Thank you so much for watching this episode! Hi, I’ve recently found this channel and have been really enjoying your content (probably about 20hrs plus into it now). I was wondering if you might look at doing an updated “costs of living onboarding” video now that you are in the med with Ruby Rose 2. Our dream is to retire to the Med with a similar Cat and just wondering if we can make it a reality on the budget we’ll have. Is $3000usd/mth still realistic?
IRT the oxalic acid treatment: As a beekeeper, we use oxalic acid as a treatment to treat the bees for a mite infestation. The mite is called verroa destructor and is the #1 malady in all of bee keeping. Very difficult to kill a bug on a bug, but oxalic acid works well when used as advertised. Not sailing related, but thought it was interesting info concerning the multiple uses of oxalic acid. Hope the finnish on your boat was not damaged.
Anchorage looks beautiful. It is great that the rust stains are the only danage to the boat during transit. Can't wait for teh Med adventures to begin.
Good luck with the rust. I know this won't be what you want to read BUT I was sailing a charter boat this summer which had lots of rust marks due to a numpty doing angle grinding onboard in the past: it had been repeatedly treated with oxalic acid but unless you can get rid of the iron itself (which you won't be able to) the rust always comes back.
those "stains" are exactly what you think, if a tiny piece of grinding, welding, or steel wool drops on gelcoat. when it corrodes it eats a tiny hole into the gelcoat, this happend when a friend trried to help me with cleaning the boat with a regular steel wool instead of a stainless steel wool.
Been following your channel for many years and happy to see the boat arrive in good shape. I joined the US Foreign Service in 1982 and my retirement plan-after three assignments and lots of SCUBA, sailing and mountain bike adventures, earthquakes, Mt. Pinatubo, managing a USIA publishing center in the Philippines-was to buy condos in Panama City Beach, FL and St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands and sail my catamaran between them. I only got as far as buying the Florida condo before meeting my soul mate 28 years ago changed those plans and now I just sit on my deck along the Intracoastal Waterway in North Carolina and photograph the boats which pass Beacon 315 south going to Florida and points south in the Fall and back north in the spring before hurricane season, posting them set to music on my dog’s RUclips channel. Continued smooth sailing and hope to see you pass by some if you venture across the pond.
I was SO p*ssed. But we haven't found a replacement yet (I mean, there are mics in Turkiye, but not better than our backup) and now I think we'll just wait to get it repaired over winter, hopefully. I think the audio is still actually pretty good with the 'old' mic?
Cool episode 😎 I am sorry you broke your mike. Have your water issues been solved, or are you still working on it? Thanks for taking us along again. I am pleased to see you starting to enjoy the Mediterranean. 😊😊
Hi - well the three in the overly friendly boat were fellow Aussies, my husband Mick from SV Kirrikie with Chris and Sonia from SV Cut and Run. So pleased to see you had arrived in Marmaris at last 😊. They totally understood you would have had a lot to sort out, so no worries. (I was back in Perth, Oz , so bummed.😅). Really enjoyed your last episode expalining the decision to ship - if you can do it, why not in these troubling times?. Hope the insurance etc has all been sorted now. Fair winds...
Thank you both for your mutual respect and love for each other which is always on full display in your videos. Life is a challenge and sometimes goes sour; but, being with a soulmate and uplifting, unconditional friend makes life worth living. You two rock!!
like i said we had the iron rust problem because a iron ore terminal near largs marina in Scotland and every boat would get covered. took years to get the terminal to use water to damp down when unloading...
Try an iron remover paint spray for car detailing...apparently usually thioglycolic acid??? Try it out, it is made just for the sort of condition you seem to have, though usually in smaller levels of contamination.
IRT the water situation: for some reason when I saw this part of the video, a Saturday Night Live skit instantly popped into my memory recall of Rosana Rosana Dana (Played by comedian Gilder Radner) who would always end her skit with "it just goes to show ya, it's always something, it could be a this, or it could be a that". Anyhow, I guess you have to be an older SNL fan to appreciate that (In the days of John Belushi, Garrett Morris, Dan Akroyd, Chevy Chase etc etc). Thanks for the heart smile! IRT the welding dust, it just happened on another sailing channel as well during a boat transport..... but this one was a bit worse where it actually penetrated the finnish. The insurance covered it.
