There was always the possibility that even CF never expected the Knott's giga to be built. They always ight've wanted a mini hyper, but at first proposed a giga so that they could "listen to concerns" and then propose the coaster they always wanted as a more moderate option.

It’s like negotiating with a kid about eating their vegetables. You want them to eat as much as possible, but you know they’re not eating them all. So you say “6 more bites and then dessert.” They say “no, 1 bite!” And this goes back and forth until you settle on one bite but you at least get them to eat something. In this case, Knott’s wanted 347 bites, and may be settling on 182. Still great! If we get a 182’ B&M hyper at this park it could be the best ride there, and have a much better throughput than 400 riders per hour unlike certain other headliners.

Makes me wonder if the whole Giga option was just Cedar Fair's highball offer in a development dispute with the city. Essentially, they wanted a B&M hyper, but started with a giga so the "compromise" with the city is a hyper.
This would better explain the original plans that theoretically could have worked, but would have been astronomically expensive (at least 50M+). CF didn't care about the expense, as they really were not going forward with a Giga. So sure, throw in that parking garage.

Very good point. I still wouldn't personally bother with a hyper -style at unde 200ft and tradition layout though, virtually non marketable at that point. They can find someway to market it. Silver Bullet didn't need any record breaking stats to be built. This would be both an airtime machine and capacity machine (one actually reliable). Things Knotts really, really needs.
If it does turn into a mini-hyper instead of a hyper, I could definitely see them investing in heavy theming to make up for it marketing wise. Think Shed 2.0.
That said, I wouldn't fully rule out going after some of Goliath's records.

Knott's is my home park, and my favorite thing about it is it's innate creativity, and their seemingly dogged determination to preserve that. Not one ride feels similar to the next, and they even manage to make them stand apart from their blood-brethren in other parks. The giga sounded exciting, but honestly, it always felt *way* out of Knott's league, which I think is for the best. Knott's thrives in making creative use of its space and location (I feel like some people forget SFMM is practically just up the road), and plopping down a giga awkwardly offset to one side of the park kinda just felt... wrong, and desperate even.
I really like the idea of something smaller heading to the park. Again, Knott's is super creative, and they always succeed in allowing their attractions to tell just as much a story as the surroundings they find themselves in... I just can't imagine they would be able to pull a giga off while remaining true to their character and that mission. Going back to my thought on SFMM above, there's a reason I go to SFMM over Knott's, and vice-versa. I just don't expect the AAA thrills that SFMM provides at Knott's, and I don't expect the charming thematic atmospheres and storytelling that Knott's provides at SFMM.
I think a mini hyper feels *a lot* more "Knott's", even though I do hope they don't work with B&M for this one. Again, I think this is a great opportunity to flex their creative muscles and do something a bit weirder and more endearing. There's a lot they could do with that brief off-site portion that excites me, even more than I think they'd be able to handle with all that borrowed parking-lot space planned for the giga. I am a little worried for the skyline, as it really sounds like it's gonna busy-up the view of Ghostrider, which, judging from the outlines here, would kinda be smothered from most of the major angles (entrance, Main Street, even the parking lot before you cross under Beach Blvd). One thing that might alleviate that (or exacerbate it) is the opening up of that area just outside the exit of Ghostrider, which really *really* feels like a total dead end. The exciting thing is that it would eliminate that awkward horseshoe (hehe) you take around Spurs and Ghost Town Grill to get to Wild Water Wilderness, allowing that area to grow some more life and to offer more of an inviting route to the Schoolhouse, Bird Cage Theater, and Calico River Rapids. This would also leave way to more sightlines of Ghostrider and it's lift and first drop from within the park. The potentially worrying thing is the station for the mini hyper completely commanding this area and that potential sightline, which, knowing Knott's, I doubt they would do to a monstrous degree, but is something that's definitely in the back of my mind.
    Honestly this is much more exciting than the news about the giga to me. I think this smaller scale is for the best and will end up working in Knott's favor, and even in that of its surrounding communities. :+}

You are correct, it is not always easy to overcome zoning limitations and neighbor concerns - however, as an urban planner of 33+ years, I can say that it is not impossible in many cases, and that there are ways to soften the blow of these projects with either physical or financial considerations. This could be an annoyance to neighbors, but it would not be as bad as many others types of projects in the perception of the neighbors. Low income housing, a new freeway, some other projects that might exercise eminent domain over some portion of the neighborhood - those would all cause a political explosion.
Further, the timeframe for the KBFgigacoaster is 5 years from May 2022 (per ACE rep with whom I spoke). We don't yet know the timeframe CF has for this new minihyper proposal, and I think to assume it would be only a one-year project is very optimistic. I also think that this new plan does not obviate the possibility of the earlier one. It may be a trial balloon to prove a point, albeit an expensive one. Anything is possible, up to and including the purchase of more land, which admittedly would be a real financial kick in the teeth.

