So I have both the boombox 3 and the xg500 and have spent many many many hours listening to both, in my very personal and honest OPINION I feel as if the Jbl, definitely has harder hitting bass, but with that being said at higher volumes, which is normally needed when I’m listening outside, the tonality differences of the bass and mids start to merge, I’m not saying they aren’t clear, like you can hear them, but it’s almost as if the extra subwoofer they added gives it’s too much umph to the bass at that volume, it’s not exactly muddy but the best way to describe it is, linear? It’s not as dynamic as it is at lower volumes. At least in my ears I hear that, also the highs at that volume range have the slightest bit of distortion not much at all, but if the song you’re listening to is peaking that frequency range you can kinda notice, but again only at the 80-90 percent volume range. The Sony xg-500 however is really good at picking up those tonality differences in the bass and the mids, I’ve played the upright bass and the bass guitar for years, and that might be why I’m able to pick up the slight difference but none the less, the Sony doesn’t have as much umph to its bass, it’s not a hit you in the chest hard type bass, it’s a nice warm, low bass, it can definitely get pretty punchy but not as much as the Jbl, I think that’s why even at the higher volume range like 80-90 present you’re not getting that loss of different tones, and the slight note changes, and the highs are wayyy softer so even at higher frequencies it’s not distorted as much, but that being said, it can sometimes make the sound stage feel a little small, it’s not bad, just not nearly as “open” sounding as the Jbl, it’s almost like you are still listening to it inside. I love both very much, and I honestly use the Jbl for hip hop, and r&b mostly but for everything else the Sony is my go to, especially with that live sound option it really helps pronounce those instruments and different sounds, kinda makes it more of a spatial sound, leaning more towards the “open” Jbl sound but still with that warm bass I love. Also this is after the recent sony firmware update as I didn’t own the speakers before it. They came with the update. Side note: I also have the little brother to the xg500 the xg300 it was the first one I got out of the two, and it’s generally the same just not as loud (obviously) and has an even softer tone than the xg500 again because it’s not as big, and it’s ip67 rated so it can be submerged for a bit without worry, (yes I’ve personally done it to my own) and the mesh on the outside is technically washable on both, I just wouldn’t recommend dunking the XG-500 in water at all. they both have the x-balanced speakers and they are what help the Sony achieve the ability to keep clarity at the higher volumes. I do not own the smaller jbl extreme 3 but I have compared in person and I have to admit the jbl, at that size is the better choice, although it tends to be more expensive than the Sony. Not all the time though you can catch deals on both.

I also got a boombox 3 ans when playing at 80-90% battery i get about 4h of battery life which is far from the playtime JBL announced, do you have the same problem?
For indoor use, I would grab the Sony, but i need to use my boom box for the outdoors. Going to the springs, hiking, biking, offloading with my go cart and motor bike friends, just for that, I would have to get the JBL. I would cry if someone threw it in the water or got dirt on it, we're fighting. I see both being used, like you said, one for indoor and one for out door... but that extra 5 hours ain't nothing to laugh at, especially if your camping over night. The Sony xg500 sounds better, balanced in bass and much more fuller both inside and outside. I'll go for the Sony xg500. I was completely blown out from the sound and Bassy response from Sony xg500
I've recently updated my XG300 and XG500. Those speakers sound SO GOOD now. I've even been choosing to take them on trips vs all of the JBL speakers I have.
@@yallreadyknow4173 There was recently an update for the speakers that improved their sound. I recently got it, so can't say much about the sound they had before. But based on what people says the improvement was MAJOR. Either way i love the performance by it myself.
I have the Sony, my friend has the Boombox. We both agreed on the Sonys behalf being the winner. It just sounds different. Not that amount of bass the JBL has, but its a cleaner nicer tone bass. And it just sounds so much better. Sounds cleaner and has a lot better acousticity, fills the room/house pretty well with its warm sound.
This is something it took me a while to figure out. Initially, the loudness and brightness of the JBL made me feel like it was the better speaker. After listening for around 20 mins, I would find myself turning it down lower and lower because it was becoming annoying. My wife noticed the same thing. We switched to the XG500 and went a full day in the backyard without adjusting the volume or moving the speaker around. Then we started using it around the house and figured the warmer sound is simply more "listenable." Personally, I think all of the Sony speakers are good for all general purposes. I like the JBL speakers for things like working out, sports or events with lots of distractions
@@NewStuffTV1 Yes, right. The JBL has the common listening market, the Sony has the guys who have more refined ears than the usual. So the power is good for outdoors, the warmness is good for indoors. The problem is the same as you said, at the first time your jaws drops, then you hear the Sony, and you cant hear the JBL the same again, it just sounds.. cheap. It sucks to say for a brand with a size and reputation like this. But I can relate to this, I have a built sound system in my car done by myself, and the sub is a JBL for obvious reasons, power. But I listened to another Alpine sub in the same category as my Splitstream 1000, and god.. it sucks compared to the Alpine. And I didnt even mention JL audio.. I feel like its a long lost shot for JBL. Not the same as it was ever once.

