back to locked up and controlling it. This is one reason I keep telling people to do the practice swings. This way you can get used to the throwing, startling feeling until it no longer feels weird. Glad you have been doing it.
The hinged 2x4 is an awesome analogy IMO. My "locked up" swing actually hurt me so bad physically I almost gave up golf. Your teaching technique is brilliant IMO. You give me hope to keep playing without hurting myself as long as I practice and execute that easy swing. Also, decent yardage is another goal I have this summer. I wish I would have followed your teaching years ago. Better late than never!
So glad you are loosening up. I know it feels powerful to hit. We are just doing it a different way. As you see it generates a lot of speed and it never hurts your body. This is a swing for life! Try to do daily practice swings. This is the fastest way to get it. Do these 2 drills for the next 30 days: ruclips.net/video/SfIM2GWj9Cs/видео.html ruclips.net/video/hJeAcEYbvhM/видео.html If you do you will hit it longer than you ever have.
I wish I started watching your tips years ago, that illustration you showed of the amateur golfer was me for a long time, sure I hit the ball ok, but was never consistent, and towards the end of the round I was tired and sore. I never realized for the longest times I was simply hitting with my arms
I have heard that many times in the past. Glad you found me now. Glad you know see hitting is never going to work. Stay focused. This takes a little work. I like to have people doing daily practice swings at home hinging and rehinging. This way you can get it faster than waiting to go to the range once a week. So stay focused on the looseness and swinging no more than 50%. This will take the hitting out of the picture. Once you feel you have the feeling the start switching to the legs and hips for more power. I have tons of tips on hips on the channel. You can do it.
I have another question Paul that I hope you don’t mind answering, and this is something I go back and forth with. At what point do you release the club on the downswing? Is it right when you start the hips or soon you make contact with the ball, then hinge? That motion at times make me get alittle “flippy” through the shot, then I start swinging with my arms again.
You are not trying to release it unless you need to work on releasing it. My wrists are loose. The club releases on its own because they are loose. You are the top. The club is hinged. You start your body first. The lag angle is compressed until the angle cannot be held any longer. It then release due to inertia pulling the mass (club) to its widest point which is after the ball is hit. Forget seeing that flipping is wrong. Flipping is half right if you are hooking every ball. You get it every ball hooking and you are doing half right. Everyone dwells on the negative. I see the positive. Once you can hook every ball you switch to body to straighten it out. This moves the release ahead of the ball getting rid of the flip. Watch: ruclips.net/video/jEWe9Gaoqxo/видео.html ruclips.net/video/MTLQWJLRAU0/видео.html ruclips.net/video/gMVs6SZNBIQ/видео.html
Hey Paul. I play only once or twice per month, so Im always super tense and locked up. I have too many swing thoughts and end up trying to steer the ball as I hit it, which typically doesnt end up well for me. Yesterday I played a terrible round. By the time I got to hole 10, my back was hurting and thought to myself, " Im going to hit it easy and stay loose". What do I have to lose at this point.. I setup to my driver without any tension and thought "neutral grip, coil the shoulders, fire the hips". I hit the ball 250+ right down the middle of the fairway. I couldnt believe I hit that far with an easy swing and straight!!! Ive hit this far before but not with little effort. I was unable to salvage my round due to all the mistakes I made beforehand but I was hitting the ball so much better with all of my woods and irons, puring them! Couldnt believe it :) By the end of the round I thought, golf doesnt have to be difficult, we just make it difficult! Ive always struggled buying in to your concepts even though Im a subscriber because, how can it be this easy? Well, Ill never go back to my old ways. Thank you !
Wow, that's awesome! So glad you tried it but as you said you had nothing to lose. Glad you are on board now. As for not getting out much just do some practice swings at home. It really doesn't take much so you master a few moves. I would be hinging and rehinging. Surely you know how to do this now if you have been following me. This will keep your wrists loose. Then hold the club in the air at knee high and do swings. Up in the air there is nothing to hit. This allows you to feel your legs and hips powering the swing not the hands and arms. If you just wait until the next time you play you will try to hit the ball with the arms due to human nature telling you to hit it and hit it hard. If you are doing swings at home you will get used to using the legs and hips and it will become important to you. So every time you go out you will be thinking of using them. So just do a little work. If you can keep hitting it like that one then maybe you will play a little more. You will certainly have more fun and play pain free.
Thanks for the super amazing info! I realized that I wasn't twisting my arms at the end of my swing + hinging which gave me a massive blister on my left thumb as a right-handed golfer.... One question, does this hinging method also apply to irons???
Glad you liked it. Yes, irons too. You definitely need to rehinge. If not you are slowing the club down to stop it short. Watch: ruclips.net/video/URlX7BBFohc/видео.html Also: ruclips.net/video/M868QsTlGt4/видео.html ruclips.net/video/6ZeTqcz2pmE/видео.html ruclips.net/video/a8uIUyRF52Y/видео.html
Glad you are doing well. That's great distance. As for consistency, know your limit. For my I swing at 80%. Anything about that is the gray zone where the ball could literally go anywhere. So I try to stick to my 80% and be content with hitting fairways not hitting it 340. Also you need to watch your ball and know exactly what to do to fix your swing. This one should help: ruclips.net/video/bLskGy7rulo/видео.html
Thanks Paul, I like the ‘hinge, unhinge’ analogy in fact it’s my driver swing thought (tbh with my other clubs too lol). Standing over the ball I am starting to feel like a door… 🚪
I have been stuck at that 190/200 yards for forever 5 wood 3 wood driver all the same pretty much as my club head speed is maxed out. I feel like I am bunting the ball which I was. I finally tried two swings first all arms and the result was predictable and actually looked like my normal swing result. Then I shut off my arms starting small and wow. You're a genius! I must ask though do you think about club face control low point control ect or is that all taken care of by using the body?
