I am watching this high af on painkillers and anticonvulsants and it is both an absolute trip due to the early 90s production and writing, and super informative at the same time. Best video I've found in a while.
Heh, yeah... definitely had some weird as hell dreams after a serious 48 hour studio sesh sponsored by dopamine modulating molecules! I thought I'd bore myself to sleep on the tail end with some choice hypnotic assistance, and holy shit was I in for a weird night... left this on repeat, and kept waking up to the lesson being interrupted by hallucinations of a genie telling me to break studio equipment and ruin the mix, and other such weirdness. Watching it outside a total hypnagogic dream state was wild, turns out I wasn't hallucinating in the slightest!

This Video was like a Dark-Arts book hard to find when I was trying to understand what mixing even was. The combination of the sensical artwork and the information is still the best Tutorial ive seen, it just makes sense
Honestly just now finding this video after being in college for music technology for 2 years now makes me a little sad. This is such a great explanation of the fundamentals of mixing (dynamic, spectral, and temporal processing, panning, etc.) that I just couldn’t figure out when I was first mixing in highschool
I got to listen to this video on 2 well placed studio monitors. It's one of the best mixed videos I've seen. It's quirky but David puts the money where his moustache is.
He literally taught me so much in the span of a little over 2 hours. I feel like I can approach my mixes with confidence. I like that he showed us with the equipment so we can use the knowledge on any DAW. I'm a very visual learner so this was awesome.
This video is like a friend who just reappeared from a decade long trip and now he just stands right before You. Thanks RUclips algo to digging this out for me again. Have to save rewatch it.... 🙂

Major points for the deep nostalgic value. Even in 2021, this is still one of the best visual explanations of how mixing actually works! This is almost essential watching for those who wish to mix for film/television!
.. I cannot believe I’m being suggested this video right now, in the culminating weeks of 2021 after years of recording and mixing and watching useless videos. Like, this video is the most practical, straight to the point mixing/EQ lesson tutorial with an experience I’ve ever seen and it’s from 1990. Good god. 10/10. Tysm
im 21 and ive been trying to learn production to almost no avail for at least 6 or 7 years. there are all these ideas and concepts that as human we understand because weve heard them an indescribable amount of times throughout our life but learning some of the root language and exact defnition of these concepts has never really felt like public information. then i found this extremely outdated but insightful and educational video, actually pure gold. thank you old guy
@@TheSozeone you understand what i mean. the concept of sonics are perpetual but the visuals and delivery of the video is very vintage. i liked it never said i didn’t.
Modern digital recording faces exactly the same principles in mixdown but with the absence of battling against lack of 'headroom' (space where white noise occured opposed to actual sound when turning stuff up), everything in it is completely relevant and applies to digital multitrack mixing down with DAWS because a DAW is just a digitally analagous copy of its analog hardware predecessors.
I've been using this kinda method (poorly, and without much success till this video) for years, it's gold dust! When you're out on your own trying to figure out a musicians "tone to end all tone" sound, it's so useful. Even with the multitrack stems, the bassline for Hysteria by Muse is some WILD shit... when all is said and done, that bassline is a layer of heavily processed DI, a clean amp, an amp with a distortion pedal into it, an amp with a fuzz pedal into it and a synthesizer mirroring every note. I've got the bass Chris W uses, the strings he uses, all the pedals, and amp/cab sims that get 95% of the way there... but how do you layer that?! Turns out that each element has a specific place in 3D with various hard EQs adjusting the depth through brightness, along with the usual panning. Eventually there's this moment where it all comes together, and even though I'm not sure I'd be able to reverse engineer my mix decisions, the result is exactly what I was looking for. Then round that off with soul destroying levels of surgical EQ and compression on the DI for a monumental solid puck of low end, some compression, saturation and overall gentle EQ, and boom... something that kinda gets close. No one told me that I should be focusing WAY more on production than mixing, I kinda assumed a mix engineer did the "how shit is panned and layered" thing... sometimes, yeah, but that's production, and unless a producer is involved, that's down to the musician!
watching this blows my mind being self taught producer for 10 plus years its crazy to see what I learned by hearing and experimenting and this is pretty much how I imagined it looking like
I bought this DVD years ago. Shit is great, i close my eyes alot when i mix anyway. after this theory/style of his, i just focus listen and visual(in my head) where i want sounds. Great great great idea!

