Wow amazing stuff, I’m 22 and have got horrible bulging disc the past 15 months. I was on a cane for a bit and it made me so embarrassed that Im so young needing a cane…
I still only need my cane on bad flair ups but it’s changed my confidence and my life knowing that even tho I got a cane I’m going to hopefully be safe in a horrible situation (god forbid)
Thanks for all you do:)
Thanks for your comment! Sorry about your pain but I’m glad you are healing! Keep going and keep in touch!
Im using a cane I’m 25. Ur not alone man
Im in the same boat as you but im 65. I hope yours gets better soon . These videos are really great because people see a cane, and instantly, they see an easy mark. I studied ma most of my life, Wing Chun, for the past 13 years. This defense tutorial compliments that training very well as I have lost balance and stability in my legs. I get a lot out of Matts tutorials
I'm an aging fighting arts teacher with a good background in FMA and Japanese swordsmanship, and this may be the best quick-vid on cane fighting I've ever seen.
With a bad back and a vertebral artery funkiness messing with my brainstem, I'm relying more and more on a stick as my days progress. Thank you for such an excellent video.
EXCELLENT! A great comprehensive lesson, practical cane self-defense along with motivational and sound rehabilitation principles. The skills you highlighted, are, in fact, effective ways to cope with, AND to over-come doubts, fears, and personal limitations. Focus on what we CAN DO (in our own way), verses what we can't do (as others do). Strengthen your body in whatever ways are possible for you, and your mind will strengthen as well. I've seen martial artists with "so-called" handicaps, who found their own special ways to absolutely excel in their defensive skills. I previously suffered debilitating injuries, went through lengthy rehab, had to learn a new way to walk and how to strengthen a damaged shoulder, but over time, was able to compensate and regain important function. Don't forget the roles of Faith, positive thinking (hang out with like-minded people), and educate yourself about proper nutrition, these are ALL powerful prescriptions for a renewed life!
I'm 69 and ride my bicycle 2 hours nearly every day (just small physical limitations). I just bought a cane for self defense because it may make someone underestimate me. I've been training with the bo for a while.
Your training videos videos are great-I always learn from them -Thanks Matt
Thanks Elwyn!
I am 65 years old from Norway and suffer from osteoarthritis. Cane Training is perfect for me to loosen up my joints. At the same time, it's nice to be an older man who can defend himself with a simple weapon.
Absolutely! I hope you look into science-based nutritional strategies. They were enormously helpful for me.
Spent the last 60 years without building up callouses.
I have been a masseur since 1977, women don't appreciate rough hands during a massage.
For me it is about priorities.
So I have always worn gloves during my workouts.
I have no disdain for callous folks, I just never needed them.
That makes great sense! Thank you
Thank you for the lesson, impressive
Great refresher on the classics
Thanks Jason!
Thank you very much for this great video!
Yesterday I loved watching one of your videos with the Irish walking stick - awesome...🍀
The kubotan video from a short while ago was very helpful for me to feel safer.
A former neighbour of mine was beaten on her head with a bat... very evil and shocking, a crime committed by multiple attackers...
Looking much forward to another workout video with the kubotan for self-defense (if I remember correctly you have mentioned somewhere you are planning to make another kubotan video someday 🙂).
In the recent kubotan video a lot of the technique for self-defense is already shown in a great way...👍🙏.
I’m sorry to hear about your neighbor. That seems to be happening more and more. Stay safe!
@@pasquinilli many thanks, stay safe too!!!
Sensei Matt, Bentonite Clay can help with stomach issues. 1/2 tsp. in a glass of water has helped me many times. Is good for fighting infections and all that.
Thanks! I’ll try it!
@@pasquinilli Hope it helps! And, of course, do your own reading on it and how much and how long to take it etc. It's very interesting stuff.
Stay safe and God bless!
Great lesson Matt.
Thanks !
