Hey, you know what? The fact that you are owning up to accidently biting off more than you can chew is great character development. I hope to hear a sample of this in your own FatBrett Retrospective years from now.
Very much so. I'm of a mind to finish a rather wild and horrific, but ultimately hopeful, semi-autobiographical novel that's set in an inpatient psychiatric facility. The primary theme revolves around the messy ways we rebuild meaning for ourselves, and find the will to live, after everything we've ever placed any significant value on has been lost. The setting is primarily a framing device for the characters, and serves to explicitly demonstrate power dynamics that are usually experienced implicitly. But, the secondary goal is to shed some not terribly sensationalized light on the institutional horrors that are hidden from, and waiting for, most people in the modern system.
I just want to say thank you for covering Armored Core VI at all, let alone multiple videos. It is my favorite game in Fromsoft's library and now my favorite games series ever, partially thanks to you. All I ask is to keep making things you're passionate about, because I truly believe that I could listen to you go on about anything you really feel the need to say. Skål.
about question number 2, when you said that being surrounded by people who know how to analyze stories helps you learn how to, i felt that, cause i noticed the analytical thinking process of these essays, and i kind of tried to internalize the thinking process here, and now i think that way very regularly. smart people help you become smart.
Hey Brett, just wanted to say you are hands down my favorite creator that I discovered in 2024. The quality of your videos is absolutely a cut above the rest, I hope this continues to be an enjoyable and lucrative job for many many years. Also please let us know if/when your novel comes out. That premise sounded amazing! Also also, have you considered making a patreon or doing sponsored ad reads? The extra cash flow might make it easier to justify "riskier" video topics on less popular franchises you are passionate about
Question: just recently watched a long playthrough of Red Dead Redemption 2, found the story to be amazing. After it ended, I quickly came back to your channel hoping you covered the game but was sadly disappointed. Please tell me you will cover it in the future lol. So many deep characters to analyze. I feel like it's right up your ally. Keep up the great work!
Damn now I want to see that Oppenheimer analysis. Honestly I don't understand why you didn't make that video, it's not like there was a lack of social media engagement after the movie came out.
Dang, your voice feels so casual but no wonder youre so good since this is basically your proffesional area of expertise, that´s really great to enjoy here Wishing the best for the projects coming, as well as the experimental bets
Im so glad I found your channel a whole ago! Game analysis videos are some of my favorite to watch on RUclips and you do them so well! I'm happy you found success doing what you enjoy :)
When your first video came out I found the rejection of death of the author combined with a well studied analysis of a good story was a breath of fresh air. Also count me as looking forward to your Slay the Princess analysis if you decide to do it.
You know, with various critics on RUclips highlighting flaws of various media, it's nice to have someone analyze why various bits of media work as well as they do.
waaaaaaa I would've loved the Still Wakes the Deep video. After watching a playthrough of it I was really really into the story and quietly hoping this channel would cover it. Though it's perfectly understandable why it wasn't covered.
Few questions: 1. What advice would you give to your past self in regards to your YT channel? 2. Is there any advice you could give to someone that doesn't real that many novels such as myself? I maybe read one or two a year and I wish I had the drive to read more 3. Are you ever going to do an analysis of Songbird like you said you would in the Tower Ending video? 4. What are your favorite novels and could you please recommend a few for someone who loves the CB world and characters? Thanks big dog. I am also jealous of your amazing vocabulary and speaking voice. You rock
You mentioned Hollow Knight earlier. Would love to hear a video on it from you at some point, probably whenever we finally get an idea for Silksong's release. Loved the answers to the questions and getting to know you a bit more. Best wishes for your day and for more success to come
Just wanted to say how much I appreciate this channel and I don't think it gets the attention it deserves and seems I'm not alone since some of the other big retrospective youtubers seem to think it's amazing too.
The best things that happened, happened as an accident, for example when I was searching RUclips for character analysis from god of war 2018 not the main character, but the secondary characters, your video popped up in my search and the rest is history.
FatBrett I've loved your videos ever since I found your channel, I'd love to see you do analysis videos on Bioshock & Okami that'd be sick. This video was very informative, I wish you good luck in all your future endeavors.
Slay the princess video, hell yeah!! Also, thank you for all your thoughtful analysis videos, my husband and I adore listening to them together as a shared pastime of video games and literary analysis ❤️
This is probably one of my favorite videos you have made. You could make a character analysis on Thomas the tank engine and I would listen to it. I'm glad that you walked through this door of life. Keep up the awesome work.
I started watching you back when the channel was "I review every wii game ever" and you've been one of my favorite channels since. Happy new year, can't wait to see what you have in store for us.
In response to Q9 I gotta say, I personally don't care which games you cover. If I see a FatBrett video, I watch it. Aside from things I'd avoid in order to avoid spoilers, there really isn't anything I can reasonably assume you might want to talk about that I wouldn't be thrilled to hear your thoughts on. As long as it still feels like you're passionate about the subject, I couldn't care less what the video is about. Also, I would LOVE to see you do a video on Slay the Princess!
"I really underestimated how much people would care about THIS." is probably a pretty accurate historical moment for anyone who has ever actually put themselves ou there creatively. Of all time.
Thanks for answering my question! Great video! Guess ill have to pray to the writer's god and wait for your novel! Also hadn't noticed it was the Nintendo guy, i knew i seen him somewhere, he's hilarious! P.D.: Hey i believe that the still wakes the deep would have been not only awesome but well received. Really hoping you can cover it one day. Saludos desde Argentina 👋
I definitely would love to read some of your work. I know it is unlikely that you would release them, but I share your interest in the genre of the eldritch unknown. Glad I found your channel.
