It is official! Season 3 for Bridgerton has finally come to a curious conclusion. There were twists, there were turns, and there were a few surprises in store for our avid book lovers.
But the question is, dear reader, did the showrunners set themselves up for success or failure? Is there any hope for Bridgerton, or are we in for another rollercoaster ride Season 4?
And most importantly, is Lady Whistledown gone for good?
    Let’s find out!

What I didn’t like about the Francesca story line is that they make us believe that love doesn’t need to be a lightning from the sky and can be calm and comfortable but then as soon as she sees Michaela she feels that panic and lighting and realises that is what true love is…so basically love has to be dramatic or else it is not love…that’s what made me angry more than gender flipping Michael..and I agree to with u to justify gossip and backbiting just for the sake of making the protagonist look right without her facing any proper consequences for her action gives a wrong message…also I felt angry a colin bcoz he was angry with her not for writing about him,Eloise and marina but for the fact that he is a jealous, insecure man child …u can’t be anger with anyone just because u are envious, envy does not justify ur anger towards anyone …deal with ur own internal issues first..

with Michael in the book was a slow thing for her. She only thought of him as a friend till about five years past John's death.

And it could have so easily been fixed! Just have Michaela be the one to come over stuttering and starry-eyed, and Francesca have no reaction! That way it still alludes to the future love story without discrediting Francesca's relationship with John- even shows us a little of Michaela's personality, that she does fall in love like Violet does whilst Francesca doesn't, and that's fine because everyone is different.

I was disappointed they didn't do anything with Edwina and the prince, but they did make it clear that, no, that didn't happen. Edwina "made a brilliant match abroad" would never be how the Queen talks about her nephew's marriage. She would say Edwina and Frederich married or something. (She doesn't say that Edwina is with the prince. She married someone in India, apparently.)

Season 3 as a whole was a mess, but part 2 managed to cap it all off. I really disliked the second part and I'm not sure if I want to continue watching. Especially since we no longer can be sure to get a Sophie but rather a "Sophus" I'm afraid. The show is Bridgerton only by name, in my eyes it's a wattpad fanfiction of the books and nothing more.
Also, there is a time and place for natural and authentic inclusivity and diversity. Bridgerton is not.
You make a really good point when mentioning that the showrunners wrote themselves into a corner with Eloises and Colins hate for LW. But that happens when you deviate so much from the original but in the end somehow try to come back to how the original plot goes.
I'm afraid they will butcher Eloise's story. People desperately want her to be queer or remain unmarried and childfree by choice, but then the inclusion of Marina Thompson in season 1 and 2 wouldn't have made any sense (and I hated her plotline so much 😩). I can only accept Marina's addition in the previous season's if they keep close to book 5. Otherwise... I don't know, I guess I can't be any more disappointed as I am already.
Regarding Anthony and Kate travelling to India: no. Just no. Anthony is overprotective and caring, also he takes his duties very seriously. Anthony would never take his pregnant wife to travel with her to India for months! Never. So much can happen on this journey, he's expecting a male heir, he has to care for his mother and unmarried siblings, he simply wouldn't abadon his duties for a "nice little voyage". Just no. It was a cheap way to write the actors out of the show, at the cost of Anthonys character.
I have so so so many issues with this season (Polin in general (and especially their cringe sex scene 😢 it was my favourite in the books and I wasn't even able to look at the screen, it made me *this* uncomfortable), the genderbend debacle, the huge letdown after the wedding kiss between Fran and John, the costumes, the make up, the edits and cuts, the camera angles, etc), I could write a book about it.

I won't be watching any more seasons. The writing for season 3 was so bad, we spent so much time on uninteresting characters and plotlines that went nowhere. In plussing up Colin to be a leading man, the writers made him so smug, callow, and unappealing. They completely wasted all the potential of Benedict that they had built up over the first two seasons. Lord Debling literally disappeared! The gender swap on Francesca's storyline was really gratuitous and kind of ruins her 'quiet love is equally valid love' story. Even the costumes were ridiculous and cheap-looking much of the time. A handful of good scenes here and there (eg, Portia Featherington dealing with her daughters) is not enough to keep me coming back.

