The issue here Mat was that you put 91 in a car tuned in the UK, which is fine in a pinch but not for drag racing!!! Someone should have advised you to put octane booster in there at least!

didn't even finish the video yet but saw you filling up the car with 91 aki (95 ron) in a tuned car, that's usually a bad idea lol. Tuned cars need octane if not you'll have engine knock and boom
@@tyler141 the ECU can only protect so much, OEM it is fine as boost/timing is not so aggressive as it's meant to run everywhere in the world even with low octane. We are talking a tuned car here, with much more aggressive timing and boost. The ECU will indeed have retarded the timing extremely but due to the much more aggressive settings it wasn't enough to prevent damage. If you are in the tuning world you will understand this, it happens all the time when people are using wrong fuels in tuned cars. Datalogs will show the same thing.
It's either dropped a valve or it's down to a crappy remap and it's detonated and melted the electrode off the spark plug and melted the piston and welded it to the cylinder bore, think you need to bore scope it before you decide on doing anything further.
i'm not a long time viewer so I'm not sure of the backstory, but its really cool seeing Mat's dad involved and seemingly enjoying himself. I'm sure its not all smiles, life never is, but at least from the outside it seems like a brilliant relationship. Wish you lot all the best

Thank you for the time and effort all you guys but in for us to enjoy!!
+1 on the head lifting under too much boost. Subarus need head studs/ over sized when running nutty boost for that reason. The 91 will cause knock, the ecu should be able to account & reduce timing, if it doesn't adjust enough or not learned fast enough it could easily try to run too much timing & cause bad knock/ detonation/ pre-ignition
I would guess lower octane fuel in the states compared to the UK led to detonation which blew a rod causing the piston or rod to crack the block allowing coolant into the combustion chamber. This might explain the coolant and the damage to the spark plug as the piston probably hit it. It might have needed a different tune for the lower octane fuel. I’m very sorry for your car but it does make a great episode, and you get to make more great ones fixing it. Best of luck.
Yeah 3:48 Knock Knock 😂 Who's their? Just some 91 Vpower 😂😂 Probably says minimum Octane 95 on the Fuel cap 😂😂 Well atleast the Piston has *Subscribed* 😂😂
@@statementleaver8095 US 91 is equivalent to 95 in the UK. Problem is once you get a map and crank the boost up the margin for safety gets a LOT smaller. And this is exactly why most cars are never mapped from the factory to make as much power as they actually can.....absolutely no doubt it was the fuel.

Hi Mat, For the coolant on the Spark Plugs my tip is Headgasket being blown. Same with the melted overheated Spark plug. Although it could be not enough torque was applied on the melted one, but I think here it is like on the others thew head gasket, just that oen was maybe the first that blew. And like others pointed out, it can be to low octane rating on the fuel. With the mismatch in the fuel I thinbk the bets is replace the gasket and then recalibrate with a tuner, to accomodate the lower octane on the US fuel. I hope this helps and best of luck! :)
Mat's channel is killing it and really well deserved. Hard work, tension, et al. Enter Dad & it reaches a new dimension. Thanks for a great channel Mat, cheers, John. UK.

@@KINGofEPICNESS99 Seeing the condition of the top of the pistons will at least help determine how bad things have gotten, and it only takes the time it took to take the plugs out. When my engine went I could see the broken conrod THROUGH the piston, lol!
I think you are right Mat about the 91 fuel, it looks like the electrode on cyl 2 spark plug has just melted. Also the presence of water in the other cylinders suggests the seizure was caused by the hydraulic pressure in the engine.

