Yet another one whom Angelina has put a spell on. I just love it. 😀
I very much enjoyed your reaction: so much knowledge, perception, analysis and, above all that, empathy and sensitivity... Truly remarkable.
Angelina wrote the entire arrangement for this song at that age.
Her first recording goes back to when she was 1 1/2 years old -- a very brief one, admittedly, but still... Then the next one I know of was in a studio with Angelina being 6 yo, performing "I who have nothing" and filmed by her grandma. You simply need to listen to the four performances (in chronological order) she gave at "Norway's got Talent". This contest started when she was 7 and came to a conclusion when she was 8. You can literally watch her vocal and personal (and dental 🙃) evolution during this stage of her life -- quite fascinating.
'Truly looking forward to your next reactions!

What a superb reaction! I really enjoyed this even though I have heard Angelina sing this song so many times. Regarding your comments about learning from the greats even if you can't sing like them, Angelina was inspired by Billie Holiday, and if you listen to her rendering of I'm A Fool To Want You at the age of eleven I think you will agree she was already in a similar class. Today she is in a class of her own. I have subscribed and will be following your Angelina journey keenly.

I would do 2 tracks of reactions.
Using Rusty Shackelford's playlist 'Through the years.' 100 + videos from 6 yrs to 17 today.
1st From 6 yrs old onward and upward. Followed by all her performances on Norway's Got Talent each one individually with closed caption. Speaking Norwegian.
After that Fan favorites going forward from there. You don't have to do everyone. Her fans will know which one is most important for you next step.
2nd I would start with her recent performances starting with "Suspicious Minds' my first choice or Million Miles her first Release from Republic Records age 14 thru today at 17. There are about a dozen or more so you can do every one of them. And she is adding that frequently in recent Angelina's Journey. When you are caught up with her recent releases you can work your way backwards until you meet in the middle and then you can go back and start going through the ones you missed one at a time. 🔥🔥🔥♥👣

And, at the age of 9, Angelina made her own arrangement based on his original. I really, really appreciate your analysis of this song and singer and love the knowledge you share, and how inspirational your reaction is. I need to go to sleep, I'm not getting my words out correctly. Big hug to you and welcome to Angelina Jordan's journey. She has amazing lung capacity and diaphragm strength. Many "videos" available for angels are thanks to the persistence of her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani, who was herself a child prodigy, though not in music. A lot of them are spontaneous first-take sessions, practice, rehearsals, as well as performances. There are some good public performance videos in the register, also. I'm sure the angels who have been around longer than I have will fill you in. I'm so glad to find a reactor equal to the challenge of Angelina Jordan. She is, indeed, a Master and an incredible heart-full human being. Grandma Ellen, out.

The earliest recorded performance of Angelina singing is when she was eighteen months old. She is sitting in her crib, microphone in hand, and covering a Whitney Huston song. The most incredible aspect of her performance is the fact that she is a Norwegian citizen, singing in English at a time when the vast majority of eighteen month old children are just beginning to speak there first words.

All of Angelina's songs in chronological order?!?! Dear God! You'd die of old age! Angelina sings. In the house, in the shower, in the car, on the street, in the parking garage (she could put together an album of Tik Tok songs from the car park) She sings everywhere. Try this, Her favorite song is "Fly Me to the Moon". You can track her growing up with that song, renditions exist from age 8 to now at 17. Also Whitney Houston songs, the earliest one of those Angelina was one and one half. As for other singers equal to the ones you mentioned (can you imagine a Christmas choir with that bunch? Wow!) Aurora. Aurora Aksnes from Drange village in the Os district of Norway. She is a massive superstar that headlines music festivals with 50,000 or more people at them, and there's a reason for it. She is, quite literally, a fairy from the Land of Oz👣

I'm not even a minute into your reaction/analysis, and I'm already wanting the next one you do to be her live rendition of "Feeling Good" on a charity-related TV special called _The Stream Gir Tilbake_ at age 10 (found on her Official channel). It's more or less midway between the two you've already heard, in terms of both her vocal maturity and the style/feeling of the song. Like "Bohemian Rhapsody", it was performed live in front of an audience, but unlike that one, it was (AFAICT, based on a couple of articles promoting the show) actually _broadcast_ live.