    • @awsome182
      @awsome182 2 месяца назад +18

@@lisagregory4569 they really did us and the entire Bridgerton (book) fanbase dirty.
I hated that they made Colin so petty after he found out that Pen was LW, accusing her of trapping him into a marriage, when that was never the case in the book. Also the entire angst-shtick of him being angry at Pen, then forgiving her, then being angry again, then forgiving her again... It was so annoying.
I also hated Queen Charlotte in this season. When she crashed the wedding of Polin, I was literally gasping. In three seasons, we didn't have one happy wedding scene so far. All were awkward or at least ended awkwardly.
I also didn't like the way they portrayed Pen. I mean, in the book she's already 28 and considered a spinster. She's actually accepted her fate and is at peace with it, which makes her easier and more confident around people. One reason why Colin finally notices her, because she finally is her true self and not some shy, anxious mess. But in this season, Pen came across even more awkward, desperate, clumsy and anxious. This entire courting plot was ridiculous and maybe she had her visual glow up, but she barely showed any confidence or acceptance of her true self. She even tried to lie to Lord Deblin to gain his attention. And that Colin tried to help her to court was basically copy-pasted from season 1 with Daphne and Simon.
Apropos Lord Deblin, good that you mentioned it - where did he go? He simply disappeared without any explanation. One second Pen and Cressida were fighting over him, the next moment it appears that he never existed. Even Cressida no longer mentions him.
Regarding the sideplots... I've never been a fan of the added sideplots in this show, but it got even worse in this season. Can anyone please finally write off the Mondrichs? Their story is so boring and doesn't contribute anything to the show. If they wanted to show the life of working class people in Regency England, they could have done so with Sophie.
And the weird thing between Lady D and her brother... Are you going to tell me that she was holding a grudge against her brother for 40+ years because of what he did when he was ten years old?!?! And all this hostility between them, only for it to be solved within a few sentences.
They really lost me on Benedict's arc. This threesome was plotwise and technically abysmal. Technically in the sense of how it was edited. 30 seconds threesome - cut - serious scene - cut - 30 seconds threesome - cut - some other unrelated scene - cut - 30 seconds threesome - cut - ... Very bad filmmaking.
And is no one going to mention that Lady Tilly basically manipulated Benedict into that threesome? The way she talked to him and convinced him was pretty much reverse-conversion-therapy. "You won't know if you'll like it until you try it out" is exactly someone would say if they tried to convince a queer person to try heterosexual relationships. Disgusting.
And don't get me started on the genderbend of Michael to Michaela. I hated it. Even though I enjoyed Fran and John in this show, I felt like it took away way too much screen time from Pen and Colin, and also left me confused that Fran gets half a season now and presumably another season later? So is she getting 1.5 seasons? I mean, her courting and marriage to John happen off screen in the books, so I understand that they wanted to add a bit to it in the show, but they did so at the cost of Polin.
That being said, I liked Fran and John and was really disappointed that Fran, after her speech to her mother that not all loves and relationships are passionate and dramatic, but sometimes quiet and tender, felt underwhelmed by her kiss with John. Hinting that obviously there is something missing and that she doesn't feel the spark. Only to introduce Michaela..... And make Fran lust over her. Apart from the obvious (I don't want the main couples to be changed, I want a faithful book adaptation, which means that the Bridgerton siblings are not queer), it was absolutely not the way it was in the book. It's Michael who falls instantly in love with Fran and it's Fran who has to learn to love again and to love him many years after John's passing.
As I said, I don't want any of the Bridgertons to be queer (they could introduce Lord Halesby from book 8 much sooner and explore him as a canonical queer book character, I'd love to watch that) but if they desperately need to make at least one if the Bridgertons queer, Fran's story is the one that's the least fitting. Her entire book and the explored tropes require a heterosexual relationship. I hate it that Jess Brownell felt the need to insert herself into the story and turn Fran into herself. Pathetic.

@@awsome182 I agree with everything you said. I'm tired of people telling me the show and the books are two separate things, no, they aren't. The books are the only reason the show exists. If they had changed the finale of Harry Potter, Divergent, Hunger Games, people would have been pissed, rightfully so. If you take a book and turn it into a show or movie, the main points, and the finale has to follow the book. Otherwise use the books to write something original, and don't call it Bridgerton. I understand the the show isn't following history completely, but changing the race of the characters doesn't change the story, changing the sex of one of the main characters does. As viewers we can accept some changes for the sake of entertainment, but all those things they did in this season go way behion that. To be Jess Brownell wrote a fan fiction about Francesca and decided to use this opportunity to make her story real, otherwise it makes no sense, also the excuse she gave like Francesca is introvert, but to her her shiness her being quiet makes her queer.

Very tactful analysis. In the future (if there are any seasons beyond 4), Bridgerton needs to do two things, in my opinion:
    1) Get the former showrunner or a brand new one entirely.
    2) Find harmony between romance and drama. I really thought they would master it with Season 3 since friends to lovers is so easy to build on, but they fumbled atrociously.
They need to realize that it's not enjoyable to the audience to see the couple on the outs until the very last episode. For at least one season, they need to let the romance build without hating each other or having a blowout.
Also, if they're going to do an ensemble cast with so many characters, either extend the episodes to do their storylines justice or reel it in. They can't keep yoyoing the side characters in and out between scenes like advertisements.

