I love this video so much. I worked with a Moldovan who was one of the nicest humans I've ever met. Ever since, I've been fascinated with the region's history. This is the best overview of the entire history that I've seen.
I really don't know exactly what Moldovans think about Romanians, but I, as a Romanian, was educated by my parents to regard Moldovans as members of my own family, to regard them as my brothers. I hope to visit Moldova one day. All the best from Romania

From what I hear, they are fiercely nationalistic and want nothing to do with Romania. In fact, they call their own language MOLDOVAN which in fact is not, it is nothing but Romanian with 2 or 3 little changes. I asked my neighbors and they adamantly said: ""We are not Romanians and have nothing to do with Romanians." To me it is all politics. The people of Europe have spent thousands of years battling and killing each other over stupid labels. That's the way I see it. If all these tribes of Europe spent more time building something concrete and less time on STUPID games of identity they would fare much better.
@@gigikontra7023 Well...then you need to do some research. I live in Italy surrounded by Moldovans. As I said, my own neighbors to one side are Moldovans and I have had these conversations with numerous Moldovans for a long time. So if none of this is true, then Moldovans are good liars as this is not my information but what I've heard from Moldovans themselves.

There are Vlachs all across the Balkans outside of Moldova and Romania. With Vlach Shepherds and farmers moving as far north as Ukraine and as far west as Poland. Though in small numbers. And as far south as Greece and Albania. You can see stateless communities of Vlachs in every Balkanic country and every country that borders Moldova and Romania. Vlachs have migrated everywhere. It is said one in four Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks have at least one Vlach ancestor in the last 700 years.
They're the descendants of Romans, which is sort of a political identity more than an ethnic one, so no doubt the incoming peoples would have married together with the remainder of Roman peoples that lived in the area as the empire crumbled
I typed a super long comment basically saying how cool I think this part of history and the world is. But I think I can boil it down to: I read/watch _a lot_ about the Greeks and Romans and I hear a lot of these people and places mentioned in the background as the "barbarians" or places the larger empires were trying to conquer. Basically, I want to learn more about the places that were on the borders and frontiers of the Greek and Roman empires and what the people were doing at these times as well as all of the nomadic groups/kingdoms/empires that came through and where they went/who they conquered.
Its hard for us to know a lot about those peoples from the first hand, because most surviving accounts come from Roman, Greek or Byzantine sources (which most, as you mentioned, call them barbarians).

As a Moldovan I want to say that : I'm romanian. Moldovan means romanian. We are not russians, ucrains, or any others. Romanian means Wallach. There are Wallach Moldovian, Wallach Transylvanian,...
I mean yeah but Wallachia isnt used ( Valahia in romana ) instead the romanian country ( țara românească ) Republic of moldova is romania. And transylvania is romanian do you agree
My constructive criticism: 1. Address what Moldova refers to (it means two very distinct things: it refers to a region, most of which is in Romania, with its cultural capital in the Romanian city of Iași; and it also refers to a newly formed country, which is a smaller part of the historical region of Moldova - it's basically the chunk of the region of Moldova which was conquered by the Soviet Union, with its capital in Chișinău). Most Moldovan history in this video refers to the entire regional entity, not just the tiny new country. 2. When mentioning all of those peoples who came through the area, it would be nice to say something about them (e.g. an Iranian tribe which was very mobile due to its horse riding culture; a Turkic tribe that joined the Mongolian invasions; etc.)
Moldova is not a new country, it was one big country with Moldova which is in Romania and the capital was Iasi. And in that perioad of time Romania didn't exist.

