Yeah i loved Jimmy Jewel in 'Nearest and Dearest' a truly great sitcom, it wasn't racist at all, but it never gets mentioned or replayed on the television. I also loved a program he made for Channel 4 called 'Arthur's Hallowed Ground' he played a groundskeeper in it, but i can't find it anywhere!
This was a TV version of the radio series Sound Familiar hosted by Barry Took. BTW - Chesney retired from showbiz in 1946 due to ill health & went on to outlive all his co-stars...
He grew it to hide scars from crash landing a fighter, in WW2. Won a DFC. He lived most of his life terrified of being exposed as gay. He married, but told his wife. I have a great deal more discomfort with him being High Tory and a fan of hunting.
I think they’re cutting out music and film clips that are copyright to other companies and would have to be cleared and paid for. It’s a shame as I’d liked to have seen the whole show, but it’s all down to money, I’m afraid. Better this than nothing, though, which is realistically the only alternative.

@@georgielancaster1356 never knew about the scars. How sad. But he made it his trademark. Also in keeping with tally ho image I suppose. I read he was closeted as many were back then. Very cruel.
Actually that's incorrect. Chesney Allen was Christian, Bud Flanagan was Jewish. Also i don't think Edwards and Jewel were either. Dennis Nordon was. Just goes to show you shouldn't believe everything people post online 😂
Fabulous. Before I was born but I find it absolutely delightful.❤ Thank goodness for RUclips!
Wonderful nostalgia
The great Florrie Forde , the queen of the music halls , older people still hum her songs , a great performer !
Jimmy Jewell was ahead of his time in his acting ability, so young for his age and outlook on life, long may he live on as a comic genius.

I loved him in Funny Man, which was autobiographical partly so I believe about his theatrical beginnings in variety.
That’s a fierce looking ‘tache!!

Why do these have to be so heavily edited ?

@@kamandi1362 That and dead air, it would take too long to upload. I'm grateful we have these short clips.
I agree, you can't hear the full comments. Maybe its a copy write thing.
5:57 So that's where John Cleese got the idea for 'Fawlty Towers'. Good old Monsewer Eddie Gray, what a legend!
ALL THEY NEED ISJIMMY DURANTE
Please show the whole episode or where can we get these complete ones
Jimmy Edwards moustache must have been high maintenance.

He played a headmaster that enjoyed caning schoolboys bums.. not a role for a gay man.
.... and Olive Oil!
Little known fact. Chesney Allen is Clint Eastwoods biological father.
Not really, but make false statements is not ideal.
that Jimmy Jewel looks a
right piece of work
You would never tell that all 4 of these guys were Jewish.

Does it matter in 2024.
Jimmy Jewel trotted out the hearing aid story every time he was interviewed or on any panel show. So tedious a story.
I always found these old "variety" comedy types a bit creepy.
Why, are you ten years old?
