Spurning the opportunity to marry well, then taking up with another man in the absence of her husband, it's apparent Belle danced to the beat of her own tune. Thanks for covering this, BC.
This is definitely an interesting case. Also given the time period and the victim I am not surprised how the case ended. It is so easy for many to find pity for Mrs. Adams despite the fact hotel staff banned her from Mr. Kincaid's room and eventually the hotel and yet she still found her way to his room. Given that information and what the other people heard during the time of the murder versus the narrative during the trial I am left with a lot of questions. Was Mr. Kincaid really abusive or was she? The relationship was definitely toxic, but jealousy seems to have been the driving force behind her actions. People also seem to have been swayed by her beauty because you know, how could this beautiful woman ever commit such a crime. Thanks for another great case BC
It sounds to me like many cases even today...both seemed like they were abusive and toxic, but were unwilling to give up before it cost one of them their life.

Belle was born Hetty Belle Petty in Illinois, Ward may have been an alias she used later. She married in 1893. Her daughter Vera appears to have been raised by her father’s family but she did marry from her maternal aunt’s house so obviously remained in contact with them. Looks like Belle died in San Francisco in 1916 aged about 40 under the name Rowley, her sisters placed a notice in the papers.

16:28 Belle didn't need to be strong. She just needed to be quick and cunning. If she was persuasive with Charles, like she was with the porter, Charles could've let his guard down. Speaking of which, I'm surprised that the prosecutor didn't focus on the fact she gained access to Charles's room (again) without his permission. If she was there to get the rest of her things, she could've grabbed them and left before Charles showed up.

Hello BC...comment for support! Sad end to a toxic relationship regardless of who was the abuser...that she only received 5 years was surprising. Sad that women has such little choices in life back in those times. Thank you yet again for another story, and have a lovely week! 😊 (Resa)
This seems to be a crime of passion. Belle made many foolish decisions in life. The jury clearly took their responsibilities seriously and deliberated carefully. The sentence of five years seems unduly lenient but it seems that the consequences of her lifestyle choices chipped away at her self esteem and Charlie Kincaid’s treatment of her didn’t help. It is never right to commit murder and it’s never wise to use and abuse someone, sometimes it can push someone too far. Belle and Charlie were both attractive people who could have made better decisions. It’s a sad story. What Belle did was incredibly wrong but she seemed more weak than wicked
Her sentence was a slap on the wrist because the victim was black. Their obviously interracial relationship was safe enough in Canada, but it's still a racist country to a lesser degree. He was probably a quality person because judging by his approximate age, his parent(s) had enough sense to flee to Canada before the ink on the Emancipation Proclamation was dry. America remains a popular destination for blacks who are fundamentally suckers.
Always look forward to BC Monday! Certainly a woman with a series of bad choices! I hope that during her time in prison, she had time to reflect on her mistakes and perhaps make amends for them. I always get such a kick out of stories that have phrases such as, "there were problems in the marriage". Welcome to ALL relationships, including marriage. Marriage is not a problem-free ride. Expect problems and unless abuse or adultery crop up, stick it out!!! Unrealistic expectations head so many of these tragic stories. Waffling or being a weak-willed person, has never seen anyone through a marriage. I have yet to finish the video. Sometimes I marvel at what people put up with in a marriage and other times I'm flabbergasted at folks quiting their marriage so easily and so quickly and so pathetically. We'll see how this unfolds.
@@hobbspitality9739 I'm very happy for you!! We celebrate 21 years. How about you guys? People are often discouraging. If a couple hasn't been married long, they say just wait, it'll fail. Great video. It's so bizarre that attractive women got pretty privilege back then, especially when it came to deleting men. She literally had the "smoking gun" weapon in her hand with witnesses everywhere, but basically got a slap on the wrist.
Prostitution is a lifestyle that lends itself to questionable relationships. I’m a police officer, a detective that works vice. I’ve seen killings committed by one party or the other. I find that the seediness of the lifestyle is to blame and is not indicative of the kind of people they really are.
This seems like one of those mutually abusive, toxic relationships, but whereas Charlie seemed more than ready to move on, Belle just couldn't get over her jealousy and having been dumped. It definitely was NOT self defense, not even close! Good case!

