Dearest Reader, The third season is finally upon us . . . and I have to say it was a far cry from the previous ones. Dare I say, disappointing? Much like the lack of diamonds shining in the Queen’s court, my enthusiasm for the future of Bridgerton is dimming. But what could possibly be the cause of this lackluster entry? Is it because our lovers, Penelope and Colin, feel like minor characters i...

ruclips.net/video/oWdIxAyG1sc/видео.html created the best analysis of Colin and Pen's relationship. She was clearly paying attention.
I had added this as a comment elsewhere. If they felt the necessity to put in a lesbian character, it would work better with Eloise. Have Sir Phillip die instead of Marina. She already has two children, one of whom is a boy who can inherit (though I did know that one of those countries over there did let daughters inherit). Eloise could pursue her studies. They can raise the children together. I recently read a romance novel where one of the secondary characters was lesbian. The main character acknowledged that because they were women they could live together without question as spinsters, they could even dance together in public because there was not always enough men to partner the ladies. Their relationship simply would not be questioned as two unrelated men living together would.
Obviously a villain. Just because her parents are dominating and not as good as viloet bridgerton that does not mean she should be mean. She was mean to Daphne in first season and always mean to Penelope.
Season 3 was totally ruined for the main couple, Colin and Penelope because of all the side plots. Whoever wrote this season should be fired.
It is refreshing to hear someone like you that understand book readers. Pen and Colin was my favorite story, it is more relatable . The Main issue like you say was the way POLIN was treated like side characters in their own season . I wonder if they treated Nic like this because she is not a size 0 type of lead, Nic is such an amazing actress she was over shadowed in her season! Everybody was rooting for Pen story because most of us are not" diamond" and" pretty Bridgertons " . Pen represents all the wallflowers that toxic society deem unattractive and Plain. We we ready to see Pen shine .... We were ready to see more Colin's backstory and character development (we did not like rake or brothel Colin- We had this ark with Simon and Anthony already) . We were expecting flashbacks , more meaningful conversations between Polin as writers , Pen to really explain to Colin why she started writing LW(Colin had a more substantial exchange with Cressida-crazy! ) , sweet-cheesy romantic moments. And to Break our hearts even more implying Fran 's feeling for John may have not been real love after such beautiful /sweet courtship + the fact that there is no more Michael ! We all knew it was going to be an adaptation of the book but ........ Now i understand Marvel and Star-wars fans now ...
I 100% agree! I was disappointed because it felt rushed. I do feel like it did have something to do with Nic and her looks. And poor John! Justice for John!
I was disappointed as well, where was the passion from the book. I do believe that they edited out the love scenes do to nic is size and I think that is so wrong. They replaced the polin sex montage with Ben’s bc they had no faith in them and that’s why it was disjointed.
This suggested plot change could work but it puts a neat bow on the fertility issues there she and John got a baby but he tragically dies. It just feels trite compared to the fertility issues from the book.
@@Littlebit1031 I agree. But it wouldn’t surprise me that Brownell would want to soften the blow on Francesca since she’s her self insert
I hope I didn't already comment this, but most Scottish peerage titles are heritable by women, and Michaela can inherit John's title. If John and Francesca have a daughter, she would be in line before Michaela. If they don't and Michaela inherits, the question then becomes who will inherit from Michaela. Francesca choosing Michaela even though it means no children would be a powerful story, I think. Maybe an heir can be found from distant cousins -- maybe an orphan who needs a home -- a bit later. I'm hoping they ditch this "diamond" stuff, but I also don't think you can be that after your first season. A widow is not going to be the Diamond of the Season.
@@HuntingViolets it is totally possible that they could do that. I just liked Francesca’s journey with infertility up to that point since that theme hadn’t been explored yet in the show, but I’m sure they’ll fit it in.
@@madimiss It's kind of a tradeoff, I guess. Although they can still deal with infertility (or at least difficulty getting pregnant) while she's still with John.
@@HuntingViolets that’s what I think/hope this next season focuses on. I also wonder if Eloise will start writing letters to Phillip soon?
