Indonesian movies from the 70s and 80s are a genre unto themselves, though Mystics of Bali is probably the most famous. That said, a look at the recent Indonesian superhero movies (starting with Gundala) would also just genuinely be interesting.
I noticed Salman Khan in the beginning of the video and his recent movies are actually interesting case of lazy bad movies. Since you also talked about star culture, it would be nice if you could dive deeper into star culture in India. In fact, star culture is the only reason how we still see mega budget bad movies like every couple of months because these people didn't care to spend on story/script and were sure that movie might work because of huge following of certain actor. Good thing is here in India (especially after popularisation of streaming platform), people are familiar with wide variety of cinema now so now bad movies are being rejected more and more. Race 3 (Salman starrer) is considered one of the worst movies of recent times especially considering Race 1/2 were liked by majority of people.
Also all recent bad movies of Salman Khan can be summarised as - He's basically doing it as a charity for unemployed people he knows to give them work including directors. He's not as such a bad actor if you notice his previous filmography or even latest release Tiger 3 but it's just that he doesn't put much efforts in former category movies and nobody around him is going to tell him to do it (he's too big for someone to point out error to him).
I remember when Sulli (principal actress, and also an idol) received backlash for saying that she couldn't understand the script. People called her dumb and unprofessional, but when the film screened it was clear that she was right.

on the oversexualization of idols: it is harmful but i would also argue it's ineffective. we don't want to see a man trying to be sexy for 2 hours, that has the opposite results. for a man to be attractive they need to give him heart and grit and personality. john wick wasn't perfectly coiffed when fighting, we don't want gratuitus shots of perfect abs. even though the oversexualization is not a tenth of what women face, especially in the k-idol industry, it's still sad that it leads to shittier movies you forget immediately
I think one of the best Kim Soo Hyun's movies is "Secretly, Greatly" where he plays an undercover spy from North Korea, and he gradually forgets his identity.
I couldnt finish this movie back when it came out. I was excited for Soohyun (who was booming at the time this was released) and Sulli (who was beloved Kpop idol), but I kept cringing and had to stop watching.
I couldn't agree more. There have been a few movies/shows that were ego exploitation in Korean films. Whenever I see them right away I quickly change what I'm trying to watch.
In the Philippines there is this popular fantasy franchise called Enteng Kabisote that swept the box office every christmas during the 2000s until it eventually fell off hard in the 2010s. Within that time it also had a bunch of crossovers with other properties for no discernible reason.
Well, Soo Hyun has been in amazing movies, being in an awful one is not something he needs to worry about. He is known for being amazing, and sometimes actors do projects that fail, That goes with the job, being an actor is risky
Kim Soohyun is a very worshipped Korean celebrity across Asia. I remembered my friends and colleagues paying $300 just to watch him talk, cook, mop the floor (everything on the stage), generally being a cute husbando giving all the fujoshi audience the fantasy of being in a quite intimate domestic setting with such a dreamy pretty boy. This movie is nothing but predictable East Asian character worship - making Kim the center of attention, putting him in the edgiest scenes and setting as much as possible. It appeals more to senses than minds. Kind of like a bad movie compilation you submit for an audition application. Oi Hollywood, here is Asia's next übercool star! Pls pls pls pls pls cast him in your next blockbuster!
When you said, "Harambe," did you secretly mean A*P*E? Or rather the title that I preferred, "Attack of the Giant Horny Gorilla?" If you did, then you got to slam two awful SK films at the same time. Best part for me was the, "It's 2am and I'm motion tracking his ass." That had me rolling. And on a more serious note, there is one thing I have noticed with the influx of idols into film. It is really hard to take the majority of them seriously as tough badasses. I keep expecting them to say, "not in the face! not in the face!" during every fight.
In terms of selling heartthrobs to another genre, VIP and The Childe so far has been the only successful attempts to it. Seen this and I was never convinced by it that Kim Soohyun has acting range beyond his usual. Edit: late realization that both VIP and The Childe were both directed by Park Hoon-jung, who also wrote I Saw The Devil.
