This was an incredibly well created message! As a Black man, I am incredibly disappointed when others say that we are "claiming that the white man stole from us again." You see, with this rebuttal, these people place the blame for the UNTRUTHS told about Black men back onto Black men as if it's their responsibility to fix the problem; that way, it's all on the Black man, and no one else has to take responsibility for the roles they played in the damage. It's not about making a claim, it's about addressing the TRUTH and learning to make future decisions based on the TRUTH rather than a LIE that has been perpetrated on Black men our ENTIRE lives. Yet, we as Black men have continued to soldier on and rise above all of the lies and myths that have been told about us. I urge people to think on that the next time they fix their mouths to let such disrespect flow from their lips. Fantasy is what we want, but REALITY is what we as a society NEED in order to improve our human condition.
I agree that people should never be discriminated against based on their outward appearance, but most stereotypes exist bc the majority exhibit those traits. I'm glad to know that things are changing and black people want to rise up and overcome, but there are still many who give black men a bad name and are the reason why people prejudge a black man who dresses a certain way. However, it's no different than when people prejudge anyone who presents themselves a certain way.
Brandi Reeves: While I agree with you, I must also respectfully disagree with you. It "IS" different when a Black man is prejudged, and let me tell you why. When a Black man is prejudged, do you think he's going to get that job that he's interviewing for so he can support himself and his family? When a Black man is prejudged, do you think he's going to get that home loan approved so that he can have a safe place to protect and raise his family? When a Black man is prejudged, does that allow him the freedom to shop in any store without being suspected of stealing rather than paying for his items free and clear? The answer is NO. While I understand where you're coming from, I'm afraid that you may possibly have drank the juice and become disillusioned like so many others. Whether society wants to accept the reality or not, it IS different for a Black man in THIS country when he is prejudged. And until you have lived the life of a Black man, you have no grounds to speak on whether or not it's "different" for Black men. You can ONLY speak for yourself and what knowledge you have. But that's also a part of the problem because too many people like yourself choose to "not think about it" or rationalize it as if it's "no different." That's where the REAL problem lies because the mindset of people like yourself is blinded to the truth because it's not happening to YOU. When it happens to you, and ONLY when it happens to you, will you understand.
Unfortunately, I HAVE been prejudged before. I'm sure most people in the world have been for one reason or another. You're just unable to see it in any other perspective than your own. I know that some people specifically prejudge people simply by the color of their skin, but people also prejudge individuals based on their gender and other characteristics. There are people who would turn me down for a job not because I'm of any certain race, but simply because I'm a woman. They say black woman have it the hardest out here and I agree. While I'm not even more than 50% white by heritage, I do identify myself with the white race. However, I have been the victim of prejudice more times than I can count. So, don't tell me that it's not happening to me, because it has before and fairly certain that it will again. By the way, if you feel that someone didn't give you a job or loan due to your race, you should file a complaint about it. It's illegal for people to do that nowadays if you didn't know. There's this thing called equal rights. It applies to you if you live in America at least.
The thing is, every single person in this world judges every single person they meet from the minute they meet them. It's what we do. We may not do it intentionally or negatively, but we all think certain things about a person we've just met for one reason or another. That's why first impressions can be so valuable. I'm not saying that black people aren't discriminated against at all. That's not my point. My point is that all people are subject to discrimination from others for one reason or another. Where I grew up, white kids were the minority and blacks were the majority. Granted I had many black friends, there were also black kids that treated me harshly and called me names simply because I was different than them. Majority of them would call me Chinese although I'm not Chinese at all. I'm part Korean, but they didn't care. I don't think they were trying to be mean when they called me Chinese, but it was still insulting to my heritage. I've had homosexual white male friends who have been turned down for jobs and discriminated against simply because they were homosexual. I've been prejudged by law enforcement many times simply because of the car I was driving or neighborhood I was leaving. I stood on the side of the road in the cold for two hours one night so a police officer could search my car and then another police officer search my car and then a police dog get in my car all because I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and I didn't even get an "I'm sorry" or anything after they let me go. I may not be a black male, but I've experienced my share or discrimination. So, my point here is that black males aren't the only ones who fall victim to prejudice. It's becoming a part of life in a world that judges first and finds the truth later. Just think about how Muslims feel in America after 9/11 and know that you're not the only ones who get prejudged.
