Taking My Ricoh GR On A Road Trip To The GRand Canyon - APS-C Pocket Landscape Camera

  • I took my Ricoh GR as my daily carry camera on a trip to the Grand Canyon. Or should I say, GRand Cany- okay, I'll stop. I am constantly impressed by the image quality and experience of shooting this camera. The filter adapter (Ricoh GH-3) and FlashQ Q20ii system are really inexpensive upgrades that enhance the camera quite a bit. Looking forward to even more fun with the camera in the future!

      As pocket camera... I have the olympus stylus 1s and the Nikon V1... Both are good enough for me, not better than a ricoh gr, and buckier. For more flexibility I prefer the stylus 1 but handling and image quality is for Nikon.
      I wish I buy the 18mm for my Xe1, so I can have a bigger sensor sized all around camera

      Around the world for almost 2 years with a GR Digital III back 09-11. I also had a K-7 and M50/1.4 with me, but it really didn't come out very often at all. That GR documented that time like nothing else could have (with the exception of 4 or 5 months that the lens assembly binded up cuz I got sand inside it on a beach in NZ... finally had it repair at a shop in Sydney for over half the price of the camera. But worth every penny.)

    I bought the Ricoh GRD I (8mp) in 2005-6. It was touted as the perfect secondary landscape camera. Wonderful camera. I've since bought the GR III, which is even better. Carry both with me as well as Nikon D610 full-frame (bought 2013). But the wonderful thing is that either of the Ricohs do the job without a back pack and tripod. Great video. Love your kids (speaking as a grandfather in the UK.)

    I bought my first Ricoh recently - a used but mint GR3. I come from a full frame (Canon 5D and Sony A7) background, although I have dabbled in the smaller format, principally the 4/3rds cameras, such as the OM-D and E-PL range, which I love. I have owned a Lumix LX5 for around 7 years and shot with it a lot, and I love it. But the GR3 is something else. I love it so much that I have also bought a used GR1 for £140 off Ebay. I want something that I absolutely will carry with me all of the time (I'm a bit precious about my GR3, at the moment). I also have the 21mm conversion for the GR3 and it is fantastic! Do not hesitate about buying it.

    I have the Fujifilm XF10. It goes with me everywhere, so I now take a lot more photos of just everyday stuff than I ever have before. It has the built in teleconverter to 'zoom in' to 35mm and 50mm focal lengths, which makes it so versatile. Yes, there is a slight drop in image quality, but at 24mp the quality is already so high, so I can hardly notice the difference. Very underrated Fuji camera. The only things I wish it had are two strap lugs instead of one to be able to attach a neck strap, and more than one customisable film simulation modes at a time. Otherwise, it's great! :-)

    I am more of a zoom shooter. So instead of gr, i carry its cousin gx200 in my car always. It is an older camera with 12 mpx. Iso above 200 is not good. However for day light pics, it is very handy and produce film-like images. BnW street photos from it are beautiful.
    My other compact camera is an Olympus E-pl8. It is small, affordable and there are many good lenses for it. I use the Lumix 20 mm F1.8 all the times and I love the results.

    I've made the same thing as you during a trip to Corsica, and I felt no frustration to have only this little camera. For the next trip I took my K3 and few lenses, and the GR missed me...
    I had the Ricoh gr with the wide angle converter, and I were happy with it. Happy enough to buy the converter for the Ricoh grIII I own now.
    I still have the gw3 because the new owner of my GR didn't want to add the price I asked but obviously I have no use for it !

  • @Fe_lix

    I have the GW-3 for my GRII for a long time now. When I have it under hand I shoot >50% of my pictures with it and love the results, such a nice focal to change the perspective and open new possible compositions.
    The caveat here is "when I have it under hand" as it's not always the case. First the GR with the 21mm on it lose all hope for discretion, it becomes bulky and front heavy, it does not fit anymore anywhere you are used to store it (pocket, xs bag, in the palm of your hand, etc.). If you want to alternate between 21 and 28mm it means somewhere under hand to store the lens.
    My setup with the 21mm is generally a Peak design Field Pouch that can carry the GR and the 21mm side by side quite well (and together possible but not ideal) but more and more I just take the GR in a pocket or replace the 21mm in the Pouch by a Leica IIIc (to have a digital and an analog camera in a small setup + 28mm and 50mm) so it sees less and less the light.
    I would put my money in a native 21mm digital GR.

