  • The NTSB is investigating what caused a cargo ship to slam into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, early Tuesday morning, killing six construction workers who were on the bridge at the time. Two bodies have been recovered as of Thursday morning, while four others are presumed dead, according to state officials. Mike Singer set up the camera that captured the now-viral video of the bridge collapsing.

I just do not understand why, after the sunshine bridge in Florida was toppled in 1980, that shipping through any port with stick bridges allows ships of this size use the port. They had 45 years to shore up the structure but did nothing. It takes death and destruction for any of these assholes to get off their collective asses and prepare for calamity like this.

All other traffic was halted. What may appear to be a semi might have been a portable trailer used by the construction company. My dad worked as a bridge construction superintendent for over 40 years. I can remember being a little kid and putting on my little hard hat when he would take me to visit his job sites. They often had portable trailers on the bridges they used as offices. It probably would look like a semi truck from a distance.

Have you never learned Newton's second law? It states that force equals mass times acceleration, aka F = ma. Solving for acceleration, we get that F/m = a, so, if the mass is very high, then we need a very strong force in order to accelerate or decelerate something. These container ships typically have around 100000 metric tons of mass, which means that you need at least 100000000 newtons of force just decelerate the ship by 1 m/s²

Why didn't the cargo ship have a tugboat escort? A tugboat can divert the movement of even a large cargo ship that is without power and drifting. In many harbors it is common practice for tugboats to escort ships until they are completely clear of areas where they could accidentally hit a structure, like for instance a bridge support.
With the primary supports of the Francis Scott Key Bridge so near the ship channel, not having a tugboat escort or tugboats in the immediate area of the bridge whenever a ship would enter or exit the harbor in my opinion constituted extreme negligence. This demands a thorough investigation.

      4) Why are there crucial time gaps in the ship's black box data recorder?

I live in Maryland, my dad worked for 40 years as a bridge construction superintendent, and I also passed my OUPV Coast Guard Captain’s class so I am familiar with our rules and laws regarding commercial boats and ships in the Chesapeake and surrounding area. We don’t use tugboats to take ships into and out of the port of Baltimore. Rather, each ship is escorted/operated by a Bay Pilot. The Bay Pilot is responsible for boarding the ship once it enters the Chesapeake Bay, navigating and bringing the ship up the bay and to the port of Baltimore, and then returning to the mouth of the bay where the Bay Pilot returns duties to the ship’s captain. It appeared that this ship lost power shortly after leaving the port of Baltimore. With no power; there is nothing a Captain or pilot can do. They issued the Mayday and thankfully local police were able to halt traffic. However, it is devastating that the construction crew, who were in their vehicles on a break, could not be notified in time.

Thank you for that information. In reading about the bridge collapse I had come across parts of it, but was not aware of the entire procedure for guiding ships into and out of the harbor. If, as you state, there is nothing that either the Captain or Bay Pilot can do if the ship loses power it would seem to me only reasonable and prudent for there to be a backup system of protection from a ship, particularly a massive one like a container carrier, that begins drifting aimlessly and in danger of ramming into a fixed structure or another ship.
The fact that the primary supports for the Francis Scott Key Bridge were relatively close to the harbor's main ship channel and were not of the more advanced design capable of withstanding substantial impact, it does not seem at all overly cautious to have tugboats in the waters near the bridge whenever a large ship is entering or exiting the harbor to safely direct its movement should it lose power and start drifting. In fact, failing to provide such backup protection looks in hindsight to be disastrous negligence.

If I am correctly understanding what is said in this video, Mike Singer, the person who set up the camera is a ship/boat watcher who is interested in watching ships at work.
Because there was not a boatwatcher webcam set up at Baltimore Harbour, he asked for and received permission to set one up.
He had the webcam set up on the house of a friend who lives about 2 miles from the bridge, angled in such a manner as to catch the activity of the ships there, as well as the beauty of the bridge, which is a major landmark, silhouetted against the harbour.
Be thankful for that, for this clip will be an immense help to those investigating the collision.

I can't believe that no one is going to be charged with this R.I.P 💔 🥀 🕊️ to those who lost their life. I don't believe that we the Americans who pay taxes are going to pay for the rebuild of this bridge. This Administration has got to be the worst in our life time they say that the captain has been there many times so I don't understand why he hit the pilon holding it up. So many things have happened under the idiot in the White House we can't forget the train accidents just everything.