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the vocal arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version and communicated to the band how she wanted it to be played - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with some of the same band members at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. The first thing she says is that she wants to start, followed by her saying she wants to start over, later she tells the pianist that the key is too low and that she wants to raise it a half-tone, then at the end of the song she changes the ending on the fly. The spoken language is Norwegian: ruclips.net/video/80f3t3dmBbk/видео.html

This was Angelina's arrangement. You've seen her making some last minute changes to which the conductor smiled. The video was shot by her grandmother from outside the recording studio. So they didn't really change the location, but Angelina did the first and last parts in a recording booth, and in the middle she was with the band. As for the list from age 9 onwards, I can give you hints as you look up her cover channel and you make your pick: If you see her with a blond guitarist or the sign TV in a corner, it means she was still in Norway and under 12. She also sang in public (something's got a hold on me at age 10 to 12 (It's a man's world : James Brown cover). At 12, Angelina moved with her family to the US because she was told there was nothing else they could teach her iin norway that she didn't already know. All the videos you will see are when she was over 12 y-o. Recommendations: Feeling Good on TV 2 (10-y-o), It's a man's world shot by a fan on smartphone, Stay (Rihanna), Born to die (Lana Del Rey), Always on my mind (Elvis), I have nothing (Withney Houston), Shield (original at 12), Million miles (original), You make me feel so young (F. Sinatra), and a couple of hundred songs as well. Enjoy!

A barefoot princess with a hypnotic voice.
Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman.
Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on RUclips. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz.
Mery Zamani is Iranian and was a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage.
Why Angelina always performs barefoot At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate.
At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. PLEASE PURCHASE Angelina’s book from her merchandise store on her official website, angelinajordanofficial Angelina, at age 6 and 7, did record a few songs in a recording studio at her school, most notably “I Who Have Nothing”, a truly remarkable performance for a 7 year old. At age 7, Angelina’s audition on Norway’s Got Talent, was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried. Angelina had turned 8 years old for her next performance on NGT, covering Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition and was not performed in front of an audience. In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them. In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists. When asked what she would like to do with the prize money she won (500,000 kroner or about $80,000), Angelina replied, “I want to give it to the poor children”. Angelina had become a star in her native Norway and her videos on RUclips went viral. She gave a few concerts during the summer of 2014 while 8 years old. In December 2014, Angelina realized a life-long desire to sing at the Save the Children's Peace Prize Celebration which is part of the Noble Peace Prize celebration. Angelina’s family took her to United States, Brazil, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Russia, South Korea, Singapore among other corners of Earth, to perform for heads of state and to help raise money for charity. All before Angelina turned 14. At age 9, Angelina recorded a music video covering the 1956 Jay Hawkin’s classic, “I Put a Spell On You”. The video begins by showing Angelina writing her “wishes” for how she wants to perform the song. Angelina has always created her own arrangements for her cover songs. At age 10 and just a week before her 11th birthday, Angelina recorded a demo of “I’m Still Holding Out for You”. Her family never pursued having that recording officially released but someone leaked it on a RUclips video. Thankfully, everyone involved with that song is now ok with the leaked version. Many angels (fans) believe this is one of Angelina’s best performances. When Angelina was 11, she performed a number of concerts in Norway with a jazz/rock band. Those concerts included up to 14 songs, each remarkably performed. Angelina seems to be at her best when on stage, never nervous, only 100% confident. Also at age 11, Angelina recorded her “It’s Magic” album which has, at times, been in the top 10 best selling jazz albums. On June 27, 2018, at age 12, Jordan performed Frank Sinatra “Fly Me to the Moon” for Quincy Jones in The O2 Arena in London. She has said that was the high point of her young career which was already in it’s 6th year. During 2018, Angelina lost her paternal grandfather, her friend Avicii and one of her idols, Aretha Franklin. She did a moving tribute for each. In 2019, Angelina accepted an invitation to compete in the 2nd season of America’s Got Talent (AGT), The Champions. She had, since age 3, wanted to perform for Simon Cowell and she earned his praise with her genius arrangement of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The surviving members of Queen loved it so much they put a link to it on their Twitter. Angelina was eliminated after covering Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”. Angelina’s family refused to sign any agreement with AGT. Angelina, before age 14, had covered more than 130 songs from 80 different artists, spanning at least 8 genres, all of which are available on RUclips. Angelina has always made changes to each song she covers and often her version is preferred over the original. On RUclips, search on The Complete Works of Angelina Jordan as Rusty Shackleford has put all songs in one file and has a complete playlist in the description of that video. The pandemic hit shortly after her performances on AGT and likely caused a change of plans by her family, most notably her Uncle Michael who is her manager. Her family agreed to a contract with Republic Records in August 2020. Republic Records declared Angelina Jordan their highest priority new artist. Reportedly her family requested Republic to allow her as normal a childhood as possible and therefore have yet to fully promote her. During the pandemic, Angelina was often seen buying meals for the homeless on the streets of Los Angeles. In November 2020, Angelina released “Million Miles” which she wrote after the passing of her beloved maternal grandfather. She dedicated the song to anyone who has ever lost a loved one. Angelina had previously released, 3 other original songs: “What is Life”, “Oslo” and “Shield” In April 2021, her original “7th Heaven” was released. A jazzy, danceable, inspiring song. Angelina has posted numerous short performances on Tik Tok and Instagram. Angelina had concerts in Norway in July 2022. In December 2022, Angelina performed at the Asian American Awards in Los Angeles. On 2/27/23, Angelina performed at the FIFA Awards ceremony in Paris, France, with a viewing audience in the millions. On May 5th, 2023, Angelina released her original "Love Don't Let Me Go". On July 23th she released her orginal EP “Old Enough”.
Angelina perform Concert at the Music Hall in Portsmouth New Hampshire on Sept 22nd, 2023. It Was a great concert, who was not and could regret it, a big mistake.
On 10/27/23 she released her new orginal singiel “Our Time”. On 12/08/23 she released new Christmas EP “Driving Home for Christmas”.

