- This is the entire television broadcast of The Last Night Of The Crazy Gang, from May 20th, 1962.
This has been transferred from a personal VHS copy, which has its limitations! There are moments where sound or picture aren't great, but I'm not aware of many other copies, so I've uploaded it anyway. I hope you enjoy it!
Featuring Jimmy Nervo and Teddy Knox, Charlie Naughton and Jimmy Gold, Bud Flanagan and Chesney Allen, and 'Monsewer' Eddie Gray.
The programme features a rare conducting appearance from Jack Hylton, who produced the Crazy Gang shows for fifteen years. He also appears on stage at the end of the show, giving a speech to the gang.

Monsewer Eddy Gray - a comic genius: they all were, and much missed. I was 12 years old when the Gang retired - there's been nothing like them.
From Terence Wise in UK..........Watching this in 2024 Oh God whatever happened to good old UK???.
Me too
It went to.. Islam.. Mayor Sadiq Khan
I can never thank you enough for uploading this priceless gem. God bless the Crazy Gang for the joy and laughter they gave to Britain when we needed them most.
That was an incredible experience - I just watched it from start to finish and I was transported right there. Amazing to see Noel Coward in the audience, applauding vigorously (second row on the aisle) along with Ingrid Bergman, Lord Goodman and other luminaries of the day. The Bud Flanagan section that opens Act 2 (38:20) is the highlight: the comedy patter sharp and perfectly-timed and the songs sung with aching tenderness and nostalgia, especially the ones with Chesney Allen. The audience's prolonged applause and his humble acceptance are very moving to witness, all these decades later. I was four months old when this was recorded, by the way. Many thanks for uploading this treasure.
Surely this warrants digitalisation to restore it for ever. They influenced so many performers.
I recall the TV broadcast, with great concentration, I had just turned 7 years of age, the broadcast way past my usual bedtime, Father over-ruled Mother, he insisted I see the broadcast, to witness the final performance of a British institution and the winding down of the elderly era of traditional Music Hall
Bravo, This show has everything lacking nowdays in TV entertainment. Sadly this TV era ended 60 years ago but i do miss it (as of course my late father would have) and i hope these great artists names live on and the Crazy Gang is remembered but "every dog has its day" and once they pass from living memory its tough to maintain any generational presence . For your information did anyone notice a very drunk Bob Boothby appear at 37mns:54 while the famous Ingrid Bergman was doing "piece to camera"?
As for F&A this is a lost moment which you can cherish. I adore these 2 gents and spent many years collecting all recordings i could lay my hands on pre digital era ... mostly LP's from 70's collections & tape cassettes from the 80's retro period and some original 78's which i couldn't play anyway! These 2 men were loved & cherished by a nation & generation and they bridged ( in my opinion) a British era from post 1st WW1 through the depression & 30's and on into 1939-45 and beyond until time caught up with them ( as it does to us all) in early 1960's. Their beautiful harmonies are ( i was informed by piece written on them) due to Ches being a musical bar /2 seconds behind Bud in all lyrics. Whatever it was it was pure magic & brings a smile to my face and tear to my eye every time i hear these marvellous songs.
PS: Jack Hilton...incredible band leader
Transmitted on Associated Television (ATV), a British Commercial TV Channel, on Sunday, 20th May 1962 and billed as “The Last Night of the Crazy Gang”. The show was adapted version of The Crazy Gang’s Young at Heart that had been running at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre for 2-and-a-half years and more than 800 performances. The show’s last official performance took place on the Saturday evening of 19th May 1962. The Crazy Gang returning to the Victoria Palace Theatre the following evening to do one last performance for the benefit of British television audiences.
Note # the slave girl stooge in the Roman sketch was a then 28-year old Anne Hart who for near 50 years was married, until his death in 2016, to Ronnie Corbett. They married in 1966 and she gave up the business to be a full-time wife and mother.
Wonderful to see ‘Monsewer’ Eddie Gray doing his performing dog sketch. It’s a brave comedian who will share the stage with animals.
I was 6 when this first aired. Didn't see it though; too late at night for a young child whose bedtime was 7pm! Thanks for uploading it. Absolutely hilarious even after all these years.