Tbh, I like both of them, but SOny sound clearer and more refined, and since I aim to use is mostly indoor or on indoor party trips, I think I will go for the sony because as you said, the design is just perfect for cozy indoor party. Sold !
Personally jbl speakers have this athletic build to them, meaning outdoors for me. It's all about what the speakers are meant to do and who does it best. Marshall emberton is my office use and relax and chill after work moments. Jbl is that weekend stuff. Turn it up!

seriously debating if i should get BB3. i have original BB works perfectly fine. haven’t got tired of the bass on that. going 3 years strong. i’m mainly concerned about bass response. is bass response on BB3 that much of a difference to justify buying it ? or should i just stick to my og BB
boombox 3 for sure performs better in bass, mids and highs, it gets louder and looks better in my opinion. technically its a way newer speaker they apgraded lots of stuff

Great review. I've had the chance to listen to both speakers indoors and the sony surprised me. In my opinion they both sound really good. the sony wins on features because you can pair all sony speakers together plus they have more options at the back. the jbl looks more rigid and better water resistant. Sony also wins on battery life, its a win if you buy either one, getting both is the best option.
XG500 is much better looking with a better battery. More capable connections and it’s cheaper. Sound is comparable in both. JBL has more bass but Sony is crisper
Mic input of the XG500 is a dealbreaker for me. Make the speaker much more versatile than just music, and long trip in car is way more entertaining with karaoke. I never have to worry about battery life either. Indoor, 30-40% volume is way more than enough unless I wanted the police to give me a visit. One complain is that sometime the bass is too boomy and drown the mid and high if you leave EQ at default. Outdoor, it is fine if you are about 5 meters or less; if you want the sound to travel further then only way is to get a big one. The speaker cannot give full power on battery though which I think should be an option.
@@ChuckNorrisFake I do not have the JBL boombox to compare side by side. I think you can listen in person or search for comparison videos. Mind that it is my personal though, and the feeling of bass will change not only from the setting but also the environment - like playing in a small bedroom then big living room or open space. In those case I can change the EQ so it'll fit to my liking.
New stuff.... been a long time fan of your channel. Do you by chance have the tribit stormbox blast? I think a lot of viewers would like to see the blast compared to boombox 3. At 169 right the blast gives it all it wants for sound and the tribit app is much better vs jbl but be cool to see ya review the blast and after watchin your channel for couple years now and watchin ya review speakers earbuds headphones neck coolers lol I think the blast would really impress ya!!!

