Chris Stuckmann reviews Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society, starring Atsuko Tanaka, Osamu Saka, Akio Ôtsuka. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama. Развлечения
Stand Alone Complex and 2nd GiG are my favourite adaptation of the Ghost in the Shell manga. It's so gooooood!
I LOVE it too. They're closing Toonami with it now every Sat/early Sun. Beginning it with the new Samurai Jack and ending it with Ghost. Toonami is the best!
Gotta agree
That scene in the hospital with Togusa and his daughter made me scream the first time I watched it. Togusa was always my favorite character and to see him go through that was so heart pounding and horrifying. Can't wait to see what they do with his character in the live action movie.
XxMaskedPuppetxX cried twice for the whole GitS series. This and tachikoma sacrifice to save Batou.
Chris, you need to review the old Samurai Jack episodes at some point, or the series as a whole once Season 5 is finished. Love to hear your thoughts on it
GearSolidSnake
Gotta get back
back to the past
SAMURAI JACK!
True!! last night's episode was awesome. I love the tone of season 5.
GearSolidSnake I second this! Share some Samurai Jack love, please Chris!
this
YES, YES, YES, YES,. YES!!!! I LOVE THE NEW SEASON SO FAR!!
The scene with Togusa and this daughter as Batou desperately tries to get to him in time is one of my favorite moments in the entire franchise. It was pulled off so well.
That was one one of the most dramatic, intense moment in ANY film. Anime or otherwise.
You clearly didn't understand this movie and why there were callbacks to the first film. This OVA was meant to be a reflection of the original Ghost in the Shell, but the opposite at the same time. A lot of the themes are actually mirror images, opposites of the themes from the GITS movie. A lot of what happens is an inverse. Rather than two people creating a new being, it's multiplication. Rather than Motoko combining with one other to create a single entity, it's a fragment of Motoko creating a collective. As opposed to the birth of a new being, it's the controversial birth of a different kind of society. This film has nothing to do with Japan's penchant for creating compilation movies.
That's a very interesting take on it, changed my view on the film. Thanks for sharing
I wanted to briefly address your comment about the poor ending of GITS: SSS. I've noted that a lot of reviewers often complain about the endings of anime series. Sometimes this is understandable, as when the studio didn't finish adapting the manga. But often times I think that the reviewer fails to consider the different approaches to storytelling one often finds in Eastern cultures. For 10 years I taught mythology at the University of Kentucky, and when we came to our unit on Occidental mythology I always had to tell my students not to expect the same kind of linear stories they were used to here in the West. We like our stories to be like freight trains, speeding down a fixed track to a final destination. Should a story stray from the track, we get an odd feeling that something is out of place or just isn't right, just like we would if we saw a freight train running on a highway without tracks. And should our story never reach its destination, then we're left with an empty feeling. As one reviewer is fond of saying, for us, "the ending is paramount."
However, in the East, they often take a more circular-less linear-approach to storytelling. For them it's more about the journey than it is the destination. In fact, in earlier times they viewed our no-holes-barred-get-to-the-end-at-all-cost approach as being crude and unsophisticated. Most Eastern audiences have no problem at all when random characters get introduced to the story, or the plot temporarily spins off in a direction that has little to do with the main storyline. Like life, to them it's all part of the journey. If the main character (and hence the reader) learned something valuable or interesting, then that's just fine.
Of course, with the ubiquitous presence of Western media being felt everywhere, tastes have changed a lot over the past several decades. Still, you may want to keep this in mind the next time you watch an anime whose ending seems incomplete. Perhaps it's asking you to consider the work in a different way.
Love your channel, by the way.
very interesting
When he calls Stand Alone Complex a "pretty good show".
MASSIVE UNDERSTATEMENT ALERT
"The first one (Ghost in the Shell) was too philosophical and introspective" - The Director of the new GitS movie.
We all know it won't be good
Matt that explains why the live action looks like a generic action movie
Wow... He said that? I was expecting a different story with good looks, but now i'm terribly afraid, because above everything, Ghost in the Shell is about humanity and what makes a human being.
I was worried about that plot that the Major was going to take revenge on the people that made her body a robot, clichéd yes, but could work. But now things are worse.