Hey Mate, I've got a customer who had a very similar issue. It was the head gasket that had failed on the right bank. Admittedly, the spark plug wasn't chewed up, but that could have been from a hydrolock sending a piston out. Far-fetched theory could be that its the fuel as they have fuel that our cars aren't mapped for. He doesn't explain the coolant but could be broken cylinder head from detonation.Hope I helped! Good luck!!!
yeah savingsalvage had the same problem with an R8 V8 (same engine i think) one of the pistons lunched itself on the spark plug. Caput engine i'm afraid.
Here’s my best bet. The low octane fuel caused some savage pre ignition under the intense load of the drag race. The cylinder with the destroyed plug was the one that failed first. I think when you get into it you’ll see severe damage to the cylinder wall / piston / con rod / con rod bearing for that cylinder. It’s allowed coolant and oil to mix and general mayhem. The bits of shrapnel will now be everywhere and probably caused secondary damage in other parts of the engine (hopefully the turbos are ok) … Pretty sure it’ll need a new engine & coolers etc (but at least you can keep the old one for some spare parts)
Oh man, shattered! Saw on the mk2 channel you got it there 🙌🏽 hope you enjoy Vegas, it’s intense!! Guess a rebuild is in the mix now though 😉. Also, love how positive you and your dad are!!

18:30 Engine locked up from mechanical blockage. Piston/rod is probably caught between the crank and the wall of the engine block. Alternatively the chain could have snapped and pinned up inside. Ive seen this happen too, generally when the engine is being put through hell.... Might be something to look at. Start with the timing cover... Then if nothing there, The heads need to come off. Or you could just pre-emptively pull the engine... Its going to need to come out anyway you slice it. Just drop it and the transmission along with the subframe to hold it together all at once.

Well, he has some other supercars at home. The financial loss on this most likely will be covered by the clicks of videos about fixing this car. I'd still be laughing too. If this was my only car and i wouldn't have enough money to fix it - i'd be crying
Great video showing the ups and downs of project cars! The Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly seems like the result of over tuning and a valve dropping. Hopefully we learn from this and do reliability mods before big power mods🤞
Not sure if you'll see this comment, but head gasket failure would have all the symptoms you're seeing. Coolant in the cylinder leading to hot steam which would cause the spark plug to retain heat and get hotter and hotter, then detonate. That would explain the missing plug tip (which might still be living in the engine somewhere) and the smoke from the exhaust on the drag run. The failure of the gasket is likely around the area where the detonated plug is as that's where most of the coolant would have gotten into the cylinder initially. Hope you get it sorted - love the videos.
God I love how both you and your dad are always smiling. Even when the worst of things can happen you guys always manage to keep a cool head and stay possitive. I have so much respect for that, I can olny aspire to be like that!
Exactly, dumbest stunt ever...even for 91/95 CA fuel is just crap. Running a highly boosted tuned engine on this stuff when it was tuned for proper fuel and then gun it down a runway... WTF did they think was going to happen
To be fair the lambdas and knock sensors should save the engine in standard form but if its been tuned with zero overhead its run lean and they need a new engine.
Coolant in the oil, could be the PCV has failed and your mixing oil and coolant. We had it in S4. PCV is plastic and in middle of the V, under the supercharger in our car but has been RS6 issue too. Linked to your recall 😞

Matt just wanted to say your videos are fantastic! I really enjoy watching them, your commentary all the way to the video editing is just spot on. Keep up the great work mate
Having personally tuned engines for a few years & having even cut new cylinder head profiles, I can categorically state from previous experience that this engine is showing signs of detonation, having seen that spark plug condition. When this occurs the piston crown will often melt, become holed, or even break up emitting fragments of piston & rings into the engine, which then passes into the circulated oil. The cause is due to a lean mixture (too much air) usually caused by running excessive boost pressure, or partially clogged fuel filter, clogged injectors, or oxygen sensor related issue/failure. Pieces or shards of piston or ring material may have caused engine seizure. The other engine killing factor is substantial torque increases as noted from the tune. The torque increase can bend & break standard rods. Hope this prognosis may help a bit.
Same happened to me. Stage 2 tuned Audi S3 sent at 172mph and boom. Cylinder 2 bottom through to top. So frustrating. I managed to find another engine for 2.7k and out it in myself

