    As being Moldovan, I am rather impressed that for the first time there is a video describing the general history and features of the country instead of continuously repeating the label that is placed upon Moldova as the “poorest country in Europe”. Thank you for educating the world and for providing rather specific, factual information!

    Two things
    1 - Moldovans are Orthodox because of the Byzantine Empire and not Russia.
    2 - The coast south of Moldova did in fact belong to Moldova, but Russia decided to give it to Ukraine and instead give Moldova the Transnistria region which was inhabited by Russian and Ukranian majority, which of course rebeled when Moldova proclaimed independence, the war broke out and Russia came and as ''good guys'' stopped the war and conveniently left their army there to this day.

    I'm British but live in Eastern Europe now and speak Romanian, and had an excellent time in Moldova late last year during Winter. People are hardworking and good at heart as they have had many struggles and many still struggle to make a living, I had a lot of good conversations and everyone always helped openly. I would encourage people to visit but be open minded and don't try and compare it to what you are used to, just go and take it for what it is and show a bit of respect while there as things are tough, meaning don't haggle over a few lei, as its absolute peanuts for a foreigner and don't go on about how cheap it is; cheap for a visitor maybe but not for the majority of Moldovans. If you visit Transnistria and exit through Moldova again and not Ukraine, then be prepared to answer a few questions from the border police as to why you were there. I hope too one day Romania and Moldova unite, unfortunately it seems that polls in Romania, show Romanians overwhelmingly support it, yet consistently, polls in Moldova show the opposite, that most people want to stay as an independent Moldova.

    • @Bobskiboy85
      @Bobskiboy85 5 лет назад +6

      @Hungary #1 I think its fair to say that whole area going back to the days before and then during the Roman Empire has experienced many many geographical changes, with land being taken, handed back, formed, re-formed etc. So bit unfair to say Romanians are deceitful and treacherous and less hardworking, when they are the same people, formerly part of Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania and given Moldavia and Wallachia did form 'Romania', despite the annexation of Bessarabia by the Soviet Union. So Wallachians and Moldovians were Romania, until the Republic of Moldova declared independence. The east and north east of Romania still is Moldovia. So bit harsh your comments given the history of the region and how often it has changed hands etc, but ultimately modern Moldova and those peoples comprising modern Romania share the same language and the same religion and same traditions.

    • @Bobskiboy85
      @Bobskiboy85 5 лет назад +5

      @Hungary #1 I'm european as well and I live in Romania...so we effectively live in the same place given Transylvania is part of greater Romania... But funny all my good friends here and my family here must be all lazy traitors as you put it..bit sad given I live here so it's first hand for me too and all my friends and family are very decent and hardworking. I can't stand stereotyping like you have done as for me both sides of the border have good people trying to make ends meet. I think people need to be careful talking about treachery etc in this part of the world given so many countries and rulers have at times sold, bought and swapped allegiances...Austro-Hungarian empire.. My sister left 15 years ago, yet she still counts as a resident. Same for me and my wife. It's very hard, and there's a lot of bureaucracy to unregister yourself as a resident. Numbers, thus, are extremely inflated. The capital has around 800k people, but the rest of the country's population is at least halved since 1990, completely empty villages beginning to be common. The elderly die, the young prefer the capital or just out of the country. Such a small country, with a small population, but I hear moldovans e verywhere I go. Most of them in Italy (can't spend a day without meeting one). Half of my school mates left. France, Germany, USA, Canada, Russia, Dubai, Romania.

      You have Stefan statue. The Stefan is an romanian simbol. Moldova is a part of Romania. So you can not be transnistrian with romanian history and language. You are depported here by russians. You may be romanian or russian but never ever transnistrian. Its like you will say you are martian beacouse you are from mars, sorry bro. By the way ... why you have romanian cities there ? The name of the conflict region is from river Nistru, a romanian river name, and trans comes from a transition area that form the name trans-nistru, a conflict area between moldovians and ucranians, and depported russians. For romanians, moldovians are like texans in the US, basicaly are romanians, we have the same language from 2000 years with dialects.

    We also spent two days in Transnistria. You really feel in a parallel universe. Of course same thing for Moldova: great people and great (cheap) food. I have to say that to get into Transnistria was not that hard, it just took five minutes at the border. Ukrainian border guards were much stricter when we tried to get into Ukraine..

    Moldova became "russified" way before joining the Soviet Union,the historical region of Bessarabia was ceded to the Russian Empire somewhere in the beginning of the 19th century,the region was previously under Ottoman rule,the event was followed many denationalization reforms and some more history stuff.
    Just a context to the the deep and much more complex Moldo-Russian relationship.
    As a Moldovan I can definitely claim that the video is surprisingly accurate and the representation is just right (the pronunciation was a little off,but I guess that's fair).

      mermaidsknees How is life in Moldova like, where should I go if I visit? :)
      There have been some articles suggesting that work emigration of Moldovans to Western Europe is a big problem, is this accurate, or is this an exaggeration? And what do Moldovans think about the relations to the EU?

      Hey there,I would only recommend you visit Moldova as a stop on your way somewhere else as I personally don't see a lot of attractions AND most of them were actually mentioned in the video.Foreigners that occasionally spawn in the region as far as my experience goes say they had a good time mostly because of the people.So ya,if you're gonna roam around Chisinau,find some good company to show you around the parks,museums and cafes.I'd recommend Funky Mamaliga Hostel if you have to stay somewhere,the atmosphere is great,they have guided tours and THE PEOPLE out there are totally worth it.
      For Moldavian traditional food go to La Placinte.
      On a more negative note,the articles didn't lie,the migration does represent a real problem as pretty much everyone who has the opportunity to leave for a job or studies totally does so.The destinations are pretty varied but Western Europe is the most popular one as it's the most accessible and appealing.This means that middle-aged people will leave their families or leave with their families to pursue a better life somewhere else.Those who go alone often leave behind kids that are taken care of by other family members,and it's not a rare phenomenon that a child is raised completely by his grandparents or one of his grandparents because his parents are trying to save for a living somewhere and only send monthly financial support.Imho kinda sad.
      Simultaneously,younger people pursue better quality studies which offer more potential career opportunities,if you look at the uni rankings,well,you'll see what I'm talking about,it's not THAT BAD but if there's an alternative,one will go for the alternative.
      The population dropped by nearly a million in the last twenty years,may not sound like a lot but there's like 3.5M of us now,so you can kinda feel it.Even on a personal level,people you know will start vanishing noticeably as soon as you're done with high-school.
      Link for some numbers/statistics:
      statbank.statistica.md/pxweb/pxweb/en/20%20Populatia%20si%20procesele%20demografice/20%20Populatia%20si%20procesele%20demografice__POP010/?rxid=b2ff27d7-0b96-43c9-934b-42e1a2a9a774
      Moldovans have split their opinions about the EU,there's the pro-Russian part of population that stands pretty steadily against it and then there's also the more pro-EU part,it's hard to estimate which one is the majority but our current president is pro-Russia(but his election is said to be somewhat controversial and fraudulent,so idk ).It might be possible that we join the EU in the next like *100* years,maybe more,dunno,I'm just kidding.