@@madimiss I dread that day, to be honest.
@@HuntingViolets haha, not a fan of Phillip?
As much as I wish for representation as a queer woman, I thought they could at least have left the reveal for Francesca's season. I was torn when Michaela was shown on screen, because I loved that we were finally getting a sapphic romance, but her appearance undermined Francesca's relationship with John that she had been building the entire season. It sucks to see it done in a horrible way, because it just creates more outrage than there would have been. I also feel for the women who related to Franscesca's experience, and would gladly let that plotline coexist alongside a different lesbian story in the show. All we can do is hope they put the right amount of respect and thought into rewriting this aspect of the series moving forward.
@@shoob6298 I completely, 100% agree with you! It cheapens their love story because now there is a hint of infidelity in it. Very disappointing.
This is my biggest gripe. I’m not closed to the idea of Mickayla but I do wonder how much of a role how she was introduced played in my struggle to embrace character’s introduction. I fear they are setting up an affair (likely an emotional one). And the end also suggests Francesca is lesbian in an unhappy marriage rather than a bisexual with 2 great loves. Both stories are great but for Francesca’s story to have the same impact/gravity she should genuinely be in love with John - the gender of her 2nd love be darned! Lol
@@lozer93gurl that’s bums me out too! It cheapens their story for me.
Season 3 is the only season I haven’t rewatched. So disappointed. And it wasn’t just because of Fran’s storyline. Colin and Pen’s was a disappointment too!
I agree! They really rushed through their storyline and really messed up Lady Whistledown’s apology tour.
Writer maybe writing Francesca not caring about being mother in this show
That’s true! They could just completely change their motivations which is fine too … just disappointing.
I was thinking if they wanted to flesh out Michaela in season 4, she might be able to get married, have a kid or 2 with that guy. They would move to India for a while, where either he, or Michaela dies of Malaria, which is in line with Michael's story in the book, Where Michaela or her widower, and their kids come back, for their son to be the next Earl. I put the possibility of the Man in because there's a part of the book where Michael is talking to a potential suiter for Fran, and the guy is just making Fran a sex toy. Michael steps in, defends her honor, and it shows just how much he is in love with her, outside of what he wants the relationship to be.
@@madmartagan100 that could work. Overall, there is just a lot of things they will iron out in Season 4.
I'm afraid that they will make the infertility issue abt how she never could get intimate with John coz she was never in the mood thing which will be a mockery of the real issue of infertility, which was something a lot of fans relate to. it reduces the pain of infertility and miscarriage for wht? to reduce it to be abt sexual orientation, there were other ways to do it..jst introduce a whole lot of new characters tht are insanely loved and give them their own space, jst stealling one love story and gender bending it was jst lazy writing or lack thereof , ......if love is love why couldnt they jst let it be.... they actually royally screwed this one tbh, there are jst too many imp plotlines that required M to be a man.
Yeah, I’m a bit worried how they’re going to handle that issue. Introducing her at the end of season 3 definitely ruined it for me. They could also make Francesca confused about her sexuality and then throw herself into making her own family… but yeah. Not sure if this was the best decision for Francesca’s season.
The whole reason they gender swapped Michael was because one of the directors or producers, or something like that is a lesbian and her favorite story was Francesca and Michael’s. She could “relate to it” and she wanted to make it her “watpad fanfiction”. I’m pissed and have deemed the entire show as non-redeemable and will never watch anymore seasons because of the Michael gender swap.
Yeah, that’s why I called Francesca a self-insert for Jess Brownell. I get that she wants Francesca to represent her, and representation is important. We all want to see people like us on the screen. My question is whose story is she overshadowing because of it. Again, this would not be an issue if she made an original spinoff series.
@@madimiss Fran was supposed to truly love John and go through so much heartache and all that is gone with her being speechless when she met the gender swapped Michael. I’m so angry with what they did, and in my eyes, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY THEY CAN REDEEM THE STORY! Throw the entire IP in the trash because I know so many people who will never go back.