What a coincidence. I left my dentist office about 2 hours ago. He and I had this very exact conversation. I had said it just goes to show, it's always something. He chimed in with the SNL reference. 🤯
So excited to see you getting through the many tasks needed to get both yourselves and RR2 settled into the Med and ready to do some sailing! I love the sometimes feisty dynamic between the two of you! lol Here's to a great season ahead for all of us. Cheers!
They put a claim in with the shipping company that has agreed in writing to pay for the cleaning of the entire outside of the boat including haul out and underside to be cleaned professionally. They went over that all in the last video.
@@RiverWoods111 My question though was how. I'm assuming it caused pitting in which cleaning won't fill holes in the surface. If it's all just rusted flakes sitting ON the surface that wipe or scrub off then yea a cleaning would fix it.
Shame about the grinder fleck. It can also penetrate glass and plastic hatches so take a real good hard look at all your surfaces. This is one of the reasons we have hot works permits in the UK marine industry and you cant grind or weld in most UK marinas. Hope you get sorted. Sail Safe Guys, Ant & Cid
I used to fit out and commission boats in FL and ship them through Brunswick, GA to Europe [inc. UK, Switzerland, Greece]. Always shrink-wrap before shipping. Crew will always be chipping rust, grinding and painting while they sail. First example went to Southampton docks - customer reported all intact and shiny new. Shrink wrap outside covered in rust and oily grime!
You have probably left Marmaris buy now. If not we did A LOT of refit work there for 10 months. If you need sail, rigging, water maker, fibreglass work we eventually found the best guys
I would examine all you windows very carefully too - the iron oxide issue is very visible on white gel coat, angle grinder hot spark damage to windows are a tad more subtle.
If you have not moved too far yet a few wonderful spots on the Turkish coast are Bozburun, Bozukkale & Knidos. We visited them when chartering a yacht in Turkey a few years ago. Enjoy!
Hi guys, we have been live aboard, mostly in Greece for the last 9 years, be great to see you guys out on the water. We winter in Greece but stay on the hook or town quays, not in marinas. Nick, you can download Navionics charts but you must have a Navionics SD card. I have formatted a Navionics card and re-download the charts.
As far as your Rust issues, my guess would be the ship was somewhere near Iron ore being loaded or unloaded. This dust can carry through the air a fair distance and get onto everything.
That's most likely weld spatter(could be grinder too), they likely welded or cut some thing upwind of your boat, maybe some bespoke brackets for lashing etc for other project cargo which likely got stuck to the finish of your boat on impact due to the heat and the epoxy surface/finish. While the spatter can potentially come off with some rubbing, (any spatter left behind will keep rusting even after your first oxalic acid clean) the surface will have micro indents. The boats finishing likely needs a buffing of sorts to bring back the smooth surface that will help drain seawater/spray etc. Btw Oxalic acid can be corrosive so please check if your finish csn take it. I'd also see if the antifouling is intact. A small micro spot is all sea creatures need.Hope it helps.
You are a brilliant, compelling couple that make it very real for those that are youtube sailors like myself. I enjoy seeing how Nick immediately rationalizes every issue while Teresa sincerely laughs and chuckles at every challenge. She brings priceless positivity to every situation. @@NJ-Cathie A teaspoon of Oxalic Acid mixed with water in a spray bottle will erase the rust spots like magic without harming the gelcoat. No scrubbing required. Just spray, wait and rinse.
after this episode was filmed, we took the boat up to Seawind Europe near Izmir and the yard cleaned it really well (costs covered by the shipping company) but it's still not perfect. Plenty of rust leftover. Over winter the boat will be hauled again for storage and more maintenance, and the rust stains will hopefully be completely cleaned.