You can be critical of your society and women’s roles in it, without insulting and looking down on every other woman who is just trying to function/survive in said society. She doesn’t listen, doesn’t care what anyone else has to say or what they think. When she had the chance to actually help a woman escape the fate of the oppressive society she so vocally hates, she ignored her. She hands Cressida to the wolves, no modicum of empathy. I have given up on any character's story having justice. That said. Actor Luke Thompson who plays Colin is a French speaker. It would be cool if they cast a French or Canadian woman to play Sophie and allow the actors to speak French. In the novels Colin is the one with the artist's soul. I don't think Colin's sexcapades will will ruin him. On the contrary it might be a good set up for him to be ready for love as he has up til now seen and done everything.
I like your comment about writers "painting themselves into a corner." I think this happened a lot in Season 3 because they strayed from the source materials. I have read 3 Bridgerton books so far and Lady Whistledown is a humorous gossip. It's not that serious. The show writers are so busy hyping things up that they lose sight of the real story. I honestly do not understand why Shondaland chose a regency era romance. They did a good job with Queen Charlotte, but maybe that was because they did keep close to historical events. The took the Colin and Penelope story out of order. They are taking Benedict's story out of order. They're creating problems for themselves. I agree with you. They made Penelope so boring. Her flaws are what made her an interesting character to watch. I didn't like the girlbossification of Pen.
It's also so frustrating to watch Eloise go through the same character arc. She was my favorite character in seasons 1 and 2 and I just feel like they have no idea what to do with her. She was such a bad friend to Cressida but the show doesn't frame it as that, they frame it as good that she's flipped back to liking Penelope again. It's so annoying and boring! It would've been much more interesting to see her try to wrestle with wanting to support both friends but knowing that the two are opposed. Like she was being pulled in two directions.
They make us sympathize with Cressida then treat her like an unambiguous, mustache twirling villain, it's so confusing.
Also the Francesca thing disappointed me. Her and John are so lovely together and then they dismiss it at the end with introducing his cousin. I would've loved a sapphic love story in Bridgerton but Francesca was the wrong character to do it with.

What you said about stretching out the whistledown drama over the course or the season makes a lot of sense. Imagine if she came back from a winter without Eloise thinking on how she can be better and different in her approach to LW. So she comes back and starts from the beginning of the season with a different focus perhaps still with gossip mixed in. That would have shown a movement towards redemption. As these changes happen more questions are raised about LW and maybe the queen issues the challenge during episode 3 or so so there is a bit more space for the story to breathe. Oh wow, you and Jess Brownell seriously look alike! When you put up her image on your video, I did a double take, because yeah, you could be twins! Lol.
I agree with everything you said about the season, btw! Your opinions on LW just reinforced my belief that they should have not switched Benedict and Colin's books on the show. Penelope and Colin needed more time to grow, so they needed one more season before their's AND we needed a time jump like in the books. This is why Benedict's story also feels like filler this season.
Also, thank you for bringing up the jealous Colin sub plot! It made sense in the book being as he had been writing for YEARS (he was 33 in the book!), but in the show he's 22 and JUST started writing. It makes NO SENSE that he would be jealous of Penelope, lol. Again, this circles back to my previous paragraph regarding the mistake they did in switching the order of the books.
It's obvious Jess was trying to use as many subplots from the book in this season (and I have a theory that she did this because she changed Michael's gender/sex, so to make up for it, she wanted to add as many book subplots as she could, and will do the same for S4 [she has already said in an interview that S4 is going to be the season that's closest to the book it's based on] but many of them didn't fit because of the changes in the show since S1.
Regarding Edwina: That's so interesting because I don't remember Lady D saying anything about the prince! I remember her mentioning that Edwina met her match in India and then later on in the show I think it was Kate who said some things about them, how he's a reader/he's smart (I am paraphrasing, lol) and that Edwina is now horseback riding because of him, something she didn't like before (again, I am paraphrasing). Benedicts whole point was that after the end of season 2 he was so depressed and thought that he isn´t a great artist so he stopped trying. Sorry but some of these takes are so stupid. Like yes his arc and story could´ve been handled much better but that was the whole point that he lost his spark and he will find ehis spark and his muse in season 4 when he´s going to be he lead.