@@whitneylivingston5706 yeah… I don’t like the infidelity path they are taking with this storyline. I loved her and John together and it breaks my heart that she was the first one to fall for Michaela.
@@madimissI am also a Turk and Turks are always shown as barbaric dark skinned people. I want a normal representation. But if they go and make Sophie Safiye, I would not support it.
This exactly almost word for words my thought on why the gender swapped kinda messed up the story, and how they cab fix it.
Great minds think alike!
_Happy Days_ went on for seven more years after "jumping the shark," by the way.
It is interesting to note that women could inherit in Scotland, where John's landholding is, so it's may not be the biggest plot-hole in that regard.
@@foxesofautumn ooooohhhhh…. Interesting point for further research!
Not only that, but Regency Romances make it seem that women can never inherent which is just not the case - Women can inherent, it just depends on how an estate is set up.
@@madimiss lesbians made it work. Queer history is not one pity party. Queer women led happy lives as long as they had money and didnt want to be a big part of society. Francesca is on record saying all she wants is to live a happy quiet life with a partner and the support of her family. Nothing fundamentally changes if her endgame love interest is a woman except 100,000s queer women FINALLY feel represented on screen. We never get anything. And for ONCE we are
@@tanyaevans9585 yeah, but they could have done that SO much better with Eloise, she could even have gotten to be the center of a season and her original story sounds like it would even have adapted better
@@TheEmmaHouli true. The only issue in this case is that John died so suddenly and so young. Maybe he didn’t have time to set it up? But it would be nice if they made that the case so Fran wouldn’t have to remarry.
I love everything you said. I, myself also didn't like the change bcuz FranChael's story is the best book among the series. We wont have this kind of reaction if Michael in the books is not beloved and popular. He's literally a tortured hero that people want to see. It also dont make sense if they do the great experiment like what they did in Queen charlotte, ending racism just bcuz a white king fell inlove to a black woman. Watch them do that also to francesca to end homophobia. There's so many plot holes aleady. Idek how they're going to fix. They cant handle heterosexual relationship well what more a sapphic romance.
@@ncz7 i love that michaela cant be a tortured hero and pine for Michaela and deny her feelings for her out of respect for John. Guess what - under Scottish law she can inherit. She can contract malaria. She can love Fran from afar. She can be a big slut who sleeps around (google Anne Lister). She and Fran can live happily in a caste without being bothered as many queer women did in that era
@@ncz7 the fact you dont think there is ANY way this can work indicates you dont think lesbian love stories are as deep and powerful as straight romances, which is your problem, not the show's.
@@tanyaevans9585lol reading comprehension is nowhere to be found. Read what i said again. Did i say that sapphic romance cannot be powerful. What im trying to say is about the source material and how well the show properly execute such sensitive topics. Bcuz from their record they dont do it well. If u deviate too much from the source material u lost the respect of book readers. They're going in the footsteps of GoT and The Witcher. Imagine Katniss Everdeen from hunger games genderswap into a Male. How will u react?.
I am deeply unhappy with the genderswap. And for me it doesn't have anything to do with being h*mophobic or anything like that. There are several shows I've watched solely for their queer couples (Spartacus and Shameless for example). I'm simply not a fan of straying away that much from an original story. I feel like the show is only Bridgerton by name by now because they've changed so much. So I'm wondering why they are not making a new IP or making a tv show from an original queer Regency story. These exist. I'll watch them gladly, but I want my Bridgerton siblings to stay as they were in the books.
@@awsome182 I agree. People can hate a change like this because it strays far from the original material. I think a lot of people find comfort in these books because they are predictable and because they know basically was gonna happen by the end of the story and now they’re changing so much about it. I don’t think a lot of people are going to like that.
@@madimiss Netflix is tone deaf when it comes to lesbian interracial couples, the ONLY way Francesca's story could've worked is if the show SOLELY centered them like Twilight. The fandom ranks every couple every season, it will be hard to top Kate and Anthony as they are still the best couple. I can already tell that Michaela x Francesca will come dead last amongst all siblings romances. I love Gen V (Jordan x Marie) and Black Lightning (Anissa x Grace) respective LGBTQ romances because there's intersectionality within these (black+Asian) groupings. The only time I felt a genuine connection with black+white lesbians was with Netflix's First Kill because it was a story that SOLELY focused on them, like Twilight. The Cullens only served to help Bella and Edward's union - willing to risk their lives. First Kill did this as well.
