I was getting so mad at the media outlets focusing only on this song as what she's most remembered for, because there's just so much more. So generic of the media of course.
But in this case, to see him sit quietly for a moment with the news, and do his best in the very moment he himself is trying to process what he's hearing, and share such an intimate moment with his crowd just had me.

@@lorna2127 Very. I think, when you're in the circuit of artists and you reach my age (and his even) and so many ex promising talents are long since acclaimed for their work, you've also seen an unproportionate number of friends, aquaintances, colleagues with a difficult diagnosis or two, with or without an addiction to I manage, take its toll and ending up too isolated when it mattered, misunderstood by many or dead bc it's really hard to cope with awful pasts, immediate ongoing challenges, the contrast of internal dialogue, personal relationships, fame and relentless press.
It's a very difficult world to live in for sensitive people, and too many talented ones can't cope bc artistic talent and sensitivity/vulnerability often coincide. With Sinéad it was as it often is, her percieved strength also worked against her in some ways. And she struggled with not giving in or up many times. I think although mental health is more highlighted and discussed these days amongst the younher generation, she's a shining example of how difficult it is at times, to manage juggling these things. She was very respected, also mocked, was successful in some ways, faced with impossible loss abd chalkenged in others, a strong voice, with a deep dark foundation with an arresting presence and uncompromising nature that made her on the one hand loved, on the other extremely unstable in her aloneness at times. And it's actually quite random circumstances that get people through the really rough moments. If you've been around the block a while, you know it could happen to almost anyone if they're unlucky. It cones as a shock, but it's also understandable and even foreseeable, just a matter of when, sometimes. For someone like Damien Rice who's personal relationship to Sinéad I don't know about, the nees of her death is going to be deeply moving regardless.
It's admirable what he wuite spontaneaously choses to do here.
His improvised performance of her hit song that made her an international star overnight with the poignant lyrics he's forgotten but knows in his heart, the way he shares getting through them with the help of the audience, it's all very fitting and moving to the tragig news of her death.
She's at peace now, and not lonely and doesn't have to battle inner or outer demons anymore. RIP Sinéad O'Connor. ❤️

He finds out about her passing and seconds later he is trying to figure the chords out on his guitar when he probably hasn't heard the song in years. I think this would have made her smile. I still cannot believe that she is gone. She was such a huge part of my life growing up. So much so that I dug out my Sinead t-shirts from high school some 30 years ago and have been wearing them. You can tell the number of people she touched simply by the many beautiful comments I have received while wearing them.
I met her once around 1994 and had almost no words. She was wonderfully kind and signed a folded up Rolling Stone magazine cover I had been carrying around on the slight chance I could meet her at a show that I was working. I will never forget that day.

Thank you for saying EVERYTHING I'm thinking and feeling. I've been talking to friends about it. This one hit hard because I struggle with mental health and no one came to her aid. I was only 12 when I watched "the" SNL episode. I didn't quite yet understand why she did it, but I knew it was a BIG DEAL. And sure as shit, she was right. But did anyone revisit that moment to acknowledge it? No. When she went online to share she'd been in hospital and when she was on Dr. Phil, I so badly wished I could sit with her. Not as a celebrity, but as a human, as a fellow abused child.
You are so lucky to have met her. I'm sure this is so hard for you too. We don't know each other, but I am also full on ugly crying at this.
I was mad the media outlets were only generically connecting her to this song, but why would we expect more from the media? But in this scenario (and Pink covering it with Brandi Carlisle, I accepted because Pink covered it a number of times before her passing-as well, sidenote, Chris Cornell did an incredible acoustic cover) this scenario was just so different. Watching him sit in disbelief with the news and trying to play while processing and the crowd, all as one taking in the news and helping him along was not a video I expected to see today.
We don't know each other, but I can tell her loss is hitting you hard, as it is me. I'm here for you, human to human. If you'd like to chat, reach out and I'll share my contact info. ❤ Love and light to you.
RIP Sinead. We are so sorry.

Why would you scream a song request at someone who is visibly shaken by this sad news?? People are so disappointing sometimes.
*****Edit: I am actually the guy who is shouting "ESKIMO" at the top of my lungs at the beginning of this video. I am Spanish but my ear and tongue for English is very good. I knew that I should not be asking for a song of Damien at that particular moment, but I could not help myself, and my excitement got the better of me.
I made my original comment here because of the initial shame that I felt after reflecting upon my behaviour at this concert. I needed to know if what I had done was forgivable, or not.... It seems that I need to further reflect on what I have done.
For those of you who have said that I have no right to comment on Damien's reaction, and that I shouldn't have said that he was "visibly shaken", I can attest that the singer's sadness was palpable at this moment. He was clearly upset and taken aback by the sudden and sad news of Sinéad's passing. I am not sure how many people did notice, but with my own eyes, I saw a single tear fall from Damien's right eye during this performance; reminiscent of Sinéads tear in the NOTHING COMPARES 2 U video.
This makes my behaviour all the worse... I am so ashamed.

The great thing here is that someone with the reputation of Rice dosen't hesitate to risk the perfection of the performance, playing a song he hardly knows. Yes, it's not "well played" or "well sung" as he usually does. And it's just beautiful, it's pure truth, a true tribute with his fellow music lovers. He's got the rest of the show to be a star and play and sing perfectly.
