I like the line "it's the men who chose to work with young girls." John Dillinger or some old bank robber was asked why he robbed banks. "That's where the money is."
It's women as well. I can give you a list of women, teachers, who've been found guilty of sexual misconduct with students. I even know one. Female predators aren't as well known but they exist and there are more of them that you could imagine. Child predators gravitate to where the children are, including women. Those predators don't all wear trench coats. Some of them wear dresses and have even had children. Trust is important. Blind trust is naive.
@@ghost9-9ghost No one is making that claim but you. Almost every professional media that exists has great aesthetics. That's what makes it look professional. Look at any professional interview, movie, tv show, etc. Great aesthetics goes with the message. Doesn't make the message deep nor does it make it shallow. What is it with people like yourself that make such shallow comments? Is it just pure cynicism?
finding out how many pedo's were involved in entertainment media that I probably enjoyed many years ago is fucking up my brain. it's pretty shocking that there aren't more preventative measures in place to help the kids. having a great set of parents seems to be best way to mitigate the risk of kids being victimized.
It is shocking, but we shouldn't be surprised. As another commenter has said, and to reuse the words of John Dillinger, predators go where the children are. This means you'll find them in the schools, and in the scouts and things like that, in Hollywood working on children's programming, any profession that works with young people and young children You're going to have predators that try for those careers to be around their prey.
Brett is lucky. Too many mothers seem to want to live vicariously through their children, with tragic results for the children... (edit: spelling correction)
Even as a straight white male, I’ve had tons of negative experiences of the sort described here, and from both men and women in power positions (writers, directors, producers). I rejected them all, and my nascient acting career sputtered to a stand still. I have zero regrets.
Parental love, guidance shapes the quality of our world. When you raise children properly those qualities are passed down from generation to generation. It proliferates, it’s infectious…
In the 1970s Johnny Carson made a lot of jokes on The Tonight Show, about the Hollywood Casting Couch. Decades later I stumbled on a photo online, of Oprah Winfrey having lunch with her pal Harvey Weinstein. She knew. Then the final puzzle piece, of why the cover-up? I was watching Mel Brooks being interviewed by Jimminy Glick...aka Martin Short. I could sniff the stench of this from the mid-West, 50 years ago. They knew.
From Hollywood to Broadway, the entire industry is a minefield that no one passes through without taking damage. I have many relatives in this industry and all of them have stories that involve abuse of this sort. You don't know who you can trust, and the ones you think you can trust find themselves at the behest of those whom you can't trust; you are going to find yourself compromised no matter what, even under the best of circumstances. Part of the problem is that there are so many actors vying for so few jobs, so many writers and directors competing for so few green light opportunities. The desperate will endure any kind of abuse to grasp at that slim chance.
The reason Hollywood will never be cleaned up is because there are too many young women like Brett's "friend" who are willing to do whatever it takes to become famous. If they're gonna throw it at you, what man will resist?
That's why governments have labour standards. There's no really good reason why child acting should be legal in the first place. Even if there's no abuse it could still be too hard on most kids. Too bad there's no research on outcomes (that I've seen).
@@periechontology 1) Even at 14, the friend was doing this deliberately. 2) The friend's mom wasn't 14, and she set it up. So at worst you can say that the mom was throwing (her daughter) at him.
Any adult make or female who works with kids who has no sexual reasons for doing so, the last thing they want to do is be around those kids outside of their work. My wife is a primary school teacher & has been for over 25 yrs. She is loved by the kids she teaches. The amount of them that range from adults to teenagers who want to praise her & thank her for her patience in learning these mostly disadvantaged kids to learn to read & write is unbelievable. Honestly the live she gets from her ex pupils is off the scale. She has been asked by her employers to go for promotions hundreds of times. But she's happy doing what she does. But by christ if she can avoid these kids who she really likes & has a helluva lot of time for outside of work is laughable. She'll stay away from places she knows they are. If any are near our house, she panics saying I don't want them knowing we live here. Adults don't want to be constantly around kids who aren't their own. Usually in 99% of cases if they do, it because of their perversions.
TV show would have been Gortimer Gibbon’s Life On Normal Street which she was on in 2016. Only real kids show I could find. Decent number of staff writers but the main creator and one of the writers is a former preschool teacher. So yeah.
My parents tried desperately to make me a child star when I was very young. They took me to auditions for M&Ms commercials, I was on Bozo the Clown, they tried to get me into Nickelodeon, but I had crippling stage fright and knew what the red dot on the cameras meant, and I froze every time. I think that saved me from a life in Hell-ywood. My dad, however, was furious. He practically disowned me after several failed attempts to get rich off me. He was physically there throughout my childhood, but he might as well not have been.
As a former theater kid and dancer myself, a child or teen loves acting and making movies - that is totally fine, like a hobby. But they should never feel pressured to do it or put in any compromising situations. Hollywood and parents need to get better at protecting children.
This is what we all love about you, Brett. You're authentic, you know where to draw the lines, and you got the courage to enforce those boundaries! As a father of two daughters, I salute you!
I'm glad that Brett's mom had the foresight to prepare her daughter as best she could... It's absolutely insane that there are parents out there who would willingly put their kid as well as other kids in harm's way, just to appease their kids wants and/or their own wants for getting roles/jobs/access...
During interviews with other RUclipsrs, she talked about her childhood and the struggles she went through. Nevertheless, she had it better compared to what most child actors went through.

People have no idea how important it is for the safety of a child against s-offenders, to have great parents, truly capable at raising their children. I had a similar experience (not in acting 😄), but at a Turkish marriage party (the son of friends of my mother married). (Here in Germany.) I was (I think) around 12 years, when in the toilette (it was a rented gym/sports hall) an obviously half-drunk old man pulled walked past me, pulled me from the urinal and showed me in a cabin and closed the door behind us. From my point of view there was simply an adult that wanted me to do something that made absolutely no sense. As such it never became an emotional scar or anything. I only remembered this for the 4th time or so in my life. I'm certain I would've forgotten it completely if my mother didn't ask me to recount it in absolute detail and me feeling that something was wrong, by the way she looked, like something very serious just happened. It isn't bound to any negative feeling at all on my part, probably because I wasn't scared, but seriously confused at that time. And the toilette was full of people. In fact, there were a few men standing next to me at the urinal, but they didn't do anything. (I'm black, so there is no way that they thought I was his grandson.) And the only reason why I was able to simply walk out, was that my mother always taught me to speak my mind.