@@suzygirl1843 gen V was great! That show did a great job with that relationship mostly because they didn’t make it such a big deal in the way that a lot of shows like to point and say, look! We have queer characters now! Where’s our gold star? No, just make it normal, dude. It’s just two adults living their lives. I loved that show. So sad about Chance.
All I'm hoping is that Michaela has a twin brother named Michael who appears in the next season. I know this won't happen, but I'm desperately delulu like that.
I love how you want to deny same sex fans representation onscreen. Michael exists in the books. You can go read those if you like
@@tanyaevans9585lol, I don't deny same sex fans their representation on screen 😂 there are enough original same sex couples in shows and movies, especially nowadays. I simply don't like the cheap rewriting for pandering. Imagine if they had made Alec and Magnus from the Shadow Hunters straight 😂 the outrage! And rightly so. I'd be pissed if they had made them straight. To rewrite just shows me how lazy they are instead of investing in original and meaningful representation. But if you're happy with being fobbed off like this, go ahead.
I agree with you and give her a twin brother it makes so much more sense.
@@Mary.Petrie Same!
Not to mention spending so much air time fighting with violet, blaming her for the marriage delay and being jealous that violet was more excited for pen and Colin to make it a complete waste of time.
@@nl-uf2gb yeah the whole thing between her and Violet definitely was a waste of air time as well only to be proven right at the very end. I don’t like Bridgerton‘s message when it comes to drama and romance. I don’t feel like a lot of these relationships that we’ve seen have been very healthy and that’s been unfortunate for a show that’s all about romance.
Yes, the issue, for me, is the message. It was refreshing to see a true love connection that wasn't "loud and attention grabbing" saying that each love is unique to the couple without being "lesser." They gave it to us and snatched it, away.
I don't understand why they don't give more scenes to Madame Delacroix. She's been around since Season 1 and it's far more interesting than most side characters. Also, it's easier to navigate through most of the stories.
She only showed up to give a girlboss speech to Penelope. I feel like once she and Benedict were over, the show just kind of dropped her too.
Honestly in the disaster that was season 3 cressida was kinda the highlight for me. I think she was one of, if not the, most fleshed out character this season. Which is which i was screaming when it felt like they just threw her away.
@@rasmarytea5296 exactly!!! She was my favorite too even when she was being a Disney villain.
The title of this video is a question... The answer is YES. That is all 🤷🏽♀️
I have never ever liked Eloise’s character. She has always come off as very self-involved, spoilt, and rather whiney if i’m honest. I don’t even find her funny, just rude. You can be critical of your society and women’s roles in it, without insulting and looking down on every other woman who is just trying to function/survive in said society. She doesn’t listen, doesn’t care what anyone else has to say or what they think. When she had the chance to actually help a woman escape the fate of the oppressive society she so vocally hates, she ignored her. She hands Cressida to the wolves, no modicum of empathy. And now she’s gone off to Scotland, where i’m incredibly doubtful she will have any opportunity to grow as a person. Or any motivation to.
Honestly, I was hoping throughout the season that once Penelope and Eloise get back together, they somehow "adopt" Cressida into their friend group. All what Eloise learned about a non-loving family did not seem to matter in the end.
I like that idea!
I'm glad this video was recommended to me! You made some really great points. And I especially appreciate your point of view on Cressida Cowper, which is the opposite of how I felt about her. You opened me up to a bit of empathy toward her and I appreciate that. 🤗
@@dr.braxygilkeycruises1460 thank you so much! I really appreciate your comment.
