The distain for Southgate as United manager doesn’t come from the fact he’s boring it’s the fact that he would be massively unqualified for the job, his club management is laughable, the only reason he got the England job was a lack of other candidates and even though he has took them to finals/semi finals he has never won an important game where he wasn’t the favourite, it’s his fault for sitting back for 90 minutes after going ahead against Italy, his tactics against Croatia made zero sense just having Henderson punt the ball to no one, against France his subs coming so late arguably lost us the game, Rashford getting single digit minutes when he was in great form made no sense. He’s got a golden generation of players making him look good, he’s simply not a good manager, that doesn’t mean Ten Hag is the right guy or there are a load of obvious candidates out there but Southgate would be horrible United manager. If he became available tomorrow would any decent prem team take him, I don’t think so so why should United?

Jim, you are absolutely off your head on Southgate. The reason for the vicious disdain is because he's absolutely pony. He should be winning things with this squad. We will look back on this squad, in the same way we do the 2002-2006 England squad, scratching our heads to how we never won anything. The FA continually put the wrong men in charge of these unbelievable generations of footballers because they want yes men, and that's exactly what he is. You put a decent manager in charge of this team and we win silverware.
Footnote, he did try Club Management and was absolutely fucking wank at that as well.

Great pod Lads, long time listener and Doncaster Rovers fan. I awoke today as I do most days and pondered football. Immediately, I was drawn to the home fixture tonight at home in the second leg of the league 2 play-offs, where Doncaster hold a healthy 2-0 lead. Getting ahead of myself somewhat I was thinking of ways I could make a weekend out of it for my family and make it so my daughters first football game would be the play off final.
There was a moment of silence, a cloud began to darken the sun, before my Brain said to myself “One must beware hubris”.
My search for hotels, travel arrangements and activities immediately ceased.
To hear you say it today late on in pod today seemed very coincidental and brought the situation full circle. Where I am now extremely nervous much sooner to kick off than I would like to be.

Love you guys but...I think I can explain the anger, I felt it rising like a red mist listening to your defence of Southgate. In club management, Southgate completely failed and had a short stint a long time ago, and internationally, his "sucess" is very devisive. The anger comes from what can feel like gaslighting and massively underplaying his lack of experience and results by people like yourself and pundits (who often played with him as a team mate), strawmanning any dissent in that opinoin as "not sexy" is ridiculous and an example of this. There is no evidence he is a top manager, and it's particularly angering to hear people make a very surface level point to his "sucess" at engalnd, when we all know that as soon as you look beyond this surface level, fairly dismissive, takes about distance in tournaments, it's at least debatable, and at worst shows a pretty bad job.
I'm referring to the Nations League performance we don't talk about, persistance with 2 CDMs, lack of attacking patterns with the 2nd greatest talent in about 40 years, confusing awful decisions in team selections and subs (maguire, henderson ect, rashford, sakha, foden and grealish sat on benchs for key games we lost), awful record against top ranked teams, too many failures in key games (Italy, France, Croatia ect), falling out with Ben White, what he did to sancho, rashford and sakha with the penalties, just to name a few. As a Manchester United fan even I am gobsmacked by the narrative that hes "restored harmony in the squad" when Ben White refuses to play for him! When was the last time we had a player fall out in this regard with a international manager? Again, it seems southgate has the narrative around him and people don't engage with the serious criticisms of him, that's the angering part.

