Yep, we need sockets on high end laptops , not soldered ones... especially with CPU + PCH in one chip !!!! w t f ! ! ! ! they are doing it intentionally.
i mean if customers are knowledgeable enough to know those are available assuming they like those clevo thicc shells one of the most popular brands is an enthusiast based one that uses desktop cpus but most of the time they arent cheap or as popular. acer helios, predator and nitro lineups are the budget adjustable friendlies. a lot of times we have to do research and think through on gaming/creator laptops. but it is a growing trend with most trying to save space on the motherboards. my fav rog laptop series solder the ram and leave one slot for buyers to expand or none at all. i do miss being able to replace cpus. reballing is the most painful process if you lack experience, patience, tools and stencils. makes spare parts accessible to fix more consumer friendly imo.
Someone was selling chips but they don't desolder them, ie, no heat no bend, they cut the motherboard with 4 slices, ie, you get chip plus a section of the MB and you remove the chip.
In general most of these get the cpu shorted because of either problems on usbc or well... the screen. And in this case im wondering if not unplugging the already faulty screen eventually just killed the chipset. The liquid metal application is horrible, Acer warranty centers were also notoriously not cleaning the liquid properly and just having the metal go everywhere. At least from next generation they switched mainboard vendors for most Nitro / Predator motherboards, and they didn't use a thermal putty like seal for the metal that broke immediately even for you... This laptop doesn't have HDMI output from the cpu at all actually, all gpu, some of them have a mux to switch between them but thats rare on Acer gaming laptops.
I repaired a different Acer model with a similar behavior for a friend of mine. It didn't have a straightforward short like this one, but after a few seconds it powered off (backlight would appear for an instant). Basically VCCGT was not showing up. I solved it by completely removing the VCCGT power supply. It is a bit slow at POST (maybe a timeout occurs and then switches to the NVIDIA gpu) but it works. Would be interesting to look at a video about intel CPU voltages sequence (VCCGT should be one of the latest to show up if I'm not mistaken) 😊
Hey it's only your skills and experience that have made it possible for you to continue in your line of work. Many with less experience left the trade long ago due to this high level of function integration. All the real easy fixes disappeared with the Pentium 3 processor years ago. Keep finding the pizzas!! 🍕🍕🍕🙂😉
As the battery was disconnected, then someone was here before. Looking at the state of the fans, I wonder whether the liquid metal paste was due for change and either wasn't changed or not changed properly. Wishful thinking, but I would have expected some sort of overheating warning / shutdown, rather than frying the chipset.
That loos like the integrated gpu u could try disable it by cutting the power to the integrated only i belive it should have a differet power soure for it ?
Sorin, your compation should be aplauded, you tried your best for the customer, you will never know why the chipset died, you cannot perform miracles, it does look really weak on the thermal paste application and really weak on the area where the thermal camera can detect heat (short), the thermal paste does look non exsistant, maybe thats on the heatsink! it a shame.
Q: SORIN, how do we flash a new BIOS if we cannot see anything on the screen and the laptop keeps going off. What are the best solutions to this issue? Please advise, thanx
Well, no surprise. Customer said he didn't want the display fixed. I think the GPU had the clock ticking. Something similar happened to me. A customer brought his laptop and he told me that was no power and the last thing he did was sending it to someone to fix the screen, it was working at that time. After inspection I noticed that the fuse was busted and the display cable destroyed... What happened was that some kind of display switch IC went shorted, shorting the +5VS. When checking the IC I noticed that it had a pin called PCH_EDP_EN or something. Aaaand the chipset was gone. The chipset was heating just having the charger connected ☠. Sad. Yeah, don't underestimate damage in your screen or screen cable. Or you could regret later... But seriously why they had to design it like that! I remember looking at the laptop, I guess the display cable was destroyed due to corrosion in the hinges. One of the hinges went so hard that one side was half opened all the time. It was a Lenovo S???-15IIL with GPU.

Gaming laptop is just a term used for very high end laptops they are not really designed to play games on them they are designed to do heavy tasks like games but not only games😂
Agree with this 100%. Bought one for my brother and just waiting for the main power rail to short and take out the GPU/CPU. Brother thinks all is fine and I'm very negative lol. I service the laptop regularly and keep dust under control and hoping that will be enough. Acer Nitro is what I bought him, cheap and cheerful lol.
Gaming laptops are easy to move arround, it's still a good idea, the problem is with the greedy designe , we are living in a time where big companies don't care about customers, they want more money, so they build shiits like CPU+PCH to increase the chance of a dead laptop , so people will buy more ... ( not laptop again maybe desktop but in the end a new CPU GPU RAM , company win ) ...

Socket means bigger space and the trend atm is to make it super thin, that's why i don't like thin laptops

I fully agree. We have had sockets in the past.

A last effort testing after unplugging the screen maby? There's a slim chance a screen short due to its damage loading the chipset...
Check hdmi encoder ic, ive had a short one cause 3.3v short and chipset got hot. Asus rog that was fa507 etc.

Is it true, plug-in and unplug in the HDMI cable when the machine is on, can make damage, because it’s not like a USB port?

because of excessive liquid metal surely... It spread to components.
