How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we quickly realized a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. For the last two years we've lived in a Geodesic Dome, which has allowed us to be comfortable (expect for the winter months), while we realize our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

What a week!! I can't believe how much happened in just a few short days...and to think there's so much more to come 😂. I'm sure it came across in the video but taking matters into our own hands (finally), feels like we're breathing new life into this project. More importantly, who wants to volunteer to keep Ty and Dumpy distracted while I get to work on the waterslide?? LOL😆
the water slide sounds like an amazing idea. think how much fun your future kids would have with it? also todd ….so no real downsides here right ?
@@josephlorenzini188 this is what I'm saying!!! LOL
I am thinking that water slide is a safety feature just in case of fire.. you would need to test it periodically… just saying…
Water slide would be so dangerouse as the water is not deep anaugh, safety first 🥰
If it were really humid I'd say stop and relax. But seems to be a pretty good day. I'd be proud of myself too if I got ALL THAT done..looks fantastic. Job well done
Also, Dumpy is a National Treasure 🇨🇦!
He’s the brother, uncle, cousin we all wish we had. He’s def not “just your contractor” he’s family now 🫶🏼
Wish I could love this 100 times ❤
We love your comment! Blessings 🌱
Dumpy needed to be with you guys from the beginning so that you didn't have to go through all the mistakes.
Thanks, Dumpy & Mel
You two fellas are saints. 😇😇 I like option #1 for the siding
Love you guys
Glad to see you have a great helper in Dump, defiantly a family member now❤️❤️❤️
24:50 “Say it…say it again” I love this man, he’s just the best! Thank you Dumpy for helping Todd & Tyler finally bring their dreams to fruition. Your expertise, professionalism, kindness, humor, and emotional support obviously mean the world to them, and to all of us who love them so much! 🧡
that was classic! lolol love Dumpy!
Since we all know Dumpy reads the comments
Dumpy you are freaking awesome
Just a tip from an interior designer who had this conversation with numerous architects . . . In your bathrooms . . . be sure to place some blocking for your towel bars and toilet paper holders. You will be very thankful you did when somebody slips and falls in the bathroom, grabs for the towel bar, and it is firmly anchored to the wall, instead of only drywall.
You might also want to consider doing the same blocking for your stair railings as well. They do tend to loosen over time-especially if you plan to have children.
I always line my walls with marine ply before installing drywall so that no matter where I need to put in a towel rail or grab bar, I don't need to think of where the blocking is, instead I can go for where it looks good and is functional.
Best line ever: Tyler - “ you guys struggling?”
Todd- “Nope, just havin’ fun, making memories”.
I ❤ that attitude. I daily try to channel my inner Todd positivity. Love you guys❤️❤️
Senior here, in Toronto. Been watching your show since way before your dome home, but never wrote a comment. Started this one not knowing what I would say, but I'm moved enough to simply tell you that you guys are the real deal, by ANY metric you could site. You have allowed us the privilege of being a part of your lives, with all that you share, the good, the bad, as you work through issues and overcome obstacles. You're not too proud to ask for help or get assistance from others you know you can rely on, be they Mel, Dumpy or family or the broader community.
I guess what I'm saying is that your show is a microcosm of life, creating and building community with every episode. Thanks so much for bringing us along.
From NE India here..... cheers 🎉🎉🎉
Well said friend ❤
Totally agree! Another fan from TO 😊🇨🇦
Don't ever pick a fight with Mel or Dumpy. They are absolute gems, and as someone else wrote, they are now family.
I love Todd’s attitude! “You guys struggling? Nope! Just making memories!”
There are so many great one liners on this channel 😂
One generation learning from the older generation- working together as a community. Beautiful to see
What a difference it makes when you get over the bs the original contractors put you through. Dumpy has been that special gift we never expect, but comes just in time to save the day! The house is spectacular looking.
Definitely option 1! The darker color’s gonna complement the windows more I think.
And if it fades in the sun over time it won't look to white. Love your Show.
Never thought of it that way!! Might be the better call
@@veralittle5456wow! Great thought 💭…hmm
You guys are amazing!
Option 1!
The darker gray makes a subtle contrast with the black, and makes a pleasant contrast with the dark green of the trees.