Soo hyun is the highest paid actor in SK… I don’t know him beside his amazing work in “it’s okay not to be okay”. So I won’t judge him for whatever this movie is 😂
just my opinion but i think they wanted to give him the yim siwan treatment. him playing serious characters after being the "cute guy" to open up more chances in the industry - it worked perfectly for yim siwan because the producers and the actors are actually serious ABOUT THE STORY. as you said in Real they focused way more on his looks than actually on portraying the characters. yim siwan for example is a "pretty" boy aswell but he is not afraid to get sweaty and dirty and make "ugly" faces in his roles - which was obviously not favoured in the production of Real. :/ I really like the concept of the movie but it feels like a waste to create it in this way..
a movie about a hot guy being hot. i dont see the problem. when a movie exists and its not for me (sports, horror, war, cars, robits) i just ignore them and forget they exist. thats for THEM, not for me. but a film where i can see beautiful visuals, art, dancing, fighting choreo and a guy as hot as soo hyun? NAKED??????? let me grab my water and plantains, im ready for the SHOW!
I'd like to see your take on Kim Soo-Hyun's other roles, particularly a film like Secretly, Greatly where he gets to do a bit more than just look pretty.
As a Brit I can't wait to see what your British pick will be. There are so many candidates: Confessions of a Window Cleaner, On the Buses, Keith Lemon: The Movie, Konga, Fat Slags, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Love Bite, the filmographies of Danny Dyer, Paul Tanter, and Richard John Taylor, the list is endless.
I don’t think KSH needs to worry at all about this film. He is a great actor and this film does showcase he can do action and he can play (and look like) a villain. He dances, sings, can act and do physically demanding scenes and he’s incredibly good looking. Yeah he will be just fine. I have a feeling Hollywood will come calling soon enough if he can speak English.
Even when I was young and far more unsophisticated with my enjoyment of entertainment, I was never into stardoms. I never watched films and TV shows solely for the actors. I was purely interested in the premises and stories. Now, I still have that attitude. The only difference is my adult self has favourite film directors. I have yet to get starstruck by actors. Yes, I do acknowledge that some actors are better than the others. But, there are many actors who can give great performances. Even the best actors don't always give good ones. And let's not pretend getting starstruck is all about admiring talents. Quentin Tarantino criticised Marvel films for killing movie stars. From all things to criticise about Marvel, that's what he chooses to criticises? It is obvious that Tarantino is not opposed to excessive commercialism in general. He is opposed to Marvel film's because it supposedly kills the star system.
i think the purpose of this movie is showing how Kim Soo-hyun good at acting and showing his talents so that many directors see it and give him an opportunity and projects 😆.
If you want to subject yourself to some bad movies, KK Dheeraj, founder of K2K Production, is an infamous movie producer in Indonesia known for his low-budget horror movies, where one of the main selling points is inviting p-stars from the US and Japan. My favorite "controversy" from them is when they advertise a movie with Mr. Bean in the title. You can watch all of his bad movies on the K2K Production RUclips channel. KK Dheeraj still produces movies under his new film studio, Dee Company. And still produce horror movies, just less sexual and less bad.
For me I love this movie Real shows us his ability of acting . Most of the actor keep their looks cool and smart but for Soo Hyun he is the real actor who doesn’t mind his image as long as he can portrays the character he plays. Love and support.
Watching this, I am struck by one thing, this wasn't created for a story so much as an esthetic. Which is too bad, because there are films that do both well. The esthetic is striking, so props there
By your summary, the movie reminds me of 'Rocky Handsome', which was just an excuse to show off John Abraham. The original movie, 'The Man From Knowhere', was a great South Korean film though.
Oh my lord, I wondered what happened to Kim Soo Hyun after My Love From the Stars!! His social media only had three pictures and they all referenced this movie for at least 5 years.