Up until about 10 years ago, we had free reign to include ample parking and level of service improvements to impacted roadways from virtually all projects. Cars were seen as a necessity and a right. As planners, we were not always happy with this situation - many people, including pedestrians and cyclists, suffer from car culture. However, more recent legislation, partly in response to climate change and partly to social justice issues, have given planners more tools to use to de-emphasize auto access in favor of walkers and cyclists and easier access to local amenities. Parking requirements are greatly reduced, and in terms of environmental impact analysis, vehicle miles travelled are now the standard of analysis instead of roadway function. We have also seen sound blockers on Silver Star at Europa Park. I don’t know if this would work, but what if “Berry 347” had BOTH it’s rails and spine filled with sand, along with sound blockers on the lift and some soundproof walls lower to the ground like what they have next to highways? Hi! Love your videos. So, I've had the chance to speak with a local ACE rep from the SF Bay Area (in April), and he gave me some details about timing for megacoasters in CA. The CGA hyper is still very much on the books, and he says their schedule for this hyper is 2026 opening (50th anniversary). For the Knott's Giga, he said that the schedule Cedar Fair has would be 2027. He did not say why the KBF giga is skedded for those dates a half decade away, other than it was a combination of finances and providing time for Knotts to work out the issues with the City of Buena Park. The upshot is that nothing is certain yet for KBF, but also that multiple projects at either CGA or KBF are possible in the next few years. I would not count out any of these projects, nor would I assume that any will get built on any particular timeframe. Despite the noise issues adjacent to KBF, as a former urban planner I can see some solutions to allow the neighbors to either reach a compromise with KBF or be bought out.
Anyway - thanks for these great videos.

Yeah, had a feeling it was gonna get cancelled. There was no way Knott’s would be getting a coaster over 300 feet. I mean, a 175-foot hyper coaster would be good. Sure it wouldn’t be 200 feet tall, but the drop can, simply by digging into the earth.
Knott’s can still get a hyper with a similar statistic seen on Apollo’s Chariot at Busch Gardens Williamsburg or Phantom’s Revenge at Kennywood, with the drop being bigger than the coaster’s height.
I think a Giga coaster could work for California’s Great America though. There are plans for them to get a Hyper but I think they might go straight for the 300-foot mark rather than just the 200-foot one. Curious how much more B&M would have had to spend on a giga to handle a major earthquake. Steel Dragon 2000 is the only large giga (not counting Red Force at Ferrari Land) built near fault lines, so can see why Knotts would want to scale back to something more like Hollywood Dream.

    • @eriklakeland3857

Japan is susceptible to far stronger earthquakes. A Richter scale rating of 7.3 is the most in California history, while the 2011 earthquake in Japan was a cataclysmic 9.0. Keep in mind the richter scale is logarithmic, so an 8.0 is 10 times weaker than a 9.0

    • @effiodiego
      @effiodiego 2 года назад +4

@@eriklakeland3857 Well the strongest known earthquake is actually estimated to be a 7.9, the 1906 San Francisco comes to mind. California also has the issue of having earthquakes that occur on land (as opposed to Japan's earthquakes based on the ocean), causing for shorter bursts of very strong shaking. Even small tremors can cause significant damage if close enough to the epicenter.
Japan is just incredibly overly-cautious, as that's how their culture is in general. It's why you see things like neatly packaged frozen meals that look like restaurant quality; meanwhile in the US we're completely fine with eating some weird brown microwaved slop advertised as a hamburger.
Nonetheless, coasters will be fine, as California does have some strict laws for earthquake readiness, but nothing too insane.,

Knott’s is my home park so definitely a few thoughts here…
Pros: This attraction will still be a capacity machine, as long as Knott’s consistently runs 2-3 train ops. Knott’s is landlocked so the layout has to be creative and this will add more floater airtime to Knott’s other than some spots on Ghostrider. Since lines at Knott’s have gotten so long recently, this can up crowds but alleviate afternoon/evening queues for attractions like Ghostrider, Silver Bullet and Hangtime.
Cons: *sigh* no giga. Also, not sure about how I feel about the queue/station being so close to Ghostrider when that attraction can clog up that part of the park. At least with the giga, there was more separation between the two stations. Also, the track going over Ghostrider’s track leaving the station might mean a removal of trees by that turnaround into the lift which would be a bummer. Also, the plans to build under Beach Blvd will still have lots of difficulty getting approved.
My guess is that this pivot is as a result of fears of noise as well as budget constraints (e.g. building the parking garage due to giga project). Will be interesting to see how this develops

And for certain events like Haunt and Christmas the walkway is extended and has even more going on. Super bad idea to put yet another thing in that particular spot. Should be more backstage with an additional walkway looping around to near Big Foot Rapids. All that stuff being on a dead end doesn’t work. Plus, people have to remember that walkway was originally outside the park. It was never designed to handle the crowds from one major coaster let alone two PLUS Haunt mazes.