It’s great to hear someone so knowledgeable about music react to Angelina. Hard as it is to believe, you haven’t heard much yet-there’s so much more. What differentiates Angelina from the other amazing singers you mentioned is that she sings authentically in five or six completely different genres.
Many reactors think they will go chronologically, but that doesn’t work. With over 200 songs since age 7, it’s a musical feast that doesn’t depend on her age. Of course she’s a stronger singer now but her early stuff, like you just heard, will stun you, make you smile, make you cry, mesmerize you. Just dip in for a title you like-any age, any genre.

I can't even count any more how many reactions I've watched for this song. I really enjoyed your insightfulness. After the first time I saw this I watched every version I could find of Screaming Jay Hawkins singing it. I noticed that he had different nuances to each version. Some showed up more than once and some didn't. Angelina's arrangement managed to incorporate all of them in one cohesive performance. Not to mention that of all the myriad versions that have been done of this song since it first came out, Angelina is the only one who sings it in the same style as the original.
You can find a chronological list of her songs on Rusty Shackleford's youtube channel. And for raspy singers, check out Chris Stapleton.

As a vocal coach I think you will enjoy all the wonderful material that AJ has put out. Not only polished covers but also all the rehearsals and snippets where plays with vocal timbres and expressive techniques. She is not afraid to show experiments. In her finished work it always seem to serve the song and not become displays of technique. Because of this I find her music so moving. She gets to my heart like few othrr singers again and again. ❤

A very short chronological list to get you started. Age 7: (1st time is studio ) "I Who Have Nothing". Age 7-8, Norway's got Talent: Gloomy Sunday; I'm a Fool to Want You; Bang Bang; Summertime.
Age 8, TV Show The View: Fly Me to the Moon.
Then other standouts from ages 9-11: I'm still Holding Out For You; Feeling Good; It's a Man's World; etc, etc.
Angelina does brilliant covers of Adele, Lana Del Rey; Amy Winehouse; Etta James; Billie Holliday; Whitney Houston; Michael Jackson; and many more.