I appreciate the response! I agree that Raven Beak is one of the coolest villains in Metroid, but the Prime games definitely offer far more development for individual characters because of their wealth of logbook scans. I think RB could benefit from more development, but still stands out as an excellent villain. Especially by the standards of 2D Metroid I think he is standout for tying a bow on what was built up for so long like you said.
I'd love to see the horizon essays redone to today's standard please! I love your essay style and I love the way you deconstruct stories and I love the horizon games so this is very much crack to me
As a fellow Russian history enjoyer, I find it very cool that your stories revolve around the early 20th century Russia! My favourite period to study. May I ask what made you interested in the region and the time period? Do you have a connection to Russia or do you just find the period interesting?
I absolutely love a good small town thriller. If/when you ever do finish the book, or even manage to get it published, I hope you'll tell us about it so we can read it.
Subbed to you off the Metal Gear Solid Re:Vengeance President Armstrong video a year and a half ago. Every video you've dropped since has been great, too.
If your haven't checked out Cultist Simulator yet I think it might be right up your ally. It has an incredibly detailed world and mythos and very unique, and difficult, gameplay. Its sister game in the same setting Book of Hours is similar but with much more forgiving game play.
I love your channel. I've seen or at the very least listened to every analysis video you have. As an aspiring writer you have helped me immensely. Just one thing. I am writing a story in which I very deliberately hide the main theme. I hide it behind simpler themes. It is my goal to write an engaging story with relatable characters that the average reader will enjoy, but hopefully only people who have suffered as I have will recognize certain elements that reveal the true meaning behind the story. Am I an asshole?
Found you at the very start of 2023 studied how you break down stories and now im in advanced English. You should make a video of how to break down and write stories.
You described how you enjoy the cosmic horror genre, and playing the part of a detective and piecing together a different parts of the lore to create a narrative. Do you think you’ll ever cover warframe?
So now that you’ve discussed the end of video background from Streets of Rage, what is the little tune that plays over it? (If anyone else knows, thanks!)
Please do bioshock! As you know, the story is incredible with alot of deep nuances in the characters motivations and morals! Tennenbuam for instance done awful things but then grew guilty and changed to redeem herself and Andrew ryan was a deeply flawed character that but did ACTUALLY want the best for his population... You could do multiple episodes just on the first bioshock game!
Would you ever consider joining the Nebula streaming service? Nebula exclusive videos could be a great place to hear your thoughts on indie games, and other media. Those videos could also be of much lower production quality. Nebula also has funded some larger creator projects (movies and plays), so maybe they'd be curious about other outside projects like a cosmic horror book or screenplay?
I think you were right ducking Last of Us Part 2. I am a big supporter of keeping your creative endeavors to subjects you love, and it takes some high level mental gymnastics to arrive at a positve take on the narrative of that game. I don't think it was made with the same level of malice for the audience seen in the Joker sequel, but it's obvious what the writers love about the property and what the audience loved disconnected right out of the gate and the divorce was so bad it left everyone singing Taylor Swift.
Great video, great questions, great answers! I'd love to see some kind of video on the Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise, though it's kind of a commitment length-wise compared to some other games. Mouthwashing would be wonderful too. Anyway, keep up the good work!
I really think you should think about doing analysis on other characters outside of video games. You have great insight and a lot of potential to accurately describe complex characters. A Walter White video or an Eren Jaeger video would slap
Have you ever played Signalis? I personally think it's one of the greatest survival horrors out there with a very interesting narrative style, I think you would enjoy it!
Alright I have a question. have you played the game in stars and time. It is my favourite videogame of all time and i would be very happy to see you cover it, the narrative itself is definitelly worth doing a deconstruction of as well as the main character, a supporting character who is my favourite character of all time, and the villain who is absolutely deserving of a deconstruction of villainy.
Can you please do a video on deconstructing the villainy of Lionel Starkweather. Sure it may not be long but it will be fascinating "The Dark Reflection."
Have you played Hyper Light Drifter? It explores some pretty dark themes while being really beautiful at the same time. All without any dialog. Maybe it could be interesting to analyze.
Dude please do a video on slay the princess that would be so dope with the amount of ideas themes and hidden details you can get from playing the game over and over again is insane. Please maybe just one small one?
Very specific question but have u ever thought about doing a video on handsome jack. I think he’s a pretty interesting villian and in my opinion one of the only times borderlands took its writing kind of seriously.
As for other games to talk about. Since you enjoy doing character essays and like thoughtful narrative. The Red Dead Redemption series would totally fit right into this channel, that's assuming though that's a series you'd be interested in.
In case nobody else has asked: do you plan on returning to covering the other Metroid Prime games? The DoV: Space Pirates video scratched a serious, Metroid Prime shaped content itch that nobody I’ve watched since (except for perhaps The Orpheon) has been able to recreate
You lost the occasion to call the video: "FatBrett - A Deconstruction of Villany" and then reveal your evil plan to rule the world at the end.
Oh, it's definitely coming.
A true villian never reveals there plan till they have already won
Cool pfp dude
I agree 100%, absolutely should have been presented as just another character analysis- a calamitous missed opportunity
Hey, you know what? The fact that you are owning up to accidently biting off more than you can chew is great character development. I hope to hear a sample of this in your own FatBrett Retrospective years from now.
The fact your doing this is amazing. I'm so happy I subscribed to you about a year ago.
Likewise
You have my respect. This was more informative than the vast majority of ‘how to write’ videos or blogs out there
Beginning of this video totally inspired me to start script writing.
Very much so.
I'm of a mind to finish a rather wild and horrific, but ultimately hopeful, semi-autobiographical novel that's set in an inpatient psychiatric facility.