For a speaker as such I’ll take a JBL because of the base and unique sound but as far as headphones I’ll take Sony because of the crisp and instrumental sound:)
jbl speakers have a bright sound, but it sounds flat, and high-frequency sounds will start to choke on metal music because of the bright sound. Sony has a more voluminous and muffled sound, which allows you to reveal the sound of complex music. Well, third-party equalizers have not been canceled.
You're right... When listening black sabbath, iron maiden, SoD, AC/DC on xg500's smaller brother xg300 sounds perfect Sony speakers love heavw metal and hard rock
I have the sony xg 500 , and it sounds amazing , however to get the most out of it you need a custom equalizer, using a modern samsung A series or S series phone.The equalizer apps from the playstore are very poor and only introduce distortion. If you dont have a samsung phone , you will not get the most out of this speaker I realized there are some problems with the xg500 1 is that the factory treble settings used by sony is way too low. This can be rectified with the built in equalizer on samsung phones, you need to raise 4k , 8k , 16k treble to the maximum , when this is done the muffle sound from the xg 500 is totally gone. 2 another problem is that the material sony used for the xg500 , creates the muffle sound, it blocks out the treble , the material looks great and is durable , however it blocks out treble from escaping from the 2 tweeters. This is totally rectified by boosting the 4k , 8k 16k treble as i have mentioned before on the samsung phones. 3 the app sony provided has poor equalizer adjustments. The app gives you the remaining battery life etc, has lighting controls, karaoke settings , it is very good. Much better than the apps from jbl, however sony hard limits the anount of treble and bass you can add. Which is why you still need a samsung phone to get the most out of the xg 500. My battery life is amazing even at max volume. To get the xg500 to play at its loudest , you need to plug in the wall adapter. All in all i didnt regret choosing the sony over a jbl boombox. The sony is more versatile , like having mic inputs, turning it into an instant karaoke machine, i just plug in my wireless mic. The boombox does not have this function, for my speaker collection i have 2 Harman kardon onyx studio 3 , a jbl party box and the sony xg 500
I also have tested both and I liked the Sony a little bit more because it had for my taste a better bass but the mids are for sure better at JBL, where the highs at the sony are a little bit weak and by the jbl overpowered.
I issue. If your playing one speaker Vs. other don't play several songs and then use the other speaker. You can't remember how the other sounded during that song in a particular tune. Play some of a song and then play the exack same tune with the other speaker. Then go on to a different genre and again play a little of the song(maybe 30 sec's. and then the other speaker playing the exact same genre and the exact same part of song. Your setting is very nice to look at but it's outside and inside is where maybe most people are going to play there speakers. Or play same in and then out side when you've done with all the same sounds but outside. IMHO
For me it comes down to brand. Sony has been more reliable to me. I have bought 2 jbl and 2 Sony over the last 7 years and both my Sonys are still working and my jbls aren’t
Fortunately the xg500 has headroom for some serious EQ, unlike the JBL models. But the stock response is quite poor, (extremely deficient above 1khz) so it's practically necessary to EQ to a more neutral and low bass (rather than upper bass) tilted response, unlike the comparatively better stock JBL response. Only upside to Sony really is that you can get these for under $200 used, with good enough headroom.
@@JuanAuribus bass increase on my jbl charge 5 isnt much of a difference, but when mids and highs are pushed it gets loud. the charge 5 already has amazing bass for its size and compared to its rivals. best part it doesnt compress at high volumes. alot of sony speakers do ive owned sony speakers before
@@JuanAuribusthe jobless boombox 3 doesn’t compress that much it’s almost like it could get even louder almost like the amp is holding it back -I plugged it wired into my pic I got decibels up to 127db and feel I can still get louder if it got upgrades
What bothered me about the JBL is that there is no USB playback. My music is on external hard drives and flash drives. So even though I was impressed with the sound, I returned it just because I don't use my phone for music.
You get a longer life battery if you don’t let the battery die all the way there’s so many cycles got in a lithium battery Next to start losing charge, it won’t fully charge anymore
That's EXACTLY what I figured out. I've changed all of my in home speakers to Sony and now I'm starting to take them with me more as I go out to places like the beach.
Hi You. You should make the test also with the usb connected, there is a huge difference in sound quality between the bluetooth and the usb. Streaming music usually makes the mid and highs sounding a little bit " dull ". So make a review also playing via usb.. All the best from Sweden..

man im really split between these 2. one the 1 hand i'm a masseur and i want to use one for relaxation music/sounds. so the versitality and softness of the sony box is really appealing. on the other hand i like dubstep and other heavy bass music and i sport a lot. so i have multiple usecases and both are the better choice in only some of my situations xD maybe i'll buy both
The XG 500 Bass was only beat because of added subwoofer on bb3 Even then the subwoofer only hits low frequencies bass, it doesn't per say pound harder, Sony does
Don’t feel bad, I have both Bose and JBL products all over my house. I have a Bose Bluetooth Speaker in my Kitchen, My JBL Party Box 110 in my basement. I just placed an order for the Boom Box 3. I don’t know where I am gonna keep it in my house, maybe my Bedroom if my wife allows it lol.
Can you tell if the bohemian rhapsody song or billie jean song sometimes makes a clicking or proplind sound when played through the jbl go 3 but not always.help for me, in 60 70 volume level
Honestly, I think they're both GREAT. I recently updated my XG500 and XG300 and they sound even better. Over the last month or so, I've been chasing the Sony speakers for personal use over JBL for a few reasons. Both brands have their time and place for usage. Unfortunately, most people have to chose ONE to do everything.
sony speaker sounds muffled compared to JBL. I saw it in another review and JBL was clearly winning. But sony cost $150 less right now on sale compared to JBL boombox 3 on sale as well.