On the multiple takes; whatever happens visually, it is very rare that the audio is not one take. In the absence of multiple cameras, we rely on the artist to sing the same way on each of two or more takes to give editors the freedom to insert the best visuals. The more consistent the artist can be, the more choices are available to the editor. So, what can appear to be lip-syncing is sometimes actually editors syncing various camera angles or scenes to a single one-take audio track. No editor wants to splice together audio for a music video.

Carl, a british vocal coach discovered, that Angelina has a slightly bigger larynx then others. Nothing monstrous, every year kids are born like that, BUT combining it with intelligence, a magical ear for music and a godgiven patience, brings out tones, that are even on the key of Elvis P. No Joke. At 12 she sung a song of Elvis in the same key as the king.

Angelina has over 200 covers and 12 original songs on YT starting when she was 6. I would suggest that you check out Rusty Shackleford's RUclips channel He has every song she has done. He has a 'featured playlist section, one is every song but not in chronological order, rather by when they was posted on his channel, One is chronological order, but does not contain all the songs (do not know why). And the other list is her holiday music! As a fan since she was on Norway's Got Talent (and won) I do not think she has ever done a song that was not outstanding; but yes, many are masterpieces. I have tried many times to make a list starting with her songs at age 6 and making a list that I think is the best 3 or 4 for each year! I always get bogged down unable to decide which 3 or 4 for each year! This is the case for each age but especially true of her songs at age 10! Then there is the cases where she has done the same song multiple times such as Unchained Melody. She first did a short version at 9 on a TV show where she was interview about her book, Between Two Hearts, which is about why she does not wear shoes when performing, Then she did it at 10 or early 11. And now recently she has done it twice, once at what appears to have been a private performance, and on Sept. 22, 2023 during her sold out live concert in Portsmouth NH! Many of us that were there consider this performance her best performance of any song she has done! I personally consider it to have been the best performance of Unchained Melody ANYONE has ever done!

Most likely this is several takes as you can see some differences when she’s in the recording booth. The portion of her at the stand up mic could be her lip syncing to the playback.
However shortly after this she was known for doing her vocals in one take. Her homemade videos with just a guitarist are one take performances without rehearsal . (Guitarist Ivan Mendez said the only time they did a retake was if he messed up)
Obviously in songs where she also provides her own backing, harmony or overlapping vocals another take(s) would be needed. But primarily she is a one take performer. That may still be true with her new music.

There are many great performances before age 9. I suggest you check out her 4 Norways Got Talent performances. She was 7 at the audition and turned 8 during the competition. You're right. It was an insane and honest reaction. It is often said that she swore she wouldn't wear shoes to perform until all the children had shoes. But that's not correct. She herself said that she doesn't wear shoes as a reminder of the orphan girl and at the same time to remember all the children who were not lucky in life. She wrote it down in her diary and published this when she was 9 in 2015 as a book. So she was the youngest author in Norway

As an alternative to the very long chronological playlist compiled by Rusty Shackleford that several people will be pointing you to, you might want to consider one of the playlists on my channel that I've compiled specifically for people who want to take a chronological approach to her stuff but don't want to spend forever catching up to "the present". These can be found on my "home" page, in the first section called "Angelina Jordan recommendations":
    * "Catch up with Angelina Jordan (a short chronology)" - 36 videos covering ages 7 through 16
    * "Damn, Girl! The Best of Angelina Jordan Volume 1" - 23 videos, 8 to 17
    * "Angelina Jordan: just one song per year" - 11 videos, 7 to 17
Although I had slightly different selection criteria in mind when I made these three lists, there is significant overlap between them. You can, I think, safely choose between the three simply based on the number of videos you want to go through in your "first pass" through her vast catalog.
(OBTW, there's another playlist in there called "The Many Voices of Angelina Jordan", which might sound like it's perfect for your purposes, but it's not. It's not ordered chronologically by her age and it has way too many videos for a "first pass" [59 of them]. It could be good choice for a _second_ pass through her stuff, though.)