Well, the RS6 runs with water to air inter-cooler which is located in the intake manifold, I heard that it was some sort of a problem, the inter cooler cracks so the coolant is getting in the engine, definitely have a look on that.
I'm agreeing with your hydro locked statement indeed. However, when you stated the anti freeze was gone, and oil level over full as shown by car dash .. which is quite awesome I might add, I immediately felt ... blown head gasket. I'm thinking you'd want to drain the oil to tell. I was actually shocked to see u guys attempt to start it before drain n oil inspection. Then pull oil pan and inspect for metal .. or even inspect oil filter for metal shavings. Then attempt to rotate motor by hand at crank to test for lock or free. I suspect that recall struck.. Hehe tell your dad my friends n I used to pull all nights motor swaps in my teens. Love the videos and really enjoyed watching. Your accent is the extra hook. Hehe . Thanks for the great video.
Deffo the fuel, but what a way to go. its an Audi RS was bound to throw a rod at some point at least it did it somewhere sunny and not in the flooded wintery hell that is the UK. You'll get it fixed you've got the right outlook and its onwards and upwards!
The minute there’s issues with the spark plugs, everything else is irrelevant. There are shards of metal in the engine. Needs to be sorted asap. Plus, you’ve got the pistons, rocker covers, oil ( doesn’t matter that there’s not much, it’s an issue ). Oil mixed with coolant = PCV. valve replacement, water pump…check turbos, just ensure the car is free of anything metal in the engine and filters. Iridium spark plugs are best ( better spark ) when replaced. Good luck mate
This never seems to be boring when watching your channel always some drama but I know you always come through with a plan a big thanks to Freddie for helping Matt out you are a true friend indeed and a big thanks to DDE for helping our boy out
The tune ye got before ye shipped over is adjusted to the gas ye have in the UK, so if its maxed out just before knock with timing, ye get over to the US, fill up with lower octane gas, well.. Premature detonation, bad knock, a lot of things can happen at once, burn plugs, lift head, blow gasket etc.. Thats my guess..

didn't even finish the video yet but saw you filling up the car with 91 aki (95 ron) in a tuned car, that's usually a bad idea lol. Tuned cars need octane if not you'll have engine knock and boom
This
100%
This is why there’s knock sensors - the ECU has the ability to dynamically retard the timing. Doubtful 91 caused this.
Yeah, I literally paused when he was putting it in, 3:50 to see, 91Oct, oh damn :/
It's either dropped a valve or it's down to a crappy remap and it's detonated and melted the electrode off the spark plug and melted the piston and welded it to the cylinder bore, think you need to bore scope it before you decide on doing anything further.
You broke it 😂your dads a legend ❤
i'm not a long time viewer so I'm not sure of the backstory, but its really cool seeing Mat's dad involved and seemingly enjoying himself. I'm sure its not all smiles, life never is, but at least from the outside it seems like a brilliant relationship. Wish you lot all the best
I absolutely love these videos - they are absolutely great - content - editing - everything - I really hope that you don't stop this type of content with all your mishaps and learnings as you grow bigger, as you will, because this humbleness and reality is what bought many of us here in the first place - please don't lose that and start flexing to something else as many channels do - this is by far one of the best channels on the internet! Thank you for the time and effort all you guys but in for us to enjoy!!
Just found this channel man I love it can’t seem to stop watching I watched the m5 being rebuilt and fell in love
Matt taught me to continue smiling and being positive regardless of the setback. Instead of being negative, he focused on finding solutions.
Matt helping me say positive, RS life is like a bag of revels .
You’ve got to hand it to mat’s dad his attitude to problems
Is amazing
😀
+1 on the head lifting under too much boost. Subarus need head studs/ over sized when running nutty boost for that reason. The 91 will cause knock, the ecu should be able to account & reduce timing, if it doesn't adjust enough or not learned fast enough it could easily try to run too much timing & cause bad knock/ detonation/ pre-ignition
This Father Son reliationship is goals. Also, I love Freddy
Yeah 3:48
Knock Knock 😂 Who's their?
Just some 91 Vpower 😂😂
Probably says minimum Octane 95 on the Fuel cap 😂😂
Well atleast the Piston has *Subscribed* 😂😂
@@statementleaver8095 US 91 is equivalent to 95 in the UK. Problem is once you get a map and crank the boost up the margin for safety gets a LOT smaller. Hi Mat,
For the coolant on the Spark Plugs my tip is Headgasket being blown.
UK.
100% agree
Nuts to me you found yourself in Bakersfield. Just found the channel a couple days ago and a Bakersfield native myself. You've single handedly inspired me to get into repairable vehicle restorations. I've always wanted a project car, but never once thought to look into wrecked cars.
First thing I'd do is remove all the spark plugs, and then put a boroscope down. You need to see what the pistons look like.
This
Na. Your not fixing it without pulling it out... Why scope it..
engines comin out at this point, thats only gonna help if you want to know what the failure is

