5 Things I Never Buy For Fishing-Saltwater Tackle Tips For Beginners

  • If you are new to saltwater fishing here are some beginner tackle tips that will help you catch more fish and save more money. One of the most important things about fishing is presenting live bait and lures in natural ways.
    Buying pre-made fishing tackle almost always cost more money than when you make your own. Those cabled leaders that are assembled with bright colored beads, crimps, swivels and snaps are loaded with way too many things that don't look natural. Also, the snaps that are used for attaching the hooks to the leader are destined to fail if you hook into a really big fish. You will almost always be able to make a better leader with your own materials.
    These fishing tips for beginners include:
    1. Considering what type of bobber to use, weighted or not
    2. Saving money through making your own leaders. Hooks, swivels, weights and heavy monofilament or fluorocarbon leader can be purchased separately and assembled for significant savings
    3. Live bait is always better than the dead stuff, especially those dried out minnows and shrimp in the sporting goods departments
    4. Hunt around a department store for better prices on needle nose pliers. You will almost always find a much better price on them in a different area than the sporting goods department
    5. Snap swivels are not a good choice. If you need to attach a swivel to a lure use a snap ring
    Did you see that too, I spelled swivel wrong, oops. Oh well, the video was uploaded and published when I noticed it.

    I think when you are a newbie some of the pre-made rigs can help cut down on the confusion sometimes. then when you get to fishing even just a few days to a week can feel confident to move up on your own. fishing can be somewhat intimidating when just starting out. I know i was never so thankful for my late father-in-laws stuff. having something that was already ready for fishing helped cut down on my anxiety. Now i am learning to make my own rigs. I have been fishing regularly now for about two months now and I am about ready to move off of some store bought sibiki rigs to making my own. I am thankful for the store bought sibikies cuz it help me realize what i needed to look for.

      those pre-made rigs are the reason newbies catch less fish. While they may cut down on confusion, they raise frustration. Absolutely worthless, learn to tie your own rigs, it's like 5 minutes of watching youtube.

      @notsure7874 Год назад +2

      @@BeetleBuns I buy pomp rigs, but I know which ones to buy. I bought 3 goofy jigs rigged with leader and teaser and they're no different than I'd have tied. Same price, saves me some time to actually fish. The double drop loop pomp rigs - not much different from a chicken rig, but I don't usually have kahle hooks. Just easier for me to buy them here and there for 3 bucks.
      Granted - I'm buying them at the bait store, and I do agree sometimes like with that "snapper rig" - you're not catching much snapper on that. Not around here anyway.

    • @BeetleBuns

      @@notsure7874 yea you really gotta know what to look for... with high-low rigs especially, most of them just come with too much metal crap, too heavy of line, and too big of hooks. All those wires and swivels and shit are the reason the guy next to me doesn't catch shit while I'm running plain-jane mono rigs with a bead and hauling them in... you can buy good rigs, but you need to know which ones are made to catch fish and which ones are made to catch you. Reading my earlier comment makes me sound like a prick, I should have worded it less aggressively...

    • @notsure7874
      @notsure7874 Год назад +1

      @@BeetleBuns nah, I didn't take you wrong man, just sayin not all of them are worthless, just most of them. Almost all of them at wally world are worthless, especially those wire monstrosities.
      The pomp rigs I use are 10lb fluro, one coastlock at the bottom, one swivel at the top both appropriately sized. Either 2 or 3 2/0 kahle hooks in gold, chartreuse or pink floats either with or without beads. I get without, usually pink floats. They work friggin awesome, and for 3 bucks I'd have to make an awful lot of them for it to be worth my time. I might buy 10 of them / year, it'd take me more than 30 bucks worth of time just to buy the stuff, much less pay for it.
      There is a guy that makes them up north a bit - but he makes something like 3000 - 4000 of them and has a pegboard jig for getting the drop loops the same every time. The setup is pretty cool, I'd do it if I used those that much.

    I’ve never had a double drop rig snap on me and also I caught a huge bull red with one a while back. They make several kinds, you have to get the right one. The popping cork you picked up, those serve a purpose, they are meant to be adjustable/ don’t have to re-tie a knot when making adjustments on how deep or shallow the ocean is and how far you want your bait to dropdown.

The black ones on the first leader that are bent out keep that from being an issue, but it all comes down to checking the ratings when dealing with salt species or even catfish if your after large fish.