    • @snappiness
      @snappiness  2 года назад

      Some native different focal length GRs would be awesome :) 40mm would do it for me!

      @@snappiness I definitely notice a jump in overall IQ due to the new lens and higher MP sensor. The ibis is awesome to use at night. I do a good amount of night shooting. I miss the flash and the exposure comp controls of the grii, along with the overall size. The griii is definitely smaller and if you have bigger hands you’ll need a thumb grip. I have seen 3D printed grip extensions that look legit. If you’re going to buy a new one I’d say leap for the griii because pricing for the grii’s has jumped ridiculously. You can find a used griii for $700 while used grii is going for $550++.

    Very simple setup and similar to how I travel with the GR, just I add the wide angle adapter as well the micro. Both are very good with very little distortion with the wide but I think that's a more of an issue with light room(easily fix) . Also you have to select the option in the camera's menu for the ext to be written that you're using either. With the GR iii that has become unnecessary. In addition to the CPL I also bring along a 10 stop ND for some great long exposures. Before the Wi-Fi version I would use a card reader and just put the memory card in and begin editing with snapseed on my phone.

    Somehow, your style of video production, is like meditation for camera nerds. Great stuff! I have a Sony with a 30 times zoom that's pretty cool, and used as a backup when lugging the (k30/k70 around is not appropriate (not very often). The images are good, but it's a sterile, disconnected experience compared to the k30 or k70. That GR looks like it may be better in that regard.

    • @snappiness
      @snappiness  3 года назад +1

      I was really pleased with how the controls felt. Not sure about the GRIII, but the buttons on this one feel very similar to the experience of a DSLR. The front control dial I really like. I like the side plus and minus button which can scroll through a bunch of settings depending how you set it up. The rear dial is a little funky because it's not a wheel but a switch that also presses like a button. It's the only bit I would change.

  • @lioneldm5130

    I alwasy have my gr in the pocket or around my neck hanging like a pass from one side only. So when rain comes, I can slip it under my jacket in a second, and take it back again with one hand. Very practical on bicycle. The flat bottom and side are good if you don't have a tripod. I've got a small gorila one in case there is no flat place to put it on. I use also a small cokin filter adapter for graduate filters. The wide angle is good but flare is an issue. You might get big purple spots on your images that cannot be removed easily. Check twice before leaving your spot. For ctty trips by train with backpack and children, it's perfect. I used to fly paragliding and i think it's the camera i would take if i fly again. And i can now use my dslr's with pleasure when i want to have time for me without children. A really good camera!

Quiet similar to the GR but with a built in flash. Also own a Fuji X100V with both the wide angle adapter + tele converter(to 50mm). De Ricoh GR wide angle lens is interchangeable with these. Great video enjoyed it especially the kids photos. I'm in the same boat and now I really want a gr. Could you elaborate on the use of flash? And how about the snap focusing for kids photos was this quicker than the k3/k1 AF? Thank you.

    • @snappiness

      I haven't played with the snap focus much for the kids for a few reasons, but I'm sure it would work great. The single point AF is fast enough in good light, but once the light starts to dip slows down considerably to unusable pretty quick.
      I have a lot of requests to do more with the flash so I will. It's really nifty. Still learning some flash basics myself, bit picking it up pretty quickly.

    Wonderful.
    I have a friend who has a GRII, I held it once but I cannot stand the feel of it, I'm talking about the physical texture material... whatever that is, it gives me unpleasant goosebumps, like someone scratching on chalkboard lol (yes I am a sensory processing delicate little child). So for me the GR's are out until they release them in different finishes.
    GRII and especially GRIII are not cheap either. For the price of a GRIII you could get a KP and 1-2 lenses (for same IQ), and the KP is pretty compact (put a XS 40mm on it :D ). So I find the GRIII a difficult sale, you absolutely must be all about the form and inconspicuous (ie creepy street stuff) for it to be attractive as an option (snap shooting etc).
    Personally, for the kind of prices they are asking I start shopping around. For a ultra compact camera I'd like the following features otherwise I feel the value isn't there;
    1) WR (necessary)
    2) Built in Flash (welcomed but not necessary)
    3) A rangefinder for those times you don't want to shoot from the screen (necessary)
    4) Flip screen (nice but not necessary)
    5) Manual focus adjustment via the lens ring and not a +/- button (necessary)
    I haven't looked hard enough at other brand competitors to GR to see if any camera exists with these 5 features, even at a cost of being a bit more bulky, but if they had them, with similar IQ, and it's a few grams heavier and bulkier (yet still pocketable)... then I think they would get my money.

