  • An in depth review of the Antonio Picado Model 53 classical guitar. In this review, we take a look at both the cedar and spruce top version of the Model 53 from the highly regarded Antonio Picado workshop.
Antonio Picado guitars are made in Berga, Spain. Led by Ángel Genis and Carlos Prat, every Antonio Picado guitar is meticulously crafted by a small team of luthiers with an emphasis on producing guitars of the highest quality.
The Model 53 is one of Antonio Picado's entry level classical guitars. A full solid wood, handcrafted guitar made with high quality materials. The Model 53 features a solid spruce or cedar top, coupled with Indian Rosewood back/sides with a Honduran cedar neck and an ebony fingerboard. A glossy nitrocellulose finish gives a deeper level of protection. The pristine character of this finish is a fitting match for the high level of quality given to the fine details of this guitar.

I bought a cedar version back in 2013 and it’s still my go to every day guitar. The sound is just beautiful, and it’s so enjoyable to play. The cedar is wonderful for playing anything with a more romantic vibe, it’s just gorgeous. I tried about 20 guitars at this price point and even higher before I found a shop in Hamburg that sold the Picado. 10 seconds after I played it I was hooked. It can’t be beaten. ❤

@@user-il3sf7mw7f These are Knobloch strings which came installed on the guitar straight from Picado. I feel like they offer just the right balance on this guitar.

Excellent review. I may have missed finish and tuners. I believe nitro which is better than the heavy poly finishes.

Was the tuning mech. changed from the stock guitar? If so, what is the name Brand (updated) mechanism?

These are the stock tuners provided by Antonio Picado. I've not changed them out for any others, as the stock tuners do an excellent job; stable, reliable with smooth tuning action.

I think your take on them both is spot on, there is a little more warmth to the spruce top that I prefer, so my pick would be the Spruce. I really enjoyed the comparison, keep them coming 👍

So is it worth it to pay more to get the model 54 or model 53 is good enough. Thank you

That's a great question. I guess it depends on what you need the guitar for. If you need something that is capable of taking you to Grade 8, the Model 53 would do it admirably. If you're looking for something with even more realism and projection, the Model 54 would be worth consideration. They're both fantastic guitars, but like most things in life, you get what you pay for. I think if your budget stretches to the 54, I'd be tempted to go for it. If not then the 53 would still be an excellent choice. I hope this helps, but feel free to get in touch directly via email if you'd like any further advice.