As much as I love, Sony I have heard both speakers with all types of genres of music. Wasn't much for JBL but Sony need to get the act together cuz to be honest the JBL blue the Sony out of the water. There wasn't even a comparison. The Sony sounded like something you'd buy from a cheap flea market I went ahead and bought the JBL. Now use it on my mobility scooter and to be honest it kicks ass

$160 for the XG500 is a steal! However, you can find the BB2 at a decent discount it you look around. In about 3-6 months, the BB3 should be cheaper too... maybe.

boombox 3 for sure performs better in bass, mids and highs, it gets louder

Great review. I've had the chance to listen to both speakers indoors and the sony surprised me. In my opinion they both sound really good. the sony wins on features because you can pair all sony speakers together plus they have more options at the back. the jbl looks more rigid and better water resistant. Sony also wins on battery life, its a win if you buy either one, getting both is the best option.

JBL BB3 has way more atmosphere in the overall sound than the Sony; it's less like a desktop speaker and more like a home theater.

XG500 is much better looking with a better battery. More capable connections and it’s cheaper. Sound is comparable in both. JBL has more bass but Sony is crisper

Mic input of the XG500 is a dealbreaker for me. Make the speaker much more versatile than just music, and long trip in car is way more entertaining with karaoke. I never have to worry about battery life either.
Indoor, 30-40% volume is way more than enough unless I wanted the police to give me a visit. One complain is that sometime the bass is too boomy and drown the mid and high if you leave EQ at default.
Outdoor, it is fine if you are about 5 meters or less; if you want the sound to travel further then only way is to get a big one. The speaker cannot give full power on battery though which I think should be an option.
@@ChuckNorrisFake I do not have the JBL boombox to compare side by side. I think you can listen in person or search for comparison videos. Mind that it is my personal though, and the feeling of bass will change not only from the setting but also the environment - like playing in a small bedroom then big living room or open space. In those case I can change the EQ so it'll fit to my liking.
Brotip: if you have a car at hand, you never have to worry about battery life of anything you bring with you.

New stuff.... been a long time fan of your channel. Do you by chance have the tribit stormbox blast? I think a lot of viewers would like to see the blast compared to boombox 3. At 169 right the blast gives it all it wants for sound and the tribit app is much better vs jbl but be cool to see ya review the blast and after watchin your channel for couple years now and watchin ya review speakers earbuds headphones neck coolers lol I think the blast would really impress ya!!!
He should compare the tribit to the sony, thats where its gonna be hard to decide but the edge is on tribit for sure..

For a speaker as such I’ll take a JBL because of the base and unique sound but as far as headphones I’ll take Sony because of the crisp and instrumental sound:)

jbl speakers have a bright sound, but it sounds flat, and high-frequency sounds will start to choke on metal music because of the bright sound. Sony has a more voluminous and muffled sound, which allows you to reveal the sound of complex music. Well, third-party equalizers have not been canceled.

I have the sony xg 500 , and it sounds amazing , however to get the most out of it you need a custom equalizer, using a modern samsung A series or S series phone.The equalizer apps from the playstore are very poor and only introduce distortion.
If you dont have a samsung phone , you will not get the most out of this speaker
I realized there are some problems with the xg500
1 is that the factory treble settings used by sony is way too low. This can be rectified with the built in equalizer on samsung phones, you need to raise
4k , 8k , 16k treble to the maximum , when this is done the muffle sound from the xg 500 is totally gone.
2 another problem is that the material sony used for the xg500 , creates the muffle sound, it blocks out the treble , the material looks great and is durable , however it blocks out treble from escaping from the 2 tweeters. This is totally rectified by boosting the
4k , 8k 16k treble as i have mentioned before on the samsung phones.
3 the app sony provided has poor equalizer adjustments. The app gives you the remaining battery life etc, has lighting controls, karaoke settings , it is very good. Much better than the apps from jbl, however sony hard limits the anount of treble and bass you can add. Which is why you still need a samsung phone to get the most out of the xg 500.
My battery life is amazing even at max volume. To get the xg500 to play at its loudest , you need to plug in the wall adapter.
All in all i didnt regret choosing the sony over a jbl boombox. The sony is more versatile , like having mic inputs, turning it into an instant karaoke machine, i just plug in my wireless mic.
The boombox does not have this function, for my speaker collection i have 2 Harman kardon onyx studio 3 , a jbl party box and the sony xg 500
I also have tested both and I liked the Sony a little bit more because it had for my taste a better bass but the mids are for sure better at JBL, where the highs at the sony are a little bit weak and by the jbl overpowered.