Wow. Such great insight from the man who directed Snow White and the Huntsman.
If you are referring to the Den of Geek interview here: www.denofgeek.com/uk/movies/ghost-in-the-shell/45376/rupert-sanders-interview-adapting-ghost-in-the-shell
then you have to admit that your quote is taking what he said a bit out of context.
When asked about the story of the film and how it was connected to the original he said: "originally, the version I wanted to do was borrowing from the first, but... I think it's a hard story to tell cinematically. There's so much philosophical introspection that it's not an easy multiplex filler." He does not say that the first Ghost in the Shell is too philosophical and introspective; he said the original was difficult to be told cinematically while also fulfilling the marketing needs of the producers and the studio.
In fact, later on in the interview when asked where the film was at in development when he joined on, he says that it had strayed from the original series and he wanted to bring it back.
Once again, your quote seems awfully similar to his quote from this interview just taken out of context. If you are indeed referencing another interview or statement from the director then feel free to cite it to ensure you aren't misleading people.
I'm honestly not very optimistic for this film. I'm not a fan of what I've seen and I don't think this will be the film that breaks the streak of shitty anime adaptations. I'd just like to avoid any flat out wrong information being spread about the film or the director.
He also followed that with:
“That’s what so many people like about it and I hope we channel that into the film. But hopefully built a bigger film around it so people are excited in the cinema and enriched, in some way.”
But yeah, I get your point.
Chris. I really love all these anime reviews you've been giving us lately. Please continue them!
Thank you for reviewing these movies. Been a big fan of the saga since I was 12 and have been WAITING for a youtuber such as yourself to review them, the ones that were up prior to you were less professionally made to your videos and were things I could make without even using an editing program. Wish thesewere up when I was curious about "GS2: Innocence"
You are getting close to 1 million subs Chris! Keeps going with the great content :)
*To me this is my favorite Ghost in the Shell movie, because to me Stand Alone Complex has the BEST character designs, also im a action junkie.*
Great review as always Chris.
Chris stuckmann reviews on Sunday make me happy
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes
Thank you, I don't know if you read the comments but I'm still happy you reviewed this. ( I asked for this on your last ghost in the shell review) and I agree;Yoko Kanno is one of the best anime music composers.
Every time i get a notification about an anime review from you i cant help but click on it immediately
Shine on, Chris
I loved this series. I was studying at uni and the themes of the series happened to cover what I happened to researching at the time. The show was a surprising amount of help and really interesting.
Great review Chris.
can you review the tv show ghost in the shell stand alone complex seasons 1 and 2 or it's new blu-ray release
I really liked this movie, although it came after highest point in the whole GitS multiverse IMO (2 GiG).
And what unanwsered questions? Ending was pretty clear in my opinion since almost the same motive was used in 1998 Serial Experiment Lain, later in other movies like Kara no Kyoukai (atleast concept of this). Hell, to the point that this is overused.. The Biggest problem is that is too simillar to first Oshii movie.
And about repackage - well, it's not like they don't have a problem with this. They do, they don't have a problem with summaries - those OVA that you mentioned contain main story of Stand Alone Complex since you can argue that 2/3 of the series is filler (with were amazing but still unrelated to the main story, in 2 Gig relation was minimal) so they took the main story and fit it in 2,5h movie.
The episode of GITS: SAC where the killer cuts womens skin off and makes them watch still haunts my mind to this day. That shit was fucked.
Glad to hear Yoko Kano getting some props for her fantastic work on this series!
Does anyone know which song of the soundtrack starts playing at 3:51? (i'm pretty sure it's not darude-sandstorm)
Solid State Society. More like...
...Solid SNAKE Society.
The Bard the cringe is real with this one
Ah, thank you!
I know I'm late.. but this was so cringe that it hurt
just what ive been waiting for.. thanks Chris!