Brandi Reeves: Thank you for clearing that up for me Brandi, I believe I am beginning to understand your perspective a little better. You seem to have a very kind heart, and an open mind for understanding and that is important. I hold an Associate's degree in Education, a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Education. I'm well aware of the laws that govern this country, but I am also aware of the incredible damage that has been done to my people here and how its effects have been lasting; yes, even to this day - and YOUR people are benefiting because of those lasting effects. You see, the difference between you and me is that in THIS country, YOUR people were not stolen from their own country and brought here and made to dedicate their entire existence to the servitude of whites. YOUR people's dignity was not snatched away from them, and then disintegrated upon arrival to this country. YOUR people were not raped, beaten, killed and used as property to whites, MY people were. MY people were the victims of the world's "MOST COMPREHENSIVE ROBBERY" as has been written in the history books; and, YOUR people are STILL BENEFITING from that comprehensive robbery TO THIS DAY. Am I bitter about it? No, because it happened a long time ago and the past cannot be changed. However, I DO have the right to be bitter when because of what happened hundreds of years ago, MY people are STILL being effected by such an atrocity TODAY. BUT, I have to find ways to rechannel that anger, frustration and bitterness into positive ways of helping to educate MY people so that we can HEAL from this most detrimental practice of racism and evolve. So you got pulled over and searched, ONCE. If you're looking for an "I'm sorry," then here it is. However, try having to live with that kind of discomfort EACH AND EVERY DAY. Try living with the fact that despite all of my accomplishments, I'm still considered bottom on the totem pole in this country simply because of the color of my skin. I know, you ca't because you're NOT Black. That's why I said in my last post, you can ONLY speak to your OWN experience, but you DO NOT have the right to whitewash and minimize the experiences of others simply because you're trying to assuage your own guilt that racism in fact DOES look VERY different for each group in the US. Blacks ARE treated considerably worse in this country because of a system that was set in place MANY YEARS AGO to ensure that this TERRIBLE fact would be maintained. That, my dear friend, NO ONE can deny. When you walk out of your front door each day, you're a "white woman." When I walk out of my front door each day, I am a "Black man" and we BOTH have to deal with what that means in THIS society on a daily basis. That is an undeniable fact. What has happened to MY people in this country is NOT YOUR fault; but please, do not trivialize the suffering of my people, nor try to say that we ALL experience the SAME kind of mistreatment in this country because that would be both an incredible statement of injustice and untrue.
I loved this message. Truth is always a powerful deliverer! I really liked this video up until the end. Are we still blaming slavery for the ill behavior of some black men? Step up and take responsibility. How many generations has it been now? All I know is that I've never stolen anything from anyone and there's too much crime in the world in general for me not to lock my doors and hold my purse closer when I see ANYONE I don't know. My ancestors were too poor to own slaves! Plus, many slaves chose to stay where they were when slavery ended, because they were treated well and happy there. So, don't tell me not to be cautious or that I've stolen anything from anyone. We all have obstacles we must overcome. I applaud you for inspiring others, but don't place blame on another race because yours fell short. People judge white people who wear baggy clothes the same way. At least I know I do.
What privilege? I wasn't born with any privileges the I've been able to cash in on. I wish I was. Lord knows that'd make life easier. That's one of the problems these days. You think all white people are privileged and the truth is that we're not! Not all of us. Most are, but they're the ones with money and that fit into the norms of society. It's apparent that your view of slavery is biased, but I've read books written by black men who actually went through it. Yes, most are horrible and gruesome stories, but some were not. When you become more educated and don't present yourself with a username containing profanity, I'll take what you have to say into consideration a little more.
the simple fact your skin color has NEVER been criminalized, the simple fact you have a CHOICE to fight systematic white supremacy is PRIVILEGE. now you might not be as thoroughly educated on your privilege but the simple fact you can sit here and say what you know you don't have....your privilege is bigger than MONEY...and as far as the NAACP...that organization has never been for people of color or our best interest, much like affirmative action also...name one benefit black folks get from affirmative action or the NAACP lol you wont find one...I can present my username however i please that's what i choose to do and im accountable for all my actions...that's what education grants you. unless you've read Ivan Van Sertima, John Henrik Clarke, Neely Fuller or writers who paint the pictures of history in its truest form you are not getting the full story...im sure you've read some Dubois...thats not even 1% of the black experience. Try reading the Marcus Mosiah Garvey anthology, Franz Fanon etc...then you might be able to somewhat understand the black experience in the america(s)

The only thing I'll say is that my generation has done nothing to you, so why hold the hate for what our ancestors did? You say he has wise words, but it's the same old argument. I will agree that people stereotype African Americans because of their skin color, but I can honestly say that I will lock my doors on a white man faster than any other race and I am white myself. Well, I'm more red most of the time, but I'm Caucasian. The only thing I ask EVERY ONE to remember is that white people fought just as hard and we're beaten and threatened just as much as black people when they fought to end slavery. You ask us not to judge, but you judge us just the same. Two wrongs don't make a right, they make a bigger problem.
bbeck223 .....Oh my god. The stupidity of this comment is outragaous....Do you know how many Black Kings and Queens died before SOME of yall stepped in? This comment was completely not thought out and insensitive to our struggle back then and now...Im done. I aint got enough words for people like you.
"why hold the hate for what our ancestors did" because you guys still hold the benefits of what your ancestors did and we still bear the burden our ancestors had to deal with. And correction white people WERE NOT "beaten and threatened" or killed just as much as black people. For you to even state that is disgusting.
