I prefer the position of the Y540 better but other than that they feel similar. I have never used a macro key in my life so I dont need those keys, but I'm sure many people will find them useful..
@@sdfasdfvccvvc yeah but I'll take his word for it because I don't have the opportunity to go and feel the keyboard for myself and will be ordering online.
I dont think the screen is that much better. I do like having Gsync though . Whether that and the better build and TB3 is worth it is up to the individual I guess. If the battery life was closer I may say yes, but for some reason there was an hour difference. It was even worse until I updated the Intel HD630 drivers
Was in the exact same situation 3 weeks ago. Went with the y740 for better build quality, better cooling, G- sync, RGB lighting and TB3. Checked the y540 in-person at a microcenter and the sure enough y540 rubberized keyboard was a fingerprint magnet and a total deal breaker for me. Even the textured back panel of y540 was irritating to touch (probably a nightmare for cleaning when the dust accumulates in those small groves)
Hey, how's the display quality in gaming? Does HDR makes dark scene hard to visible while gaming? Have you experienced any problem regarding overexposure of bright scenes while gaming?
I do want to do an updated tweak guide. With plundervolt Intel issued a patch making undervolting not possible anymore. Some have reported success other not so.
Could you do a comparison of the new Thinkpad P15 with the 300 nits vs the 500 nits display? The P15 is supposed to be the successor to the P53. How do you feel about this? Should be available now The control center runs the same as previous but now calls "Balanced" as "Gaming" and "Performance" is "Gaming + EluktroBoost" so customers can see the difference. PL1/PL2 unfortunately must remain at the 65/100 for the EluktroBoost to work, atleast for now. Gaming mode no longer runs 645MHz like previously referred. Please download the Intel Smart Sound Technology and run the "SetupInf" located in the Driver folder and be certain to run as admin or follow the installation instructions inside. This should greatly improve your microphone experience. We've seen great improvements for both the internal and external mic. I'm boxing the Y740 up now - it should have been sent back 2 weeks ago to be honest. I might do a video summarizing the good and bad about various laptops I have covered this year
It seems that a number of manufacturers have latency issues in the more expensive versions of their laptops e.g. The Y740 vs Y540 and the Dell XPS 15 vs XPS 13. Why are they having this issue and why can't/aren't they fixing it?
I can only think it must be driver related, or how much bloatware there is installed and these big OEMs often have lots of bloat that can interfere with stuff..
Hi, I was looking for a gaming laptop under 1500$ and I found this currently on sale at 1470$ (talking about the Y740). Do you think this is the best candidate for this price range given its specifications? Should I wait until Friday or is everything settled down? Will really appreciate your help!
Well I guess whichever cheaper in Australia when Christmas arrives, hopefully Lenovo will give some price drop. I'm also considering the Metabox Alpha X cause it's currently cheaper there for the same specs (the one Jarred reviewed, a custom chassis laptop kinda like Eluktronics but available in Australia)
@@OWNORDISOWN the Metabox Alpha X? He just did a review a few days ago comparing the gtx 1660ti vs rtx 2060 on it ruclips.net/video/X59_-ol8H88/видео.html
Great comparision! I bought Y540 with i5 9300h and GTX 1650. I have this issue that I can't fix. Sound goes ahead video when watching RUclips, Netflix, other streaming video, in every browser, and even when watching trailers in Dolby Access app. There are some sound popping and crackling. I'm using Hybrid mode (to have longer battery life), and this mainly happens on battery power. I have tried everything to fix this, registriy edits for power settings of Realtek HD audio driver, changing audio settings (turning off audio enchantments, exclusive mode, turning off Windows fast start up...), but nothing helps. Video and audio just get out of sync after couple of minutes of watching. There are many threds on Lenovo forum for this (even for Y530 model), but no official respond from Lenovo. I'm hopping there will be some software update for Realtek drivers or BIOS, because it looks like a software issue. Did you encounter those issues while reviewing? Thanks!
Thanks, glad you liked it ! I never experienced that, but this is what I would do - I have found that by downloading Traktor (its a music mixing program) and running latencymon whilst you have music playing, click on the driver tab it shows you what drivers are causing high latency. Anything over 1ms is too much. Usually its the nvidia driver causing it. I would see what driver is causing your latency. Perhaps even update the nvidia driver and the Intel HD630 driver.
@@OWNORDISOWN It seems there are some issues with HDAudBus.sys . I, and many other owners of Y540 (and Y530 and some other models) have these issues (as shown from number of threads on Lenovo forums). I have tried everything to fix this. Check out other store ;) But if you are not too serious about gaming, pick the latter (it'll allow you to play more demanding games, and 60 Hz are enough for most people... With the 1650 you won't even reach 60 fps soon so why bother with a 144Hz display?)