Often, married wives who are left alone or feel their spouse interested is no longer interested in them, especially after having children, tend to fantasize about a new romance. For some women that can get them into trouble. She was trying to find a replacement husband but picked a man that wasn't ready for that. She went into the relationship too quickly with Charlie and probably pushed her into being a prostitute. There was no way she could support herself with a child and there were no laws to make a husband pay spousal/child support.
Belle made very bad decisions and this young man lost his life senselessly; their relationship was toxic and Charles made the right decision by ending it to avoid this but she was over her self and deliberately set out to kill him, Justice was not served.
"a social stigma at the time" for divorcees? Well, if you think about it.. there kinda still is, just not nearly as much.. what are many gonna think when they find out you've been married 4 times and in the middle of another bad relationship?
I don't think there is much of a stigma on divorce, but I see your point on there being a stigma of having multiple divorces... On second thought, maybe "stigma" isn't the right word. Theoretically, marriage is supposed to be "til death do you part." One divorce is easy to overlook as just making a bad or impulsive decision. 4 divorces would probably make you think that the individual doesn't value marriage and wouldn't be a good option to pursue a relationship with.
@@summerhall5163 while I fully agree...let's assume a 42yo man walks in a let's you know he's had 3 wives, but single...wouldn't your first thought be "I wonder why..?" Most people would think certain things...at least if they're using their head..."must be kinda stupid, bc he seems prone to bad decision-making, he's prolly an asshole, or...how many of em are still alive...oh, wow only one? That's....interesting..." Anyway, I just meant to say that there's still a lot of judgement cast on people...esp if there's a child involved.
Belle's actions were sad because her life went downhill. What incredible research on this case! It does make you wonder how this happened due to her size. Thank you Brief Case for another amazing episode!!!
Good Evening from an island in the Pacific! Hi @Brief Case and friends! Just in time for my bedtime routine! 😘😘Always a "relaxing" highlight of my week...as far as true crime can be "relaxing"...🥴🥴
Hi, I saw your very lively Brief Cat on the video you narrated for The Crime Reel: so cute. Keep collaborating: it is so fun to hear your voices on each other’s channels.
This is simply a case of a scorned, rejected woman. People never want to believe women can be evil. They think women are nurturing and wholesome. Women can be just as evil as men. Complete injustice for that young man. Cheating or ending a relationship is not a reason to kill.
Her husband abandoned her and his child, perhaps with no means of support. I do not understand why she couldn’t return to her parents’ home, but at least they took in their grandchild. Perhaps they had disapproved of her marriage. She appears to have been a morally and intellectually weak woman. I don’t know. I think if another had been present his/her voice would have been heard. Also, the victim said “SHE’S killed me”. I wish information about the lives of her husband and child post murder had been included. Also any census or other historical information on Belle after she was released from prison.
@@BriefCaseOfficial I don't know what came ove me, BC 😕. I typed your Channel name correctly and then proceeded to mis speak your name. Please, accept my apologies 🙏.
If He Was Violent And Abusive, Why Did She Want Him - After HE Rejected Her!? If She Left Him Alone It Never Would've Happened. She Was Not Only A Killer, But A Proficient LIAR! There Was Never A Struggle. She More Than Likely Caught Him By Surprise - When He Refused To Take Her Back. She Got Off Easy, No Doubt, Due To The Fact She Was A Woman. Too Bad The Victim Never Got True Justice.
I honestly don’t think it’s sad or tragic. Belle was born with a lot going for her but she had to do everything she wanted, which were all wrong, destructive choices. She had no thought of her child and husband, no concern about consequences of anything. All she cared about was to be considered attractive and getting attention. She sounds like she was full of histrionics and then played victim when her bad choices got her really in trouble with the law. Her life was trash and it reflected in everything she touched. That’s literally the story of most people’s lives, both back then and now.
OMG I kinda ruined this one for myself, because I thought you said her husband's name was AnSEL Adams (not Anson). So through this whole story of her running off with a musician and doing sex work, I couldn't pay close attention, just kept thinking "And her husband would turn out to be one of the most famous photographers of all time." In fact I figured that would be in the conclusion statements. 😂😆🤣 Not only did I hear the name wrong, but Ansel Adams lived and worked a bit later than this story. But not by much, and he DID focus mainly on the Rocky Mountains, which extend into Canada. I could very easily see a gold prospector in that area getting fed up with not finding enough gold to get by, and start photographing the beautiful landscapes instead.
I'm glad Charles got Justice Even if it was 5 unfair years. Because I really thought Belle was gonna get away with it due to the unjust of other races doing days with sad continuance within our days.
@@BriefCaseOfficial you're very welcome. It seems people still don't understand the difference between love and dependence. Despite the violence, this woman had other supports to turn to and she chose not to. I somewhat doubt the defence story. Thank you again. Brilliant as always.