Another great cane video! Came from a background in Wing Chun but the systems weapons do not translate well to modern times, but the cane can be taken anywhere (without getting yourself arrested...)
Thanks Russ. Well said!
Waiting for my Cane Masters cane and start learning and training. I will be watching your videos learning the basics then evolve to the next level.
Thanks for posting your videos.
Wow! Never knew there were so many ways to use a simple cane in self-defenses! It would be nice to see what grip or hold you use when twirling the cane, you make it look so easy, Very Nice!
It’s effektiv you can tell. No fancy stuff direct to the point. Thanks
thanks Matt
Thank you Tim!
I'm very new to this. I'm not one for violence. I abhor it actually. Except in my fantasy/adventure books. I dislike bullies and hooligans even more. I have to walk with a can because of my neck, back and leg. I've felt so much like an easy target being like this. I'm a licensed firearm owner but I really would like to have another way of defense first besides pepper spray. So to let you know, thank you for posting this.
Use of a firearm dramatically increases the legal liability with no guarantee it would stop a determined attacker. There have been police officers who fired their side arms in self-defense, yet were taken down by assailants they tried to defend against. Pulling the trigger is also something that cannot be undone, and can potentially be a life-ender for both the attacker and the gun owner if sentenced to life-imprisonment. I know of an officer who mistakenly pulled and fired her hang gun into an assailant, thinking she had grabbed her taser. She is now in prison. While self-defense is legal in all U.S. states, Legal Verdicts ARE NOT ALWAYS JUST. So for myself, as an ordinary citizen, I believe less-lethal defenses are my best choices, assuming I am proficient in them. That's where the training comes in!
Matt, you and Joe Robaina are the top 2 Cane Self Defense trainers I've found yet. Keep on Caning, and helping us all to learn to defend ourselves. 👍👍 5🌟
I love your lesssons
Thank you Carlos!
Thanks for sharing your expertise. This was the first of your videos for me. I'll try a couple more.
At the 0:55 mark. That's why I prefer the Octagon cut Cane. Great tips, and tutoring. 👍👍 10🌟
Talk about striking and “time on target.”
Çok faydalı ve basit şekilde bastonu kullanmak için güzel ve anlaşılır teknikler
Thanks!!
Great video! I never thought of 18 as a self defense item. But as we age it makes sense. Thanks
You need to add pressure point attacks, and how the body responds when struck and the appropriate follow up responses. It's vital to practice striking targets not just swinging in the air, because you can lose your cane if your grip and wrist are week. What if your cane goes into some direction caused by impact that will twist your wrist and hurt your grip.
Great training technique demonstrations. What worries me the most is if the assailant is a specialist in Brazilian Jujitsu and fakes high and shoots for my legs. If I lose the advantage of distance, the cane is not much use. (I was enrolled in a Jujitsu class and got my arm broken as my opponent (friend) was passing my guard. So, I have a lot of respect for how fast a Jujitsu expert can move to the ground.
Yes. If they are an expert in bjj then you are in big trouble. Probably an bjj expert wouldn’t likely be attacking you. It’s more likely to be some punk thug coward preying on someone they think is an easy target.
@@pasquinilli Thanks for your reply. Years ago, I watched a Dog Brothers video where Top Dog was being attacked (in the friendly Gathering of the Pack, but the strikes were real and Top Dog's Kali sticks were of large diameter, and solid like a hardwood cane). Top Dog used repetitive powerful diagonal strikes in the air between him and the attacker. The whizzing sound of the Kali sticks convinced his opponent that the price of taking him down was too high. His opponent walked off.