Option 1. It gives you different variations of color. It looks more natural and you wouldn't ever get tired of it.
Option 1 for us too. The lighter grey looks more artificial. Only our opinion
Agree
Agreed. Option 2 looks fake.
This comment..
Team option 1 as well for my boyfriend and myself!
Old widow here-just want to say to you both, but especially to Tyler who mentioned struggling on this episode-life is just plain hard, but you have both had so many triumphs while you work to build your lives. Think of those things when you struggle. Maintain the boundaries you’ve set. Put on the attitude of gratitude and fake it until the gratitude really shows up. And by all means use Better Help whenever you need to. This old widow adores your content and is grateful for it.❤
I appreciate the realness of your channel. So many are start-to-finish projects done in 30 min. Which is great if you have a full crew. But for the average homeowner that’s not reality. Thanks for keeping it real.
Has anyone, besides me, wish this channel had its own TV show? I could watch Tyler and Todd all the time. I love the love and chemistry you have with each other as well as your community. I'm so happy you were able to connect with people you can trust and depend on who are willing to teach you and learn from you. What a blessing. Loved seeing the parents' cameo as well lol
I wouldn't wish that on anyone! Between audience and management etc, life for them would be miserable and not their own, as it is now. Real.
It would be less content with commercials.
Totally agree with “what’s another two years”! 😂😂😂 It’ll get done when it’s done and that’s okay because each day is your lives together too. There has to be a balance and time for each other. Hugs, hugs, hugs and a lotta love to you guys (fur babies included)! 😁🤗🥰
BIG shout out to Mel and Dumpy! They truly ARE the BEST. We Love you!
and mum and Timmy
Thanks for showing up for us 15 weeks straight! Y’all make this world a better place. Proud of you both finding a balance
I hate to burst Todd's bubble, but your pool is waaay too shallow for a waterslide that high up. Also, Mel and Dumpy in the same video?! Heart explodes with happiness!
Put a trampoline outside of the window. Bounce into the pool.
😮
And Timmy too! Only thing missing is a cameo by the Vanwives.
Talking with my therapist and going through my mental health journey has been such a positive and uplifting experience. It sincerely helps and there is nothing wrong with it. Go for it.
The darker option is my favorite for the siding.
You guys won the lottery bringing Dumpy into your lives, I also love his quiet comments, Todd and Tyler are my absolute favorite! 💗 btw: option 1 for the siding.
Todd being a hummingbird is so perfect.
"Or 30 something year old with ADHD" 😂
LOL, Loved that comment too!
I think that the videos showing incremental changes, rather than dramatic transaformations, helps your content feel a little bit more relatable. Yes, 'move that bus' kind of content is fun, but it's not how things happen in real life.
In your real life you are working hard for your vision, and being honest about it makes your content that much more intetesting.
You guys are the embodiment of the famous Canadian mantra "Let's get at it". Way to go! And hats off to Dumpy, Mel & Todd's dad. Legends, all.
Hello from Maine. Very rarely do I comment, I work very early in the morning so I am asleep when you post. When I come home from work Monday morning my husband knows it is Tyler and Todd time (don't bother me). Anyway, this VLOG was fantastic, you both and your crew. I have watched you two since buying the land up until now. Besides your families which are there to help and would never lead you wrong. You two have two extraordinary men in your lives. God Bless Dumpy and Mel, out of all the persons, contractors, engineers etc... you have worked with these guys have worked side by side with you and never led you wrong. Someone below wrote the word family and yes they are family. Good luck and I look forward to the next one. Side note Tyler, from a gay man (older than you) married 20 years to his incredible husband. No matter what happens, no matter how overwhelmed we may feel. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel, I believe it is because you two just like us two, we are not on this journey alone. Our loving husbands are there.
option 1, the darker one.
The help you guys have physically, mentally, emotionally from all the different people in your lives is so wonderful. Im reminded of the saying ' it takes a village'. So much love. I'm weepy with you, seeing the progress. ❤❤❤.
Option One!! The darker color looks so much better with the trees in the background.
I love Dumpy, he reminds me of my dad, happy, patient, caring, so smart and always there for you❤miss my dad😊
The pool is going to be awesome.