If they can't get a hyper let alone a giga, I think the best course of action would be to forgo B&M on this project and go with Chance Rides instead. We've seen how much punch Chance can get out of a mere 100 foot coaster (Lightning Run) think of how much better a ride could be by them with this much height. I know this is not likely since they haven't worked with Chance in recent years but given how much more forceful Lightning Run is compared to most B&M hypers, I think this height is Chance's sweet spot more than B&M. Plus it would be nice to have a little more variety within cedar Fair than to have the same segment of rides made by the same companies every time.

  • @sitebproductions
    @sitebproductions 2 года назад +5

I dont see how this would help the park anywhere near as much. A) This would not expand the footprint of Knotts, no new walkways, and it doesn't even utilize the area past Ghostriders gate which is basically open almost half the year now anyways because its so packed. I've had a knotts pass for 18 years now and post covid the park is as busy as its ever been. Knotts needs some more breathing room.
    B) Its ugly, this is not new knotts, this is old (2000-2012) knotts, ruins ghost town way more than the giga plans. The giga coaster you wouldn't even see from ghost town main street, other places the coaster is just backdrop portrait . It doesn't go over any of ghost town.Taking out the bakery, taking away all those seats and on top of that having giant coaster track going both ways over what I think is one of the nicest paths in the park. All those trees and the fountain, its a nice place. Now you'll have coaster track going both ways. Over the ghostrider pre lift and queue too. Way more intrusive to the park (Not neighbors) than the giga plans
    C) Its simply not quite what the park needs coaster wise (if its not 244ft and 165). Knotts doesnt need a another good mid-tier thrill coaster. It needs a stand out steel coaster, a show stopper, a Magic Mountain Killer. Thats the only thrill ride knotts needs left. After that they have enough and can just focus on families again for 10 year add a new dark ride, redo jaguar.
I'm ok with a decent sized hyped coaster not a giga but its gotta have the right integration in the park and be bigger than Goliath still.

I agree with almost everything, except for the park needing a "magic mountain killer". Knott's has found its niche and is thriving in it. It's not competing with Magic Mountain on the basis of coaster collection, it's competing (and winning, imo) on the basis of the overall visiting experience.
That being said, the park DOES need a capacity machine. The attendance numbers keep going up and the queues are getting insane nowadays. Having 3/4 of its major coasters hovering at 400-500 riders per hour is unacceptable.

This would be such an eyesore tbh. One thing I liked a lot about the giga plans was that the ride had its own space. It wasn't sitting on top of a bunch of other stuff like Silver Bullet. It could technically be a Ghost Town ride, but it left Ghost Town alone.
Also, RIP to thar corner of the park during Scary Farm. The four backlot mazes plus now TWO major coasters? The midway over there is small and that foot traffic would be awful.

Everyone was so adamant that it would be a Giga in the south parking lot, but I always said that it would be a terrible location for a coaster and that it would most likely be a Hyper instead. Every single time I saw one of these videos, I always pointed out that it makes a lot more sense to try to put it in the front parking lot on the east side because over there, you would not get the noise complaint. On that side, Knott's is surrounded by its own stuff and then just businesses. There's no residential stuff close to that area so it wouldn't be a big deal. Yet, so many people were so sure. Plus, it was pretty obvious it couldn't be a Giga. Knott's just isn't the park for it. Now, does it suck that it will be a mini Hyper instead of a true Hyper? Yes, absolutely. However, I can't say that I didn't see these downgrades coming as the more reasonable solution.

I hope that Cedar Fair is playing games With us and the city. The first coaster was ambitious but the layout was in a very unlikely location. It’s almost like they maximized the threat of visual and noise pollution to neighbors. On the contrary this proposal would require a lot of collaboration with the city going under public land in the roadway. So it actually just normalizes that process but I don’t think that the coaster itself is ambitious enough to warrant all of that collaboration and effort. I think the best solution would be a giant giga coaster that is in a far better location away from houses in the Northeast parking lot that also goes under grand Avenue. Best of both worlds. They could also have the station where the knots employment center is and extend the Midway near ghost rider further south. The park is going to need more open land for crowd comfort. The lift could go northeast over ghostrider away from neighborhing houses and drop in generally the same area as this proposal, but heading northeast instead of straight east.

