Sad for both young women. Annie was a very compassionate and honest lady. If all the accounts of her behavior are true (and we have no reason to doubt them), Mildred seemed to have been suffering from what used to be called manic depressive disorder (biopolar now). She most likely knew what she was doing but couldn't control it. Thank you, BC, for another great story.

    • @CC3193

My take is (in addition) a Cluster B personality disorder, perhaps Borderline Personality Disorder. Even 30 years ago, broader discussion about personality disorders had only just begun really - and only slightly at that. It’s only been more publicly known about in the past 10 to 15 years. There’s a strong connection (in many cases) with early childhood s.3.xua| abuse, which I can imagine was even more rampant back in this era, very sadly.

Something similar happened in my hometown, Topeka, Kansas, in 1977. The outcome was different, though. A man named Thad Sandstrom, who was an executive at a local TV station, was shot and killed by his wife Milda. She took a drug overdose then, but she recovered. Milda entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, but the jury found her guilty. She had driven to Oklahoma, bought a gun there using false identification, went to a shooting range to practice, and then drove home to kill him. The prosecutor made a good case for premeditation and against the insanity defense. The reasoning was that being angry with your husband for wanting to be with another woman did not amount to insanity.

Can’t wait to listen to you Mr. Brief Case every Monday morning with my cup of coffee! Thanks for another intriguing case. We’d never know about these obscure cases without your hard work. Everyone in this case was unfortunate except John.

She Couldn't Have Been To Mentally Ill - To Be Able To Compose Herself In A Courtroom. Also, If Her Family Had Knowledge Of Her Mental Instability, Why Didn't They Have Her COMMITTED? She Got Off Easy. Once Again...No Justice For The Victim.

Lot of people blaming John who was undoubtedly a creep, however Mildred was obviously nuts, and foolishly she listened to intrusive thoughts.

What a crying shame that Annie was such a nice young lady to go with the "other woman". So tragic that had she been less amiable she may have lived. Dodging a bullet from Mildred and the one of being wed to a cheating womaniser.