First off, great review! You’ve been helping a ton when it comes to making computer decisions. I’m having a hard time deciding between the Y740 and the Mag-15. Would you happen to have any advice to help make the decision?
Thanks! Its interesting, in my first look video of the MAG 15 I got criticized from someone comparing it to the Y740 yet many people have asked this very question. Although I am huge fan of Gsync I really the MAG 15. Its keyboard is much better, its placement is normal versus the Y740's that is moved right. The mechanical keys are very nice to use. Its lighter, smaller, performs better, its screen copes with glare better and it has longer battery life. For me the SD card reader is good too. The webcam is placed in a normal position and is quite clear, although the inbuilt mic sucks so you will have to use an external mic. The speakers on the MAG are definitely inferior and by a large margin. I do have a Soundblaster update to do so that might help but I would be suprised if they matched the Y740. There are going to be some great updates to the MAG, one of which will make it fairly unique so expect some improvements.

Y740 is almost perfect laptop but they fucked up the keyboard and webcam. I don't know why they had to do that. Also other minor things are shoving that plastic piece in good looking aluminium body and not having 2nd M.2 nvme slot.
I think that must be because they got rid of the max fans. It definitely was pulling more watts than the MAG but just couldn't hold as high a boost clock
@@sdfasdfvccvvc my MAG 15 never hit 90w...whilst the Y740 did. Eg. With the MAG set 87 degree limit, shadow Tomb raider MAG peaked 83w , versus 91w on the Y740. Hi Stephan,
Another fantastic video !
I think you forgot to mention which keyboard is actually better...as in... terms of key travel, feel.
The macro keys are the biggest draw back of the y 740 for me.....will probably get the mag15 because of that.
Telling people which keyboard feels better is like telling which pizza topping tastes better. Everyone has different preference.
I prefer the position of the Y540 better but other than that they feel similar.
I have never used a macro key in my life so I dont need those keys, but I'm sure many people will find them useful..
@@sdfasdfvccvvc yeah but I'll take his word for it because I don't have the opportunity to go and feel the keyboard for myself and will be ordering online.
i have no problem with the macro keys youll get used to them pretty quickly
What is the keyboard like?? Which one is better to type on
for me the price difference between the 2 is 350$, is it really worth the y740 for the price increase?
@@mynameisnotamd2923 thanks for the feedback, I'll just go and see it side by side. Best way to compare
Hey, how's the display quality in gaming? Does HDR makes dark scene hard to visible while gaming? Have you experienced any problem regarding overexposure of bright scenes while gaming?
Hello...can you make a detailed video on undervolting Legion Y740? It will be very helpful.
Any concerns about the Thinkpad P15 being a "Gen 1" product. Have there been any early new model release engineering issues with Thinkpads??
I do want Lenovo to send me some ThinkPads. I haven't actually tested any and its long overdue. They are sending me the Yoga Slim 9i I believe which I will do when I get back and I'm getting requests on the Legion 5 17". The P15 looks like a great product, great specs and good sized battery too. I'll see what I can get from them.
@@OWNORDISOWN Something that I found odd was that certain models of the P53 came with a 3 year warranty, but now all P15's only come with 1 year of warranty.