It was like a pbs channel director finally got his agent ( or cousin..) to connect him to a cj entertainment producer. It has the soap opera way without the heart and the big movie budget without the strong narrative to justify watching how it will all play out. There are quite a few Korean movies like this but this time too many big names were attached to not also fly under the radar.

its so weird too that they're trying to make him sexy. KSH is sexy just being himself lol he's total eye candy with tons of female gaze. anyhoo....ksh was never and idol and never will be an idol. he is an actor. theater trained actor at that. please don't confuse the two.
Real is one of those "overstylized" movies, that its sole purpose was more to fulfil the filmmaker's ego than to entertain the audience. It tried too hard to look cool but with no substance. And you are definitely right. Kim Soo Hyun is one of the most promising actors in SK. He has range. He's versatile. And he's one who aren't afraid to break boundary (I guess that was Real intended to be, sadly a tad too much). And TBH Real affected his career quite much. After military mandatory, he's just not the same celebrity. It's rough to have one bad movie just before going to MM, cuz that means you would not be missed.
Not a purely bad film per se, but if you want a bizarre movie from Canada, I'd check out Weirdsville (2007). It includes a guy using a curling rock to beat someone up, so it's pretty unabashedly Canadian.
Believe me, I once had a dream like this movie before. Somehow I ride my wonder electric Harley bike and drove it to somewhere I don't know. I met a girl and I married her and had some children. But funny thing is in some moment in the dream I feel like I watching someone life and I kinda witness their live very close and then somehow I upset and I drove my wonder bike again and flee from those unknown area to another unfamiliar place. Then I stuck in some abandoned terminal and there I woke up for real 😎 Some moment in my dream mostly a fast ride with motorbike and enjoying twilight.

Hot take: the problem is not oversexualization but rather idol culture itself.
It melts people's brain until they live in fantasyland.
@@LynnHermione I'm sorry, Hermione... what the hell are you talking about???
I think one of the best Kim Soo Hyun's movies is "Secretly, Greatly" where he plays an undercover spy from North Korea, and he gradually forgets his identity.
I tried watching this once, but the plot was so confusing that I thought I had just found a bad translation of it. Glad to know it was just the film.
I couldnt finish this movie back when it came out. I was excited for Soohyun (who was booming at the time this was released) and Sulli (who was beloved Kpop idol), but I kept cringing and had to stop watching.
It sounds like real is a music video trying to be a movie.
Basically like Moonwalker.
He is known for being amazing, and sometimes actors do projects that fail, That goes with the job, being an actor is risky
the director is the main lead's cousin and CEO of his current agency. basically, the Nepo guys want to waste his cousin's money and ruin his image.
Not just Korean, but one of the worst movie I have ever seen. Somehow I can't believe I pushed through to watch the whole damn thing.
XD "It's 2 AM and I'm motion tracking his ass" great thoughts as always!
Kim Soo Hyun shows his acting prowess better in the drama 'Its okay not to be Okay'. I'd highly recommend it.
Every time the camera pans left to right - One more dude comes in for a group hug!!😂😂😂
He’s not an idol and actually is a capable actor, the movie is bad but that’s due to the script, not his abilities
The "...or good ass." had me in stitches!!! 😭💀💀
i had the dubious honour of watching this in cinemas in korea in 2017. It was a wild ride and a shared experience among everyone present hahahha
a movie about a hot guy being hot. i dont see the problem. when a movie exists and its not for me (sports, horror, war, cars, robits) i just ignore them and forget they exist. thats for THEM, not for me. but a film where i can see beautiful visuals, art, dancing, fighting choreo and a guy as hot as soo hyun?
"The dose makes the poison" is one of the best things I think I've ever heard in my life.
He is opposed to Marvel film's because it supposedly kills the star system.
yea the idol system when it comes to their entertainment business is such dystopian
Great video! I hope you do more tokusatsu and Japanese V-Cinema
Agree! Time to look back at childhood memories
i think the purpose of this movie is showing how Kim Soo-hyun good at acting and showing his talents so that many directors see it and give him an opportunity and projects 😆.
So excited for this series!