Chris, Can u do a review on Iron Fist? Been hearing terrible things about it, wanna hear your thoughts on it before watching
I'm 7 episodes in, it's not blowing me away but I am enjoying it. I do find it funny when Finns accent slips through a little but here and there
Abrar Faiyaz I'm no Chris stuckmann but my opinion on it so far (maybe 7 episodes in?) I'm loving it. I haven't finished Luke Cage yet but I would rate Iron fist right under Daredevil season two and just above Jessica jones in quality, with DD season one being the best in my eyes. Definitely give the first few episodes a chance before giving it a 12%.
Abrar Faiyaz If your a stickler for amazingly realistic martial arts fights, it's noticeablely lower quality then DareDevil and Luke Cage....its the worst of the Marvel Netflix (still good and watchable if your following Marvel)
I am really curious what you think about Battle Angel Alita (aka Gunnm). It's a Manga and Ghost in the Shell reminded me a lot of it (I love both). Next year the live action adaptation comes out. Would be nice if you review the manga.
Hey Chris! Great Content!
Eggsy hey eggsy nice profile pic
Yo when the sequel out
حمد علي+

Hi Eggsy, how are you and Roxy?
Thanks man
3:47 nice cut, i love me some yoko kanno
Chris can you review Sword of the Stranger? The characters don't have lot have a lot of backstory but the animation and fight scenes are gorgeous.
Please review BLADE RUNNER before BLADE RUNNER 2049
Rodrigo Timis That probably won't happen. He doesn't like Blade Runner that much.
Oh really? How do you know?
What's the rush? He has like 32 years to do it ;)
This movie is the best SAC for me.
The pacing is just right, action packed, emotional, smart, HAS CONSISTENT ANIMATION & has a little something to say.
The 2 season of the series were ATROCIOUSLY paced and contained copious amount of self-dialogue that go nowhere. The plot is interesting but it just stops & goes constantly. I actually enjoy the "stand-alone" episodes MUCH more than the "complex" ones since they are much more succinct and still interesting.
You ever see "Escaflowne," Chris? Yoko Kano's music in that is GREAT!!!
+chris stuckmann Your comment (and clip) on Ms Kanno took me back to the days when I started paying attention to her when the 3rd Macross Plus VHS came out and I went back to Best Buy to purchase the soundtrack. I love that soundtrack, and I think I will give the OVA another spin so many decades later. Hope it holds up and the woman likes it..
Which leads me to my question to you sir. Have you seen Macross PLUS, and what did you think of it? For added fun, how about Giant ROBO?
Yoko Kanno make everything she touches golden. I have all the SAC soundtracks and don’t regret for a second that I paid for the official Japanese versions. Luscious.
the film mix of 'take a little hand' is amazing.
5:00 ahh you mean the Kingdom Hearts Effect.
Chris honest to god where do you get your amazing tshirts from ?!
whats the song at 3:52?
Also as soon as you mention oka Kanu and played the music I got chills
Hi guys
so i'm planning to get into the Ghost in the Shell world, but i don't know where to start after watching the movie. So, after the finishing the original 1995 movie what should i watch next?
You should watch the sequel to the original movie which is of course Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. It's a great film. After that I strongly recommend the Stand Alone Complex anime series + the solid state society continuation.
Then there's ghost in the shell Arise, which is a series of OVA's with "Ghost in the shell The New Movie 2015" as it's final chapter. I also recommend the original Manga.
Thanks man. Really excited to get into Ghost In the Shell!
Good to hear! Enjoy :)
SSS was originally intended as a third SAC season but then converted to Direct to DVD due to budget reasons.
Chris, you should review the TV series "Taboo" starring Tom Hardy, just finished watching it and would like to know your opinion about it
please review Paprika!!!
The best way to treat this film is it being Season 3 for SAC. I think the film is fantastic in its own right but isn't meant to be watched by itself. The ending doesn't feel lazy to me, just that it keeps in line with how the seasons end. I honestly rate this movie very high because of that with the understanding that it is not how you would rate a traditional stand alone film.
Chris, i do hope you are gonna reviewing GiTS: SAC series next.
Awesome shirt Chris
Why didn't you review the series as well? It would have made your reviews more complete.
hey Chris could you review Reservoir Dogs, it's coming back to theaters
Hi, CHRIS... There seems to be a lot of sub genres when it comes to different types of anime. I was wondering if you could make an Explained Video about Anime and its different subdivisions that is seems to have. What do you say?