This is my opinion as a United fan on the current situation - beware, it is a long one ...
The majority of the fan base were excited by the appointment of Erik ten Hag. He has a very strong coaching background. He got Go Ahead Eagles promoted in his first season, been part of the youth set-up at Bayern and done well whilst learning from Pep, then did very well with FC Utrecht before excelling as manager of Ajax. People don't realise how much he improved Ajax, how they started to dominate the league and hoover up the domestic trophies. Not only that, they also overperformed in Europe, almost reaching the final in 18/19, then in 21/22 winning all 6 group stage games. Ajax hadn't been that side for a long time before he took charge.
Ten Hag wants to play proactive, possession-based, high-pressing attacking football - which he did whilst at Ajax. This is what we want as United fans. He's also got a proven record of giving youth a chance - which we've seen with Mainoo, Garnacho and Højlund. His signings of Onana, Martinez, Malacia, Eriksen, Mount and Antony also lean towards playing that way. So in terms of style of play and coaching credentials, he's what I want in a manager. Maybe he hasn't proven it outside the Dutch league, but sometimes you take that risk. Klopp had only managed in Germany and Liverpool are about to appoint Arne Slot. Arteta had never managed before. And we've had the likes of van Gaal and Mourinho - they didn't work either.
If we now look at the reality of his first two years at United. Last year we went from the mess that was 6th with Ole & Rangnick, to 3rd in the league. We won the league cup and reached the FA Cup final, as well as beating Barcelona over two legs in the Europa League. We also finished the season with the most clean sheets, so clearly something was working. It was a promising start, although we also had numerous poor performances against the top sides - beaten comfortably by the likes of City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle. But the hope was this season, we'd strengthen and be more consistent and competitive against our rivals.
Unfortunately, that clearly hasn't happened and right now, performances are probably the worst since Sir Alex left, conceding so many shots on our goal and unable to control games.
However, there are some reasons for this. Martinez, Shaw and Mount would've been expected to start most games - they've all been out for the majority of the season. Malacia, the back-up left back, has also been out all season, and for some reason we released Reguilon in January. So we've had no left-footed defenders basically all season, which makes playing out from the back much more difficult. Furthermore, Varane, Casemiro and Eriksen have also had periods out injured, so our defence & midfield has constantly been changing. People stress the need for a stable back four, and we haven't had that.
It's meant relying on players like Evans, Maguire, Wan-Bissaka and McTominay - players who ten Hag probably doesn't want long-term and was open to selling during the summer. Their technical limitations also make playing out from the back and dominating possession even harder. Not to mention, Casemiro has dropped off a lot this season and his looseness in possession is hurting us - his signing right now looks like a mistake, despite his positive influence last season.
Not only have we had problems in defence and midfield - Rashford has been out of form, Antony has off-field and on-field struggles. Plus, Martial's injury record and Sancho's behaviour has meant we've been unable to rotate the front line all season. The reliance and pressure on young players like Mainoo, Garnacho and Højlund isn't fair. They should be gradually integrated, not thrown in at the deep end.
There's a lot of excuses there, and I do think ten Hag could have adapted better to the injuries. Recent performances have been absolutely shambolic, and if not for the injuries and the credit from last season, he deserves to be sacked. But I also understand him not wanting to abandon his principles of play and go too pragmatic.
Ultimately, I think/hope he is still the right coach for Man United and he gets one more summer to prove himself. Let him sell the players that don't fit his style, sign a few that do, and hopefully start the season without any injuries. If performances don't improve in that situation, then it's probably time to move on. But look at Arteta, give him time and eventually Arsenal have got their reward. I hope the same will be said about ten Hag. With Onana, Dalot, Martinez, Shaw, Malacia, Mainoo, Mount, Bruno, Antony, Garnacho, Rashford and Højlund, we have a decent squad, although ~6 signings are probably needed to fill all the gaps.
However, it all depends on what the new structure decide - Willcox, Berrada, Ashworth, Brailsford etc. If they choose a 'game-model' and ten Hag doesn't fit that, or they don't believe he has the capabilities to reach the required level, then I understand them wanting a new coach to kick-start this new era. Despite this seasons performances, I believe it is exciting times for United looking forward. We finally have the right people in charge of making footballing decisions. Hopefully we see a marked improvement in recruitment, squad building, player contracts etc.
However, when looking at possible new coaches, I understand the negativity towards Gareth Southgate. He's done pretty well with England, no doubting that. Could he have done more? Possibly, considering we have the likes of Walker, Stones, Trent, Shaw, Rice, Bellingham, Foden, Sterling, Saka, Rashford, Grealish, Kane etc. More so than his personality, I'm more concerned his style of play is boring. Many England performances have been a bit drab. He likes to play with two 6's (i.e. Rice & Phillips/Henderson) and doesn't trust Trent at right-back. And because he's had limited coaching experience at club-level, at least not for a long time, we don't actually know his preferred style of play. Does he only play this pragmatic style to get through international knock-out tournaments? Or is it because he only gets limited time with the players so doesn't have chance to implement a more expansive, attacking style? Either way, it's a risk I wouldn't be eager to take.
If they're going to sack Erik ten Hag, I'd prefer we go for a coach with a proven record of dominant, proactive, attacking football. Maybe Roberto De Zerbi or Ruben Amorim fit the profile. I'd be worried about Tuchel long-term, Potter concerns me after his Chelsea stint and Flick also feels like a risk, especially considering Germany's results under him.
I'm not sure there's a clear candidate out there, but whether we stick or twist with ten Hag, hopefully we now have the right people in place to make the correct call.

