Did the manual expansion tank have a slot for the thermostat for the automatic e46?

Great DIY. Did a cooling system refresh on a 330ci auto last year. The fan clutch adds a magnitude of frustration and difficulty to the job. Theres a DIY on the forums for adjusting the buffer range on the cluster. May be worth looking into.

With regards to the drain plug, the whole thing comes out (use a 23 socket I think).
There are two different length plugs, the short one is for a manual and longer one for an automatic due to a pipe just above the drain plug going to the auto gearbox for cooling.

Job for this coming week. O-rings in radiator hoses went when i did thermostat and water pump. So check for leaks from yours dependant on age

You guys can just take the fan out first next time. I didn't touch my cooling system on my ZHP and removed it for belts and pullies. And the fan shroud is held in with the correct parts. Ones a torx and ones a push rivet.

I purchased a radiator and it's opposite from yours. The old radiator you have had a drain plug at the bottom of the radiator. Amd the new one didn't. And the radiator that's in my car right now (old one) doesn't have a drain plug, but the new one I just bought does have a drain plug. It's vice versa from yours, but I guess either way it works, as it worked for you guys.
Is your car an automatic? The automatics got different radiators than the manuals.
@@E39Source it's a manual. But I just figured out that the radiator that I bought can be used for both manual and automatic transmission
My e46 is manual and hasn’t been swapped it has a clutch fan and an electric fan

Great vid. I have an E46 fan that runs at only one slow speed.. whether the engine is cold or hot, even with the AC on. Is that a known failure of an aftermarket fan?
Hmm, this is a good question. Do you have any stored codes for a fault in one of the fan circuits?

Hey guys great DIY it has helped me out tremendously. I was able to replace my original rad today, it had 302000km on it and was leaking, I reused the same electric fan. As it was working perfectly, my issue is, my fan now will not turn on and as Im attempting to bleed my cad with the rad cap off, my car is over heating making a huge mess and the fan will still not turn on :(, I gave up working on it today and will return to the car tmo when it’s cold. I have left the rad cap off tn to see if it will gravity bleed it self or not. Any ideas of to why the fan won’t turn on ?
The original fan may just be caput. Inspect the wiring and connectors for damage. On mine, the smallest wire (signal wire) was broken. Bleeding the system is annoying, and sometimes I've had to rev the engine quite a bit to burp the air out of the water pump and nearby areas.

I advise anybody doing this job not to separate that tank from the bracket just remove the whole thing together only 2 t2 screws holding it. Reason its hard to take thst off is because it has sealed the oring from the heat You take it apart and it will leak it will never seal right again

This video will be helpful, yes. The E39 is very similar. Expansion tank is much easier to remove from the E39 compared to E46. No real difference between auto and manual for the E39 either.
does the bottom hole on overflow mounting bracket below torque head need a rubber?? it seems awfully loose.. or maybe supposed to be that way?
I don't remember specifically if there was something in there. There might be a little rubber grommet that would make things tighter... but as long as it doesn't fall out, it should be perfectly fine.

Did your radiator come all dinged up like that?? I got the same exact radiator in pristine condition for $48 lol not one fin out of place I really hope that was from you handling it not how it came
I've always gotten radiators with small areas bent like that, no harm.
Just a question. Have you ever changed the transmission or the power steering fluid? Or even the gearbox fluid? An answer would be very helpful. I have a bmw 325xi 2002 with114k miles.
I did the transmission, front differential, rear differential, and transfer case fluid in my 330xi shortly after I got it. It's cheap and easy, and will help those components last longer, and work better. I would recommend that you do it. Same with power steering fluid, coolant, brake fluid, etc etc.

The transfer case is separate from the transmission, so transmission type should not matter. @@cw988