I am retired and living in Brasil. BJJ is the least of your worries. People attack for various reasons. Arguments, money, road rage, sexual assault, jealousy just to name a few. If you are looking for trouble you will find it and it will come in various forms such as guns, knives, machetes, beer bottles, chains, gangs, dogs and the list goes on. With a cane you have one big advantage working in your favor. The element of surprise. The predator may see you as a weak and vulnerable ( need a cane to get around) easy target. They may not consider the cane to be a powerful weapon that can be used against them. They don't know that you have studied and are prepared for an assault attempt. If you keep your cool and strike fast you do not need to engage in a drawn out fight. You want to stun/hurt them and make your escape. As the defender in the encounter your victory is in survival. Play weak. Strike fast and decisive. Get away.
Use a cane properly, not wasting time and positioning by spinning and flailing with it. No one can beat a weapon on the ground! Don’t spin it, use two hands and learn classical combative techniques only.
What are the chances that a true Martial arts practitioner will turn criminal , c’mon man stop your nonsense 😬
One of the things I've never heard you mention. In the event that you have to use the cane and self-defense as soon as you can contact the police and report the assault. Because if the bad guy does it first you you may be seen as the aggressor.
Great information Matt I'm enjoying your content.
Great stuff. Ordering a cane for my afternoon walks downtown. It's getting sketchy there.
I used once a walking stick in self defense. I suffered a knee dislocation in 2018 and needed a cane. When exiting a drugstore after buy analgesics, I was surrounded by three felons. I hit one felon with a point thrust to the solar plexus, using a bayonet drill learned during my military service. He fell instantly on the ground in fetal position. The two other felons ran away.
I’ve used something similar to the warm up spin against an angry bee.
Another point in striking and timing if properly timed as the attacker is in motion advancing the forward motion acts to multiply the striking force generated
Thank you!
Awesome video
Thank you Jack!
Great training vids! I for myself have trained usually with a Bo or the next one shorter stick.
But often the training was not done with full power. So I made little progress.
That’s great! I bet you’ve made more than little progress!
good details, thank you very much.
I noticed the heavier than usual breathing Matt
Hahaha. Thanks. It depends on the day of the week. By the end of the week, I have taught 30-50 classes and my body is sore and tired. It takes more energy to be physical when I get really tired.
Thank you, gentlemen. I have been recommended to use a cane.🙏🙏💜👍
Great vid sir 🙏
The saying should be "I can't do it...YET"
Amen!!
Great advice Matt, I have the cane and did use it for 7 years. Can you add another in your videos, In SF area, many of the attacks comes with 5-7 guys together. I was on Rapid transit, 5 guys came on board and they see me sitting alone with my bag. They were looking at me and looks like they want to attack me. Good thing my stop came and I went out the other transit door, I am a disable senior over 70 and not afraid to use my cane, bit 5 guys??
Is the point/tip of the handle TSA Compliant?
Yes it is. Thanks!
My headaches also tend to go away when I exercise🧐
I really like your videos and techniques. A little different perspective. The first “teardrop” cane, if used to defend yourself, could be interpreted as a weapon as opposed to a cane you defended yourself with. And, as retired law enforcement, even with our batons, we are taught to not go to the head, intentionally against an unarmed assailant. All the other targets should be exhausted first before going for a death strike. I carry a nice, twisted barrel cane that gives lots of smaller strike points without the obvious nature of it being a weapon. Less attention to the cane, the better. Then again, judged by 12 or carried by six?
one more thing, would you put your hand through the loop and grasp in your palm?
Not me. I would want more options to move it around. You could though and that would also be a good option
thanks very much for helping me, and teaching me. your great. i'm 74 . thanks again . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very informitive, very good vidio
I’m concerned the "wooden" Cain is weakened by shaving the wood down, to form that edged shape. I think leaving it rounded would keep it stronger, and hurt just about as bad.
Where can we find that stringed cane, sifu ?
The Travel Master cane ?
Look here canemasters.com/affiliate-pages/quantum-martial-arts/quantum-stealth-traveler-cane
I have a hollow cane with a 12" blade in it but probably not very legal. Using a regular cane for defense isn't going to land you in jail jail, probably.