It’s 95 fuel
@@jonawilk91 in America is 95 in UK
maybe that plus he doesn't use torque specs if i am not mistaken, so no surprise this happened.
Your father is a gem, I so miss my dad who was an old school panel and body builder here in OZ, he helped build all my rally and race cars, as well as my classic Alfa and BMWs (105 & 2002 and 3 litre CSIs)
So sick to see the car community and YT crews helping each other out. Seeing DDE and Freddy helping a fellow brother in arms out, halfway across the world from home is EPIC
Love this shit haha.
The bits of shrapnel will now be everywhere and probably caused secondary damage in other parts of the engine (hopefully the turbos are ok) …
Pretty sure it’ll need a new engine & coolers etc (but at least you can keep the old one for some spare parts)
Oh man, shattered! Saw on the mk2 channel you got it there 🙌🏽 hope you enjoy Vegas, it’s intense!!
Guess a rebuild is in the mix now though 😉. Also, love how positive you and your dad are!!

I watched a DDE F12 video from 4 days ago where you came and saw Mike & Tim.
I'm so relieved to see the RS6 driving and sounding great, I hope the fix was relatively easy going.
Drag racing was the last thing I was expecting Mat to do 😂.
Pretty stupid move. Should have at least waited til after SEMA.
totally agreed
Just need to say a massive thanks to Freddie for the help and for DDE for letting you use there shop when no-one was there!! Need more DDE & Mat content lol!! ❤😊
I agree I watch dde an Matt's channel all time they are both really good people
18:30 Engine locked up from mechanical blockage.
MA you and your dad and your best mate are unstoppable.
A testament to pushing on and staying positive no matter what .
Your positive drive is infectious to watch .
Cheers boys .

Love the way Both Mat and his Dad keep smiling and positive in the face of adversity exactly why this channel is sooo successful with nearly 2m subs 😱😱
That’s mental being able to use the DDE shop! Awesome video 👍
Mat was like we just broke it
And his dad was like No you broke it😂😂
God I love how both you and your dad are always smiling. Even when the worst of things can happen you guys always manage to keep a cool head and stay possitive. I have so much respect for that, I can olny aspire to be like that!

91 US rated fuel did it … thats around 95 RON … I bet you were tuned for 99+ (aka Shell V Power) 🙈
100% engine have detonate with the wrong fuel.
Ok but stop calling me Ron
Coolant in the oil, could be the PCV has failed and your mixing oil and coolant. We had it in S4. PCV is plastic and in middle of the V, under the supercharger in our car but has been RS6 issue too. Linked to your recall 😞
The car community is definitely just one big family. From Tavarish helping him tow it back to his place DDE letting him use their garage and tools to help out. The RUclips car community is legit. Well you know the RS6 is gonna come out better and stronger now 👍 cant wait to see what you are going to do.
Whit a dad like yours and his laugh when things look really really bad, all worries seem to disappear like snow in the sun. What problem? Yust laugh and tackle the problem. What a guy!