Kk Dheeraj has improved somewhat.
I get the vibe of "I just saw a Nicolas Winding Refn movie and I can do that for this guy"
“It’s 2am and I’m motionless-tracking this ass”😂😂😂😂
For me I love this movie Real shows us his ability of acting . Most of the actor keep their looks cool and smart but for Soo Hyun he is the real actor who doesn’t mind his image as long as he can portrays the character he plays. Love and support.
Watching this, I am struck by one thing, this wasn't created for a story so much as an esthetic. Which is too bad, because there are films that do both well. The esthetic is striking, so props there
R.I.P. CHOI JIN-RI [AKA SULLI] FROM THE K-POP GIRL GROUP f(x), SHE WILL BE MISSED. 🇰🇷💔🎬🎥😇🙏😢😭
By your summary, the movie reminds me of 'Rocky Handsome', which was just an excuse to show off John Abraham.
The original movie, 'The Man From Knowhere', was a great South Korean film though.
아이고 우리 리얼 해외진출하면 안되는데
I wish I saw Yang's facial expression when he tried to understand the movie but got confused instead...that would have been funnier
RIP Sulli.
I watched this about 2-3 times trying to sincerely understand what the hell was going on.
A shame as they are great actors, the movie was just off
omg i can’t believe a video essay is being done on this movie. i remember watching this and seeing how much everybody gave sulli for this movie it was so unnecessary!
There are a lot of cringe kflix right now as well. most of the films or series have either too much dialogue or staring at space.
great movie, also I hate how you brought up the similarity of the Hollywood star system is to the Kpop idol system. I was thinking the same thing for a while lol happy to see that I'm not the only person who thought that. People who care about the Golden Age of Hollywood and Kpop don't always overlap
Honestly, I loved this movie. It took me about 5 watches before I started to understand and even now I still don’t get all of it and that’s why I love.
i tried watching this movie after watching few youtube shorts edits from this movie but immediately dropped it after first scene because this actor took off all his clothes, i can't watch this brilliant actor in such type of role
I've watched so many terrible, terrible Korean movies, but I guess I'm lucky that this isn't one of them. But now that you pointed out just how it is bad, I'm interested in seeing the madness myself.
Honestly, comparing this movie to ma dong seok movie is just unfair, ma dong seok is much more experienced and better action movie actor
It ain't Real, it's Surreal...
its so weird too that they're trying to make him sexy.
Accented Cinema missed what is the most accurate comparison for this…the Elvis Movie
I want to see more of you review and criticize bad movies from all over Asia.
So back to the movie....... I literally screamed out, why!!!!!
5:19 when your mom says she'll slap you into next Wednesday 🤣🤣🤣
Great start to Accented Cinema's Bad Movie World Tour
This is the strangest Soohyun performance I have ever seen.
Please do a review of really awful Japanese movies like Devilman 2004
But it's pretty good
Oh hi Mark!
Oh I am going to LOVE this series.
Looks like a fan fiction film
It's that "it's so deep" movie 🤣
Ohh, I look forward to the series
These are probably the same people who'll watch Salo by Pasolini and say it has no artistic merrit. EVEN THOUGH its based of a classic in literature. The 120 days of sodom by The Marquis de Sade (he's where the word Sadism comes from) watch Salo and look at how Sterile the film is yet it delivers its message perfectly. Absolute power corrupts Absolutely.
"Inject this movie into my veins!" Would that help us understand the plot though?
like a Ego-plotation movie , but with more budget
I honestly think this is the acting reel for the actor portfolio!
where can i watch this movie?
Insightful comentary.
I love the actor but , what the hell is that movie?
Also, it's very true on the oversexualization, I personally hate when they oversexualize idols in general.
it is really bad what writer was thinking
if they were going to make what was essentially a fan service film... should have just made it that, rather than attach a hard to follow, non-sensical story.
A straight forward "bad-ass"/sexy/perfectionist story would've just been fine.
Devilman/Devilmaso when?
I hope to see Race 3 analysis.