Kate was pretty much the victim of the season the whole time (and a good person). I wouldn't say Edwina was ever brushed aside, made a villain, or forgotten about. At the end of the season, it seems likely she will be set up with a prince, and in season three, we find that she has married (would have liked to have seen what all happened, though). Kate had to take care of her family at 18, just as Anthony had to with his, because of the grief her mother was thrown into. She would never reach for a crust of bread if Edwina wanted it, and this self-sacrifice continued through season two. Lady Danbury also gave Kate bad advice not to rock the boat when she wanted to tell Edwina. And Edwina did the exact opposite of everything Kate advised. She did not listen to Kate's advice at all. If there was a villain in that story, it would be either Anthony for refusing love or Kate's and Anthony's mothers, but I don't know that I can villainize them for their mental issues either. I think it was a whole lot of unfortunate circumstances with no real villain. And Kate and Anthony were both kind of banished from season three too. Penelope did not redeem herself for me. They almost seem to work towards that at certain points but then step back. The show doesn't hold her accountable, the narrative doesn't hold her accountable, so her brief stuttering steps toward it become utterly meaningless. Lady Whistledown is a great thing or so they want us to believe. Marina alone should show that. Penelope never even attempted to make things right with her. I hope Cressida gets to meet the Ladies of Llangollen in Wales. I think there's more to Aunt Jo than meets the eye.
@@HuntingViolets I agree with what you said about Penelope. I was going to do a Victim or Villain video next on her. And I like the idea that Aunt Jo is not as rigid as she seems. What are the Ladies of Llangolen?
@@madimiss Two spinster ladies who ran away to live together in a cottage in Wales and wouldn't come back when their families tried to make them. They became quite famous and got famous visitors like Lord Byron. Wordsworth wrote a poem about them and Anne Lister (the series _Gentleman Jack_ is based on her) visited prior to marrying her wife by taking communion together in a church. Queen Charlotte talked her husband into giving them a pension. At one point, they considered suing a magazine that suggested they had a sexual relationship, so I'm hesitant to put a label on them they didn't want but also not inclined to say that says anything definitive considering the time. There is a Wikipedia page on them.
@@HuntingViolets huh… interesting. I will look more into it.
Not just women and not always Bridgertons, seeing what happened with Eloise and Theo.
@@HuntingViolets true! I will cover their journey in Penelope’s Victim or Villain video. Poor Theo! I feel so bad for him. I want to do Victim or Villain video on Anthony and Simon as well.
@@madimiss Sounds good. I love Eloise; the second half of season three did her dirty. In Benedict's book, Violet says she'd be fine with her children marrying paupers, so I feel like the show is really dropping the ball by keeping them apart. The uncrossable Rubicon shouldn't be money or class.
Cressida should just go find Lord Debling. He seemed to like her well enough, and she’s never said anything about needing to be in love. He doesn’t seem to care what other people think, and she would probably be happy enough running his household while he was gone for long periods of time.
So true! I’d love them together!
villain.
Honest Bridgerton writers are getting out of hand
@@geisianelopes9008 I totally agree! I feel like they leaned too heavily into the smut scenes rather than a true story.
They made Penelope so boring. Her flaws are what made her an interesting character to watch. I didn't like the girlbossification of Pen. It's also so frustrating to watch Eloise go through the same character arc. She was my favorite character in seasons 1 and 2 and I just feel like they have no idea what to do with her. She was such a bad friend to Cressida but the show doesn't frame it as that, they frame it as good that she's flipped back to liking Penelope again. It's so annoying and boring! It would've been much more interesting to see her try to wrestle with wanting to support both friends but knowing that the two are opposed. Like she was being pulled in two directions. They make us sympathize with Cressida then treat her like an unambiguous, mustache twirling villain, it's so confusing. Also the Francesca thing disappointed me. Her and John are so lovely together and then they dismiss it at the end with introducing his cousin. I would've loved a sapphic love story in Bridgerton but Francesca was the wrong character to do it with. I just hope the new showrunner can get it together for Benedict's season. Season 3 was such a mess.
@@FrumiousMing8 I 100% agree with everything you just wrote! They just wanted to get to the end goal and rushed through it all just to get there. I’m hoping that Benedict’s season is better … but I have my doubts
it also couldve been solved by edwina not forcing that relationship, in every episode kate tried to tell her that man wasn't what she was looking for but she still wanted to pursue
@@audisaidthis true, but I also think Kate owed her an explanation and a confession right before she walked down the aisle. But that’s just my opinion.