Sop glad you tried loosening and saw the result. Surely, you will never go back to hitting hard every again right? Clubface control - simple physics of mass swinging around an axis. If you are trying to hit you may twist the face. Physics repeats 100% of time in life. Watch: ruclips.net/video/dw8mMH7Cr4Q/видео.html Low point is from this: ruclips.net/video/EDlwfq_ZBvE/видео.html ruclips.net/video/_ji_zykZlY8/видео.html So stop hitting with the arms. Use your body and you will get the right fundamentals to allow the other stuff to happen.
Triggering the backswing? You can do it numerous ways. Left shoulder back, right shoulder, both shoulders, back to target, turn bult buckle, turn right hip whatever works. You need to experiment. Not everyone is the same. I like to do it with the body not the hands.
I've been working on this hinge rehinge for awhile. I'm having a problem my hands seem to take over my swing . I don't feel like I'm in sync with my body
You are mastering your arms first so you will feel them. You have it mastered when you rarely ever put slice spin on your shots. At this point you are remembering the feeling of the release as you switch to lower body to straighten it out. Get step 1 then move to step 2. Problem is everyone wants to hit great shots in 1 step which will never work.
Paul, I am using my body (and crushing it), but since my driver head is lagging behind my body turn the club face is open at impact. Should I intentionally release sooner or are my wrists too tight keeping me from releasing? I don't have this issue with my hybrids or irons.
Paul, any tips on hitting 100-110 yard shots to upside down bowl style greens that are elevated on all sides and making the ball stay on without rolling off? One of the courses I play regularly has a first hole par 4 that the owners have said "good luck getting a bogey on hole number one" about so I'd be super happy to get a 5 on it but I've been getting 6s-7s (and some 8s!) and that's just no way to start a round of golf. It's a dog leg right that takes me a driver followed by a fairway wood to get to that 110-100 yard area, but after that the ball just doesn't want to land on, and more importantly stay on, the green with my PW or 9 irons and my SW (which I know would go higher and stick better) doesn't go that far at the moment. Only after a skulled shot that rolled up the frontside and lost speed going up the elevated hill surrounding the green on all sides have I seen a ball stay on the green. Usually, though everybody I play with lands short, far, left, right, and if they're lucky to land on the green it always rolls off. The uphill chips and putts after not landing on the green are another bear to contend with due to having to chip up to a green that's at shoulder level, and uphill putts that stop dead on their way and/or are hit too hard and creep back into downhill which almost sends them all the way off the green. It's meant a lot of great 1st and 2nd shots YES's followed by OH NO Bad News Bears stuff that puts us in a bad mindset from the get go. It's tough to start a round with double, triple or quadruple bogeys but I see it all the time on that dreaded hole. It doesn't help that the ground around the green isn't kept very well and is a mixture of hard dirt, crab grass, and mud. It ain't easy bein' (on the) green as Kermit would say. I am at a loss as to how I should plot out that hole. Any advice would be great. Thanks.
Sounds like an unplayable hole. Why don't the members get together and say something? There are no real tricks. From 100-110 you are hitting a full shot. This would be a higher lofted club so it should stop but you have to hit enough club to get the ball pin high anything is will roll off the front or back. Tell me what course it is and I will look it up on satellite view so I can see the layout.
@@paulwilsongolf It's called Fort Snelling Public Golf Course in MN. It's just a 9-hole course that's first come first go with no tee times. It's usually pretty busy and beat up, but it's super convenient for after work golf. It's a par 36 but so far none of the people I've played with has broken 40 on it so that's the summer goal right now (the best has been a 41). Thanks!
That is a tricky hole. They are telling you that is unfair. So I would take it as being just that. Green is 60 long x 50 wide. Not the smallest but the no the biggest either. Not sure I really have any magic you can use. You need to stick that approach shot every time unfortunately that isn't going to happen. What I would do is play somewhere else or if you are playing with people who feel the same then make up some sort of rule to play that hole. This poor first hole is probably hampering your game because you are unfairly 3-4 over after 1. So this can't be doing anything positive for your game.
@@paulwilsongolf Sounds good. I'll do my best to stick that approach shot onto the green but if that doesn't happen I'll just consider that first hole nothing more than a warmup and not let it bother me the rest of the round. If it does ever happen I'll consider it a lucky bonus. It feels good that I can at least get it to the 100 yard area in two shots so I'll try to just be happy about that and try not to get mad about any misfortune that happens after that. Maybe I'll try to talk my friends into thinking about that hole as a par 5 instead of a par 4 with a shot for everybody. That might help the hulk anger that boils up in everybody. Thanks again, Paul.
Hi Paul, I enjoy all your videos, but I have a very simple question: I try as much as I can to play in a relaxed way, but does the shaft have an importance in the gesture, I mean if we have two different shafts will we have two different results? Ex: I have a rather slow swing and I have a rather stiff shaft, so I have difficulty feeling the whip because I don't feel the driver's head.
Glad you liked the tips. Thanks for your support. Shafts are important. There is no industry standard for shafts though. So one companies stiff shaft is not necessarily everyone's. Whenever I get people saying their clubs are light I usually hit them and to me they feel heavy. So this is the person hitting with arms. You say your swing is slow but the clubs feel light. Not sure your arms are loose enough. The weight of the shaft is not going to make that much difference to the feel of the head. I think you need to be looser. You can also get your clubs weighed at a professional fitter to see if they are the right weight. Years ago I remember Ping's being lighter than any other clubs. Not sure if that is the case now but back then it was noticeable. This will put to rest if it is the clubs or not. Then do some of these drills: Check your arms first: ruclips.net/video/wcCHnsaw2bg/видео.html Here are tips to loosen you up: ruclips.net/video/bCuIUE8iA70/видео.html ruclips.net/video/eyR514QvAoI/видео.html ruclips.net/video/zXEdLYHq8GY/видео.html ruclips.net/video/T-dK-aX4c6U/видео.html I would video your swing too. If there is any hitting you will be doing a chicken wing and potentially casting the club too.
Well, I would take the driver in and get it checked. If it is the right weight then you need to loosen up until it feels unmistakably heavy. I have had students say their clubs feel light over the years. I pick them up and they do not feel light. It is them trying to hit with their arms. I would check this: ruclips.net/video/wcCHnsaw2bg/видео.html

