- Whats up! Here's a video explaining how i replaced a oil Filter Housing on a 2017 BMW 330i. You can find the parts in this video at your local BMW dealer or on fcpeuro.com. Feel free to ask me any questions in the comments below. I hope this video helped. Stay safe.
Thank you sir, helped me tons on replacing mine.
@@LMLFE you're welcome. I'm glad the video was useful
My 2017 330i is in the shop having the water pump housing and thermostat housing replaced at a sweet 2k and my mechanic just called and said the oil filter housing needs to be replaced for another 2k.. wtf man can only has 55k miles. Im hoping Amsoil will save me any engine damage.. 😢 have you ever heard of all that going bad all at once??? TIA
Wow it looks like you got hit all at once. Its not usually likely for all to fail at once but it can happen. Once that plastic on the oil filter housing starts to heat up, it's easy for it to Crack and fail.
2017 BMW 330i same thing with me brother…replaced my water pump thermostat and some small hose a year ago …car is in the shop right now getting this oil cooler replaced 😂😭🤬Fkn BMW …
Do you have to drain any coolant beforehand? And after bleeding for 12 mins do you run engine and add coolant to reservoirs until full? Thnks
Actually the newer BMW are using green coolant. My 2019 has green and I was confused. Lol
Hi, i am having the same leak. the mechanic is saying to replace the oil cooler as well. Is that necessary or can I just replace the housing?
Worse video that I ever seen on RUclips u supposed to show the process
Coolant is only good for 30,000 miles.
Cool thanks I just took my car to BMW dealership they want $3,200 to replace it Look like I will be getting a little oily this weekend
Same here
Thx for the tutorial, I´m going to do this hella job...without car lift
No problem. A lift would definitely help lol but you got this 💪
How much is the cost of these parts?
When you put everything back, did you also put a new oil filter and added a little bit more oil to the engine?
It came with a new filter. And I always do an oil change whenever I do this job
A saw this problem most of the time in cars with more than 70k miles
Never use uro parts for bmw
@impressiveautorepair How did you get the housing that's in front of the bottom right bolt to move and give you that much wiggle room? I removed the lower screw and the one above it and it barely moves at all. Maybe a quarter inch. Did you remove both the bolts at the very top of the housing? It doesn't look like the right one is what's stopping it from moving but maybe it is what's causing me the problem. Thanks.
Hey, yes I removed all of them. Then it gave me the extra slack I needed.
This was very useful. I had mine replaced, but now my A/C is not blowing cold air and tried all the buttons for MAX A/C - anything could have caused this stop blowing cold air? after replacing the oil filter housing.
Check to make sure the a/c compressor is plugged in. It could have plugged out by accident during the job
Do you have the part number for that outlet you replaced?
Just had this happen to me on 2017 330i x drive. Left me stranded - parked the car and came back to a huge coolant puddle under the car. This is the 2nd plastic part on the back side of the engine to fail and leave me stranded. Very disappointed in BMW design. Won’t recommend new BMWs to anyone and won’t be buying any more myself.
Sorry to hear that man. I do wish they made that out of aluminum from factory. That would have been much better.
In Europe they must use recycled plastic no virigin plastic... a heap of trash
Thank you! but screw this job! Just did one, the X drive has the drive shaft on my way too 😢 I did removed the mount from the oil cooler but I also there is a screw on a front lower pocket of that rear oil cooler, man! that was pain in the neck. Once that was out I undid the top and bottom oil lines, and YES! finally was able to get my fingers on it! *** Note: this isn’t the average DIY *** You need to know what you doing! and it was also like an 8 hr job for me.
That URO part is trash I don't remove the intake manifold either but it's more room is you do. I just remove the DME
Thank you very much for a great video! Doing this myself this weekend. May I ask how many kilometres/miles your car had when you did the job?
And hopefully you will make more B48 videos, plugs, waterpump, etc.
Hey I'm glad you found this video useful. The car only had 78k miles on it.
And I will definitely do more videos on b48. I get them in all the time.
To replace the oil filter housing do you only need the new oil filter hosuing? also what is the part numbere for the water pipe?
is that a serious question? you answered your own question in your question
Hi Richie, Happy Memorial Day weekend. Well I’m all up in it, got the intake off. How do you gain access to that lower right bolt? I can’t even see it. The trans cooler is in way, water dripping down from the trans cooler I think it’s coming from the housing. And like I said it was replaced only 30 thousand miles ago. Think it’s leaking again. But this time it falls on me to fix. If you could let me know how you got to that bolt I’d be really grateful. Cheers Mate Kevin from NJ ☘️🍻
Hey man happy memorial Day! I explain it From 7:20 to 9:30. In the video. Fast for to those times and you'll see what to do. Good luck on your repair 🍻
That’s the bitch bolt Kev. The hardest one.