Shout out to both Dumpy and Mel and Timmy- all who are the salt of the earth. Also, you guys rock for never giving up on your dreams. You always find away to keep going.
Option #1 (darker gray) - sufficient contrast without be jarring. I think if you went with the lighter concrete color it would act as a beacon that would draw your eyes to the tower, stealing the focus away from the house as a whole. So proud of you guys for staying optimistic and regaining control of this important project. You are blessed with some amazing friends and family. Keep up the great work. Make sure you treat Mel (Mal?) and Dumpy like the kings they are. Those two are amazing friends to have.
You two are the fresh air on the intetnet. I have such respect for you both.
My vote, the darker overlay for the tower!!!
Option 1; it has a more natural look and will tie in with the surrounding trees and land nicely. I went back a couple of times for a closer look and still came up with #1.
You guys have been on an huge financial and logistical roller coaster when you have such a strong vision, are so diligent in research/due diligence and then find out that vendors are either not ethical or not competent (or both). So, I hope you can give yourself grace bc your willingness to PERSIST in the midst of that is "character building" but it's also evidence of your inner strength...even if it's exhausting now.
Option 1 - against the tree leaves and trunks, a darker color will blend in and look better than the stark concrete color which will make it stand out rather than blend in. Go dark! 😇
To help with the decision, you can also build a collage of the colors of your forest and the colors of the 2 options, and put them together so you can see how well they play together. 👍
Todd's comment nope having fun just making memories was the best ❤❤❤
I love spending time with you guys. I talk to my family about your latest news. My day uncle turned 100 in February. We held a big birthday celebration. At a smaller family luncheon we blew bubbles because he said he had never played with them. Also had the bubble wands. It was a blast.
Option 1 for sure. The dark gray blends in more with the black. The lighter gray is too bland.
PS.. the water slide should definitely be on the bucket list.👍
PS to the PS…you two are always such super hard workers and should always be proud of your accomplishments.
When you get the right team together life gets so much better...
Thank goodness for Dumpy the Great! 👍🏼♥️🇨🇦
Having good, sincere, hardworking, and dedicated help is SO important. Everybody needs a team of people they can count on and trust. ❤
SLIDE!!!!
I vote for a slide!!!
What could go wrong? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Famous last words 😂
@@tylerandtodd
And someone COULD have edited that out.
So… toss a coin. It’ll give legitimacy to the subconscious desire for the slide already (you COULD have edited it out).
Also
I came to find the comment about the slide so I wouldn’t be the first (or redundant).
DO THE SLIDE… you’ll have so much fun!
* removable so the bears don’t get ideas and end up in your bedroom.
Do the. S L I D E💦👩🏻🦳🧖🏼👈deceased husband loved to play 😂
@@luv2dancesalsa465 You might want to think about how you would handle wet people running through your bedroom. lol
Me to would look so cool lol
Great to see things back on track. Glad you’re feeling empowered to get the project finished
Looking forward to the final result
Definitely vote for option one on the faux stone siding. Also, so happy you guys are feeling better about all the progress at your container home. Dumpy is EXACTLY what you guys needed to help you regain momentum and ensure stuff gets done properly. Wish you nothing but the best as you continue forward.
This grandma is proud of you guys. Not related to you but it feels like you are. You’re both so hardworking and amazing men.
I know exactly how it feels to have experts you trust. Bless Mel and Dumpy.
My opinion on the tower siding is to match it to the bark on the surrounding trees, it will make it cohesive and feel like it’s more of a natural part of the landscape, nestled in the natural surroundings.
I agree with other comments - option 1 had much greater depth of color. Perfect choice!
You guys are on the right track do not give your energy to anyone that doesn't deserve it energy is precious and be very selective who you loan that to
You guys just seem so much happier these days. Of course, who wouldn’t with a crew like Mel and Dumpy!? Plus kudos to Todd’s parents, ready to lend a much needed hand. Great video!
I just wanted to say thank you to you guys. I told my nephew about better help . He has been using it for a year and it has been life changing. You will never understand how much you guys showing your vulnerability has help so many.
I am so glad you guys found Dumpy! And Mel is back!! You gotta be surrounded by people you trust. The lighter color on the tower would contrast the darker container colors. That would look sharp.