@@KaiZen8888 ” And in that perioad of time Romania didn't exist.” - actually the term Romania is much older than the international-recognized modern state ”Romania”, and was used especially by Moldovan cultural elites to designate the group of lands inhabited by Romanians: Wallachia, Moldova, Transylvania. For example: ”Chant de la Roumanie” by Alecu Russo, 1850. Or Popescu-Scriban, writing (1838) that the best name for Moldova is Moldo-România because is inhabited by Romanians. Or Stephen the Great, naming his country MoldoVlahia, and the inhabitants - Wallachians (=Romanians).
I was born and raised in Chisinau, and what I can tell you about the current Republic of Moldova, as anyone can also draw the conclusion by watching this highly-accurate video, is that it is nothing but the legacy of the now, fortunately defunct, Soviet Union. The borders of the republic are nothing but what Khrushchev drew after Stalin authorized him to do so. OK, except the western border on Prut River, but which the Soviets in 1940, just like the Russian Empire in 1812, re-drew as the line of separation that split Moldova in half. The Principality of Moldova's legacy is that the western half that remained still independent united with Wallachia to set the foundation for what would become modern day Romania. In fact, the Principality of Moldova is a cornerstone, maybe the strongest one, of modern day Romania.
The country's name is the Republic of Moldova. Moldova was a medieval country that united with Wallachia and formed Romania in 1859. Before that, in 1812, the eastern part of Moldova has been occupied by Russia. The modern Republic of Moldova still remains a chunk of land taken from medieval Moldova (and hence Romania) which tries to get to EU, but since Russia thinks that this is their are on influence it opposes the unification with Romania or EU integration.
Not even in the time of ussr they not named Moldavia, the name was Moldavian sovietic republic! Only in the 1991 they came with the name Moldova which is inaccurate, Romania even was the first to recognize their independence, should opposed to name Republic of Moldova because implies they had some rights in the Moldova lands which united in 1859, which is not true. Republic of Moldova is not the heir of Moldova (which participated at creation of Romania's state).
@@MrQ454 You are right - Republic of Moldova is the stollen part of Moldova beyond Prut River , occupied by the Russians in 1812 . Excellent documentation! A few facts could be added. The Austrian Empire received a nordic part of Moldova, called Bukovina, from the Ottoman Empire for a while, the region being germanized. Bukovina is now split between Romania and Ukraine. Moldovans speak a language that is identical with Romanian. A Latin language that proves the continuity of population from Dacian-Roman mix despite the numerous migratory waves. The explanation of this continuation is that those invaders often were just a military elite governing the country and naming it after them. But not enough to assimilate the locals. Much like the Ottoman dominance. In 1939 Stalin and Hitler agreed to part Europa including Romania. Soviet Union got half of Moldova since then. Bulk of it is the Republic of Moldova but also includes lands to the south and north of it, that are now incorporated in Urkaine. The people in Romania, east of Carpathians (center of the country) are also Moldovans. During Soviet Union, Moldovans used Cyrilik alphabet for Romanian language in paralelel with Russian but returned to Latin alphabet afterwards. The flag of Moldova has the same colours as that of Romania and in the 90s the same anthem. The reunification with Romania is prevented by Russian troops stationed in Transnistria but will eventually happen. Many Moldovans have dual Romanian citizenship to travel and work in EU. At some point, most of the government was comprised of Romanian citizens.

@@mishacol legends can also be based on some truth. And in the region there were not only germans and slav. Dacian tribes went as far west as Vienna, and Vlach shepherds were documented in Slovakia.
Great video explaining the history of this country. Moldavian history seems very interesting especially with how it had the first ‘cities’ in Europe and the multiple ethnicities that were settled and nomadic. What happened to the Celts who settled there and who were they absorbed by and the last date we know they were there. Also have there been any discoveries of Dacian, Celtic or nomadic artifacts or ‘treasure’ in this country?
Hey, man! As a Moldovan I will try and answer. The Celts were mostly living as the neighbours of the Dacian tribes. There were constant wars between them, but the Celts never actually conquered the Carpathian basin. They began to fade away into history once the Romans began to arrive in the region. As for the artifacts, yes, there are plenty of them in the museums of Moldova and Romania. Our ancestors definitely had to deal with a lot of „visitors” ). There were numerous Dacian towns and fortresses. For example, the ruins of Sarmizegetusa, the capital of the Dacian Kingdom, still survive and can be visited.
Well, with regards to what happened to the Celts: in the S of the Romanian part of Moldova, there is a county called Galati. People still debate if it's from a slavic word or a celtic one like in the case of Galatia in Asia Minor, but if you look at genetics, the people in this area, tend to have about 5-7% celtic ancestry, which is more than double than that in the rest of the country. So although we don't have a clear answer, we have some pieces of the puzzle.

@@TheRealLuis1912 let us be clear. It was the Soviet Union that stole the land, that was then given to Ukraine. And if its western neighbours have decided that peace and good relations are more important, why cannot Russia, such a huge country with so much land, do the same?
Germany had East Germany. Romania has Moldova("the country") Both formed because Stalin wanted that to happen. The only difference being that after the USSR collapsed East and West Germany united. Moldova("the country") was still kept by Russia as a breakaway state/buffer zone that they can easily control because of how small Moldova is.