    Snap swivels are good for homade dropper rigs to put weights and change fast to another one I agree that tying directly into hooks and lures are a bad idea I personally think that beginners like them because you make 1 knot and you are done but manufacturers need to especially tell every items purpose and the reason why. Also I did not used lures but bought them just because then I stared using the spoon because I wanted to catch redfish then I started to catch a lot of fish (expect redfish) and currently is my favorite lure and I have caught ladyfish,whiting,Spanish mackerel and jack so I’m buying new ones to try them and I’m gaining trust on lures

      If you are using a fishfinder rig (sliding weight with a simple leader at the end) a snap swivel or "sinker slide" does well for that.
      But for rigs like the first premade rig he showed, a good end loop knot like the surgeon's loop or perfect loop knots are my go to's and achieve the same result.
      The only accessories i typically have on my premade rigs (i make all of my rigs... even snelled hooks) are barrel/ball bearing swivels, hooks, and (sometimes) small floats (think pompano rig floats or Lindy rig floats). As my situations change in my fishing areas, so too will my rig additions on my live bait rigs. I get inspirations all the time for different rigs to tie for different situations.
      Nowadays, i go in to local bait shops to see what the fish have been biting on to get live bait. But for all big box stores (like Walmart and bass pro shops) i go in mainly looking for terminal tackle to use for my forseeable fishing needs, and i get them in bulk as much as possible.

    Any good fisherman worth their salt should know how to make their own rigs without ever having to buy anything pre-made. Like u showed it can easily be done by buying individual components and putting all together plus you can customize it for whatever fish you want by changing test lb line or using mono/fluoro/braid and different oz weights and hook sizes and tying good knots you trust!!

    Those bobbers your talking about weighted or not, are very cheap and you can customize it to your own liking, especially if your looking for good casting distances for mac's or runners. Buying the ones that are already weighted are too light for casting into the wind.

    Stuff is OK and all have worked,(except the dried bait)for those who don't know how to make rigs, and there are very many people who don't or cant make them or people in a hurry as a once a year fishing.

    Prospecting equipment is the same if it has anything to do with prospecting it's more expensive and you can get things at a fraction of the price.
    I guess the equivalent to "catches fisherman but not fish", is "don't mine gold, sell shovels" lol.
    That said the local fish store to me, sold me a few of the premade line sets, with the words, never buy them again. Just use them as templates going forward. For someone who fishes not very often, it has been great advice. I might go once every 6-8 months, and so never really remember how to set each one up. But using the premades as a template works wonders.

    So when you say the extra things are you saying that floats and beads should not be on the line? I tie my own rigs but I generally put a bead and float on especially with the hi/lol whiting rig. Only been doing surf fishing for about a year. I started with the pre made stuff but have since transitioned to tying my own.

    What about a premade leader with clear line and a loop instead of a snap swivel??
    Im just trying to catch Mackerel and im thinking of using it when i run out of sabikis...

    • @RadReelingFishing

      Use a uni to uni knot to attach braid to mono leader. If you are using live bait with mackerel be sure to use a long shank hook too.

    I used to buy small white glow in the dark plastic minnows. I swear by these things and can't find them anywhere. I fish off a pier that has lights shining into the water to attract fish. I charge up the glow in the dark minnows and cast out with a couple of split shot BB sinkers to give it a lil weight and Bam, every time white or speckled trout. A small treble hook with only a small enough piece of market shrimp or cut bait to cover the barbs will work also, just not be seen as well as the glow bait. The whiter the flesh the better. If I catch baby trout they become catfish bait but this method also catches fine size eating trout.

    I use freshwater snap swivels for my sinker on my high low rig so if the sinker get snagged I can just break the swivel and not loose the whole liter

They quit selling the only lure that I actually liked that would catch fish also , if anyone knows where to get renegade/ renoski spoons , plz fill me in on that info , I gone to the wed sites to no avail and can't even get them to send me a catalog.

    • @RadReelingFishing
      @RadReelingFishing  4 года назад

      Thanks for watching. I'd ask a local who fishes that pier. It really depends on what you are fishing for and the amount of current you are dealing with. There are many factors involved in deciding how to rig. Is there a lot of current where you are fishing? What are you fishing for?

  • @sfopeace9877

    Bobbers without weight are for different type of fishing , You can used them while fishing in a rocky jetty or from a pier !

  • @georgeminor6256
    @georgeminor6256 4 года назад

    The orange and white BOBBERS are not bobbers at all they are agitators, they work as a popping rig and usually fished with a trailing leader with a lure to mimic bait fish hitting the top of the water swimming to avoid feeding fish. We use these all of the time during the white bass run and any fish that is chasing bait fish at the top of the water. The agitator is tied on as so the large mouth of the rig is coming towards the fisherman.

    I get what you were saying on the bobber but what if the bait they are using is already weighing it down. Wouldn't that be a good time to buy one? New saltwater fishing. Just asking.