Just catching up. When you were talking about all the help you have around you (Dumpy, Mel, family), I thought back to when you started the reno on the first RV. If you had looked ahead down the road to see the things you’re doing now, I’m sure you wouldn’t believe it. The homes you have built/renovated, the equipment you own, the friends you have made - you guys are awesome! You deserve to be incredibly proud of yourselves! I guess COVID was supposed to land you back in NS! 🤗🤗
love Dumpy and Mel. Both are such great additions to your home build.
That was a GREAT way to say it cause you 2 have made BUCKETS of lemonade changing plans, fixing other people’s mistakes, and finally realizing your dreams with sooooo many details of your home‼️👍😊I continue to be amazed with your skills and your determination‼️ You are such an AWESOME TEAM‼️‼️‼️
I like option one, the darker siding looks better.
This video is a perfect example of the reason we all look forward to seeing you guys. Your honest portrayal of the joys and struggles, frustrations and successes is why we can relate so well to what you're going through on this journey. Although the particulars for all of us may be different, the generalities are all the same. It's about taking what life gives us, working through it and making the best possible outcome we can manage. No one owes us our happiness but we owe it to ourselves to make our lives as happy and productive was we possibly can each day. I used to tell a friend that if wishes were horses, I'd have a stable of unicorns but I'd take one dependable mule any day! LOL You guys are doing great! Hugs, Jules ❤
Thank goodness Dumpy came along when he did. A great teacher too. Love you two. xxx
Ohh my eyes are watering 😩 while Tyler talks the mental health part… the fact Ive experienced the worst half year of my life with struggling with the anxiety and panic attacks and many more surrounding problems coming out of absolutely stable health.. hits me 😮💨 Ive just heard from lots of people around me that this first half of the year was extremely exhausting for them too whether it was their physical health or mental or health of family members 😌 fingers crossed for each of us 🤞🏻🫶🏻
Option 1 looks more like stone. And a BIG FAT YES to a slide from the bedroom window to the pool is an absolute must!
Hello Mel and Dumpy we love you both!
This video was 30 minutes, but it felt quicker than that. Keep up the good work guys. Also, we have a Canadian waterslide manufacturer called white water.
Option 1 looks to compliment the rustic nature vibe that y'all are going for.
Give Dumpy lots of praise he as worked so hard bless him, you guys are brilliant when you are doing a project ❤
I think option one looks wonderful and I’m glad you have people working with you. You can trust.
Proud of you for sharing your therapy journey! I shared my 4 year therapy LOUD AND PROUD!!
It's hard to fathom all the crap you two have been through with this build - one lousy contractor after another. Don't know how you managed to stay so upbeat (most of the time). Glad to see things moving forward again. I'd go with the darker colour for siding on the tower.
You guys are such hard workers!! And your excitement is fun to see! Suggestion: Get that pool done as soon as possible so you can fill it up, then when you are working in the heat, you can cool off as your day progresses and stay cool and refreshed!! Makes a hot work day more bearable!
Option one-it looks like Welsh slate, beautiful.
Option 1!!! 2 doesn’t look as natural. So nice to see you guys happy and moving forward with your home!!!
I think option one the darker siding would look best on the tower.
I don't know how y'all don't have a million subscribers! Y'all are my favorite channel to watch! Thanks for sharing your life with us and keeping it real. ❤
Option 1, your siding is light in color, option 2 is also light colored. Option 1 is a nice contrast. Great job guys.
Two years behind schedule!
Welcome to life! I live my life one day at a time and that’s as good as it gets! Some how I get it all done! And yes to the water slide 🤗🥰💕
You said you guys aren't afraid of hard work...what an understatement. You both have an incredible work ethic, and everything looks fantastic!
Thank you so much for watching! See you next week ❤️
I just looooove y’all’s interactions and your interactions with your contractors. You always make them laugh and cut up. Just love the humor!
That graphic of the waterslide was priceless! 😂 Admire you guys so much.
I know right! I laughed out loud and it was at that exact point I was sold on the water slide idea! Looks like nothing could possibly go wrong with that plan! 😂
I am adhd and my husband has had to deal with me for 53 years. We went through some financial problems and had to start anew and also made a major move before I was diagnosed. My meds really helped ,but I can tell you I have a wonderful husband that been so supportive. I do not know of your issues but I know you will make it as you are both committed.