@@madimiss "[R]ight before" would have been awful, and I'm doubting Edwina would believe her at any time. Not saying she shouldn't have told her, but I do think Edwina would have struck out at her because that's what the writers wanted, come what may.
@@HuntingVioletsI wish that they went with the book version where Edwina found out before and gladly gave her sister her blessing. But I guess this was more dramatic.
@@madimiss Yes, and they didn't want to do another marriage based on "getting caught" (although they hadn't actually done anything) two seasons in a row, I guess. Although they have no such reservations about triangles, unfortunately.
@@madimiss I really do feel that they should have wrapped up the triangle before going to the altar -- we were cheated out of the wedding we wanted to see for an almost-wedding that was a mess.
I think audiences actually care a lot about Cressida after her character time let us gain empathy for her. Marina definitely got the shortest stick in the show (havent read the books). I think the poor treatment of Edwina mostly from Kate but also Anthony is brushed away as the queen promises to introduce Edwina to eligible royalty. I have seen someone else speculate that Cressida will come back as a main love interest.
I’ve always felt that Kate was treated rather poorly, and in the end quite harshly, by Edwina. And Mary if I’m honest. But I do agree with everything else you said, Marina was seemingly given the guise of a happily ever after with Sir Crane even though that doesn’t even make her happy. Her story and treatment is just sad all round, even in the books. And Cressida, wow, I was so disappointed that they just fed her to the wolves! I do hope they bring her character back!
Maria has a tragic ending in Eloise's book. that's all I'm gonna say because I don't wanna give spoilers
Oh I read that book recently and it made me sick to my stomach.
She mentioned in a recent article that Cressida is coming back. TBH, I’d prefer a spinoff show but … that’s just me.
@@madimiss ikr and i still don't get why people love Phillip, he's a terrible husband and neglecting father. also the biggest red flag in whole series. I'm genuinely concerned about Phillip and elosie shippers at this point.
There were a lot of things in S3 that were insulting to our intelligence................bad writing, no consistency with S1 and S2, no good storylines..............🤮
I was disappointed they didn't do anything with Edwina and the prince, but they did make it clear that, no, that didn't happen. Edwina "made a brilliant match abroad" would never be how the Queen talks about her nephew's marriage. She would say Edwina and Frederich married or something. (She doesn't say that Edwina is with the prince. She married someone in India, apparently.)
I guess I misheard. But why would they end season 2 hunting at this match and then go PSYCH!!!
Everybody has to fall in line behind Penelope, and that sucks.
@@HuntingViolets she is the FMC, therefore she must be right and everyone is wrong. The writers could have made her a complex character with a real arc, but they dropped the ball on that one.
@@madimiss I was ready to be on board with her if they gave her a proper redemption. They seemed to want to redeem her halfway and have everyone forgive her (Eloise even says it was her fault!) or no, she was brave, she's wonderful, Colin is lucky to stand in her light, his justified anger extinguished. Of course they had to send Kate and Anthony away to do this plot.
@@HuntingViolets no wonder Collin looked so confused the whole season, his character changed personalities and motivations like 15 times throughout this season haha
Yes! They tried to show Whistledown as a positive thing in the opening of the show this season, with her praising debutantes and calling out an abusive husband (who, let's face it, probably beat his wife after reading that column, and I think she would be fearful of that rather than proud and happy as they walked along), which is supposed to convince us she was doing this all along (a huge retcon) or she is better now. Colin writes a lot of letters (which was something that could be published) and of course his travel journals. I don't mind Colin being a writer, but he had a lot of reason to hate Lady Whistledown, and it was cowardly to backtrack on that just to match up to the book.
@@HuntingViolets this! I agree with every point you said especially about the abused wife. I’m scared for that woman.