I issue. If your playing one speaker Vs. other don't play several songs and then use the other speaker. You can't remember how the other sounded during that song in a particular tune. Play some of a song and then play the exack same tune with the other speaker. Then go on to a different genre and again play a little of the song(maybe 30 sec's. and then the other speaker playing the exact same genre and the exact same part of song. Your setting is very nice to look at but it's outside and inside is where maybe most people are going to play there speakers. Or play same in and then out side when you've done with all the same sounds but outside. IMHO
My Boombox 3 crapped out after only 6 months of use, I’m kinda worried about getting another one.

For me it comes down to brand. Sony has been more reliable to me. I have bought 2 jbl and 2 Sony over the last 7 years and both my Sonys are still working and my jbls aren’t

Fortunately the xg500 has headroom for some serious EQ, unlike the JBL models. But the stock response is quite poor, (extremely deficient above 1khz) so it's practically necessary to EQ to a more neutral and low bass (rather than upper bass) tilted response, unlike the comparatively better stock JBL response. Only upside to Sony really is that you can get these for under $200 used, with good enough headroom.

@@JuanAuribus bass increase on my jbl charge 5 isnt much of a difference, but when mids and highs are pushed it gets loud. the charge 5 already has amazing bass for its size and compared to its rivals. best part it doesnt compress at high volumes. alot of sony speakers do ive owned sony speakers before

What bothered me about the JBL is that there is no USB playback. My music is on external hard drives and flash drives. So even though I was impressed with the sound, I returned it just because I don't use my phone for music.

Hi You. You should make the test also with the usb connected, there is a huge difference in sound quality between the bluetooth and the usb. Streaming music usually makes the mid and highs sounding a little bit " dull ". So make a review also playing via usb.. All the best from Sweden..

man im really split between these 2. one the 1 hand i'm a masseur and i want to use one for relaxation music/sounds. so the versitality and softness of the sony box is really appealing. on the other hand i like dubstep and other heavy bass music and i sport a lot. so i have multiple usecases and both are the better choice in only some of my situations xD maybe i'll buy both

Don’t feel bad, I have both Bose and JBL products all over my house. I have a Bose Bluetooth Speaker in my Kitchen, My JBL Party Box 110 in my basement. I just placed an order for the Boom Box 3. I don’t know where I am gonna keep it in my house, maybe my Bedroom if my wife allows it lol.

Honestly, I think they're both GREAT. I recently updated my XG500 and XG300 and they sound even better. Over the last month or so, I've been chasing the Sony speakers for personal use over JBL for a few reasons. Both brands have their time and place for usage. Unfortunately, most people have to chose ONE to do everything.
Unfortunately jbl is superior in the overall sound department so sony fan boys can just point at the design and singing 😅
Jbl is the best but give sony props for the sexy styling and more connections. For what its mainly used for i would pick JBL its meant to be portable.

sony speaker sounds muffled compared to JBL. I saw it in another review and JBL was clearly winning. But sony cost $150 less right now on sale compared to JBL boombox 3 on sale as well.

Speaker breaking in: you suddenly realize you bought a nice speaker. That may explain why you fall in love 1-2 mos after purchase.

As much as I love, Sony I have heard both speakers with all types of genres of music. Wasn't much for JBL but Sony need to get the act together cuz to be honest the JBL blue the Sony out of the water. There wasn't even a comparison. The Sony sounded like something you'd buy from a cheap flea market I went ahead and bought the JBL. Now use it on my mobility scooter and to be honest it kicks ass

Sony speakers sound clearer if anything and probably what they were aiming for. While JBL feels punchier but at the cost of being slightly mushy.

$160 for the XG500 is a steal! However, you can find the BB2 at a decent discount it you look around. In about 3-6 months, the BB3 should be cheaper too... maybe.