It's clearly Todd's "fault" that Dumpy "forgot" the caulk guns. 🤣I'm sure the inspector concerned about nonexistent defenestration would totally approve the bedroom waterslide. Who doesn't need a year-round pool-size hot tub to drink wine in? Either shade of grey stone for the tower is probably fine. I'd pick the more saturated darker grey, but that's just me. It is nearly always a good idea to bet on yourself.
You are amazing! All of you! And you continue to meet us at your regularly scheduled time. That is a huge commitment in which your viewers are extremely grateful. In addition, your filming and editing, as well as your music selection, are so professionally executed. This all makes you one of the best RUclipsrs to watch. We all love you, and we are here for you. And thank you, Tyler, for correcting Better Help (not health). I was one of those that confused the two.❣
"Nope! Just having fun and making memories." is a line I will use when appropropriate. It brings me so much joy seeing Tyler and Todd being so confident with their abilities to get this work done with friends and family. Two handsome young men and their mature assistants making work enjoyable is worth sharing. I am certain these videos are inspiring many others to step out of their comfort zone and attempt the seemingly impossible and achieving extraordinary results
Hope you are doing OK Tyler. So vulnerable having to share on RUclips and keep showing up. You are both amazing and thank you for sharing your lives, processes and creativity with us.
The pool doesn’t make sense to me. You protect an object that the other side will have standing water in it, which has no protection. Much love, always. Thanks for sharing every Sunday, it makes my day.
I suspect the inside of the pool will have some sort of protection on it.
you've been my fav queens since your RV tour of the Americas (pre pandemic)! Muah! Luv ya both!!
So much respect for you both..everybody needs a Dumpy in their life too ,have a lovely week and stay safe x
You have the best crew family with you now, Mel and Dumpy 😊
Siding option #1!
The dark gray is so beautiful with the forrest.
One big thumbs up here for the water slide idea! Go, Todd, go! 😀
Concrete finish rakes or the 3ft wide leveling rakes move rock easily and in larger amounts! So proud of you guys for persevering with so much honesty, dedication and determination to make your lives what you want them to be!!❤
Yes!!! Waterslide is ABSOLUTELY needed!! ❤❤❤
Option 1.
Dumpy & Mel are classic old-school workers. They are dependable, they know their craft, and they are loyal to you their clients. Love them! You boys are blessed to have found them.
You both are amazing role models of hard work and determination not only to the gay youth of today but to all ages and all people.
Love you guys! If I lived near you I would be over getting my hands dirty helping you all!

OMG guys, do I admire your spirit! Make lemonade indeed. You remain an inspiration for all your fans!!
The pool looks great. It is all coming together. Love your humor. The house and land are transferring for the positive. Thank you for sharing your journey. It is fun to watch.
You have made so much progress. Good to see you smiling again. There is pep in your walk again. So happy for you. You are kicking a$$ again
Week after week we are treated to an amazing story that is filled with knowledge, love and a lot of hard work. The editing makes the journey so interesting. Watching is priceless medicine for the soul. The occasional little jabs that are thrown is heartwarming. Love has no better teacher than the two of you. Ironically I have mentioned your channel and to several friends who happen to be subscribers and share my fondness for your stories. Surrounded by family and of course your work family you have the perfect journey in life that at times goes off the beaten path. You are living life with such enthusiasm and hope. Your world you share with us encourages viewers that the power of love and a lot of hard work is what life is about. Your three four legged children are so heart warming... you two deserve everything that you have worked so hard for..... hugs T & T.
I love content that's just daily life and ongoing projects! I don't need a traditional start-mid-end story on youtube. I've been LOVING your regular content lately and am stoked that you're giving yourself grace and taking time for that life balance. 💜
So happy you both are working on work/life. It goes by quick! And it feels right for you both to be taking on these projects. Especially with Mel and Dumpy on your side. Thanks for taking us along. Have a great week!!!
ONG! Where Did You Come From Kelvin!?! ....damn! 😊
Really glad Dumpy and Mel are helping. And almost to 250K. That is a lot of interest and love.