I remember seeing ads for this course in pro audio magazines in the early 90s. Finally watching it 30 years later. I had no idea it was this good!
Dave Gibson was my teacher when I took a 9 month audio engineering course at California Recording Institute in 1997. Kind of a trippy dude, yeah, but I did learn the foundations of recording and mixing music with analog and digital equipment.
It made me a much better sound engineer and I still use what I learned to this day. If you really want to learn about audio engineering, there's a wealth of good info in this video, even if it is a little stoney and goofy.
I wonder if he's still rockin' the mullet. lol
Me too man! Course was GREAT!. Really filled in the gaps. Went their after I found out about the Sound Healing program.
is he still alive though?
But we're not talking about reality here
I used to go to that school.
could you recommend reverb unit and delay unit from those times please? and ill look on reverb for them :)
I seriously think this video was made to suit my low attention span...i hooked into this vid
youngatwista the video is almost 3 hours long
mark scarboro
yeah....but with all the psychedelic qualities, and animations, im willing to watch it without getting bored. plus i love learning about my craft
I totally agree with you. This video is pure gold
Holy crap this video is so fun.
I want to learn everything like this.
haahhaahah it's fucking trippy as fuck but great xD
I dont understand how I'm able to understand every single thing in this video, but other youtube tutorials are so confusing and boring. This is very beginner friendly. It really helped me create a good image in my head.
I woke up in the middle of the night and RUclips had auto played this. Was disturbing, comforting and ultra informative.
I had the same experience! LOL
Same
This happened to m3 too!!!
.....
Dude...this video is pure LSD.
***** Eeeyup! ^_^
But well...it actually teaches a lot so...yah know...even if it feels like an acid trip, it still teaches a lot.
charlie st. cloud this is amazing, I can be high and learn at the same time. Peace.
yeah man its beautiful
Whaaaattt
Hence all the Pink Floyd references
Im in audio engineering and this is one of the books that we are studying great book and a cool video
Is there any hidden Knowledge about mixing that I really could use but htey dont show it here?
Do you have a source for Information at Sounddesign?
Cheers :)
He's actually a very good producer.

@@Bm23CC I just ordered Mixing with your Mind based on your recommendation, can't wait for it to arrive, looks like it has everything!
this video is actually life changing. I always felt there was a way to imagine a mix and this video perfectly layed everything out and much, much more.
Same 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I wonder where this guy is now. Hope he's doing great.
He’s a minister, gave him a Google.
Say what?? I thought this guy would be doing just that; now I have to check for myself 😸

This was fuckin great
I often come back to this video to refresh myself. I think it’s a hidden gem. Coming to you in 2024 and probably onward
This is just as relevant as it was 30 years ago. The mapping and visuals are simply brilliant. This is a must-watch for anyone into the current home recording craze.
Why did I wait so long to watch this? It's literally worth every second, a great way to learn about mixing.
I am watching this high af on painkillers and anticonvulsants and it is both an absolute trip due to the early 90s production and writing, and super informative at the same time. Best video I've found in a while.
Horrible combination btw don’t reproduce. Also enjoy your opioid addiction in a month, as I’m sure you are finding out or have found out about already
This is poetry in motion, she turned her tender eyes to me. As deep as any ocean, as sweet an any harmony.
I feel a sense of lost after watching the whole video. I need more of this surrealist teaching in my life. David Lynch would be proud.
i know that its 2016 and im here watching this obviously old ass video, but i can say this.... THIS WAS ONE OF THE MOST INFORMATIVE VIDEOS THAT IVE EVER WATCH when it comes to mixing... i suggest anyone thats a beginning mixer (as myself) watches this... great job Dave!
For sure this really is gold
This the realest dude I’ve ever seen
Bruh it’s impossible to not like this guy
He’s a sound healer now…I love him so much
This completely changed the way I think about sound, effects, and mixing. I can't believe it has under a million views.
1.8 million just 11 months later. WOOF baby !! 🙃🙂