My whole problem with the supposed Giga in the first place was that it was going to be to close to residential AND the Hotel itself...yeah , guests would have LOVED to have trains of screaming people fly past them at 10-11pm lol

Matt Ouimet, Disneylands ex park president and current Cedar Fair board member has stated for over a decade about how much potential Knotts has always had.
Pre Pandemic they were at 4.2 million guest per year, highest in cedar fair, impressive given its size in comparison to EVERY other park in any company. Knott's is EASILY the smallest to achieve that accomplishment.
I believe that's why Knotts got the most capital investment this year within Cedar Fair (seemingly)...
    300+ room Hotel refurb
Renovating a whole land in Fiesta Village
    MonteZOOMa refurb
Like I was saying Matt Ouimet always saw potential in Knott’s, Disneyland has just priced families out, and now you have this large audience that's looking for quality family fun.
Its time to strike while the opportunity is there. Knotts has been SLOWLY refurbing old rides & improving infrastructure over the past 10+ years now, dating back to 2012-2013 with the Log Ride Refurb.
10 years before that they went on a coaster/ride buying spree filling in gaps in their lineup.
The next few years I see them finally finishing up with addressing parking and finally adding an elite/premiere, world class ride with a much needed incredible capacity, B&M.
They took the slow route properly positioning themselves for a project of this magnitude, while also preparing the park to better handle 4 million + guest per year, and preserving the parks aging iconic rides.
It will have been 30 years in 2027 since Cedar Fair bought Knotts in December of 1997, it's been one hell of a 30 year plan, not to mention a water park as well.
As Knotts & Cedar Fair closes out 30 years of improvements over the next 5 years, after nearly ALL 4 areas of the park & hotel has been refurbed and enhanced, it'll be EXTREMELY interesting to see what they have in store for the final few projects.
I still say giga-coaster, as they are now in prime position to support that project as nothing else in the park has been neglected and unaddressed besides the main entrance & parking. Remember they passed up on gatekeeper & leviathan back in 2009 - 2011, to instead focus on refurbing its aging rides & infrastructure.
What else is left besides repurposing & consolidating backstage areas, which coincidentally, that giga-coaster project had plans for, as well as a needed parking structure.
    It'll be interesting, for sure.

It’s incredible how much wasted space Knott’s has.
For example, they own a piece of land the size and shape of Disneyland’s Mickey And Friends parking structure across Western from Knott’s Bear-y Tales and they’re only using a small part of it for a flat employee lot.

Sure, a loud coaster that runs every 2 minutes until 9PM is too much, but let's keep building roads everywhere that create constant noise and danger all through the night... The hypocrisy is unreal.

By the sounds of it this will be quite like Hollywood Dream the Ride. Which might be one of B&Ms most underwhelming rides stat wise. But it being so close to the main street of Universal Studios Osaka adds a lot. And this will also have some good interactions with the surroundings. The night ride there is amazing especially on the backwards train. So maybe they'll add that here too.

If noise was such a issue all they would have to do is sand fill the tracks. I think they should scrap this who builds hypers at 165 feet anymore

I think my only disappointment about this announcement is that the Coaster is not at least taller than Xcelerator to be dubbed the tallest in the park, but otherwise I am still excited!

This makes me think cost is a big part of it, too. Not renovating the south end of the park, the ride is almost half the size of the previous one.

The turnaround goes directly past a church, they're definitely gonna get noise complaints from that. Just based off of going under a major road, I think these are sure to be changed in some way shape or form.

I wonder if Knott’s would be interested in their own Single Rail coaster, like Wonder Women or Railblazer? Seems like a small enough coaster for them to theme and not be too much of an eye sore lol.

Capacity is the issue. Knott's has too many coasters with bad capacity and it's slammed with crowds and long lines. A people eater like a B&M hyper will fit very well.

I think an Intamin multi launch would be the dream for this layout. I could also see a custom RMC Raptor if Magic Mountain wasn't about to get their own Raptor.
Here's my main hope. Knotts is more of a theme park than the other Cedar Fair parks. If there was going to be a compromise in size I'd love to see it made up for in theming. Knotts would really benefit from a highly themed coaster. Maybe split the difference between Verbolten and Hagrid in terms of thematic elements (though both were reportedly very expensive.) I'd definitely be on board with that, even over a giga.

      1. Cedar Fair doesn't work with Intamin.
      2. Universal had the IP to work with and BGW had the terrain. Knott's has neither.

Having Knott’s as my home park, this is a little disappointing, but like I said in my video, anything with floater airtime is needed desperately in the west coast. If this is only camelbacks, I wouldn’t complain one bit. It does appear to be a downgrade from the giga though, but it is what it is and I’m glad the west could be getting anything like this.

  • @naylindavies

since this is less than half the size of the giga it for sure will cost alot less, it would be nice for them to use some of that giga money to make a fun ride with immersive theming, maybe even onboard audio too

I feel like knotts is just trying to add a capacity machine & a B&M hyper is kinda the easiest way you can do that.