Yup I got the 2017 dodge witht the 3.2. Same problems. Thanks another car companys
My 340i will need this later and I will remember to get the plastic parts around the housing that you noted. Good work and thank you for your detailed video.
Thank you! I appreciate. Hope everything works out well for you!
I hear mostly that coolant is leaking from that part but you know if ever happend with oil?
Clearly the wrong type of coolant caused the problem..(ethylene glycol- propylene glycol) It should be the first. Mixing them causes corrosionproblem and lumps.
Happened to me and I only used BMW coolant. The cause is trying to use plastic on a critical part in an environment (heat and vibration) not conducive to plastic.
What should we use?
My oil filter housing failed at 56K miles on my 2018 430i (out of warranty). All prior service was done on time by the dealer. I had to have the car towed to the dealer $100, cost was over $3000 to replace. It is not the coolant, it is not the oil filter cap that is too tight. It is the plastic, when exposed to heat, it degrades and fails over time. My third one will be aftermarket all aluminum.
Notice you’re using the uro aftermarket housing. How’s the quality of it in your experience? BTW the green coolant might be the newer coolant that BMW started using around 2018 or something. They’re supposedly interchangeable but I would go with whatever the car came with.
The quality is great bro. Haven't had any come back in with issues. Still wish they made it aluminum tho. And thanks for that info about the coolant. I didn't know that 💪
@@impressiveautorepairDoes the Uro part use different material for the seal guide that fails on the OEM? The one on the OEM is removable and feels like bonded paper.
My BMW had green coolant in it and I also bought new coolant from BMW and it was green
Is it possible for the car to lose coolant from the oil filter housing leak to a point where the engine overheats without any coolant warning on the car? The only warning that came up was the engine overheated..
Thank you brother thats tomorrow mission first time doing it, I also saw a video about this without removing the manifold have u ever tried it??
No problem man. Hope this video helps you for tomorrow. I never tried it without removing the manifold. That must take some good skill. I'm curious to see the process on that. Good luck on the repair bro!
Hi, any advise of how to diagnose this? I have a coolant leak I went under the car and what Im seeing is that is dripping from what it looks like the oil cooler
No specific way I diagnosed it. I just shined a light from up top to see if around the housing is wet or has residue from coolant leak around the housing to the engine. Also I lifted the car up and see coolant dripping in the rear of the motor around where the transmission and engine meets.
If you have a leak ending in your oil plug purge you should inspect your intent and your housing (can be any of them).
Also if your auxiliary deposit is cloudy... Check it asap
Do I need to discharge cooling water and engine oil to replace it? Does it matter if there is no vacuum injector when injecting additional cooling water?
How long did it take you to replace?
Took me about 2hrs
Thank you. Would you happen to know the torque specs on the oil cooler and oil filter housing? Appreciate it thank you
No problem. Glad this helped. I'm not sure of the torque spec. I just got them snug then used a ratchet to tighten them down a bit. It's still plastic so try not to over tighten
Thank you
I have this problem right now with my 330i and my car at 91k
Thanks you! About how long should this take?
Should take about 4hrs or so straight through
Is this the B48 same engine on 2023 X3 ?
Yes it is. 4 cylinder b48
It would have been useful to see how you took it apart in a step by step process to be able to do it as well. But good video.
Thank you for explaining it.
An experienced BMW technician told me that the reason why Oil Filter housing on B4x engines might leak is that the filter cup was over-torqued during oil filter replacement. The torque is 25 Nm, NOT Ft-lb! It is enough do do once to damage the housing. Well if you done at a quick lube shop once, you know why it leaks now
That's good to know. Thanks for that info
That can be a reason. But what I've seen is these leaking at the coolant channel where it holds the gasket collapsing from the heat and squishing that gasket causing the leak.
Could you tell me what the torque spec is for the bolts on a 2016 bmw 430i? Im sure it would be similiar
I got an oil leak after changing mine has that happen to anyone
I just did this repair on Monday and now all the sudden my A/C is blowing hot air. Was working totally fine before I did the job. Anything possibly related to this repair that would effect the A/C?
Whats up. Did you bleed the cooling system? You probably have air pockets in the cooling system
@@impressiveautorepair oh shoot, I forgot to bleed the system. You think that would effect the A/C air? Is it too late to go back and bleed the system since it's been almost a week now since I did the repair?