Hi, Matt , when you carry your cane in your car , would you still leave the paracord on if you had to defend yourself? thanks , bob
Yes the pair cord helps with grip especially if your hands are sweaty or bloody For Self Defense
thank you , i forgot one thing , would you lace the loop in yhe palm of your hand for extra grip?
What is a good makeshift bag ??
Where did you get that cane with the teardrop?
Have to be ready nowadays
LOL. If I could move like that; I wouldn't need a cane.
Haha. Good point!
How can I get an canes with square trunk like yours? Thanks

Do you size your canes ? What is the optimal length per individual ? Some of us are vertically challenged and a big cane would be too long to be an effective walking tool.
What kind of wood is the cane made of, what is the diameter of the cane and the radius of the handle?
Can you get those in the UK ???
I think so Terry. I know that some of my students there have gotten them. Let me ask the company for you.
This is all well and good assuming you don't actually NEED the walking stick/cane to support your body weight because of a physical disability.
Use two. One to keep you up, the other for self defense.
@@pasquinilli Lol...
I'm looking at a KA-BAR cane. Any opinions out there for it? ~Thanks
It’s a good cane but heavy. Thanks!
Looks like the cane without the palm rest is easier to transition to slide down the shaft. Which one is better? Also what length cane do i get? And wow didnt know those cane is costly, didnt know it cost that much.
I like the cane masters dojo cane. It will last forever and is relatively inexpensive. 36” is the standard length. Measure from your wrist to the floor. Palm rest is good and you can get used to sliding past it the same way as if it was not there. Just takes a little practice. Is there one with a 410 built in. Haha. Seriously. Iam runing two canes and my upper body is shot too. I think a personal alarm device and a bear spray would be more up my alley. Plus, I don't want to kill the guy. I guess now you know why canes are not allowed in seniors residents.
You all show these defence moves like the person going to be in the same position after the first hit
Is it okay to carry a cane even if it’s not something I’m normally needing?
Yes. It is common too
Where do I buy your Oak cane, pls send me the link.
Thanks
Got it: Crotch, Solar Plexus, Shoulders, Neck, Head.
Yes! Thanks John!
But, what if the crotch shot doubles them over and you can't get a solar plexus shot ... are chop to the back of head?
I would avoid a headshot I wouldn't practice doing a head shot because the chance of a fatality is too high. If I broke your leg and I could get away, if you were out robbing people do like we wouldn't announce that I broke your leg because you were robbing me. Avoid court, don't kill.
I’m new at this and would like to purchase a defense cane , I’m 73 years old 4 back surgery. Where do I go to purchase one ?
What is the black rubber on the first cane of this video for? And you told that you suck the cane with oil - why?
The rubber on the tip protects the wood from the ground. The oil makes the wood strong and flexible and heavy.
@@pasquinilli thx ... but I didnt wa t ro know about the rubber at the bottom ... there is a rubbersealing close to the handle
Still can't get one in the UK
Where do you buy those canes
Donde se puede comprar un bastón de esos .
What do you do when he gets ahold of the cane?
Great question. Rarely addressed in most of my martial arts training. The real challenge in deploying a weapon is RETAINING the weapon. If your attacker gets hold of it you have lost any advantage you may have had.
Where to buy?
How do you feel about a bubba stick
👏 bravo mais pas en français 😢
Sir, Thank you. Where can I find and purchase a tear drop cane? I am being threatened by a man in my apartment complex. He is black and I'm the only Caucasian man living here. He has threatened to kill me and F-me up. I will defend myself!
Yes. Look here. It’s a customized option on any of their canes canemasters.com/?ref=GpLhKkHm_wUID
I dont think he likes that punch bag
Hahah. Those punching bags don’t hit back!
Keep Punching!!!

Teach the close in attack, people that Need a cane generally won't have the wear with all to swing a cane and strike effectively. KNOW WHAT, NEVER MIND, IM 74, I STARTED MARTIAL TRAING AT AGE 6.
