The doctor can't always save everyone he has to think about cause and effect, at least sometimes. Peter Capaldi is a big Doctor Who fan in real life. The Doctor does change into a likeness of Peters character, maybe his subconscience can pay a small part in the regeneration.
The scene where The Doctor mentions to Donna about the accidental fire of Rome was a reference to the First Doctor story "The Romans"(1965) I've been to pompeii on a school excursion back in 2007 where this tragedy happened and the ashes victims bodies are still there as a history piece it's a very emotional place to visit. David Tennant has also visited there behind the scenes. Without spoilers theres two actors in this who will eventually become a future Doctor and companion i'll say no more than that. Great powerful episode.
I love this episode - and especially Donna. This episode made it clear that The Doctor doesn't need just any companion... he needs someone like Donna, someone brave enough to stop him when he goes overboard, or demand answers when he's keeping secrets that effects them, or challenge him when he's not holding up his promises and ideals. She's got balls, man. I mean, we saw times that Rose or Martha refused to follow the Doctor's orders when they knew those orders were wrong - but they weren't so great at truly challenging him, but of course not, they're young and impressionable and enamoured with him. Donna's not a young woman barely out of her teens who is easily manipulated or used and she's not enamoured with him the same way Rose and Martha were. Donna has a bad rep in the whovian world - a lot of people are put off. they think she's too loud, opinionated, less passive etc ... but I think that's exactly what was needed. We see the Doctor pick typically more passive companions who he loves and cares for no doubt but who he also hides things from and manipulates. And after so, so much loss, he's got tunnel vision. Thats what happened here in this episode - He had already put the weight of all those lives on his shoulders that he couldn't see past it, couldn't see around the tunnel. The Doctor needs someone willing to go toe to toe with him, someone who is just as stubborn as he is. And that's Donna, baby! And the fact that there's no romantic chemistry there just makes it all the better - because she's his friend and not his lover they can be a little more up front, be a little more argumentative without too many feelings being in the mix. Donna is absolutely one of the best companions, IMO. Who else could get into arguments with The Doctor and consistently win them? Only one other... and you won't meet her for awhile yet. She is my favorite companion and Donna my second favorite, at least in terms of one-on-one compaions. My favorite group of companions is Amy, Rory, and River - you'll see why soon since you're in season 6 now.
You should look for the behind the scenes Confidential episode if you are interested in Pompeii. David Tennant takes a guided tour which is really interesting.
The way I have always understood it is that in the Doctor universe (The Whoniverse) TARDIS does take him where he wants to go, we don't see every adventure. In the old days I used to think it was mechanical errors because as was made clear in the begining, the doctor and his grand daughter Susan stole a TARDIS that was in for repair. We know, however, it does have a mind of it's own so it's not surprising that he's not always in charge.
I cant wait to see you guys perspective of Donner Nobel change over the season (one of the great things Russel T Davies does with his characters ) cool reaction guys
The thing about Doctor Who fandom, unlike any other fandom, is that all fans will have their own opinions and their criticism. You can like that character, you can hate that character. But some fans in this fandom are really... ummm... have a very strong opinion, that they assume that their opinions are the only valid and correct, while other opinions are just trash and they will say "you are not a true fan if you like this kind of nonsense"~ People hate Donna, I don't care, you do you~ People hate Tenth, I don't care either, again you do you. But if they think that they can persuade someone to follow on their own opinions, and hating the things that they are hating, then they are just wrong~ :v
Noah and Donna are so much alike, am I right Josh? First he knew how many citizens there are in the UK but also assumes the Doctor can change people into Hotdogs with this sonic screwdriver and now he notices how The Doctor's tells every new companion "Where do you wanna go?" when it's like "Well obviously you are not deciding" and that's so what Donna would say too. Strangely, it took me so long to like Donna, because she shouts a lot and I'm not fond of that, but now I understand her (character) completely and that's were it all fits. And there was a small side of the fandom who stopped watching Doctor Who when 'that old guy' was brought in. They missed out on the greatest Doctor and the most epic speeches. And he can do speeches. To give you an idea Garett, I have two short clips I advise you to watch what that 'old guy' can do. One of 1 minute, the other only 30-ish seconds. You don't need more, trust me. 'Star Wars Described by a Non Fan' and 'The Thick Of It - Malcolm Tucker's Epic Rant' should do it. Another great, original reaction from you guys.
Donna's run is important because it/she shows WHY the Doctor NEEDS a Companion.
Donna's: "Just. Save. Someone." brings me to tears every damn time.
"And you, daughter of London, there's something on your back!"
Rewatching this show is full of Easter eggs 😃

17:30 Capaldi Doctor = GOAT.
I know that Donna may be a little harsh to like at first but just give her a chance, don’t judge her that hard 😂😂❤

So many good ones in this season.

The Tardis doesn't take him where he wants to go
It takes him where he needed to go
Pompeii erupted in 79AD
Peter Capaldi Played the 12th Doctor in Doctor Who and the W.H.O Doctor in World War Z (he also played a part in Torchwood)

Yeah, no other Fandom (Star Wars) ever does that.
Like that's unusual?
