  • Oshi No Ko was the most anticipated Anime to premiere in the Spring 2023 lineup. I've heard many things about the manga, so of course I had to watch the first three episodes. Even after watching the first episode, I felt the need to talk about this dark series in this episode of "First Episode Impressions"!

Idol culture is an extremely toxic thing in and of itself. Their job is to sell the lie of "I love you" and "I am yours". They're not just your everyday entertainers. Extreme fans may want this really pretty lie and we abhor them for it but they are also the most hardcore of fans, going to every concert and buying every merch. If you want to make it far as an idol, you have to make good use of them. Idol culture sorta preys on the vulnerable fans with very pretty lies, that's why it's a double-edged sword. So in a way, Idol culture is the worst and best parts of the entertainment industry

For a while, I'm aware of Japan's toxic entertainment industry practices with idols. But I've read VAs like Mamoru Miyano and Showtaro Morikubo had a kid and didn't suffer consequences for it. I guess depending on where you are in the industry, you can have a family and still entertain. Here in the USA (depending on what kind of fan you are), we are not bothered when our favorite actor, singer, or superstar wants to have a life along with their job. We usually go "Awesome on them. Hope they'll be happy." That's my take.

If you want an example of toxic fandoms in both US and Japan, Rooster Teeth's RWBY has a dark fanbase, with such things as harrassment, death threats against the creators, ship wars (mainly for Bumblebee and Whiterose,) among other things.
And in Japan, another anime that shows the toxic entertainment industry is Aggretsuko. Yes, Sanrio made the scene where Retsuko almost got killed by an obsessive fan, only to be saved by Haida. I'm glad he did it, but I do understand that Sanrio must portray this issue among other issues in Japan in a mature way.

I tend to be a casual fan. When I would met my favorite voice actors as a kid, I always tried to be polite and thank them for making something I enjoyed. They would offer to shake hands and I would ask if that was okay, then they'd smile and talk with me instead of shuffling me aside for the next in line. I always wondered if I was being too shy and they were trying to drag me out of my shell. And why they always seemed surprised when I would let them talk about whatever they wanted instead of the show they were there for. With hindsight I now know that they were glad to talk to a fan who saw them as a person.

Oshi no ko is amazing at dissecting the underbelly of the entertainment world. Not only idols being “pure”, but getting ‘too old’ for the industry, using connections over talent, feeling pressured into sleeping with directors for acting parts, young entertainers getting taken advantage of- Oshi no ko isn’t afraid to touch dark subject matter, that’s what makes it revolutionary to me.

    • @Peasham
      @Peasham Год назад +1

None of that is revolutionary in the slightest is the, most of these things are tropes that pop up in random anime and most of the darkness is HEAVILY toned down. Ai even having kids in the first place, let alone having time to ever see them, let ALONE take care of them is a fantasy for actual idols who are lucky if they don't get an abortion on the spot. And if they're a top earner like Ai? Nah that fetus is getting the deletus on sight lmao
Furthermore, the anime actually promotes people being idols since they're framed as amazing inspirations that lift people up with their performance despite all the negatives, everyone wants to be an icon, an inspiration, that is how you get people to be idols.
None of which is a criticism of the actual anime mind you, I just do not think that's what it was going for at all.

To answer your question, Robyn. I am a cautious fan who also made peace with the reality that I have no control over the people I admire. I have created my own fantasy world where I can have whatever I want since I understood the importance of not going crazy over something not going my way and that has taught me a lot of important lessons. I love and admire Chuggaaconroy, but I don't want to lose myself to any sick fantasies of...well...try not to think too hard about that.
I have also had a taste of that dark reality through a demented admirer who only liked me for the stories that she enjoyed reading from me only to lose her mind to my putting off writing said stories with her ranting about me being a "narc" and a "socio" all for a bunch of stories!! So, yeah, I am very well aware of how twisted the fandoms are. To which I would like to bring up a saying from No Straight Roads' own Tatiana "I don't give a damn about you, understand? I. Owe. You. From what he did to how he lives surrounded by pristine posters on the walls and trash on the floor they are saying “If this is how you live, it’s unhealthy.” I have thought that Going all out super fan and knowing every bit of trivia was at times kinda cool, but there are a few lines not to cross. One being if the pursuit of more content or contact with the celebrity is making you waste way too much time or money, and another is thinking just because they know about a celebrity that they REALLY KNOW them and are a part of that celebrity’s life. I am quite aware of the toxication in idol industries in Japan, I read through some problems and the mentions of idols facing problems.
Seriously, young people should not go towards idol career, if they learn what’s happening they wouldn’t try to take a go. And idols should just quite while they’re ahead and moved on with their lives, and telling about their true feelings.
Honestly, fans shouldn’t be thinking that way, it’s no wonder we don’t see any romances to some idol characters or in idol anime. And they just stopped following their favourite actors over the fact they have a boyfriend or kid, they are really not right in the head. Well, at least there some decent people in Japan if they are showing the dark side through their stories.
In fact, two VAs are married together and they had a child last November, I didn’t find any issues somewhere, seems like some fans are alright with their idols being together.
You don’t need to tell me about some spoilers; I’ve look into the manga… and dear god did was that twisted.