I saw Chesney Allen in Underneath The Arches in the early 1980s with Roy Hudd and Christopher Timothy. Ches closed the first half with Roy, and the audience reaction was one of those very special moments i shall always remember.Ches retired from stage performances after WW2 due to ill health, becoming Bud's manager, but out lived by many years all the rest of the Crazy Gang. My Aunt knew Ches when he with his wife lived in Sussex on the coast in retirement.Ches did a few special 'one off' performancespost WW2. One was with Bud to close the 1948 Royal Variety Performance with Danny Kaye. The final Crazy Gang Show was another.I am very grateful to Pete Faint for posting this show - which apart from one clip hasnt been seen since 1962. Aparently Peter Glaze gave Roy Hudd a video copy of the show.I am surprised Peter Glaze wasnt in the show to take the place of Jimmy Gold. The female lead in the show is married to Ronnie Corbett! My parents saw this show at the Victoria Palace before televised by ATV as the last show of the Crazy Gang.Cheers,Julian
My father was a huge fan of the crazy gang. I was 8 years old when this show went out and dad recorded the audio off the tele onto his reel to reel tape recorder. That sound track had been with me ever since, surviving conversion from the reel to reel to a cassette (via the cassettes mic being held next to the tape recorder speaker) and only last year being converted to mp3 to live on my I pod. The audio quality had deteriorated badly, but it always took me back over half a century and reminded me of dad when I played it. I never dreamed I would ever see the video again. I must confess to a little tear when I found this on RUclips. I am so grateful to you for posting this and giving me another link to my childhood. Thank you so much.
My Dad too. He used to sing the songs around the house. He could do both Bud's and Cheney's (unique style) parts. I knew the songs long before I ever saw the originals. Happy days not fully appreciated by a teenager growing up in the 60s. Those songs are still with me today. That's how great they are. I now have a double CD but I am having trouble getting anything that includes Strollin', one of my favourites.. So glad for modern media that this video is available well into the future.
At 50 mins in at the end of 'the Umbrella man' you can see Dame Vera Lynn in a box applauding.
I tried to get tickets to see this but so fully booked so I missed out So this is wonder full to watch Thank you so much you have made this old lady Happy
This still makes me happy and sad at the same time. So many ‘grandma’ memories. I saw the crazy gang as a 6 year old. My lovely love was a patient at the Marsden Sutton on The Bud Flanagan Unit. His Son had leukaemia and the whole ward has taken his name as he funded the unit. It was/is a wonderful unit, a legacy to the Flanagan Family.
Grew up in S/Africa and listened to so much British comedy that my grandparents listened to and taped theses guys included I am now in my 60’s and still laugh myself silly listening to and watching all these old acts that knew how to get a laughter without cursing or swearing. The ask for posting
I remember being fascinated by their antics, when I saw the broadcast, aged ten. Well done, and thank you, Pete Faint.
This was pure nostalgia for me. I was in this show as one of the showgirls. I too would like to know how to get a DVD of this. Chesney Allen did not take part in the last 2 Crazy gang shows because of ill health. The show lasted nearly 2 years & was, just as Bud said we were a big family; They were very happy times. Anyone see the show?
I would love to do you DVD of this let me know ,x
Many thanks for posting this, they maybe old and this was first broadcast many moons ago, but they put many modern comedians to shame. You have made my year .
Just shows you what real talent is.
I've not seen any of this before. I have been born 30 years too late. Bud Flanagan is as good as any comedian today.
Better.
Thank you for posting this on the internet. This is a classic I have wanted to see for a very long time. I can just recall watching part of it on television - I was a mere 5 years old at the time.
*1:22:33** seconds of pure laughter and enjoyment*
I remember The Crazy Gang and listening to them on the wireless (radio). Having watched this fun and frolics has tears in my eyes from laughter, my neighbours must think Im 🤪.
We will *NEVER* see such genuine comedy again, *never*
One of my favourite films is Gas Bags.
Best wishes to all..
Wonderful, Fantastic, Beautiful. British comedy at it's very finest. Thanks Pete, this was an absolute treat
Ive just bought 5 of their films on DVD. Love 'em. We had Leslie Crowther visit our school -he was touring a tribute act with Christopher Timothy of Flanagan and Allen.
Thank you. I was aware of the Crazy Gang but I have never seen any of their performances before this one. Now I recognise where so many sketches and gags I used to know of in the 60s came from.
That was great thanks I was only ten when that was shown on the tv it brought a lump to my throat watching it wonderful stuff and a few tears in my eyes .thanks
Crazy Gang stuff was deleted from the tapes after their shows went out on air - so this is a God send - well done!!!
