Your country starts to modernize extremely quickly, you and your people get benefits and rights a lot even in the west don't have, and then you get into the worst war humanity had ever seen; you win somehow, your country becomes a world power and you get to see your country be the first ever to reach outer space. Man, the USSR is so slept on because of propaganda, but it's seriously one of the greatests ever.
It was still a totalitarian craphole. My great grandparents were put in gulags there and had to do forced labor just because of their ethnic background. They also lost their land and were forbidden to practice christianity, something they could freely do under the Tsar. The USSR has done far more evil than it ever has done good.