When are you reviewing all the Alien movies? Covenant is coming up soon!
Chris, you probably watched this already but I was wondering if you would do a review for Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad
Anyone knows where to watch it?
Did you ever watch Psycho Pass? It's also a great show that takes a lot of its cues from GITS, but manages to take some of the themes to different places. A great series.
You should watch and review Nausicca of the valley of the Wind.
The ending scene is great fun with an incredible soundtrack...
You can buy the OST for this and both seasons of GITS: SAC at amazon. Great having them.
The thumbnail is Chris after reading the comments
Chris you should do reviews on classic movies like the shining and Shawshank redemption etc.
I love Ghost in Shell stand alone complex I wish it was a lot longer
I just got tickets to an advanced screening to see Gifted this Tuesday at 7pm. I know you've been to early screenings before, and I was just wondering how early should I arrive there? I would really appreciate it :)
Hey Chris could you please review Donnie Darko now when it is re-realeased? It would be awesome!
hey Chris can you review my fav most watched anime feature of all time VHS Project A'ko, still the only VHS i have, no deck though, various DVD versions forgettable
Please review Akira, I'm extremely interested to hear your thoughts on the film.
Big fan of your reviews @Chris Stuckmann. Lots of love from India. We would love to see a review from you for India's biggest motion picture- Bahubali: The Beginning.
Mr.s I had an idea for you can you make a video every month to tell us which Netflix shows or movies to watch that month like you top 5 movies and top 5 shows to watch on Netflix each month? Please and thank you! Saul lopez is my name =D big fan.
I'm so confused. What is the chronological order of these shows and movies? Id really like to start getting into them but idk where to start 😩
Hey Chris, I noticed that you didn't like the unanswered questions that this film presents, but you praised the questions in the first film. You said it gives "a sense of euphoria." Why do you say this film has lazy screenwriting when it does the same thing? Is there a deciding factor, like the execution or the setup of these questions? I haven't seen this film, so I can't make the comparison. But, I would like to hear your thoughts.
Yeees Replica off this soundtrack is soooooo Goooood, i listen to it all the time.
whats the ost name at 3.52?
Anybody hear they are coming out with two more AC movies?
Sooooooo your not reviewing GITS SAC cause.... your ocd says it's ok?
have you reviewed Boondock Saints?
I liked the movie, but then I'm a fan of Stand Alone Complex, which is easily my favorite incarnation of this franchise.
Uhhh... when did you review the arise movie?
Chris, would you consider reviewing the anime series "Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom"? It's one of the most emotionally powerful crime dramas I've ever seen.
If you've seen it, then you should also do a review of the GITS: Stand Alone Complex series.
please review 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist series
Hey Chris can you review Coneheads?
1MoreRep Aw, I love that movie.
chris , are you going to see game of thrones when the last season this year is finished??? I dont think it is as good as the first season of true detective or the sopranos , but its still a really good hbo show
Chris, didnt you say the same thing about the ending of the first movie and you praised it for it being ambiguous? I feel I may have missed an important point.
I have already got Stuckmannized!
I am not sure if I like Yoko Kanno or Joe Hiasashi more when it comes to anime, but both are great.
Yoko Kanno, Joe Hiasashi, Nobou Uematsu, and Hanz Zimmer are, imo, the best composers of entertainment :O
u should review the TV series, I love ur vids!!!
If you watched Samurai Jack could you do an overall review plis??
This movie is so hard to find on IMDb
Nice shirt :) I worked on Toonami way back when. We won an Emmy for it. it was while I was at Turner Studios. We did all the interstitials for Toonami. I still have the animatics. let me know if you'd like to see them.

The co-writer of the live action Ghost in the Shell is Ehren Kruger, the guy who wrote the live action Transformers sequels.
Pray to God

Solid State Society was enjoyable and the music was superb - Yoko Kanno excelled herself.
How many of these were there, exactly?
Excelent review.
Hey Chris there is a movie called The Blackcoat's Daughter(also called February). It's a horror film but very different one. It kinda reminded me The VVitch. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this movie