Absolutely fantastic! Thank you for putting this show up - so wonderful to hear Donald Campbell getting a well deserved mention! xx
Strangely enough Chesney Allen who quit showbiz in 1946 due to ill health went on to to outlive all the others .
It all seems so terribly dated now and probably did in 1962, nevertheless The Crazy Gang, and particularly Flanagan and Allen, were very good at what they did during the depression of the 30s and the war years. The warmth and affection can be heard in the 1962 audience. The reaction between Bud and Ches is touching. By today's standards they seem really quite old when you consider Jack Hylton was around 70, Bud and Ches in their late 60s. Ches was the only one that made really old bones. A great find on RUclips and thank you for posting.
I saw them here in 1958.. Bud threw me a sweet
Everyone knew the.. Crazy Gang in those days
I have watched this very many times. What strikes me is the applause Jimmy Gold gets for his brief appearance towards the end. Chesney Allen gets quite a bit of applause, but nothing like that for Jimmy Gold
Makes tears come to my eyes
Historic gem for generations to experience, lovely upload .
Look up frozen limits movie
I AM SO VERY VERY GRATEFUL TO YOU FOR POSTING THIS. l remember these great comedians and the crazy gang from my childhood. don't suppose you could copy this onto dvd for me ?
Wow, this is a real nugget, well done mate, and thank you so much for putting it up on here.
Pure talent...Eddie Gray was a genius.
Just watched an interview with Rick Mayall where he cited the crazy gang as an influence and that led me here!
What was Chesney Allen doing in the audience and not in the actual production? He should've been in the entire thing. Good to see he was still alive to be a part of it anyway. Thanks for sharing this anyway. I'm a big fan.
I think Chesney retired earlier on health grounds and then went on to out live them all.
Yes, he'd retired by then through I'll health ......yet outlived nearly all of the others!!!
Brilliant Flanagan and Allen
Pure class.thanks pete!♥️♥️👌
Legendary, never see the likes again
Like jma1009 I also saw Chesney Allen in Underneath The Arches, I also have an autographed sheet of music signed by the entire cast Including Chesney's, one of my pride and Joys. This has been willed to The Grand Order Of Water Rats alongside my vast Theatrical collection!
I too saw this show. It was a very sad night & performance as it was the day that Peter Glaze died. He was the 'stand in' for the gang ; ,A lovely man & very talented He's on the film.
Sorry Joy, but Peter Glaze isn't in the last show as on here. Someone else took Jimmy Gold's place till the final act when he had a very brief appearance and on the curtain call. Peter Glaze understudied for all the Crazy Gang but he isnt is in this film of the last performance. I did however see peter Glaze at the Chichester Festival Theatre performance of 'Underneath The Arches'.Apparently Peter Glaze gave Roy Hudd a recording of the performance on here. I remember Roy mentioning it. It was apparently the only known recording till Pete Faint unearthed the ABC recording recently.Cheers,Julian
I loved The Crazy Gang sad when they finished
My dad love the crazy gang

I shared a dressing room with your Mum Sylvia. She married Les Want who was one of the singers ina group called the Kentones;I went to the wedding; we all did!! How is she? Would love to get in touch I now live in France.
WOW That would be super! Yes I'm on Facebook; by ther name of Joy Alcock. When I first had the computer it was my name & I've not bothered to change it. I'll try & find you on FB I'm not an expert!!! Thanks for replying Ciao
There are lots of John Wants!! on FB Can you give me a little more detail as to which one is you please?
+Joy Lorcery I'm the one dressed up from the 80s with a pink heart behind me :)
Remembering Toni Palmer
Bud got his "second" name from an absolute bas'*+d of an NCO he served with during WW1. He said he'd never forget him. REVENGE!!
Little Chippy doesnt hald look like the Blue Peter dogs from the 70s. Petra and the other one.
1962--remarkably bad video transfer from video tape
Does anybody know what the name is of the showtune that appeared at various points during the performance and was the final tune at the end when the curtain came down ?
The song is Young in Heart which was the title of the show.
+Joy Lorcery Many thanks Joy. I will be searching the Web to see if there's any sheet music. Best regards Keith
Hope you find it: if you cant I can write it out for you I am a musician!!Let me know if you find anything; I would be interested in seeing a copy.
@@joylorcery1024 I noticed a few bars of 'You Don't Like It, Not Much' a couple of times too.
God how awful they were!
They were brilliant, and are still hilarious more than 60 years later.