As a Moldovan, thank you for this video, I even found out some new things about my country. But, it should be mentioned that Moldovans are part of the Romanian people same as Transylvania (or Ardeal in Romanian) and Wallachia (Muntenia and Oltenia). We speak the same language, same cultural identity etc. Even though we started as separate states, as you can see in the video we were united several times and I belive will be united again in the future. We have the same ancestor (the Dacians). To better understand how we are the same people - all of us Romanians, you can look at the 4 Saxon kingdoms that later united into England, 4 separate kingdoms, but the same people.
Republic of Moldova could represent a for Romania a hotspot of separatism and military conflicts, so no thanks, I'd rather live in peace than dying in a useless war.
@@andreidiaconu8530 Well, I definitely agree with your sentiment especially with the way the world is going at the moment. However, there's only one area that would be a hotspot of separatist groups and insurgents which is autonomous self-governing region/state of Transnistria. They have Russian or Soviet leaning but they are so small that letting the region govern themselves would be beneficial for everyone. Plus, they would be a nice buffer from the Russians even though there are troops already there. Moldova and Romania would make a good pairing I believe but more of wishing thinking than a political reality right now.
@@bryanrobinson8886 If only you were right, bu unfortunately it is way more complicated than that. Beside Transnistria, there's also the Gagauz Autonomy which is also very pro-Russia, plus they already have threatened with secession in case republic of Moldova loses it's sovereignty(referring specifically to the union with Romania, they wouldn't mind if Moldova united with Russia, I bet you on that one). Other than these specific pockets of separatism, there's also the problem of the national identity of the Moldovans(who historically are considered part of the Romanian nation). In the Moldova between the Prut and Dniester rivers(aka Bessarabia) there was never a major movement of national cohesion to the Romanian nation(alongside the Transilvanians, Wallachians and the other Moldavians from Todays Moldovan region of Romania). Being annexed in 1812, when Romania as a state didn't exist and being kept apart from the rest of Romanians for about 200 years, is a certain recipe for denationalization and mass-brainwashing. So not only Transnistria and Gagauzia would represent a problem for Romania, but the entire Republic of Moldova, since the average Moldovan(who speaks the same language as us, the Romanians), doesn't consider himself/herself Romanian, and names their language "Moldovan", which is actually just a dialect, rather than a separate language. Dialect which I speak, since I am a Moldovan from Romania/Moldova region, but consider myself Romanian just like everyone who speaks my language natively. So the unification is just a silly myth, just like Santa Clause's existence! Which is totally fine by me, wasn't much of a fan anyway. It's 211st century, fighting for patches of territory, lost a long time ago is really fucking stupid.
@@andreidiaconu8530 Yeah, Gagauz region would be an issue but it is disjointed, less populated and to my knowledge doesn't have Russian troops there. I just thought it would be neat idea. The best chance of unification would have been in the 90s after the collapse of USSR and independence. Romania is not a perfect partner either since there pockets of Romanian Hungarians who rather be Hungary instead of Romania. It was just an idea but it is as likely as Bosnia allowing its Serbian regions to join a greater Serbia or Serbia allowing Kosovo region to unite with a greater Albania. So, it is just the concept of common nations uniting but it is not always ideal for everyone involved. The national identity of most nations came out the Romantic Era which are just national myths. Most people don't even know that Scotland didn't invite the klit, traditional male attire now but it is part of the nation's identity and story. Its hard for us to know a lot about those peoples from the first hand, because most surviving accounts come from Roman, Greek or Byzantine sources (which most, as you mentioned, call them barbarians).

Very well explained 👏
rumini tsigani hoti

Please refer to it as Moldovan if you're not willing to degrade us as humans
Well, with regards to what happened to the Celts: in the S of the Romanian part of Moldova, there is a county called Galati. People still debate if it's from a slavic word or a celtic one like in the case of Galatia in Asia Minor, but if you look at genetics, the people in this area, tend to have about 5-7% celtic ancestry, which is more than double than that in the rest of the country. So although we don't have a clear answer, we have some pieces of the puzzle.

He was very religious and faithful and he won many of the battles just to keep the country into Christianity and not loosing it to the turcs.
Hi I love your style of showing history on your shows I just wished they were twice as long with a bit more detail The maps and your pictures are great Thanking you 🙂
Great video! I love to see more quality content about the history of widely understood Eastern Europe. A video about Lithuania would be awesome. Better yet a joint video about Lithuania and Belarus, as their history is very much intertwined within the old Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
You cover so much and it’s great. You are an inspiration for video essays
Желаю процветания родной солнечной Молдове! La multi ani si multi bani, sanatate, bucurie și belșug în casa!
Благодарочка!
Moldova este a României,nu a ta !!!
The most underrated history in Europe if not the world
That’s correct. I grew up and studied in Italy and shamefully the european history here only considers italy, france, germany, austria, england and rarely spain
Ty so much, im from Prindestrovie and this video first on yt, which open-minded about Moldova
Thank you! I had just finished watching most of the others. You do great work!
I'm Romanian and the moldovian people are my people. Whatever happens to them happens to us and we will stand by them and we will fight with them and we will crush Russia
May the Wings of Liberty NEVER Lose a Feather Brother.
Do you think Moldovian would agree give up Transnistria to the Russians with maybe little adjustments, i think there's a river making a good natural border, maybe even they could give this part going to the sea(older Bessarabia) that is now in Ukraine XD. And not protest against Romania Moldova reunite. If i was Russian i would have try to make Romanian and Modolvans my allies^^
Thank you for making these. You can insert levity into the video without getting political or preachy (unlike some of Simon Whistler's writers) and still give us concise and correct information. Fantastic
I got so sick of seeing Simon Whistler everywhere that I just started "don't recommend this channel" ing every thumbnail I saw his face in. XD
@@planescaped Whistler is a plague. He has been for years. He vomits out endless amounts of content on such a wide range of topics that he can't possibly have any real depth of expertise on. I've been clicking do not recommend on him for years. Unfortunately, he still manages to weasel into my feed every so often.
@@seamusc9943 He formed an empire reading wikipedia articles to people. :P
„Sute de ani românii au fost, cel puțin indirect, stăpâniți de turci; niciodată, însă, în curgerea veacurilor, turcii nu au pus în discuție limba și identitatea română. Oriunde românii au căzut sub stăpânirea directă sau indirectă a slavilor, dezvoltarea lor firească s-a curmat prin mijloace silnice.”