Things that used to make me hard: fifa 14 on the ps3, I absolutely loved playing career mode. Taking my beloved Pompey from financial turmoil to the promised land of the champions league. But the best bit was transfer deadline day. Pressing “advance” brought the time forward by an hour but also gave a subtle but firm vibrate which stirred something from the depths of my 14 year old loins

Those are all great qualities for Southgate, but probably the most important is how good is he as a coach and does he fit the philosophy / style / vision that United need. That's where the reservations come in. They shout "Attack! Attack! Attack!" from the Stretford End - will Southgate do that? Will we dominate the ball and create chance after chance under Southgate? When we come up against the top sides, will we compete and win? Often England have fallen at the final hurdle, losing in tournaments to Belgium, Croatia, Italy, France, as well as disappointments in the Nations League. What is Southgate's preferred style of play? Does he have the stamina & motivation for an entire season, year in, year out? These are unknowns and personally, I'd rather stick with ten Hag than gamble on Southgate right now.
Let Southgate join a mid-table Premier League side like a Crystal Palace, Everton, Brighton, Fulham. Then we can fairly assess his ability as a coach at club level, rather than taking a risk now. Can he do what De Zerbi, Howe & Emery have achieved? Will he be more like Moyes - pragmatic, counter-attacks, playing for set pieces? Manager of Man United is one of the most important positions in world football and we need to start making the right decisions with a clear identity and plan of what we want to be. Imo Southgate doesn't inspire me and poses serious doubts.

Simon Jordan is indifferent to team buses. That is, until Martin Keown embarks on a misty-eyed nostalgia trip about how great the Arsenal team bus was 20-25 years ago and Simon's insatiable urge to disagree with Keown's every syllable is ruthlessly evoked. Martin's about to reveal a story about Sylvain Wiltord's crucial role in the seating plan, at which point Simon interrupts to emphasise how *pathetic* any team bus-based nostalgia is. Simon is almost spitting with fury while pointing his finger at Keown and continues to rage, saying that "anyone who holds weight in something as *frivolous* as where one seats themselves within long-distance motor vehicles is misfocused, misguided, and frankly, not worth listening to." All the while, Jim White makes fleeting eye contact with the Talksport producers, pretending to care that this will probably get a few hundred views on RUclips. Jim cracks the odd hint of a smile as, in his head, he is harking back to the days when he would just have to report on transfer deadline day news from Fratton Park on Sky Sports News. Simpler times.

James is right, that barber trip did happen to me that very same day. On the same day the new barber would spin me round on the chair and cut part of my hair whilst I was facing the sofas behind me, pushing me and letting me spin. The same barber refused to serve the Asian man behind me because he was racist to Chinese people. He said he didn’t like them because they own all the casinos in Manchester, and he lost 40k on roulette. He said he’d fuck up the guys hair if he had to do it and was glad the guy left. Awkwardly laughing along in fear of him screwing up my buzz cut, or worse giving me a skin fade. He wasn’t your traditional racist either. I had to laugh along as my life was at risk but I don’t subscribe to his beliefs.

