Mitchell should have had the sense to pull the plug on the deal a couple of weeks ago though and moved onto other targets. I feel the buck has to stop with Mitchell as transfers are his responsibly. The needs of the club/team should take preference over the desires of the manager and it's Mitchell's job to ensure that happens.
It's not worth bringing in a mediocre centre back to fill in for a few months (another Chris Wood situation?), and Guehi seems to be the only centre back who could have been available that would have been a perfect long-term successor to Schar. Better to wait for the right players to become available than to panic-buy. Same goes for an Almiron successor and a Wilson successor.

But this is an absolute embarrassment by our club, Newcastle. We've wasted all window chasing just one player when we need afew players at least in numerous positions, and now it could all be for nothing.