Great video! I love the map and the fascinating history of a country up until this point I knew very little to nothing about.
Always a day when you upload 😌
I've been curious about this little country. Thanks!
My family comes from Suceava, the capital of the most respected and famous King, Stefan the Great. A few years ago , i made a genetic test, some family members followed. The interesting result was:
60% (+/-) non slavic balkanic, which can be considered dacian/getae; around 20% (+/-) gemanic (goth), and strangely enough finnic about 20% (+/-) (not sure why). Just a small amount (even it does not summ up) is mixed.
These results reflect exactly the history of that region. Dacia, Getae, Celtic, Goths, etc...
Beautiful! what company did you use for your test?
One must respect a country that has come back from the dead as many times as Moldova has. Are you ready for the Moldova challenge? Beat the ottoman empire as Moldova next time you play Crusader Kings.
speaking of the Gepidz, they are similar to the Goths and Heruli(other germanic tribes). through a process called "verreiterung" settled farming communities turn to horse riding civilisations. the same happened to the Finno-Ugric people of the Urals, the Magyars, that advanced into the steppe and assimilated the Turkic and Iranic ethnics and some traditions before they migrated West. i really hope you make a video on that phenomenon.
Great video. Best I’ve seen on Moldova!
Incredible content as always, thank you very much.
Always appreciate your videos, sir!
Feels good to have your country represented for once .
These maps have gotten so detailed
That region has some seriously fascinating history! unfortunately, Moscow 🇷🇺 empire is still occupying 1/3 of Moldova
Moldova wasnt really a powerhouse during the Soviet occupation,we were more of an experiment laboratory were they tested all kinds of stuff especially agriculture pesticides which destroyed the fertility of many of our soils
Respect from Albania . I have a friend from Moldova here in Albania and him and his family are very hard workers and respected people
I was drinking my father's homemade Moldavian wine while watching this video. Thanks for educating me on my own land. Cheers ;)
That is awesome!
I was in an advanced math class with a Moldovan student and she knew more then the teacher did at South Eastern Community College here in North Carolina. Very quiet though. She only spoke when called on. I was curious about her country, but she did not have anything to say about her history. I suspected this was a safe position in her country with it's association with Russia and did not press her for answers.
Americans don't know math. America is ruled from Beijing
Interesting as always, Epimetheus.
I recommend Moldovan wine. For 10 euro you buy a wine worth 200 euros if it came from France.
I woke up with a headache, and watched this video. Now I feel better ;-)
Perfect as always, you are the best.
Your videos are always so captivating!
Great Video Epimetheus, but one thing - how could you mention the Cucuteni-Trypillia culture without mentioning their ritualistic burning and rebuilding of their towns every roughly 50 years? it's such a unique defining feature of that culture and only occurred in Moldova and nearby regions of Ukraine and Romania. other than that I liked this video.
A shop in Carrick-on-Shannon sells Moldovan wine for E10 a bottle. Superb! Equivalent to a E25-30 bottle in Tesco. Thanks Moldova. Keep brewing 🤗 from Ireland
Kingdom of Hungary 1000-1526
Turkish pashalac 1540 -1699
Austrian Empire 1699-1867
Austro-Hungarian Empire 1867-1918.
4:40 the Kingdom of Hungary was dismantled in 1526 and stopped existing until 1867-1918
U make such cool videos. Great drawings too

People who have a common interest can work together but it's still up to the people to decide their own destiny.
@@andreidiaconu8530 this will pass over time there are learning romanian history. The one who still think that moldovans are not romanians are just people with very poor iq and isolated. Mahority of them are start realising that we are one.
Wow, so thorough! Great video!
