I saw Sabbath on the Technical Ecstasy tour. Ted Nugent opened up for them, sweaty Teddy was running all over the place, pulling feedback and screaming his head off. Iommi came out and stood in one spot and blew Nugent away.
The same thing happened only in reverse. Saw AC/DC as back up for Ted Nugent. We thought Ted would have a problem following AC/DC but he blew them away. Go figure.

I bought that Iommi CD at a Wal-Mart in the late 90’s. I didn’t know what to expect but I listened to it and heard so many of my favorite singers and loved it. It is a great album
What I find amazing about most of these early metal artists is that they are very thoughtful and well spoken. They have been painted as Satan's little helpers in the press, but they come across as very humane and insightful. They think before they speak.. Quite rare in these days.
Toni has been my favorite guitarist for decades. Geezer was my favorite bassist as well, Black Sabbath has been a big influence on my life. I love those guys.
Been enjoying his music for 46 years. Remember my first Sabbath album in '71 (Paranoid). Played the hell out it and ran out and bought the first album. Tony made a big difference in anyone's life that is listening to this interview whether you realize it or not...God bless Tony
6:50 SMART. All these bands like Journey getting a clone singer.... it just feels creepy. Like your wife dies then you go looking for a "replacement" that looks as much like her as possible. that's creepy. Getting Dio was smart because now it's a new kind of Sabbath and with Dio being a great singer and showman too, it's still good.
Judas Priest got a soundalike with Ripper too (Halford is back obviously), and then there’s Coverdale/Page. I assume Jimmy Page picked his collaborator based on his physical and vocal similarities to a certain mr. Plant.
Agree. Sabbath was a fortunate band that they were able to have many great singers. Ozzy, dio ,ian gillan, glenn Hughes, tony martin. Each one diffrent, each one putting their own signature stamp on the music
Frank Reid yep each individual member of Sabbath contributed to their unique sound. Especially Tony with his riffs and Geezer not only with his signature bass style but he wrote most of the lyrics. Oh and off the subject, seeing you're a fan, Michael Schenker is another very underrated musician. Cameron
We Sold Our Soul For Rock n Roll double album was my first Sabbath purchase back in '80 and I went AWOL from the KISS ARMY to follow Black Sabbath! From Ozzy to RJD then Ian Gillan in my early teens my love for the band never wavered and remains the same today.
This man has done so much for Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Rock music, and guitar playing!!!! Tony Iommi is a huge living legend!!! He is the only one that is on every single Black Sabbath album. He is the one that kept Black Sabbath going through all these years. He was there for all the good times and bad times. I love every single Black Sabbath album that has been released that includes the Ozzy Osbourne era, Ronnie James Dio era, Ian Gillian album, Glenn Hughes album, and the Tony Martin era. There are quite a few Black Sabbath albums that does not get the recognition that they deserve such as Born Again, The Seventh Star, and especially The Eternal Idol, The Headless Cross, and TYR. Those albums in my opinion are just as amazing as the Ronnie James Dio era albums and the Ozzy Osbourne era albums especially Born Again and The Headless Cross. No one sounds like Tony Iommi and never will. He is that unique and special when it comes to guitar playing. He is by far the greatest riffmaster ever!! Most of his riffs are iconic and legendary. All members that have been in Black Sabbath are very important to what the band has done. The original four members are the most important, especially Tony Iommi!!! Most people would never have found a way to play guitar if they had the hand accident that Tony did back in the late 60's. Tony was that determined to keep playing and that accident is the reason why his guitar playing is as legendary as it is.
@R. gmail I love MoR too! In fact I like the whole work of Ozzy's Era, but when Dio takes the lead vocal he took Sabbath to a next level. H&H is not a simple album, its a spiritual voyage. @Fragonborn Entertainment I'm glad you think the same, I agree 100%! @James Young, Dehumanizer is a masterpiece for its time. It's 1992, and the first years of 90's were flooded with great and noisy heavy metal. I remember Anthrax with Only, Sepultura with Territoy, Pantera, and many other bands destroying the heavy metal scenery. Then Sabbath released Dehumanizer, man I still remembering the face of my friends - that were used to grunge rock - when I showed them the Time Machine song. The heaviest album of Black Sabbath indeed. I love this album too!
What a gentleman and genius, I had the pleasure of meeting him 3 times, before and after a Sabbath show on the Headless Cross tour in 89 at Newcastle City Hall and once before a show at Newcastle City Hall on the Dehumaniser tour in 92, I still have his signature and treasure it, I always will
I still remember vividly when Black Sabbath first came out. They were SO heavy and original. I couldn't get enough of them. But like everything else in the pop culture world it loses it's freshness. The first 5 albums are terrific, especially Master of Reality. The Tony Iommi story alone is stuff of legend. Most guys would have given up after an accident like that. Instead he buckled down and invented his own prosthetic finger tips and reinvented his playing style and made musical history. Tony Iommi deserves our admiration for that as well as the music he has given us over the years( decades).
I enjoyed watching this video So much! I have admired Tony and almost worshipped Black Sabbath since I was a young teen. So cool to hear him talk about the past as well as the future!

