    The DNR has put restrictions on what bucks can be shot so yes, lower deer harvest should be expected.

    I don't have your downstate problems, I have U.P problems. We've had hard winters and the deer returned but now that we have wolf's the deer population has gotten smaller and smaller.
    Supposedly we have 126,000 Whitetails and supposedly we have 600 wolf's. I believe the wolf population is much, much higher than 600, more like double that.
    If that number is true why do hunters see wolf's but not see deer?
    This is my eighth year of not shooting a deer. Have I seen deer? Yes. I still hunted six full days during rifle season and this year I saw 2 deer, a spike and a fork but not one other single deer, not a doe, fawn or fleeting tail.
    A know a disabled guy that spent 11 full days in his blind, hunting over bait during the peak of the rut and did not see a single deer!
    Seven years ago it was my 14 year old sons first deer season was spent sitting in a blind. After a few days hunting he asked me,
    "Dad if we see a deer should I even shoot it?"
    "What do you mean?"
    "We aren't seeing anything so there aren't a lot of deer. Wouldn't me shooting one just make it worse?"
    My son, now 22, has totally lost interest in deer hunting.
    I'd like to add that I did not see a wolf this year still hunting I rarely do but their tracks far outnumbered Whitetails.
    We are so far out of balance.
    I've been hunting for 42 year and this year was my last. I cannot keep supporting a DNR that does not support me. It's about revenue for the DNR and not about wildlife management. Park passes and other DNR money-makers will just increase in price to compensate.
    Since nothing is being done about the predator issues we have I think that it's long overdue that downstate should have wolf's reintroduced. All those tree huggers can have all the wolf's they want. When your pets start to go missing and your precious Elk herd and deer herd gets smacked down maybe then the DNR might decide to make a step in the correct direction.

    • @wdtaut5650
      @wdtaut5650 8 месяцев назад +1

      "It's about revenue for the DNR..." Man, you are so right! For decades, the DNR has been more concerned about financial resources than natural resources. Down here, we have the White Pine Trail, a state park. The DNR has never figured a way to make money from it so they just ignore it. Remember when the 'park pass' was made part of your car registration? They told us it would cover state parks entry and boat ramps that charged a fee. Took them about a minute and a half to make it mandatory for all boat ramps (including the ones that were free before) _and_ stream access points (they never had a charge before). Then they added state forest campgrounds...not the camping (that wasn't free already), just to drive in and look or use the toilet, you had to have the '"state park pass".

      @boygirlandadad5814 8 месяцев назад

      @@wdtaut5650 yep. The state park near me, Twin Lakes, stopped me from getting potable water because it's "only for campers". Before that they started charging me 4 dollars for a shower before I got my sauna and shower system all hooked up.

Ruined my season brought more gun hunters into my season and took the challenge away from seeing the deer and pulling back a bow with out them knowing. Lets make the sport easier lol well if its easy it aint worth doing the reward isnt as good so by kids . And now were stuck with guys shooting everything and less and less people participating. Bring back the rules from early 90's and watch people come back oh and lower the price on tags its turning into a rich mans sport not a sportsman sport.
    Hell if u are low income give them a tag how about that

  • @Kurtdog63

    Kentucky had a massive acorn crop this season. Deer harvest was down because there was so much food, deer did not have to travel from bedding to feeding areas. Deer depended less on agricultural fields, and baiting (legal here) was less effective for many hunters that depend on that type of hunting to bring deer in to their hunting location.

  • @rsa9082

    In that one section they say is cheaper to hunt ????? It cost me $34 to buy a one buck tag in 2023.
    As for to many does or longer season !!
    For many years now they’ve (DNR) had seasons open up in JUNE! Killing does that just dropped their fawns WTH ! I couldn’t believe it when I read it in the hunting guide book from the Michigan DNR Then they extended antlerless tags into January. Well a lot of bucks drop their antlers the end of December into January. I’ve heard of a few that shot “antlerless” deer in January but ended up being bucks. So how do you get a very declined deer heard? By having eradication of them for seven months out of the year. I’ve hunted in this area since the early 80’s. I’ve never seen the heard so low. Now these numbers only included hunters. Not the farmers that get unlimited tags for crop damage either.
    Now back to the management of the heard. I have a neighbor that had the dnr on his trailcams in the dark with silencers on private property without permission! actually shot a buck he’s been watching all year. Now if any other people would have done anything like that we’d be looking at prison time. Something is seriously messed up here.
    The deer head is NOT high I fear with one bad winter and the same practices we’d all be going to different states to get venison.
    Oh and I stopped fishing because it’s almost impossible to do it legally according to their now 70+ page book I actually stopped a DNR officer and asked him about fishing creeks it was three different pages to figure out if I could pull over a fish a creek.

    It's not the culture or declining hunters or whatever else he said it's the fact it's so hard to hunt a deer or anything with all the legal bs. They look for literally any reason to fine you after you pay outrageous fees to hunt in the first place for someone new to get into hunting it is almost impossible to not walk out without a fine unless you're in school for a week. Reading all the restrictions and all the rules and all the stuff you have to remember. You need a large book in your pocket so you don't get fined. You've got DNR agents with a spotting scope a mile away. Watching you do every little thing and just writing in there little notebook. Here's a fine. Here's a fine. Here's a fine you take a deer and you miss one little step. And oh here is 185 fine and 1,700 in restitution for a deer that you paid to shoot in first place

      When I started fishing and hunting in Michigan (believe me, it was a long time ago. The Chad character wasn't born then.), we considered the DNR (Conservation Dept. then) to be our partners, helping to improve our fishing and hunting. The creation of he DNR changed all that. At best, we became research subjects for the biologists, a nuisance to law enforcement, and actual enemies of wildlife to all the tree huggers they hired. Remember that woman appointed to the NRC who's first priority was to find out how much damage it does dragging a deer out of the woods? If she had ever learned fishermen actually walk in the water we would have been doomed. That's today's DNR -- politics and money. Your money, the more the better, higher and more license fees, higher and more fines.