@btcs_41 it's not late. You should bleed it. It can be related. But if not, check your freon pressure.
@@impressiveautorepair I bled the cooling system, didn't make a difference in the AC temp. I went to AutoZone to get one of those A/C recharge kits, it says that you should have a PSI reading of somewhere between 35-45 psi, when I attached the can the reading immediately read 118 psi. Something tells me its a little more than just needing a freon recharge.
@btcs_41 make sure the a/c compressor is plugged in and didn't come out during your repair. You can get a high reading if the compressor is bad or not plugged in
Looking for a metal housing for a 2017 430i, do you know a good site?
No not that I know of, sorry.
Ebay only, let me know if it's worth the money lol
Just got one off Amazon but haven't installed yet..😅 not sure if I trust it. Did you ever find it?
@@AntonioAlvarez-v3p yes, got it from the BMW online store which was cheaper, I installed it myself saved 3400
It's best to use the upgraded aluminum oil filter housing
I've been looking. I haven't found any. What site did you find it from? That would definitely be a game changer
@@impressiveautorepair they are now on fcp euro
For a 17 530 is the same way to fix
my daughter's 2017 BMW 330i has a coolnt leack . I took car at BMW of Lynwwod in WAshington State. because we have an extenden warranty . I can't believe it they charged $ 3,052.35 for water replacment and they said the oil filter housing leak coolant too, but isn't cover by the waarnty . Also, they gave me an estimate for $5,057.62 14 hours labor $3,850.00 , parts $687.89 other $519.73 total of $5,057.62. I can't believe it . after I saw your vidio doen't see tha bad to replace the oil filter housing. I meant for the 14 hours of labor . I'm GM technitian and I don't think this job takes 14 hours as the dealer said. thank you for expalining all the datails on the video.
thats insane... these mfs charge up the A**
this just happened to me same car same year and same price 5k 14 hours of labor - oil filter housing
This job deff takes 14 hours
What were the parts you used?
I got the oil filter housing and water pipe from my local bmw dealership.
Do you have the part number for the extra water pipe?
SKU: BMW-11127810707
@@impressiveautorepair thank you!!
@@christophergillespie4476 no problem.
nice i didnt know about the water pump activation. thx i'm about to do this job tmr.
where are you from?
sorry for the late response. Hope the job went well for you and Im from Florida.
Hey Richie my boy, I’m all up in it I’m the driveway northern NJ, got those two bolts off the trans cooler but it still won’t move out of the way to get that bottom bolt off the oil filter cooler. Is there another bracket or bolt on this thing? Thanks my man. ☘️🖐🏻
did you figure it out ?
Thanks! Now I have to decide whether to fix this piece of crap or trade it in for a better car. 2017 430i with 109k on it. Love the car except for the cooling system. So many issues.
I have the same exact car & problem. BMW says it will take 11 hours to do this but it looks like this guy did it in 20 minutes …???
He only shows the highlights. I did it yesterday, and it took me at least 9 hours. There are some time consuming steps in the manual that aren’t done in this video. There are steps I left out as well. Some may have consequences, but hopefully not. It is a very difficult job though. There are soo many parts in the way and the space to work in is sooo tight. I cursed this car and its makers to hell and back. I’d say 11 hours is not unreasonable at all.
I fixed it. Now, seeing the part that failed, I am really disappointed in BMW. That little seal guide is an insert that appears to be made of bonded paper. It is just too perfectly wrong to be an accident. Planned obsolescence is real. I just can’t see how this could have been done by an intelligent engineer without it being a planned point of failure. There’s no need for this piece to have been so much weaker than the surrounding material.
@@paulwhite686 wow! I’m sorry you had to go thru all that. Bonded paper is completely insane! Thanks for your reply!
Thank you so much
Glad I can help
Is there a site you recommend to purchase parts? I was thinking of buying an aluminum one but not sure
www.bmwpartsnow.com/oem-parts/bmw-oil-filter-housing-11428596283
Aluminum would be great. But I don't know if they make one for it
@@impressiveautorepair thank you...I looked them up, but don't see much info on them. Have you purchased parts from them?
@@jorgemartinbg yes I have. Multiple times. Never had an issue with them.
@@impressiveautorepair thank you for your prompt replies. I intend on keeping the car for ever. It's perfect for me and I want to get good parts. I work on the car so for me it's extra important that this works for I need it to work. They're a little cheaper in price at this site. BMW costs 420 plus tax, on the site it is $314. I hope the manufacturer is of good reputation
