He is likely using a kick trigger pedal (like the Roland KT-10). The SPD SX Pro allows for quite a few external triggers to be used, and imo the kick is nearly essential if you have any drumming experience.

Where is the kick drum sound coming from? I see the sticks hitting the hi hat and snare only and yet hear a kick.

Kick can be any sound or combo of sounds