I was not expecting to learn about my favorite RUclips commentator but starting my shift this is the best way to start out!! Glad to hear from you
Thanks man. This quickly became one of my favorite channels. I always know I’m going to be entertained with insightful dialogue.
I just want to say thank you for covering Armored Core VI at all, let alone multiple videos. Your analysis makes me love the games even more, so thank you.
Brett, you're an inspiration when it comes to looking at the meat and sinew of a narrative.
Very grateful that i found your channel man watching your growth when it comes to retrospectives and analysis's is actually amazing
You are the only RUclipsr I’ve watched every video of! I love your content man keep it up

I would like to see a FatBrett - A Desconstruction of Villainy or retrospective someday.
waaaaaaa I would've loved the Still Wakes the Deep video. After watching a playthrough of it I was really really into the story and quietly hoping this channel would cover it. Though it's perfectly understandable why it wasn't covered.
Literally every other channel has covered it, there's enough content of it out there being analyzed from beginning to end.
@SetariM lmao im aware of that. Ive watched like a billion videos on it. Doesn't mean I would want to see brett's analysis any less.
Few questions:
1. What advice would you give to your past self in regards to your YT channel?

We love you Brett, glad you got more than you expected! Also, Blaster Master is a great choice but you've revealed your age. Lol
Well unless that man in the thumbnail and this video is someone else, you see how old he is
I really love your videos. I learn a lot about how to write much more focesed stories and how to make a better use of element around characters.
Any thoughts on a video about handsome jack from borderlands?
This was a lot of fun to listen to. Can’t wait for the other parts.

Are you considering going to the complicated world of kingdom hearts? I feel like many of the antagonists in the series would peak your interest
Just played through Lies of P. It's a soulslike and has a great story. I think there is a lot to talk about there.
I absolutely love a good small town thriller. If/when you ever do finish the book, or even manage to get it published, I hope you'll tell us about it so we can read it.
Fuck yeah we got the blaster master footage!
noooooo no no, Imma need that "Still Wakes The Deep" analysis up outcha Boss. I neeed that for sure
Subbed to you off the Metal Gear Solid Re:Vengeance President Armstrong video a year and a half ago. Every video you've dropped since has been great, too.

I'm definitely down to watching a warhammer video, for example one on Titus or as you mentioned the tyranids.
Besides replaying old wii games, did you ever do any announcer/radio work? You are very well spoken and are really clear when you talk.
Both of your cosmic horror stories sound intriguing. I would definitely like to read them if you still have copies.

I'd love to watch a video you make on Slay The Princess if you decide to do it. Thanks for this video! It's always fun to watch your content.
Have you ever played Signalis? I personally think it's one of the greatest survival horrors out there with a very interesting narrative style, I think you would enjoy it!
I'd love to see Warhammer videos, whether it's 40K or Warhammer Fantasy. Fantasy doesn't get much love D:

Dear Mr. FatBrett,
PLEASE do a Hollow Knight video. I beg you. PLEASE
24:25 slay the princess is such a fascinating thing 😮
Love your videos, could we get a song selection for what you use in each one?
What are the motivations behind the Blaster Master? Why does he blast? What made him a master?
Can you please do a video on deconstructing the villainy of Lionel Starkweather. Sure it may not be long but it will be fascinating
"The Dark Reflection."
One idea I have would be to do an essay on the Dead Space franchise. It has lovecraftian horror elements into it.
LET'S GO, WE GOT THE BLASTER MASTER!!!
Hey man that new book sounds great
Very specific question but have u ever thought about doing a video on handsome jack. I think he’s a pretty interesting villian and in my opinion one of the only times borderlands took its writing kind of seriously.
Hi FatBrett. I just want you to know one thing. whatever game/ character you choose to cover, I'll be here to listen to you
As for other games to talk about. Since you enjoy doing character essays and like thoughtful narrative. The Red Dead Redemption series would totally fit right into this channel, that's assuming though that's a series you'd be interested in.
