I love this channel. But what always becomes clear is just how hard it was to be a woman in times gone by. If a girl lost her parents she had to find a way to live, if she got pregnant and the father didn't stand by her she had to find a way to live while being shunned by society. This is such a sad story.

Life was hard for everyone, boys and girls. Stop with the whole “poor girls” bs, everyone suffered especially children that didn’t have anyone to take care of them.

She was beautiful but behaved stupidly while she was at the house of the judge she should have known better than to allow herself to be seduce by this young banker because the only thing a woman in those days had was her virtue and her good name Had she kept this man at a distance maybe the results would have been different she would even got someone well off to marry her and her life would have been different It was the way of those times women with no family or money had to watch her steps and her behavior and give no occasion for rumors or gossips those the times difficult for women

Boys suffered too but women had fewer options. In general one could be a wife, domestic servant or prostitute unless you had education, wealth, family or a lot of good luck. Children of both sexes had even fewer options.

When a story begins with "her mother passed away, shortly thereafter her father died" and leaves a 13 year old orphan, I sense this is going to be a very sad account. To me it's the choices we make in life; Helen could have made a good life provided guidance which she did not have. She was beautiful. RIP. Have a good week BC and faithful listeners. Elizabeth

    Good morning,
It’s sad to think that nothing really has changed when it comes to your status in life. If people think you’re below them, that’s how they will talk about and treat you. Luckily not everyone is that way. Unfortunately, back during that time everything was judged. There wasn’t really any closure for Helen or justice, which is the sad part.
Thank you for another interesting and intriguing story and I hope you have a wonderful week

What is really striking for me about this story is Helen’s rise and fall and attempt to rise again and make a new life for herself in New York using the education, manners and culture she had been taught. She did this despite her disadvantages, any previous mistakes, disadvantages of class, gender, education, whatever - this to me is both resilient and nothing short of heroic. Even as a child she showed these qualities.
Sometimes people like this are applauded and rewarded. And sometimes they are abandoned to their fate, then their lives are taken apart. This story has so many echoes in contemporary 21st century life!
I also noticed shades of society’s double standard here: Richard Robinson/Frank Rivers was allowed to continue with his life with no blame, while Helen Jewett had hers taken from her.
I noticed that during the trial there also seems to be a link between the defence lawyer concealing potentially incriminating evidence in the form of letters and with the sudden appearance of the witness, his alibi and testimony in defence and ultimate acquittal of Frank.
Someone else has also commented that this is one of the first tabloid- appeal crime stories of New York City - which makes it doubly interesting.
    Hoping to see many more!

She was born at least a century if not more too early as there were no opportunities for young ladies of working class other than the establishment she joined. Have you ever heard the story of the Butterbox babies from here in Nova Scotia?
It's a sad story and definitely a case my great grandmother and old folks of those days will never forget. 🗞 The newspapers and archive's should still be in Halifax at its centre.
Maybe someday I see it on
      "The Next Brief Case! "

Damn this channel!! I love history, and my favorite thing to research is the American Civil War. I've spent hours on hours on that topic. And almost as much time just looking at photos taken in the 19th century...its kinda my favorite era I guess.
NEVER have I been interested in stories about murder. Not in modern times or the 1800s. The topic had always bothered me because its obviously just a horrible thing. Yet somehow, I stumbled across this channel a few days ago and it has SEVERELY sucked me down its rabbit hole and I've watched so many videos already. I've even subbed to it lol
    Well done man 👏👏👏

You know it's a DANG shame homegirl didn't get justice because of what her profession was. Those same hypocrites who visited that establishment were probably on the jury...not cool...not cool ☹️

Not a profession. Do not attempt to make prostitution legitimate; it destroys womens' lives and debases society.

I love New York but it saddens me that from 1834 to 2024 and New York is still a difficult place to live unless you are born into money or able to land a larger than life job. May this woman find peace in the afterlife 🕊️ no matter what she named herself.

What Helen needed in her teen years, more than a job and an education, was a loving mother. For all the exposure to a finer level of society, Helen was left to herself and made unwise choices that led to a risky life.

I'm not understanding the not guilty verdict. Was it Helen's social position that denied her justice? The cigar alibi. Flamboyant illustrations are remarkable and transporting. Thanks BC.

What a miserable fate for an intelligent, lovely woman. Tragic indeed. The sad old story of women's lives worth nothing once they broke the moral code - often their only option.

Nothing good ever comes of threatening one's heart's desire to stay and commit to a relationship. This one was doomed for sure but Mr Robinson made sure of it. Funny how the word of a prostitute cannot be trusted in court but the men who cheat and lie to their families to visit one are apparently the respectable ones whose word must be taken as truth. Good story, Brief Case. Thank you!!
