  • At PVX Guitars we occasionally are asked how to properly drill a hole in a lacquer surface on our Single Cutaway or Double Cutaway Guitar Kits. Without the proper technique it is possible to damage the Lacquer Surface on a Guitar or any other woodworking project that is finished with a Lacquer Finish. Here, Paul shows you an easy and quick way to drill a hole without damaging the surface of your valuable instrument.

Super useful video! I just wish I'd watched it before I drilled the holes for my strat bridge in my blonde lacquer.....good job the cracks are hidden by the bridge!
    Thanks for posting this video.

Just don't use a regular spiral drill bit. Instead, use a brad point, forsner, or spade type bit that cuts at the outer edge of the hole. With any of these, don't try to "step up" the diameter from one bit to another If you try to do this, there is no way to keep the bit centered (unless you have the wood clamped, and are using a drill press.) Good Luck!
