  • By 1975, it was clear the original equipment purchased by GO Transit for use on its commuter train services were inadequate to the system's needs. But as there was only so much longer the trains could be, GO decided they needed to go taller. To test double-decker operation, GO borrowed two-level "Gallery" cars from Chicago & North Western Railroad and tested them from January to April 1976. Richard Glaze was there to capture the test runs that pre-saged the system's move to its own groundbreaking double-decker cars.

Great video. I've never ridden in a gallery car, but they don't look pleasant. Very glad GO created the now standard bi-level commuter car design - it's wonderful!

They are still running them in Chicago on their Metra system.

@@gedias1 yeah well they're pretty easy to avoid for me since I don't visit Chicago that often and when I do go there I can manage on the L and buses.

@@ketch_up Yeah, the Metra is the equivalent of the GO system, so if you are remaining in the city, it is not of much use to you. But, those trains on the inside look *exactly* the same now as it did in this video from 1975.

Never quite realized just how much extra locomotive was added to the back of a GP40 to make the TC version

The interior looks exactly like Chicago's Metra trains today. They haven't changed much in 45 years.

According to the late Robert John's, GO transits director of equipment at the time, the Gallery cars were slow to load and unload.
The Montreal cars were Budd designed and mirror the cars from "The Burlington". The inside layouts are the same in both cars.
There was no need for a trainman to collect tickets on GO, so a gallery was not necessary.
