Wow amazing stuff, I’m 22 and have got horrible bulging disc the past 15 months. I was on a cane for a bit and it made me so embarrassed that Im so young needing a cane…
I still only need my cane on bad flair ups but it’s changed my confidence and my life knowing that even tho I got a cane I’m going to hopefully be safe in a horrible situation (god forbid)
    Thanks for all you do:)

Im in the same boat as you but im 65. I hope yours gets better soon . These videos are really great because people see a cane, and instantly, they see an easy mark. I studied ma most of my life, Wing Chun, for the past 13 years. This defense tutorial compliments that training very well as I have lost balance and stability in my legs. I get a lot out of Matts tutorials

EXCELLENT! A great comprehensive lesson, practical cane self-defense along with motivational and sound rehabilitation principles. The skills you highlighted, are, in fact, effective ways to cope with, AND to over-come doubts, fears, and personal limitations. Focus on what we CAN DO (in our own way), verses what we can't do (as others do). Strengthen your body in whatever ways are possible for you, and your mind will strengthen as well. I've seen martial artists with "so-called" handicaps, who found their own special ways to absolutely excel in their defensive skills. I previously suffered debilitating injuries, went through lengthy rehab, had to learn a new way to walk and how to strengthen a damaged shoulder, but over time, was able to compensate and regain important function. Don't forget the roles of Faith, positive thinking (hang out with like-minded people), and educate yourself about proper nutrition, these are ALL powerful prescriptions for a renewed life!

I'm very new to this. I'm not one for violence. I abhor it actually. Except in my fantasy/adventure books. I dislike bullies and hooligans even more. I have to walk with a can because of my neck, back and leg. I've felt so much like an easy target being like this. I'm a licensed firearm owner but I really would like to have another way of defense first besides pepper spray. So to let you know, thank you for posting this.

    • @dr.j6747
      @dr.j6747 Месяц назад

Use of a firearm dramatically increases the legal liability with no guarantee it would stop a determined attacker. There have been police officers who fired their side arms in self-defense, yet were taken down by assailants they tried to defend against. Pulling the trigger is also something that cannot be undone, and can potentially be a life-ender for both the attacker and the gun owner if sentenced to life-imprisonment. I know of an officer who mistakenly pulled and fired her hang gun into an assailant, thinking she had grabbed her taser. She is now in prison. While self-defense is legal in all U.S. states, Legal Verdicts ARE NOT ALWAYS JUST. So for myself, as an ordinary citizen, I believe less-lethal defenses are my best choices, assuming I am proficient in them. That's where the training comes in!

You need to add pressure point attacks, and how the body responds when struck and the appropriate follow up responses. It's vital to practice striking targets not just swinging in the air, because you can lose your cane if your grip and wrist are week. What if your cane goes into some direction caused by impact that will twist your wrist and hurt your grip.

Great training technique demonstrations. What worries me the most is if the assailant is a specialist in Brazilian Jujitsu and fakes high and shoots for my legs. If I lose the advantage of distance, the cane is not much use. (I was enrolled in a Jujitsu class and got my arm broken as my opponent (friend) was passing my guard. So, I have a lot of respect for how fast a Jujitsu expert can move to the ground.

    • @pasquinilli

Yes. If they are an expert in bjj then you are in big trouble. Probably an bjj expert wouldn’t likely be attacking you. It’s more likely to be some punk thug coward preying on someone they think is an easy target.

@@pasquinilli Thanks for your reply. Years ago, I watched a Dog Brothers video where Top Dog was being attacked (in the friendly Gathering of the Pack, but the strikes were real and Top Dog's Kali sticks were of large diameter, and solid like a hardwood cane). Top Dog used repetitive powerful diagonal strikes in the air between him and the attacker. The whizzing sound of the Kali sticks convinced his opponent that the price of taking him down was too high. His opponent walked off.

I am retired and living in Brasil. BJJ is the least of your worries. People attack for various reasons. Arguments, money, road rage, sexual assault, jealousy just to name a few. If you are looking for trouble you will find it and it will come in various forms such as guns, knives, machetes, beer bottles, chains, gangs, dogs and the list goes on. With a cane you have one big advantage working in your favor. The element of surprise. The predator may see you as a weak and vulnerable ( need a cane to get around) easy target. They may not consider the cane to be a powerful weapon that can be used against them. They don't know that you have studied and are prepared for an assault attempt. If you keep your cool and strike fast you do not need to engage in a drawn out fight. You want to stun/hurt them and make your escape. As the defender in the encounter your victory is in survival. Play weak. Strike fast and decisive. Get away.

Use a cane properly, not wasting time and positioning by spinning and flailing with it. No one can beat a weapon on the ground! Don’t spin it, use two hands and learn classical combative techniques only.

I used once a walking stick in self defense. I suffered a knee dislocation in 2018 and needed a cane. When exiting a drugstore after buy analgesics, I was surrounded by three felons. I hit one felon with a point thrust to the solar plexus, using a bayonet drill learned during my military service. He fell instantly on the ground in fetal position. The two other felons ran away.

I really like your videos and techniques. A little different perspective. The first “teardrop” cane, if used to defend yourself, could be interpreted as a weapon as opposed to a cane you defended yourself with. And, as retired law enforcement, even with our batons, we are taught to not go to the head, intentionally against an unarmed assailant. All the other targets should be exhausted first before going for a death strike. I carry a nice, twisted barrel cane that gives lots of smaller strike points without the obvious nature of it being a weapon. Less attention to the cane, the better. Then again, judged by 12 or carried by six?

What do you do when he gets ahold of the cane?

Great question. Rarely addressed in most of my martial arts training. The real challenge in deploying a weapon is RETAINING the weapon. If your attacker gets hold of it you have lost any advantage you may have had.

Sir, Thank you. Where can I find and purchase a tear drop cane? I am being threatened by a man in my apartment complex. He is black and I'm the only Caucasian man living here. He has threatened to kill me and F-me up. I will defend myself!

Teach the close in attack, people that Need a cane generally won't have the wear with all to swing a cane and strike effectively. KNOW WHAT, NEVER MIND, IM 74, I STARTED MARTIAL TRAING AT AGE 6. JUDO AND BOXING AND GYMNASTICS AT BOYS CLUB OF st. Louis mo at 11th and Sydney. A novice is doomed in an assault.
