If you land on the Navajo reservation you're fine. I work all over the reservation, automating and retrofitting their water systems. You won't get fined, confiscated, etc. As a matter of fact there are so few police out there that when I got hit head on it took north of two and a half hours for any type of emergency services to arrive. The only issues you'll have is with particular individuals. And it doesn't matter how nice or respectful you are, those particular people are gonna be pissed at you because they are pissed off at the world and unhappy with themselves. Besides, most people are just in awe when the see a paramotor ripping around.

Trust me when I say that it's a long journey, I've worked on a construction site in the rain, I've worked from 6:00am to 4:00pm on a farm, I took some pretty shitty jobs to save money. The whole time I've just been looking up at the sky and taking comfort in the fact that one day I WILL be up there with the clouds.

At Aviator in Lake Wales, lots of students subconsciously avoid the runways when taking off from the grass, so much so that they tend to sit too early to avoid touching them with their feet on takeoff. I've admittedly done it. That's when Fletch chimes in with "the runway isn't lava!" and everyone laughs. 😆

Maybe you could plan for the next time to talk to the tribal council (or whatever the local gov't is called), and bring the trike and offer to give some of the tribe members a ride. Turns the situation from "There's some yahoo going buzzing around again." to "You know what, that sounds fun!" Then you could get some positive P.R. while doing outreach for the motorsport and get permission to fly on the tribal land. Definitely a plan-ahead kind of thing to work out, but I think you're clever like that.
The friendliness of the lady in the car seems like such could be an opportunity on a later trip out west.

My grandfather was native American and though there are many "Americanized Native Americans" there are still a lot elders that believe their land is sacred and we should respect that. On my travels west I found a few signs that marked native land that validated your statements of they may take all your possessions. I'm hopeful that is more of a deterrent then reality, but hard to say. Thanks for representing the sport so well - all of you!

Yeah some of the native tribes around NM are really aggressive towards us PGs and many of the old timers that fly here have been chased off land ar gun point when they were forced to land on native land, we've also lost flying sites when the state handed over heritage lands to the tribes, the local flying clubs would negotiate with the state and tribes to allow us continued us of the flying sites but as soon as the tribes got control of the land they reneged on the deals and banned all flying. We still have people get chased off land (not even private or native) at gun point after having to land, there are some wackos out here in the SW. Heck where I learned to fly out in the desert we would sometimes fly over areas that were used as unofficial gun ranges and you just had to hope they weren't shooting skeet. Haha

You had that happen on BLM land? I would call the sheriff had someone once do that we were rock hunting drove back to the highway called sheriff deputy showed up he followed us back. The guy was arrested for brandishing firearm he was desert hermit living in a tent deputy said not suppose to be camping more then 14 days up there. He turned out to be a felon wasn't even suppose to have a gun. I got a letter about testifying but never heard back I think he took a plea deal. We were armed also but best to just leave and let Law Enforcement deal with people like that. BLM land is overcrowded now I'm in the Prescott area of Arizona so many people now with UTV's, and guns trashing the deserts here in Arizona. I bought my own private land 100 acers up in the Kingman area so we would have somewhere we can go keep those idiots away in the future. I wish I bought more land only about 15 years ago could 1000 acres of dry desert land for less then 50k. Having private land to take off from and land would be a good option for you.

@@Mike-01234 I wasn't there but apparently the guy on public land tried to attack the guys with a shovel, he snuck up behind them and swung it at the back of one of their heads but their bag caught the shovel. Then he threatened them then went and got his gun and kept threatening to shoot them till they left "his land" (they were walking on a public access road). They reported it to the cops when they got back to the car (no cell service where they landed) but knowing how incompetent the cops are in NM they probably won't do anything.

This was not the reason I expected for "DO NOT Land Out Here." I figured it was because of all the cacti, agave, Joshua trees and everything else that's thorny in the desert. Some of this stuff is absolutely vicious and I speak from a personal encounter with a spine from a Joshua tree that I accidentally touched while walking past. I can't imagine how much damage it would do to have a motor failure and have to land at running speed in completely undeveloped desert land. The vegetation would rip you up AND ruin your parachute. I suspect those problems would be a lot more serious than problems with the Navajo tribe.
