I love this channel. But what always becomes clear is just how hard it was to be a woman in times gone by. If a girl lost her parents she had to find a way to live, if she got pregnant and the father didn't stand by her she had to find a way to live while being shunned by society. This is such a sad story.
Life was hard for everyone, boys and girls. Stop with the whole “poor girls” bs, everyone suffered especially children that didn’t have anyone to take care of them.
She was beautiful but behaved stupidly while she was at the house of the judge she should have known better than to allow herself to be seduce by this young banker because the only thing a woman in those days had was her virtue and her good name Had she kept this man at a distance maybe the results would have been different she would even got someone well off to marry her and her life would have been different It was the way of those times women with no family or money had to watch her steps and her behavior and give no occasion for rumors or gossips those the times difficult for women
Boys suffered too but women had fewer options. In general one could be a wife, domestic servant or prostitute unless you had education, wealth, family or a lot of good luck. Children of both sexes had even fewer options.
Until the mid 70s, American women legally could not have a mortgage, bank account, car loan, or credit card without the co-signatre of any human with a cock.
When a story begins with "her mother passed away, shortly thereafter her father died" and leaves a 13 year old orphan, I sense this is going to be a very sad account. To me it's the choices we make in life; Helen could have made a good life provided guidance which she did not have. She was beautiful. RIP. Have a good week BC and faithful listeners. Elizabeth

Just because they are working girls does not mean that they are liars are not truthful, so the judge was wrong to say that their testimony should be ignored
What is really striking for me about this story is Helen’s rise and fall and attempt to rise again and make a new life for herself in New York using the education, manners and culture she had been taught. She did this despite her disadvantages, any previous mistakes, disadvantages of class, gender, education, whatever - this to me is both resilient and nothing short of heroic. Even as a child she showed these qualities. Sometimes people like this are applauded and rewarded. And sometimes they are abandoned to their fate, then their lives are taken apart. This story has so many echoes in contemporary 21st century life! I also noticed shades of society’s double standard here: Richard Robinson/Frank Rivers was allowed to continue with his life with no blame, while Helen Jewett had hers taken from her. I noticed that during the trial there also seems to be a link between the defence lawyer concealing potentially incriminating evidence in the form of letters and with the sudden appearance of the witness, his alibi and testimony in defence and ultimate acquittal of Frank. Someone else has also commented that this is one of the first tabloid- appeal crime stories of New York City - which makes it doubly interesting. Hoping to see many more! 🦋