This is such a must watch for all producer out there, years into engineering and things just started to make sense recently, and even make more sense after this video, espcially those weird flashing balls which helped me understand more of instruments placement and leveling. Not to mention this the way the dude talking is zen af and this video is also very entertaining to learn from, this is a fucking hidden gem.
P/s: Best to watch with some weed even better with the 'cid.
Id watch it cid after watching it a first time lmao unless you have god powers and can actually concentrate 😂
Haha just watched in on acid didn't knock what I was in for LOVING every second 😂
This is exactly where I was before watching this video, easily the most important tutorial I might have ever watched
You're so right !
I watched this while smoking crack and eating taco bell
2023 and still most comprehensive tutorial ive seen ..genius!
Reminds us to remember a few things :
1: always be high
2: dont take life seriously
3: humour and being friendly goes a long way. Along with humility.
I love getting high

Only thirteen minutes in and this is already the greatest educational video I've seen.
This is a great teaching, specially with 3D demonstration of sounds! Thank you for sharing!

What a hidden gem this video is! I feel so fortunate to have found it within the youtube universe.
yoooo
Legend says the best music producers got through this whole godly video production lesson 👍✨
This Video was like a Dark-Arts book hard to find when I was trying to understand what mixing even was. The combination of the sensical artwork and the information is still the best Tutorial ive seen, it just makes sense
From 2023 here, This video is still one of the best on RUclips regarding the theme of audio mixing
I love that the video changes frames via his forehead portal.
The saturation from VHS to RUclips is so prominent in the audio for this video ❤️
Now this is truly the most 80's/90's thing i've ever seen in my life
Honestly just now finding this video after being in college for music technology for 2 years now makes me a little sad. This is such a great explanation of the fundamentals of mixing (dynamic, spectral, and temporal processing, panning, etc.) that I just couldn’t figure out when I was first mixing in highschool
where was I all the time looking for music production tutorials when THIS is on youtube
Literally huh? Fascinating. Thanks for the clarification. I thought he figuratively taught you so much.
@@DrummerJacob great contribution to the conversation Jacob. What an original comment.

It's June 2024 and this is STILL ONE OF THE BEST Mixing Courses on RUclips
i'm beginning to learn how to mix right now... so i'm just gonna trust everyone that says so
I've been mixing for years now but I still come back to watch this every now and again because it's just so darn good.
I remember i had this on dvd back in 2003. It was my 1st and best lesson in the understanding of a mix. It really was the foundation of my knowledge today. Shouts to the instructor. Bravo!
“It’s poetry in motion.” 🗣️🔥🔥🔥
It's not outdated if it still applies today
@@TheSozeone you understand what i mean. the concept of sonics are perpetual but the visuals and delivery of the video is very vintage. i liked it never said i didn’t.
Yes, I agree, well said
Modern digital recording faces exactly the same principles in mixdown but with the absence of battling against lack of 'headroom' (space where white noise occured opposed to actual sound when turning stuff up), everything in it is completely relevant and applies to digital multitrack mixing down with DAWS because a DAW is just a digitally analagous copy of its analog hardware predecessors.
I was high the first time I watched this... I think it made such a difference in my mixing.
I love how this video simultaneously feels both like a historical relic and also like a very forward-thinking collection of information
2020-2024 i keep coming back this master class is legendary.
watching this blows my mind
being self taught producer for 10 plus years
its crazy to see what I learned by hearing and experimenting
and this is pretty much how I imagined it looking like
bless the 90s for giving us this!
Can’t believe content like this is free. Easily one of the best mixing guides I’ve ever come across.
I remember seeing this as a book in the library in the mid 2000s. Now ive seen it finally and its still the most relevant info on mixing today!

This is an exhaustive, wonderful, trippy and visually over-the-top experience. I'm so happy it got recommended to me.
I bought this DVD years ago. Shit is great, i close my eyes alot when i mix anyway. after this theory/style of his, i just focus listen and visual(in my head) where i want sounds. Great great great idea!
yeah
wow good fo you
THANK YOU! Thank you for making this. Thankful this is free and accessible. ❤🔥
The amount of effort put in making this video (especially given it was pretty much an analog period) is amazing.