Hello BC; what an unusual situation; husband goes in search for gold, wife decides time to look for real love and to make ends meet resorts to "prostitution" (?). Love and jealousy not a good combination. Divorce was frown upon? cheating a husband should be worse I think and selling herself incomprehensible. My goodness what was the woman thinking? Belle made very bad decisions and this young man lost his life senselessly; their relationship was toxic and Charles made the right decision by ending it to avoid this but she was over her self and deliberately set out to kill him, Justice was not served.
How can you be so sure? He could have effectively been her pimp?
@@nicolad8822 I think he was her pimp
Fascinating story told with great precision!👏🎯
It's such a shame they couldn't make the relationship work, as I bet they made a very handsome couple😍😍
Always great on this channel 👍🏼
Thanks for watching
Thank you ❣️
Good Evening from an island in the Pacific! Hi @Brief Case and friends! Just in time for my bedtime routine! 😘😘Always a "relaxing" highlight of my week...as far as true crime can be "relaxing"...🥴🥴
An island in the Pacific sounds nice
@@BriefCaseOfficial It's great as long as the aircon is working! At all times. Lol🥹
I agree with you, but everybody has a cross to carry and for some people it's jealousy.
Love this show. I love history, love mystery, I love solving crimes.
Interesting story. Thank you 😊
Thanks for listening
Good Monday morning from Texas BC! Another wonderful old case!
Morning!
You do a wonderful job. This channel is one of my favorites.... ❤if not my favorite. 😊
Wow, thank you!
Great story Brief Case. Thank you

Thanks for listening
Very enjoyable narration & interesting case from times a long ago. Thank you

Great, as always!
Thank you! Cheers!
She was working as a prostitute, but accusing him of having an affair. Unbelievable.
And how many times do we see the ‘boyfriends’ of prostitutes living off their earnings?
You think he did not put her out to prostitute herself? He was probably recruiting another girl to live off!
I always hitctge "Like" before even watching as with Brief Case, I ALWAYS know it's gonna be good ♥️! You didn't disappoint Crimey 😊!
Thank you so much, but not Crimey
@@BriefCaseOfficial I don't know what came ove me, BC 😕. I typed your Channel name correctly and then proceeded to mis speak your name. Please, accept my apologies 🙏.

Ah, the passion.......So glad I'm too old for it.......😂
A case where a woman was NOT hanged for murder? Tell me more ❤
She was convicted of manslaughter, not murder, the latter including pre-meditation.
Well it was 1869 and he was black
@tyrant7583 actually it was in the 1890s but hey pretty much the same thing.
Another great video from my favourite channel 👍👍👍
Thanks so much
As usual awesome job B.C...sad sad story 😞
Thanks for listening
Belle was pretty but.......thanks for including so many pictures, I love looking at all the old pictures. God bless Brief Case❤
Thank you Dixie :)
Listening from saint lucia keep up the good work
Nice :)
Should she have gotten more time? Yes! However we can ALL take an educated guess on WHY she didn't!
Frankly, that's why I expected her to be acquitted.
Thank you BC for another interesting case very sad it is too, it's the way you tell em 👏👏👏👏
Thanks for listening
I enjoyed this. I'm happy to hear about a Canadian one. Thank you!
A prostitute and Thief who got away with murder ! 🤢
Poor musician !😢
Good morning from Alerta. Loving your channel ❤️
Thank you!
Thank You
I honestly don’t think it’s sad or tragic.
Not only did I hear the name wrong, but Ansel Adams lived and worked a bit later than this story. But not by much, and he DID focus mainly on the Rocky Mountains, which extend into Canada. I could very easily see a gold prospector in that area getting fed up with not finding enough gold to get by, and start photographing the beautiful landscapes instead.
Thank you so much ❤
You're welcome
Good morning BC from Exshaw Alberta, even camping I will watch!
Thanks :)
Isn’t it a bit wintry for camping in Canada?
@@leedsman54 .no snow yet, it has melted, we have a small trailer with a heater.
Fine effort as always.
Thanks
I'm glad Charles got Justice Even if it was 5 unfair years. Because I really thought Belle was gonna get away with it due to the unjust of other races doing days with sad continuance within our days.
Thumbnail looks like Cynthia Nixon.
Thanks for sharing this interesting case BC.
Thanks for watching
16:45 another goodie as aleays much love my friend. I am always fascinated by these cases! ❤
Thanks again!
I live in bc! nelson and victoria. awesome.......was very surprised to hear these locations in your story.....great one again.....enjoyed it!
Thankyou :)
Many thanks B.C.
Thankyou so much Tamsin
@@BriefCaseOfficial you're very welcome. It seems people still don't understand the difference between love and dependence. Despite the violence, this woman had other supports to turn to and she chose not to. I somewhat doubt the defence story. Thank you again. Brilliant as always.
Well researched
Thanks
Amazing video
The unsolved murder of Agnes Bings would be a great story to tell, she was killed by who they called the Jack the Ripper of Canada, quite gruesome. Thanks for all the great videos I always look forward to Mondays now 😊
I will look into it - Thanks
Love from Ethiopia ❤
Not sure I have ever had a comment from Ethiopia, how is it there today
@@BriefCaseOfficial its good here today, I'm a huge fan, amazing narration. Great job
Poor Charles; you never know who you meet along life's twisted roads. Have a good week BC and faithful listeners. Elizabeth
Wait! Let me pause everything to watch the latest Brief Case video!!❤
The Idea of beauty was certainly different in those day's.