@@madimiss Yes. Pretty cheap to use that to lift up Penelope. Sorry! I hate Lady Whistledown so much, and I find all the defenses of her in comment sections very odd. I'm not sure it would happen if so many people didn't like the actress. Yet a lot of these same people just want Eloise to be punished for trying to suggest women could live a different way.
@@HuntingViolets don’t you just love bigotry?
@@madimiss <sad smile> It really sucks so much.
I don't think the editor is as much in charge of the order of scenes as the director or writer or showrunner is, really.
I kept expecting Penelope to whip out a ukulele and start singing about a toxic gossip train too. Instead she got a YAAAAAS KWEEN and no consequences for her ruining the life of Marina and nearly ruining Eloise’s. What a load!
@@rachelannebach2360 if you read Eloise’s book, it makes it so much worse considering what happened to Marina …
@@madimiss Oh jeez. I'm afraid to ask, but I'm going to anyway. I mean, what else can they pile on a character whose actress was so traumatized, she had two significant psychiatric incidents after filming?
@@rachelannebach2360 honestly, justice for Ruby Barker. That poor girl went through way too much for this show. In Marina’s case, let’s just say that she takes a very long swim… if you catch my drift. (That’s if they decide to keep it in the show.)
@@madimiss Are. You. KIDDING ME? No wonder why Ruby Barker felt so used and discarded, not even counting the horrifying levels of misogynoir thrown at her because her CHARACTER, not her, dared to get between Penelope and Colin! What bull.
@@rachelannebach2360 yep. I actually have a video I’m working on about Marina, Edwina and Cressida and how they are the scapegoats of their respective seasons. I go into more detail then.
So gender swapping a love interest is a jump the shark moment? Serious question: Do you dislike queer women? Because I am struggling why you'd dimiss a whole season for gender swapping alone.
I did not communicate my full thoughts on the season in this video. But, if you watch my season 3 review video, you will see my main critiques of the show did not have anything to do with the gender swap itself. I just thought the writing this season was weak and the way they threw Michaela in the literal last minute of the season felt more like shock value than a genuine introduction of a character. I don’t dislike queer women, I don’t know where you got that assumption from. Representation across the board is very important. My main issue is with the writers and their mishandling of a lot of storylines this season. I will try to make that more clear in my next video.
2:13 true the spine off are great way to entertain
And it’s a good way to keep the audience interested for longer periods of time.
Basically what Jess Brownell said is that Benedict is the leading man for S4 but Francesca and Michaela will be hogging most of the screen time anyway. This just happened with the newest season.
I’m not looking forward to that. Ben and Sophie’s story (at least in the beginning) was my favorite. When the minor characters take up more screen time that’s when you know you have a writing issue.
@@madimiss It's either writing issues or a matter of the showrunner's personal priorities. Francesca is Jess Brownell's obvious favorite and together with the uncertainty of another season, she'll definitely cram all the development of Francesca, John, and Michaela into one season. She'll probably kill off John early or by the end of S4.
@@lilsyyyy that’s what I’m thinking too! He and Marina have a target on their backs.
I love Julie but I think they can't afford her. They need the budget elsewhere
The hate because of the lbgtq content, my word. The majority of the content is of heterosexual couples. Same as 99% of the content on netflix. We forget the uproar when Simon wasn't white.
@@MJ31579 I miss Simon! His actor was magnetic and transcendent in his role and people punished him because he didn’t meet their expectations. I don’t mind Michaela as a character, I just feel she was used more as a jump the shark, shock-value plot device rather than a character with her own story.
I think it's more about the manner in which they've incorporated the LGBTQ content than the inclusion of the same. Just imagine, for Benedict's arc in season 3, if they had focused on his artistic struggle, his efforts to establish a genuine identity as an artist and through it develop his sense of self and self-worth, and if they had introduced Mr Diaz (his would-be male love interest) as a character that helps Benedict navigate this journey, who shares in his interests and supports him through his struggles and through this the two develop an emotional intimacy which then leads to a romantic relationship - I don't think anyone would have criticised Benedict's bisexuality/sexual fluidity had it been developed in such a way. It's how cheaply and shallowly it was actually portrayed that I disliked. Why reduce such an important subject to mere smut? It was just so poorly and tackily done. Benedict deserved better, Luke deserved better, but it appears things are bound to get worse in season 4. As for the Michael-Michaela swap - it is completely unjustified. End of. If they wanted a lesbian arc, they should have given it to Cressida, Eloise or both (not necessarily with one another).