This season sucked (IMO). They wanted to do so many things, we had so many storylines to follow Colin and Penelope got lost and their story was a mess. We never saw Colin as a rake in the previous seasons, he went as usual traveling then came back a different man. It was never explained why he felt the need to change, he said he became what society expected him to be, but we never saw that he was treated differently becuase he wasn't a rake. The lessons to teach Pen to find a husband was just one, so it was a useless theme in the show. We never saw Colin changing his feelings for Penelope, he was simply lusting after her after their kiss. And to me that isn't romantic. The way he discovers she's LW is ridiculous, the whole "I'm angry but I'll marry you cause I'm a gentleman" is BS, he is the same guy who had sex with her before the marriage. And I'm sorry he then realizes he was just jealous becuase she was a published author?!?! I didn't like Benedicts and Eloise this season, they were two different people. Also nobody talks about how Anthony (who was terrified of a bee stinging Kate) accepts to travel on a boat for months to go to India while his wife is pregnant... leaving his family, not being there for Francesca's wedding. Francesca, poor baby, the swap makes no sense. Francesca manages to show her mother that love can be quiet only to have it all forgotten when he sees Michaela. I didn't like Penelope at all. She was forgotten way too easily. They built up the tension and the worry we felt when the Queen almost discovered the true identity of LW because of how furious she was with LW etc. only to have it resolved in a second. It's disappointing.

@@frankiethebookworm3163 believe me, I'm crying it from the rooftops how little it makes sense that Anthony is taking his pregnant wife to a several months long trip by ship to India. I think it's a complete character assassination of Anthony. He is overprotective and very dutiful. Man, he only got married in the first place because it was his duty. His duty is also to care for his mother and unmarried siblings and to care for his estate and patronages etc. It makes no sense, that he would want his presumed male heir to be born in India?!?! The journey by ship can already end disastrously, not to mention the illnesses that are foreign to 1800s British people. I mean, in Francesca's book it's one of the threads throughout this story that Michael got infected with Malaria while in India and now has to deal with the consequences. But the showrunners think it's a splendid idea to ship off an overprotective viscount and his pregnant wife to India to finally write them out of the plot.... Cheap.

And also opinions which everyone’s entitled to. All the ton did was gossip and pen put it on paper it’s really no difference. She got both ignored and treated like crap for years is it any wonder she started the scandal sheet in the first place? How can everyone be so angry at whistledown. When most of what she wrote came from the people themselves. If they themselves hadn’t been gossiping about each other pen wouldn’t have material in the first place. Lol

Nothing against bi Francesca but why genderbending Michael? Like she could be canonically bi and STILL end up with male Michael. And Benedict? I´m glad he´s canonically bi but again it could´ve been done better. Instead of Tilley Arnold they should´ve given him a male love interest and should´ve developed his bisexuality AND his lost of his passion (painting/drawing) throughout the whole season and much much better. There were barely good scenes about Benedict missing art

    • @awsome182

But Fran and Benedict are not "canonically" queer. Canonically, they are straight, because these books were aimed at straight women. Canonical means the way how it's originally, and not how it's changed in the show.

@@awsome182 but in the canon of the show they´re now canonically and offically bi. Even in the books you could technically imagine them potentially being bi since bi people are still attracted to the opposite gender. Again, in the canon of the show. In her book she was 28 but since in the show her story is set earlier her canon age for her story is now 19. Ot same with Daphnes and Simons child. In the books their first child was a girl but in the canon of the show their first child is a boy.

Normally I like when a show/movie is as close to the books as possible. But there are exceptions for minor or even bigger changes: a)the books contain sthg extremely problematic oe b)the books contain sth extremely illogical that just doesn´t make any sense or c) the books contain sth that´s not neccessarily bad but just isn´t possible to adapt on screen. One of these things is the Lady Whistledown reveal. It didn´t made any sense in the books for Pens identity being revealed and her not facing any consequences and confrontations, not even in later books. And it was sad that she stopped writing. And they took that illogical nonsense and did it almost exactly the same in the show. It doesn´t make sense that in the show Pen didn´t face any serious consequences or confrontations from other people of the ton (and let´s be real there won´t be any in future seasons) even though in the show Whistledown was much harsher and meaner than in the books. I´m glad that in the show she continues writing but her writing openly (and not anonymously anymore) still with NO consequences makes even less sense

    • @awsome182
      @awsome182 2 месяца назад +4

I think the reveal in the book was more impactful because of how Colin presented her. He did so with pride, admiration and love, praising her skills and wits, he literally paraded her infront of the ton, making sure that she cannot face negative consequences because of *how* he presented her.
I hated it how he left her standing alone infront of the crowd in the show. He stood awkwardly in the back, instead of backing up his wife. It's part of his development in the book that he acknowledges her as a prolific writer from whom he can learn. He acknowledges her skill and craftsmanship.

Yes! They tried to show Whistledown as a positive thing in the opening of the show this season, with her praising debutantes and calling out an abusive husband (who, let's face it, probably beat his wife after reading that column, and I think she would be fearful of that rather than proud and happy as they walked along), which is supposed to convince us she was doing this all along (a huge retcon) or she is better now.
Colin writes a lot of letters (which was something that could be published) and of course his travel journals. I don't mind Colin being a writer, but he had a lot of reason to hate Lady Whistledown, and it was cowardly to backtrack on that just to match up to the book.