The backlit keys for the numbers on the y740 look evenly lit on your video. Can you confirm that? On my y740 the LEDs are placed directly behind the characters on the number keys which means the numbers are not well lit and are difficult to read
I've just boxed it up but I dont recall seeing any issue..
The forums say the new one has thermal issues.
As you saw mine did too, hence clocked the CPU at 3700 Mhz and undervolted. OK then.

Hi , I showed them in the video: 3700 Mhz on the CPU with a -155mv UV and GPU OC by 147 Mhz
Does the 500nit refresh on the y740 apply on the 17” model?
I don't think it does at this time. I think that is still 300 nits
Why show HDR when the HDR function is not enabled at upload ? :)
500 nits or 400nits without hdr wont make effect a lots :) and less than 400 nits not support hdr only sdr
when will the mag-15 get the update
Should be available now
The control center runs the same as previous but now calls "Balanced" as "Gaming" and "Performance" is "Gaming + EluktroBoost" so customers can see the difference.
Download the Sound Blaster Audio and there are installation instructions within. When you switch it on adjust some settings, there really are significant improvements.
The BIOS Update is now live for consumers. I made sure to make a notification that it does not remove the 75c restriction.

@@OWNORDISOWN Who knows? I know a few people have had XPS laptops and they don't seem to be able to do anything that significantly improve things.
Good work especially on the HDR part 👍
Thanks mate !
Hi, I was looking for a gaming laptop under 1500$ and I found this currently on sale at 1470$ (talking about the Y740). Do you think this is the best candidate for this price range given its specifications? Should I wait until Friday or is everything settled down? Will really appreciate your help!
Ammar Amgad now 1299$!
Well I guess whichever cheaper in Australia when Christmas arrives, hopefully Lenovo will give some price drop.

The Y740 is my only choice than any other Lenovo's laptop
Is the keyboard layout layout better (different) on the Y740 17" than the one on the 15.6"?
Yes, the 17" doesn't have the row of keys on the left and has a number pad. I prefer that layout for sure.

Now, I'm just gonna wait and hope that there will be some driver or BIOS updates. It's just strange that none of the reviewers mention this problem. Thanks for the reply.
@@zlatanibrisimovic3799 I came across the same issue in the Y740 and mentioned it in my latest video....

@@zlatanibrisimovic3799 thanks, I try and cover as much info as I can. Although I didnt test audio latency with respect to video I used my default test using two audio mixing tracks and using Latencymon to detect why driver was causing the highest latency. Check out other store ;)
But if you are not too serious about gaming, pick the latter (it'll allow you to play more demanding games, and 60 Hz are enough for most people... With the 1650 you won't even reach 60 fps soon so why bother with a 144Hz display?)
I wouldn't go with any of those - I don't like keyboard layout on Y740 and display does not seem very good on MAG-15 (I have seen complaints about backlight bleeding) and both have down-firing speakers which is bad if you place laptop on some soft surface.
So whats the other choice in that price bracket

OWNorDisown Thanks for such a great and quick response! You’ve convinced me!

Y740 is almost perfect laptop but they fucked up the keyboard and webcam. I don't know why they had to do that. Also other minor things are shoving that plastic piece in good looking aluminium body and not having 2nd M.2 nvme slot.
Cool
damn the fps of the y740 is looking pretty bad compared to the mag15 because the y740 is a lot larger
I think that must be because they got rid of the max fans. It definitely was pulling more watts than the MAG but just couldn't hold as high a boost clock
MAG-15 has a boost mode which raises the GPU power above 90w, it is enabled by default. Lenovo Y740 does not have it.
@@sdfasdfvccvvc my MAG 15 never hit 90w...whilst the Y740 did. Eg. With the MAG set 87 degree limit, shadow Tomb raider MAG peaked 83w , versus 91w on the Y740. In BF V MAG again peaked at 83w versus 88w on the Y740.
I'm hoping one of the updates I have will push the MAG to the 90w level...
Does your MAG push past the 90w mark?
@@OWNORDISOWN I do not have MAG-15 but I've read that apps like hwinfo do not show the real power usage of GPU boosted by Eluktroboost. I believe BOB also told me this in his reply to my comment to his review of MAG-15.