This sucks to see that this has happened matt. I hope you can get it repaired. and you can return home safely.
You blow the engine and your dad cracks jokes. What an absolute legend!
Same happened to me. Stage 2 tuned Audi S3 sent at 172mph and boom. Cylinder 2 bottom through to top. So frustrating. I managed to find another engine for 2.7k and out it in myself
I can’t believe you guys just laugh and get on with sorting things out. I watch this channel because it always makes me smile and I love cars. It takes away stress watching you all having fun regardless! Good luck with the RS I’m sure you will find a solution somehow 🤞🏼
So the engine blew up... however, that trip, with your dad, getting help from freddy and DDE is an adventure to cherish. Cars can be rebuilt, shows can be re-entered. Plus, it would be boring for us if everything went to plan all the time.
Something similar happened to my volkswagen. It was the oil cooler that made my coolant go into my engine oil
It's amazing how you guys handle issues as they pop up. No panic at all!!
Can't wait to see the next video and where you guys would be.
What a great achievement to get it turned around in a short space of time..Shame your having issues but blimey Matt you stay so upbeat even when things go wrong..we are all routing for you and the content is amazing
Big up all crews❤
Well, the RS6 runs with water to air inter-cooler which is located in the intake manifold, I heard that it was some sort of a problem, the inter cooler cracks so the coolant is getting in the engine, definitely have a look on that.
Must be nice when every break down has the silver lining of more content! 🎉
Thats the wonder of RUclips😁
Even though I bet you were gutted to hear you and your dad laughing and joking was brilliant, what an outlook you both have 👍
I'm agreeing with your hydro locked statement indeed.
We broke it........ no you broke it 😂 mat you and your dad's relationship is the best
your dad is the star of the channel, what a guy, you so lucky Mat
So say all us Dads 🤣🤣
Deffo the fuel, but what a way to go. its an Audi RS was bound to throw a rod at some point at least it did it somewhere sunny and not in the flooded wintery hell that is the UK. You'll get it fixed you've got the right outlook and its onwards and upwards!
Could been the fuel difference between US and UK fuel. I think US fuel would make it run lean as UK fuel has higher octane?
This 🔼
Freddy always has your back Mat :D
Freddy has everyone's back, he's such a good and kind hearted guy always willing to help
Good luck mate
carvertical just says " Audi A6 2013" , so its not even a rs6 originally.
This never seems to be boring when watching your channel always some drama but I know you always come through with a plan a big thanks to Freddie for helping Matt out you are a true friend indeed and a big thanks to DDE for helping our boy out
Love how you and your dad's relationship... He's got your back...
It Always a pleasure to see yours videos Matt 🤩
Freddy is a great fella he always holds his hand out to his friends….😇
The tune ye got before ye shipped over is adjusted to the gas ye have in the UK, so if its maxed out just before knock with timing, ye get over to the US, fill up with lower octane gas, well.. Premature detonation, bad knock, a lot of things can happen at once, burn plugs, lift head, blow gasket etc.. Thats my guess..
It’s all good. More content with Freddy, more sun, more power and more wrenching. What’s not to like? ❤
Has to be the fuel! Did Matt put in something like 91 octane in? I’d imagine this tuned RS6 should be on like 99 or have a flex fuel system!?! Hope it gets sorted lads 👍🏾
Was coming to say the same thing.
He put in shell VPower when filling up.
In the UK, VPower is 99Ron. The VPower he put in in the US was 91Ron.
No way that the engine was doing a quarter mile with that in it.
Thinking about how your dad probably never couldt have imagine what places he ended up with you just living his best life and making memorys is just so great to see.
Always rush to see one of your videos mate keep it up mat we love you❤
