- Our immune system is not just important for reducing the risk of getting an infection, but also for increasing our overall wellbeing.
This Bitesize clip is from episode 125 of the podcast with Dr Jenna Macciochi - a researcher and lecturer.
Jenna explains that our immune system is affected by over nutrition and under nutrition, and that fasting can help replenish our immune system
It’s not just what we’re eating that matters, but also the quantity and timing of our food intake. When we eat, there’s a subtle inflammation that occurs in the body and this is quite normal. Eating enough, and the right things, at one meal means that we don’t necessarily need to eat until the next meal. This break between eating meals assists our gut health and our overall health.
Eating all our food within a 12 hour window is achievable for most of us and allows our body time to regenerate and our gut to perform other tasks.
Looking after our immune system is important, both for how we feel today and for our future health.

Eating ONLY when hungry has helped me find balance with my diet. It isn’t easy as aroma or memory of a delicious food can easily encourage eating even when full!
Just so others know, the feeling of hunger is a terrible source of nutritional decision making, because it does not correlate with nutrition. Do not get misled by the comment above.
I am fasting today. I had grown 5 kilos over... since the past year because i stopped my regular fasting twice a week Mondays & Thursdays dawn to dusk (Islamic sunnah). I started the sunnah fasting again less than a month ago. And i hv lost half of that extra weight. And feeling really light & awesome. Fasting is truly amazing!
Thank you very much for this podcast! Personally vegan diet whole food plant base and intermitent fasting helped me with diabetes T2 plus boosting my energy plus it is the best choice for animals and the planet...
Many many people have been helped by a carnivore diet too....not just with diabetes, but autoimmune issues, weight control, blood pressure regulation, skin health, etc etc...
Regenerative agriculture which includes animals as part of the whole system is best for the planet.
Totally, me too ✌️
@@rabkad5673 It is a personal matter, i prefer this lifestyle, someone else prefers something else
@@sandytw5229 Great!
Veganism already is a fast… Orthodox Christians do vegan diet for a fast… and then you fast after!!??
I think it also has to do with what and how much you eat at once. For instance I only eat fresh whole foods no animal products, nothing processed, no added sugar, no oils, nothing fried or overcooked, I only steam my food, and minimum calories around 1500 to 1600 a day but I do eat a little bit throughout the day and no big meals. The most I eat at one sitting is a sweet potato with nothing on it. I never over eat nor eat right before bed. I eat for the energy I require for the tasks at hand. When I eat I am energized and never feel lethargic after I eat. If I eat an entire meal I feel bloated and tired. I have not over eaten in years and stick to a strict eating regimen. 🙃
Also if you think back to how we evolved we were first gatherings and would have gathered food and ate throughout the day as we found food yeah ?
I wasn't there when we "evolved "
Some accounts say we killed a whale and ate plenty then fasted til the next time. Whatever works is good yeah?
But USA is FAT
Olive oil is a wonder food. You need some good fats otherwise your diet is not balanced. A Mediterranean diet is the best diet, not yours. You are probably deficient in many things. B12 to start with. Anyway, this is your research not mine. Eating one potato with nothing on it sounds like you have an eating disorder to be honest. I do not overeat either but your comment here sounds odd to me.
"No animal products, no oils, only steam my food" - Paul you need fat. You are eating carbs only and that is not good. Daily use of olive oil kept Jeanne Calment going for 122 years. Who are you listening to that has a better track record than that?
Sounds like the op is underweight
Lots of in depth information about fasting from youtuber Dr. Mindy Pelz. Maybe she could be interviewed on this podcast? I
I eat a wholefood vegan diet and I eat only during the hours of daylight. I stick to a n 8 hour window for 3 meals. I included anti inflammatory foods like turmeric and ginger.0
If people eat 15 times a day that is just gross. No wonder the UK is so fat. No wonder I left. I have always only eaten when hungry and I have always weighed 50 kgs for 20 years. 1-2 meals a day. I feel no need to snack. I naturally fast 18:6 or 20:4 every day no problem and even before all this new science. This is when I naturally desire to eat. The UK has a big problem. If they were out and about hiking mountains in Norway every day like me, they simply wouldn't overeat on the sofa out of boredom!
I don't really know how to thank you Dr odija on RUclips for making me to live like my fellow mates and for curing me from diabetes.... thank you so much may God always strengthen you and your work.!!!!!!!!
I gues it was type 2 diabetes not type one? Thank you
makes sense. thanks.
Great info 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
eating is inflammatory
Jesus said WHEN YE FAST....
Anything for Parry-Romberg syndrome
Who's the guy? He don't need no person there, he needs a mic and a big mirror.
I honestly wish i could fast but i struggle to not eat when im actually hungry
I struggled the same way. Couldn’t last more than 24 hours, but I loaded up on a ton of water and tea throughout the day and I was able to make it 48
I would get actual hunger pains until I cut WAY BACK on carbohydrates/ sugar
Almost guaranteed that's because when you do eat it's unhealthy. I bet you don't get full doses of all 13 essential vitamins when you eat, much less important minerals and balanced macros. You can fast, but you're doing it wrong.
I don't know...but a 12hr window of eating still seems like alot of time spent eating.
That's like 8:00am to 8:00pm not much different than the way society is eating now.
Yes it is a lot of time spent eating
Does not mean eat all the time. Stick to 3 meals in that time
How does intermittent fasting impact the immune system?
Very broad question. Impossible to answer precisely because the question isn't precise
It wakes the body up like a signal of danger to start using all life saving systems. With 3-4 meals a day the body is slow and "genes" become inactive and dormant.
She clearly state that in video starting, intermittent fasting make u grow new immune cells in bone marrow & its benefical.
Is it okay to fast when I'm sick with a cold?
Absolutely. If I have a cold coming on I immediately begin a multi day fast. End of cold.
Will a 3 day fast get rid of Candida?
Probably not. Look into liver flushing
I'm confused. How is the # of food not relevant in the comparison between eating over the course of a day versus eating over the course of a week? The comparison seems a little comparison of apples and orange, without more clarity.
Can someone explain this to me? Or is there something I can read which explains this? I'm having problems understanding how this applies to the actual decisions. Seems like some details or important parts of his argument were somehow omitted.
Autophagy, it basically recycles old and dead cells in the body and makes brand new ones which function better.
@@Kazuk0100 I'm curious about the specifics and/or the math that he's attempting to apply.
But why my cholesterol increased???
internet video producers are often times very shady people, they deliver inaccurate and missleading informations!, First, your cholesteron increaded becase your body wants feed its self be relasing stored fat into blood stream . Second Imunity is not boosted during fasting at all, its impared! what might be boosted is Imune response after refiding, but these 2 are totally different actions, please dont belive these video producers, they are not thrust worthy
Mmmmmhhhh yeah
They are talking in circles. Cringe
This is a terrible interview
