I thought that as well. She tried calming nutsy down and seemed to be getting her to go confront the dirtbag, the right target for any anger. It sounds like she was a smart decent woman.
There's a Bible verse that there's nothing new under the sun'...so accurate with your comment honestly. People's pain joy and experiences were just as today. Nothing is different just hid it better
You can't play with people's hearts. This is the tragic result. John was the catalyst, Annie was the spark and Mildred was dynamite. Incredible illustrations and photos. Heartbreaking story. Thanks BC
Even today, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness is not easy. Back then, there would have been no relief or shield from the onslaught of emotions. Very sad case. Thank you Brief Case.
This tale was truly a terrible tragedy that tainted so many lives. John probably went on with the rest of his life without learning any lesson from his narcissistic behavior. 😢 Thank you, Professor Brief Case, for your brilliant retelling of this crime. Hope you have a wonderful week!!!
Morning BriefCase! Have lived in Vermont since I was a kid, and have lived in Montpelier for years! My neighborhood today, yay! Presently live one street away from Liberty Street. RIP Annie 💖
@@stacielarson1599 We've had two murders in one hundred years in the capitol; our murders up in the state, until recently have been rare - I probably read about this years ago and forgot about it. We were mad we were sad back then BC? I wouldn't say we're much better today in looking after mental health 🆘😥 thanks for another trip back in our time's ⚖️🇬🇧💯🙏😢
Sad for both young women. Annie was a very compassionate and honest lady. If all the accounts of her behavior are true (and we have no reason to doubt them), Mildred seemed to have been suffering from what used to be called manic depressive disorder (biopolar now). She most likely knew what she was doing but couldn't control it. Thank you, BC, for another great story.
My take is (in addition) a Cluster B personality disorder, perhaps Borderline Personality Disorder. Even 30 years ago, broader discussion about personality disorders had only just begun really - and only slightly at that. It’s only been more publicly known about in the past 10 to 15 years. There’s a strong connection (in many cases) with early childhood s.3.xua| abuse, which I can imagine was even more rampant back in this era, very sadly.
sitting with my knee up, because i've damaged i think the ligament listening to BF, on a cold Monday what Mildren did was wicked, since Annie was also innocent in all of this. they both deserve better than John John was a total cad, in every way
He was no prize and they should have both publicly humiliated him then washed their hands of him. But Mildred had darker plans and took an innocent life. I think she got off too lightly. Yes, she had mental problems but she knew right from wrong.
Hi!!! I guess there has been love fights since the start of time. Thanks for this interesting story. I always look forward to your stories. Nice Video!!!...🇺🇸🦋
I live in Barre Vermont for 13 months 2015 16, worked in Montpelier so this episode was especially interesting to me. Vermont is the granite state, the grave yards, the headstones are amazing, I wandered and was spellbound by the carvings .
Women could buy a gun in this time period?? Wow. Mildred sounds a bit on the unhinged side. Sounds like some sort of bipolar disorder ran in the family. She was still wrong for killing Annie, pregnant or not, mental issues or not. John of course was definitely a cad. Thank you BC for a most interesting and unusual case.
Women couldn't vote, couldn't have a bank account without a male cosigner and permission, and could be sent to an insane asylum for anything. But yes, buying a gun was pretty normal. It wasn't the wild west, but protection from bad humans and wild animals and rabid dogs was very real.
You got me curious. So I went and looked it up. It doesn't seem that we ever had laws in this country against women owning firearms. However, there were laws prohibiting Native Americans and African-Americans from buying firearms. No shocker, that.
Sounds like a family with a history of depression and Mildred seemed to have this as well as some other issues. Her planning belies her mental state, although honestly the difference between mental asylum and prison was minimal those days.
Good morning BC from Black Diamond Alberta, love that you pronounce Montpelier. Most from Vermont do not!😅 went there often when living in Montréal. Have a great week. 😊
Thanks, I could not work out how to pronounce it as a few friends from USA gave me different versions, I also checked on local news programmes, I hope it wasn't too bad
I live in Southern Ontario, and years ago my sister went to Middlebury College in Vermont. I would visit her 2-3 times a year. I loved the town and the state, but the way most people living there pronounced Montpellier hurt my Canadian ears, because I was definitely expecting a French pronunciation. 😂
What a story. BC never disappoints me. Old cases that are so riveting they keep me watching most twice to catch all the information. Mondays are now looked forward to, since I watch Brief Case . Life is often stranger than fiction, these stories prove that. Thanks BC keep ‘em coming. 🇺🇸
Hi!!! I always enjoy your stories. This is a love tangle. A young lady lost her life. This type of behavior has been going on forever. Poor Annie. Thanks for this story...Nice Video!!!...🇺🇸🦋
You have lit a fire in me that has burnt previously on a few occasions..... An interest of lives other than my own or those around me in our time.... Maybe as a means of my own escape from the passing of loved ones... Or maybe as a means of reasurement that many through history have struggled and suffered and that each one of us is not alone in our experiences of pain and loss..... Thank you.
Wonder how society treated Mr Wheeler. The epitome of a bounder and a cad! Playing with the affection of not one but two ladies. BC, any idea where he went? I'm guessing politics lol
@@alsmith9853 women of the time had no legal ability to take care of themselves financially unless they inherited enough money to have a money manager or benevolent male relative. They also had few job prospects. So no.

What a story! Years ago this could have been a movie of the week! Love this channel- the stories are always engrossing and compellingly told. Add the vintage images and you have a recipe for fascinating stuff. Bravo!
A sad story. If John Wheeler looked anything like the drawing of him it’s hard to understand the depth of passion he inspired. Undoubtedly Mildred was mentally ill and her pregnancy and the loss of the baby would also have made her illness worse. Poor Annie deserved so much better
She may have had mental problems, but that doesn’t mean she did not plan and carry out the murder. Sorry, she was guilty and at least should have been imprisoned.
Something similar happened in my hometown, Topeka, Kansas, in 1977. The outcome was different, though. A man named Thad Sandstrom, who was an executive at a local TV station, was shot and killed by his wife Milda. She took a drug overdose then, but she recovered. Milda entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, but the jury found her guilty. She had driven to Oklahoma, bought a gun there using false identification, went to a shooting range to practice, and then drove home to kill him. The prosecutor made a good case for premeditation and against the insanity defense. The reasoning was that being angry with your husband for wanting to be with another woman did not amount to insanity.
I am so excited for this brief case!!! I am a Vermonter 🥰 I know all of these town/city’s! Thank you for sharing this story, regardless of how truly sad it is.

That Annie was willing to listen to and even go with Mildred to talk it out with the source of the problem John, speaks volumes of Annie’s character.