@@Lana-pk5go I prefer the artist rediscovering their love for art over mindless sex scenes. That’s decent character building.
Well, the existence of Brimsley and Reynolds and the fact that the fans loved their love story proves otherwise. People are fine with LGBT+ stories, if they are done well and make sense in-universe. Most people were also fine with Benedict being open to exploration and having feelings or desires for men as well. Most people even suggested Eloise may be gay (and most were fine with it) or ace. Some even suggested Cressida to be lesbian - and also most people were ok with that. What people were not OK with was introducing pointless plot points (Benedicts threesome, especially so clumsily used as a pointless sex interlude between the climax drama of Cressida's blackmail - not to mention reducing his bi/pansexuality to whoring around and having sex with multiple people at once). Many people also reacted badly to Michaela for the fact that Michael is a fan-favourite love interest of most people and the book is the most loved in the series. It also describes struggles many people resonate with - infertility, accepting second chance at love after losing the first one, feelings of guilt over that etc. Separate from the books, in the TV-show in-universe the terrible introduction of Michaela also completely invalidates Francesca's love for John, and her whole arc of making Violet finally accept that not all love is dramatic and she truly loves John, basically pointless.
Just making it into a lgbtq fan fiction. I am not interested in the least and will not be watching this show again. This is not what the Bridgerton book series is about. Each to their own.
Funny how the majority of the characters are heterosexual but you call it lbgt fiction when they try to be inclusive. The books are about love. Don't watch if you dont want to, 99% of the other shows available are of heterosexual, white, able bodied people, go enjoy.
Omg! Clearly a segment of the fandom is yelling and clamoring for more gratuitous s*x and calling it "Benedict exploring his sexuality." But who are these people? I didn't find it interesting when he was getting it on with the ladies and I don't find it interesting when he is having menages a trois with another guy. In the books the romantic heroes are described as rakes - pleasure seeking men who eventually tire of all this once they hit their late 20's early 30's. Are they going to introduce a drag show next? I guess that would classify as wholesome. Netflix is normalizing perversions. Netflix is grooming a "anything goes" audience.
I would love a Kanthony Spinoff. I doubt they will be back in Season 4. Something tells me we won’t physically see them in the show till Hyacinth and Gregory’s season 😫. I only think that because of how much of their life and milestones have been offscreen compared to their siblings thus far. I just don’t think production has any plans for them in S4 so a Kanthony Spinoff with a focus on their wedding, the birth of Edmund, a deep aftermath convo for the Sharmas, updates on Edwina’s life, etc. would be phenomenal!
@@soundmind174 the spinoffs would keep the fans interested! Plus, I feel like they’re too expensive to hire as extras now.
@@madimiss I agree. If they don’t do a spin-off then I hope by some miracle that maybe Johnny and Simone would get cast opposites in a rom com or something by someone else. I’d love to see the two of them on screen together some more. Otherwise I’m happy for them in their careers and will be supporting all their work.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic. The mere fact that the show runner said she’s going to explore Benedict’s sexual fluidity rather than his actual artistic ability or more personal growth just goes to show how important is it to have more sex than to develop someone’s character, dream and stability. Also,Season 3 was the most anticipated season and yet she failed in providing us the true meaning of Polin’s storyline.
@@MadinaAhmed90 season 3 felt super rushed. And I agree that the raunchy sex scenes are dominating the story which isn’t half as fun.
I have a hard time imagining that I will watch Season 4. I really wish they would replace the show runner. I don't trust her to fully develop the main characters properly or to provide consistency in their development over the entire season.
@@mozzarella121 I find it hard to even look forward to watching it.
She definitely needs to be replaced. She’s only furthering her own agendas here. Queer narratives and woke agendas.