Watch:

Couldnt believe it :)
By the end of the round I thought, golf doesnt have to be difficult, we just make it difficult!
Watch:

Going to certainly try that on the range tomorrow, and hopefully get some more distance.
Very good. Don't quit after 3 balls. Keep doing it for at least a bucket. Let me know how you do.
@@paulwilsongolf I went through two buckets! It does make the swing easier. I'm hitting to between 250 and 300 yards.I just need consistency :)
This one should help:
ruclips.net/video/bLskGy7rulo/видео.html
Great lesson Paul, thank you.
When I mock your loose swing, I swing great. When I try to do too much and swing too hard, Yuck!
So stay loose. How much convincing do you need?
Thanks Paul, I like the ‘hinge, unhinge’ analogy in fact it’s my driver swing thought (tbh with my other clubs too lol). Standing over the ball I am starting to feel like a door… 🚪
Very good. This is the image. I explain it as a hinge on a door to all of my students so you are totally on track with that thought. Keep at it.
Loved it!
Thanks.
Thanks Paul !
You're welcome.
Watch:

Low point is from this:
ruclips.net/video/EDlwfq_ZBvE/видео.html

So stop hitting with the arms. Use your body and you will get the right fundamentals to allow the other stuff to happen.
Nice example video.
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
What move do you suggest to trigger your swing. Move triangle, feel left shoulder move, move club straight back ?? I have always struggled with this
Triggering the backswing? You can do it numerous ways. Left shoulder back, right shoulder, both shoulders, back to target, turn bult buckle, turn right hip whatever works. You need to experiment. Not everyone is the same. I like to do it with the body not the hands.
There are a lot of golf gadgets out there, what makes SwingWrite better than others, in your opinion please?
Made of solid steel, good weight, can't fake the snap.
@Paul Wilson Golf Thanks for the reply I will keep working at it.
Paul, I am using my body (and crushing it), but since my driver head is lagging behind my body turn the club face is open at impact. Should I intentionally release sooner or are my wrists too tight keeping me from releasing? I don't have this issue with my hybrids or irons.
Glad you are trying it. You are missing the timing of the body and the release. Watch:

Thanks
You're welcome.
Then do some of these drills:

I would video your swing too. If there is any hitting you will be doing a chicken wing and potentially casting the club too.
@@paulwilsongolf Thanks for the advice I'll look into it, very carefully But for my driver, actually I don't feel the club head unlike my 3 wood
@@paulwilsongolf Thanks for the advice Paul, I have made an appointment for next month with a fitter in Biarritz (France) to evaluate all my clubs. But I won't give up on your advice, I need to combine them: Clubs/.Bbody Swing, for a better performance.