Tony should do a song with Metal Allegiance. (Suggested other guest musicians: Steve Harris, Glenn Tipton, Don Airey, and see if Bill Ward is willing to give it a go...)
I was a young lad when the first Black Sabbath LP came out and me and my friends LOVED it! It was the heaviest shit we had ever heard. I used to read the music trade papers like NME and Melody Maker and Tony Iommi and Sabbath used to get no respect from the 'scene'. Tony was a much underrated guitarist and yet, as you rightly say, he virtually invented a genre of rock music (there were precedents, but not many). He was a real innovator. And he seems quite a humble bloke in spite of his success. I really like that he's basically a 'feel' guitarist, with no musical 'education' and just goes with what feels right, that inspires me. Hats off Tony! I have all my fingers and I wish I was half as creative a guitarist as you are.
I'd really like to know what Tony Martin thinks about all this. Whatever he does, he'll never be as good as Ozzy or Dio in fan's opinions, even though he's a great singer.
thanks for the upload, although renowned as the metal riff master with in yer face drop down sg fuzz guitars, i always looked forward to the chillout sections where he jazzed it up with the acoustic. shame they never recorded a sabbath unplugged record.
The Professor That's what my guitarist calls Toni. I get it now, the calm way he speaks and play, smooth tender voice when he's talking or evil riffs, he's always very classy. Definitely professor-ish. With that said, raise ya horns. To all of Sabbath and Dip of course, the One who created it. \m/
Make no mistake. When Iommi walks out on that stage, angels are there to listen. The 1st time I saw him it was 52 degrees. When I walked out of the UIC Pavillion, it was snowing! (11/18/83)
Dio was my first concert to. It was 86 Sacred Heart tour in Flint at the Ima sports arena. The wall fell and broke my buddies arm! Was standing in line with ticket in hand some loser snagged it out of my hand. Security snatched me up and threw me out of the building luckily I had t shirt money on me and bought another ticket. Thankfully the show didnt sell out!
Yes he is very relaxed, asks interesting questions, seems genuinely interested in his subject, and does not add too much ego to the mix. He understands that people want to hear Tony, not hoping to be of the same cloth that the subject is made of. By hanging back he is proving he is worthy! great stuff, like Michael Parkinson ('Parky').

I discovered Black Sabbath in 1972 and was hooked. My parents were confident I would grow out of. 40+ years later and ...
A great interview, good questions by the interviewer and audience and of course very interesting input from Tony Iomi.
Thank you!
Great interview, Ryan. nice work. love the insights from this godfather of heavy metal
Thank you!
Interviewer sounds just like the character Tim from the HBO show 'The Life and Times of Tim'. Great interview too.
I haven't seen that. Should I?
Tony is a rock God !
thanks for the upload, although renowned as the metal riff master with in yer face drop down sg fuzz guitars, i always looked forward to the chillout sections where he jazzed it up with the acoustic. shame they never recorded a sabbath unplugged record.
The Professor
That's what my guitarist calls Toni.
Ken Ruger I was at that show too
Tony Iommi played at UIC? Shit, I go there now and never knew that
Concerning Eminem my respect and admiration for the founder of metal and the metal riff has grown significantly.
The original Riff Master!! Absolute Legend
Love the Iomi album...all killer no filler.
Straight up one of my top 10er's
Time is mine crush's too
Total class act Iommi is. Just awesome! Pass on the eminem dude.
He basically invented metal. Look at him. Class
Man toni is the 🐐 i could listen to him read me bed time stories lol
I love this album. I wish it was available for digital download. It would be sad to have it lost to time. I really like the Ian Astbury track.
The reason I play an SG
"People don't know this but Tony Iommi cut his finger tips off cutting a bagel with a sawzall 😁" Satchel from Steel Panther
The song with skin was powerful and the tune with philip h anselmo was beast
We love you tony
Your music is eternal
Wdsta1
Dio was my first concert to. It was 86 Sacred Heart tour in Flint at the Ima sports arena. The wall fell and broke my buddies arm! Was standing in line with ticket in hand some loser snagged it out of my hand. Security snatched me up and threw me out of the building luckily I had
t shirt money on me and bought another ticket. Thankfully the show didnt
sell out!
Looking young and metal
The interviewer is amazing .. Thanks Loudwire, keep music alive \\m//
Thank you!!
They say "never read the comments," but I just read this one and I'm so glad that I did. It made my night. Thank you.
Heaven & Hell has always been my favorite Black Sabbath record, still love it (and The Mob Rules).
Great interview and questions :) Love Iommi = the Riff God
YogaArmy thank you!

Tony iommi is such a great natural down to earth guy !
i might not have heard all of Black Sabbath's albums but love the music
Iommi and Plant? Imagine the magic they could’ve created.