    • @snappiness
      @snappiness  3 года назад +1

      I agree the value proposition is difficult with the GR cameras. Not just missing nifty features like video, but even some practical features, and then at two times the cost of competitors. But it's also hard because there is no direct competitor. It is the smallest APSC camera by a long shot in pocketable terms. I'm happy with the $250 I paid for mine, but even $400 for a used GRII feels pushing it letting alone $800 for a new GRIII. For $400 I could get a new/used LX100 or fuji xf10 which both seem like great cameras, albeit not pants pocketable. From my research at least I think the LX100 is the most appealing feature set and image quality wise. (the new one is more like $700 new though).
      All that being said, I think the GR series exists because of the emotional pull. I actually really like the ergonomics so that's part of the experience. And then the image quality is just so good it sucks you in. Logical? Can't be. Good for everyone? No way. But at the same time I really do love mine :)

    • @SummersSnaps
      @SummersSnaps 3 года назад

      @@snappiness Agreed. A GRIII is $1500AUD out here! Insane! But.. like you say there is not much like it in that form factor, genuinely pocketable. If the GRIV gets a lot of the things I list above (especially WR and focus ring) then that really starts to make it attractive.. regardless of price point. But for now it's just a bit too much coin for lack of essentials for this guy.
      Another thing is that when I leave the house I tend to take my keys, wallet, phone and small SSD back up drive/s. So I'm pretty much into a manbag territory. I could ditch the wallet and have all my driving licence and cc info on the phone to take one less thing but I am still left with my backups. So if I'm into a bag territory then I don't really mind taking a smallish camera with me, like a XT-4 with a compact lens etc. I like the allure of a genuinely front pocketable camera like the GRIII but I am not that kind of guy that leaves the house with just a camera and keys (wish I was!).

    Great video and images as always. I have the same camera, I really enjoy using it, but haven't figured out how to use it quickly what with all the buttons and switches. • @snappiness
      @snappiness  3 года назад

      Part of it is the filter, but mostly because the circular polarizer will darken the edges of the sky in the frame more than the center. Part of it is because of shooting in the positive film simulation which adds a vignette. These were all straight out of camera except a few where I took the JPG and removed dust spots :) I have the raw files still to take my favorites and give them a different look.

    Nice vid. I tried this with a Fuji x100s. The Fuji is just a little too big for a pocket while hiking so I can see how the GR is a perfect fit for most people. I would have been tempted when my kids were younger. But an ist DL and DA 40 were my combo of choice on a neck strap.
    Other than the Fuji being just a little too big, I didnt like being stuck at 35mm eqv. I usually want longer or wider. That is really what has kept me from purchasing a GR but they are pretty amazing and maybe in a few years when the III is cheap I'll pick one up.

      The ist DL + DA 40 would make a nice combo. The ist dl is very compact. More so than some mirrorless cameras even ;)
      The 28mm fixed length really hasn't been bad. There are sometimes I wish I had the zoom, but for family snapshots and landscapes it's actually pretty perfect the way it is. For portraits of the kids I think it's nice. Wide angle has a nice playful look for children and really puts them in the environment. It's not so flattering on larger subjects if you get too close. Makes their noses look big :)
      The filter I was using is a B+W circular polarizer. It works pretty well. I think it has more color tint than a newer Tiffen I have, but my Tiffen is a larger size so I couldn't use it without step up rings.

    After taking my Pentax K-50 with a slowly failing sigma 18-300 lens with me on a 160 mile bicycle trail ride (which finished off the lens), I decided I wanted something tougher and smaller for such outings. Keeping in mind that these days some of my best "vacation" photos have been taken with a phone, I really want the versatility of Optical Zoom for outdoor outings. Being a Pentax user, I first went for the Ricoh WG-50. Disappointed with the image quality, I immediately sent it back and ended up going with an Olympus TG-5, which I am much happier with. Sad I couldn't go with Ricoh ... I really wanted to. But ... iq does matter. With a focal length range of 25-100, I can still reach out and bring some things in a bit closer, which is important to me for any general-use camera. It's not what I'm used to with my DSLR daily carry 18-270, but it beats a fixed focal length and gives it enough versatility for my purposes. Nothing is "free" - there are no solutions, only compromises :-). It's been dragged through the water on float trips and banged around a bit and it keeps on ticking.