I,love Angelina. Following her for years. As you told you want to study the masters. Their is someone who inspired Dimash when he was young. He learned a lot from her and sang together. This artist is a Belgian/Canadian singer with an Italian mother. Her name is Lara Fabian. She is one of the great femal voices and has great technique. She’s really wants to work as a didacticus and mentor but still tours as she is around 59 now. Dimash covered some of her originals and she wrote songs for him. Their is a beautiful concert on u tube and the internet ‘from Lara with Love’. All songs are great (also to study technique). Lara is well known in all parts of the world except. USA (has something to do with Céline as they say). Love from Belgium.

Great reaction to a vocal tour-de-force! This history-making performance is as unnerving as it is magnificent!! You've done it now. You have now completely fallen into the vortex of Angelina Jordan who arguably brings the most confident, versatile, seemingly effortless, and fearless vocal artistry found today (whether measured across artists, genres, or decades). You may think this an exaggeration but listen to a few more of her many performances (170+ covers plus original songs - all on YT) and you will see! She has been performing at a high level all over the world since age 8 when she won Norway's Got Talent singing Billie Holiday, Nancy Sinatra, and Gershwin. It is the rare singer that can, as Angelina has done, go from Queen to "Screamin" Jay Hawkins to Adele to Elvis to Whitney Houston to Michael Jackson to Etta James to James Brown to Amy Winehouse to the Beatles (and many others in between) and do them all justice!
If you want to hear music, listen to anyone. If you want to feel music, listen to Angelina. She will stagger you with her ability to find and bring forth the 'essence', the emotional message of nearly any song. You have far to go with Angelina. She is equally comfortable and equally able to impact us whether singing a cappella, accompanied only by a piano or guitar, in front of professional studio musicians or a 40-piece military band. With her immense vocal toolkit, arranging ability (yeah, that too, since about 8yo or so) and the work ethic to make what she does only 'seem' effortless, she will hopefully be touching hearts for a long time to come.
Why God has performed the miracle of touching the world with one of such talent, musical IQ, commitment, and generosity as Angelina we can wonder but we must all marvel. Welcome aboard the AJ train! Please react to more of her impressive library.

Another incredible singer is Daneliya Tulyeshova from Kazakhstan. Watch her sing "Stone Cold" when she was 10 years old on voice.kids. How can these kids sing this way??!! She's 17 now and still singing amazingly.

Go plug somewhere else. He'll find her on his own. Its nothing personal, but I've grown tired of people pulling this crap in the comment sections. Its rude.

Word Smith indeed! Wonderfully articulate, perceptive and knowledgeable analysis. Thanks!
AJ has around 200 videos including around 15 originals with a steady stream of new releases. On this one, I am impressed by her emotional maturity and sensitivity where she takes Jay's theatrical exuberance and transforms it into feelings aligned with the story; angst and anger against betrayal. So she not only relates emotionally but she can convincingly convey those feelings in a song. Of all those who have performed this song, she may be the only one who has done that while maintaining Jay's emotional intensity.

Hey Carl awesome analysis. However, if you go back and listen to the "squeal" again you'll find she actually did an inhaled scream. Way more impressive than a simple squeal. Meaning she could shape her throat to make the desired note.

I haven’t had that much fun watching a reaction in ages. The looks on your face expressed it all. And the way you discussed what she is doing was brilliant. Her voice ‘is’ from the 50’s & 60’s. It comes from influences like Screamin Jay here, Billie Holiday. her most cherished favorite influence, followed closely by Whitney Houston, Etta James. Elvis and on and on from there. Her voice developed from all these influences and she just understood it immediately. Musical Genius in my opinion. I have often said she has had a grasp of Music History few could match. For her it’s instinctual. Your explanations of her techniques were some of the best I have ever heard. So easy to understand. I appreciate that.
That growling is the stuff of dreams. Music IQ off the charts. It’s next level. I’ve never heard it described that way and I’d say it fits her to a T. I'd start at 6 yrs old. 1st time in studio. 'I Who Have Nothing'

A masterclass from a 9 year old, and she is still giving them, Cakra (Chakra) Khan is definely worth a listen to, particularly his rendition of Tennessee Whisky. You may also want to listen to one of Dimash's icons, Lara Fabian, who along with Angelina, is a storyteller beyond compare
