Jeju is an island completed isolated from the rest of South Korea. That's why Jeju dialect is very different and unique from the rest of the continental accents. Some linguist even argue that the Jeju dialect is a seperate language from Korean, but in my opinion, not really. Jeju dialect is kinda like Sardinian for Italians, but Sardinian is an actual language.
We learnt from textbooks as kids that Jeju had suffered and won from a lot of invasions, so their dialect started to develop in a way that they can speak faster and emotionless. Everything ends up short :0
I think korean accents seems simple. In Norway everyone seems to have their own accents XD. From my town I only need to drive for 30 minutes and there’s another accent. Plus many people have mixed accents because maybe one parent is from that town and the other from that island but the person had grown up in another part of Norway.
As a native Korean speaker born and raised in Korea, most of Koreans understand almost every dialect, even the North Korean ones. Some words are a little different, but that's not a big problem. Copying an accent is much more difficult than listening to it. Korean people can understand dialects from the mild accents in the normal conversation to the exaggerated lines in the movie. The only thing that I can't understand is Jeju dialect. I can only guess the meaning. I'm not that good in English, (I cannot tell the difference among the American accents.) but sometimes it's harder to undertand Jeju language than English.
If you go to deep countryside, it’d be pretty hard to understand what old people saying coz they have strong old accents. The reason why you said u can understand all dialects is young people these days have been influenced from seoul dialects (standard korean) a lot by ‘media’. So people who have regional accents are becoming to speak in milder accents as time goes. Thats why u feel u can understand them.
@@Kevin-br6wd so true..and this is also true to all countries..where the new generation think they can understand most of the regional languages due to their exposure in the television..but if they go to the countryside, they'll realize its very difficult to understand when they talk to the older people..
I agree with this statement. However, Jeju dialect is just too different, and all Koreans I have spoken to have little guess on what they say. I went to Jeju many times, and I can assure you, their dialect is quite unique.
I remember reading that the “dialect” used on Jeju island is technically not a dialect but an actual separate language. UNESCO listed it as an endangered language because newer generations are using Jeju language less and less.
heyheyhey it’s quite different from Korean since Jeju is it own island so back in history it wasn’t exactly involved much with the development of the Korean language.
So Jeju used the be the island for exiled nobles royalties etc. And since there were fewer communication and language influences from other areas / provinces / countries, this dialect is closer to that of the high class 1400-1800 korean
As a Korean American visiting Jeju, I remember the new friends that I met there telling me that If they were really speaking the Jeju dialect, I would not be able to understand them lol
I took a linguistic class and was told that Japanese and Korean are their own languages. Idk about Jeju dialect because we focused on china and all of the different "dialects" in china. I think it's just like Chinese and their "dialects" I mean it's basically a different language, you can't understand Mandarin if you speak Cantonese, or Shanghainess and visa versa. There are actually 7 language dialects (families) that are technically all different languages. Basically our differences between Spanish and Italian but down played.
It just reminds me of one day when a Korean was talking to me (with the help of an interpreter), the first sentence I said was "Are you from Bushan?" And the interpreter was surprised and asked me, "Yes he is, but how do you know that? " The Bushan accent that I've heard from some variety shows gives me a strong impression. As a New Yorker, Busan gives me a Brooklyn vibe and Jeollado is like your family from the south. Seoul is like Manhattan and Jeju is like Transplants from the midwest.
This video was so hilarious and it's so interesting to see how different the dialects are! They really sound like completely different languages sometimes.
Don't worry, it gets easier once you get the seoul Korean first, since it's easier and slower than the others and more common, then you can learn the others if you want

I always wanted to know about the differences of dialect in Korea so this was super interesting! I'm from osaka and found that the Busan accent was similar to Osaka, Seoul similar to Tokyo and Jeju similar to Okinawa (they have a whole different language there lol)
I feel like if you compare it to USA accents this is how I see it as (Obviously it'll be different for everyone else) Seoul: NYC, City area Busan: North East Coast or Mid West Jeju: West coast Jeollado: The South
🤣🤣🤣. My dad is from gyeongsangdo my mom, jeollado. I have such a soft spot for the jeolla accent. It just sounds like what natural korean sounds like to me. I love jyp artists and sunmi suzy and yeji are from jeollado. I feel happy that yeji and sunmi are from around jeonju where my mom is from
The New York accent is thick and not standard in the US. Seoul accent on the other hand is considered the standard accent in South Korea, so Seoul accent can't be the equivalent of New York accent.

저는 광주사람인데 어렸을때 할머니집에서 자란탓인지 정말 사투리 많이쓴답니다..뭐뭐했냐가 사투리인거 올해 처음 알았어요..
영상에 나온건 완전 극단적인 예를 든듯. 요즘이야 뭐 인터넷이 많이 대중화 돼서 다른 지역사람들도 많이 접하다보니까 그렇게 느끼는거고.

I always wanted to know about the differences of dialect in Korea so this was super interesting! I'm from osaka and found that the Busan accent was similar to Osaka, Seoul similar to Tokyo and Jeju similar to Okinawa (they have a whole different language there lol)
Mia Lewis I have a friend that is from Okinawa and i get super confused with some of the things he says. 😂
Osaka dialect is pretty, but I prefer Tokyo dialect. It's easier for me to understand.
IKR, in Tokyo I can understand everybody when I'm in Osaka sometimes I'm Like "mo ikkai" and Okinawa's friends I'm just like "is it even Japanese ?!"
The dialect is so different, in Hiroshima and stuff it's also hard to understand
이건 진짜 주기적으로 봐줘야됨

In case it wasn't obvious already, jeju isn't considered a korean dialect, but rather a separate sister language of korean

I feel like if you compare it to USA accents this is how I see it as (Obviously it'll be different for everyone else)
Seoul: NYC, City area
Busan: North East Coast or Mid West
Jeju: West coast
Jeollado: The South
I'd say Busan is more the rough NY 'tough guy' accent(Bronx), while Seoul would be more North East Coast.
🤣🤣🤣. My dad is from gyeongsangdo my mom, jeollado. I have such a soft spot for the jeolla accent. It just sounds like what natural korean sounds like to me. I love jyp artists and sunmi suzy and yeji are from jeollado. I feel happy that yeji and sunmi are from around jeonju where my mom is from
Are you saying people can't understand us West coasters? You're partly right, but I seriously can't understand people from the East coast either 🤙☠️
The New York accent is thick and not standard in the US. Seoul accent on the other hand is considered the standard accent in South Korea, so Seoul accent can't be the equivalent of New York accent.
