Informative lecture, Mr Beatnick's savannah Ep was one of my favourite releases of 2013, and I think he's a great producer but was put off by the way he compared his MPC to Ableton. Embrace both new and old technology they both bring something to the table.
He wasn't really comparing it the way you're implying.. He was saying he uses an older method, and the newer stuff is great - but complex.

I love the information here. But if baffles me that with so many talented sound guys in the audience and on stage, no one could get that feedback and squeaking from the mics to stop. It really makes it hard to listen to.

Even people who wathced live probably did not learn as much as they could have if they were seeing the screen.

yea i hafta agree with u guys.. the best sampling creativeness ive seen on youtube so far is from a guy named slik da relic's channel.. u should check him out.. as well as all the other Hip Hop producers
I never understood why people who use software on a laptop feel the need to justify what they use it for, or why. Something I've noticed in so many videos. I don't the software people should have some kinda shame, or let a hardware user tell them they aren't doing it right. As a straight hardware kid, I can say I know plenty of people at my school who have gangs of nice hardware, but can't really do much at all with it. Or it's garbage. Then I can name a kid who uses an old desktop PC and uses the typing keyboard to do his thing, and can run circles around them.
Only way I would go around trying to persuade people to use what I use, is if the company was paying me good money to do so xD
If your on Software.. Don't feel like you have to give a reason for why you use it. Should stop letting that matter to you. Or anyone tell you otherwise. I hate that discouraging sh*t.
Hardware works better for me is also what I said.
But I won't put others down who don't use it.
I think that's why so many people with software constantly have to justify why they use what they use.
Personally I can't imagine self imposed shame... Get down with what you get down with. All that matters is what it sounds like.

Not expecting an answer. But does anyone know how to "transpose" a sample without changing its tempo?
Get yourself a copy of Ableton, Logic, Reason--Legally vs illegally; I don't care to know how, but you'll need it--or any other DAW with "time-stretch"/"warp" Capability. Ableton definitely has the most intuitive, and easy to use warp function, IMO. Anyways, those DAWs give you the ability to stretch the audio, from the entire length of a song, down to individual notes, allowing you to speed up or slow down whatever you want. RUclips is littered with tutorials on warping and time stretching; some very helpful, but most, pretty shitty. The good ones are pretty easy to spot, though; lots of certified trainers post tutorials onto RUclips. Be warned: time-streching isn't magic, and isn't a universal fix for all of your problems. Some audio is just too fast or too slow, to be sped up or slowed down, to your preferred tempo. After a certain point, nasty artifacts, hisses, gaps, etc. will start to present themselves. Listen to the sample, at the beginning of this song; a perfect example of what warped sounds sound like, when stretched too far. /watch?v=m26XUDUVPcA It's like the sampling equivalent to clipping. Some times, the extremes sound pretty cool, but most times it fucking sucks, so avoid excessive time stretching, or else YOUR AUDIO WILL SUFFER!!!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAH!!!! Good luck, rookie.

sayanchik I think the point here is that there are different methods of doing things. It'd be boring if everyone did everything exactly the same wouldnt it.

why is it that most of these "pro videos" i see end up making terrible beats. very mediocre. lets be honest this can all be done in 30 mins for a track like that. where is the epic content? this could be done on a volca alone.
Got nothing from this, shame. Saying that, got a couple of laughs from Mr Beatnick (who I have respect for and seems like a nice bloke), but the video on the whole felt like a bit of a chore with no pay off, especially the first half. Won't comment on the the sound.....unless you count that ;)

Phil Perry Exactly. A REAL muso is someone with actual talent, say for example, a pianist or a cellist or a singer (who can actually sing without the use of a computer). Almost anyone with half a brain can take a bit from a song and loop it.

How many times have I heard this: I played piano, guitar etc.This is what a lot of people say and then it turns out they had a couple of lessons and played for 1 maybe 2 years with no success.
Btw, piano is the easiest instrument and no one except in the 15th Century thought it was a technical monster since it's straightforward and quite self explanatory.
***** I have nothing against electronic music, in fact, I quite like it. I'm a guitarist and singer and I have tried adding electronic sounds to my music. But the act of sampling just pisses me off. If you were sampling your own sounds then fair enough but someone elses songs is essentially riding off of someone elses success. I'm pretty open minded about music and genres, I like almost everything from death metal to experimental jazz. I don't feel threatened by electronic music, I embrace it. I just dont like it when people take other peoples stuff and claim it to be theirs.