As much as I love the Idols that Japan produces, it just sucks the shit that they go through to maintain their image for a bunch of entitled fans.
I complain about how actors and famous people here in the U.S get up to weird shit, and roll my eyes at all the attention people give them like the Kardashians over who their next boyfriend is or whatever, but at least they have SOME say over what they do and have the freedom to make mistakes or whatever. Idols and actors in Japan aren't allowed that same freedom because if they step out of line for one moment, its like the end for their existence and I hate it. I just wish more people would just chill out and have a brain and remember that these are REAL PEOPLE, and they are allowed to have their own lives outside of their idol-ness.
As for the kind of fan I am personally... I'd say I am between a Casual/Deep fan. I mean I LOVE Star Wars (Not so much the Sequel Trilogy) and I keep up to date on what goes on in Star Wars, though I don't go to every star wars event. When things happen that I like, I am happy - but when things happen that I don't like, I get sad or angry - and I do get angry at specific individuals - but its never aimed at the Actors or Actresses. There is a difference between hating what a character does, and what their actor/actress does and I believe people need to keep that in mind before they complain about anything - and remember that sometimes its the writers/directors who make the calls and the actors/actreses have to do what they are told weather they like it or not. Look no further than what became of Luke Skywalker.

That doesn’t stop me from losing my mind when I meet people I love and admire but I won’t bother them if they are busy. Their people too, they have life’s, you aren’t entitled to their attention just as they aren’t entitled to your love. It’s nice to be noticed but it isn’t a requirement if their busy with their own lives.

They can have a normal life and do normal things, like going to a grocery store without being attacked by fans. They even live in normal without the need for security. My stepbrother’s uncle is part of a famous metal band in my country, and I saw him once at my stepbrother’s birthday. I know that the series tackles the dark reality of idol entertainment industry and majority of the entertainment industry
But I like that it also tackles the horror and mental issues of Internet culture + online communities and how it effects on actors/ actresses mentality. Plus, how internet culture has become more toxic with reactionaries youtubers and people posting their opinion without understanding their own actions effect others (cancel culture, Twitter, etc.)

The mention of the industry forming the image performers have to follow reminds me of a story I heard about June Lockhart when she was on Lassie. She had given an interview before she started on the show where she admitted to doing things like enjoying alcohol and such in her free time, and the execs in charge of Lassie got up in arms. June had to agree to not wear revealing clothing, drink, smoke or swear in public for the entire time she was on the show.
So yeah, obsessive idiots who say they are fans are a problem, but corporate mandates like that are the match that light the fuse.

The drawn character you see as my icon was the source of drama from an entitled fan I once had. This character is not only canonically gay, but she also has a strong hatred for MEN. This one GUY (we'll call him Kevin) had a huuge crush on her. He kept going on and on about how he had her in his WAIFU HAREM despite that fact that she HATES men. He kept crushing on her to the point in which even I was starting to get creeped out by him. So I canonically gave her (ahem) "Both Babymaking parts" for males and females JUST TO SPITE HIM. Most of my fans LOVED it and she became more popular, but for KEVIN, never have I witnessed the amount of SEETHEING hatred this guy had for me for "Ruining his WAIFU". He made defamatory videos about me, spouted all sorts of homophobic crap and went so far to call me the N-word. His YT account was deleted, I blocked him and his cronies from all social media. All because I gave his WAIFU a (PAIN-IS-CUPCAKE)
Years later I stumble upon this guy's pixiv account and found out he tried his hand at drawing. He drew my character. . . doing the naughties with another woman. . .who also had the MAN TRUNK. THAT I actually don't mind and respect the fact that he tried to make something with his own hands. Turns out all that homophobic crap was the result of him actually liking Chicks with Sticks and he didn't know how to maturely handle it. That or I successfully turned him "gay" as he defines it through the power of my artwork. To this day I avoid him like the plague but if he leaves me alone, I leave him alone, and I'm fine with that.

As an Introvert it’s easy to get lost in your own head/thoughts. At this point in my life I have way more important things to do than focusing on media consumption. In college that was a whole other story. Pod college different things take priority ( bills, utilities, rent, food etc). It’s nice to treat myself once in a while to get something that I might enjoy, but treat it like a desert. Try not to consume too much of it or you might spoil your appetite. Especially candy and sweets. That’s my armchair analysis for the day. Currently watching Girls und Panzer, and Samurai Pizza Cats. That’s gonna keep me busy for awhile, but also have other series to watch as well, plus personal recommendations, etc. So far both Shows are pretty good. I obviously did not know the aftermath of that but apparently many creepy fans reacted badly to it, because they were projecting onto her. Like with manby famous people, ypou always have the creeps who want to be close to these people or projecting a relationship into them. I am thankful in that regard for being like Jaiden, because I also do not care about being in a relationship except platonic ones. I feel so bad for Jaiden for having such creepy fans. I mainly watch from afar and just enjoy the stuff I enjoy, because I hate going outside. Jaidens video made me realize something about myself and I am grateful for that.
I just wish more people could seperate fiction from reality. I have a chronic illness that makes my perception of the world different from most people. But I still know that voice actors and singers are people. That content creators are people and that I have nothing to do with them except for liking their content. Everyone has a life outside of their job and most of it is not my business. I obviously like it when they share some personal stories but most of my interaction is through their content except for my friends, but that is something seperate. I guess my main thing is the fact I get obsessed with stories and fictional characters.
I like talking about certain shows or books I enjoy, but I do not care at all what the people behind the screen, voice or book are doing in their free time. That's their business. Why should I care? I just want to read the book and have a good time with the characters. That's my take and I am proud of it.