I've got to be honest that first world cup and the semi final vs croatia where we were playing a 5-3-2 with absolutely no one marking either full back and we were just getting obliterated for possession and defending down both our wings and I could call it 40 pints deep 10 minutes into the first half and he never changed it was a big big big reason as to why this just disillusion with him started. Obviously recently he's started experimenting with 4 defenders and 4 offensive players and it's much better but he's also such a pragmatic boring manager with absolutely no expression picking safe players over form or talented players at creating chances and it's been shite to watch. Now he's got a top 3 player in the world in every midfielder and forward position and we're still not able to control games and create chances. For as much as you talk about the defense being weak, which it is. Argentina won the world cup with a back four of Molina, Christian Romero, Otamendi and Tagliafico ffs, it's not like they're worse that that!

  • @CoconutJewce

Southgate isn't a good manager. He's shown that by getting Middlesborough relegated 15 years ago, and then by the number of trophies he's won with an insane England team since then. If you're wondering why United fans don't want him, it's not haughtiness. Ask the question: Would Liverpool want Southgate? Would City? Arsenal? Chelsea? Newcastle? Spurs? If we're meant to compete with those teams, we can't be accepting mediocrity (where we are now, unfortunately). Obviously ETH isn't Pep or Ancelotti or even Klopp, but I still think he's a good manager that can at least get United to a point where we're comfortably top 4 every year. He just needs the time, some luck (i.e. 40-50 or so less injuries in a given season would be nice...), and a proper structure above him for the first since Fergie left.

What I've seen from Iraiola this season is a team who prefer to play on transition. They're not interested in dominating the game, rather to play fast on the break. Whilst it can be exciting to watch, I'm not sure replicating that at United would work. We are expected to have more of the ball than the opposition, we can rarely play as the underdog. I think Ole tried to implement a similar style with pace on the wings, looking for space in behind. But I don't think that's a style of play that wins you the league. Pretty much every top team dominates the ball. City have been the best for years and thats because they control the game and suffocate the opposition. Also, United fans want pro-active, high-pressing, attacking football. Not sitting back and countering. Maybe teams like Atletico, Juve and Inter play a bit differently. AC Milan play a 4-2-3-1 and have been fairly successful - but they aren't performing as well as Bayer Leverkusen for example. And arguably are not considered one of the top 10 or 15 clubs in Europe - which is where we want to be.
As a United fan, I'm tired of us not controlling games. You can see with City, Arsenal and Liverpool - the way to the top is to keep the ball. But not only that, you need a good rest defence, find the right balance. Spurs this season have dominated possession, but are too exposed on the counter. With a front 4, plus Sarr, Udogie and Porro in support, they leave Romero, Bissouma and Van de Ven isolated. Similar with Brighton - dominate possession, but leaky at the back.
Arsenal & City have such a solid base to build attacks from. Whether it's White/Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko/Kiwior, Rice and sometimes Jorginho/Partey. Or Walker/Stones, Akanji, Dias, Gvardiol/Aké, Rodri and sometimes Kovacic. Leverkusen have adopted a similar approach - they have Tah, Tapsoba, Hincapié, Palacios/Andrich and Xhaka.
This allows them to keep the ball, but also attack with at least 5 players at all time. Real Madrid are a bit more fluid, but still have those 5 players that predominantly remain deeper and keep the ball i.e. Rüdiger, Nacho, Mendy, Tchouameni/Camavinga and Kroos. Ancelotti tinkers with the starting XI, but usually has Carvajal & Valverde offering support to the front 3 of Bellingham, Rodrygo and Vini Jr.
Going back to Iraiola, the question would be, will he look to deploy a similar counter-attacking style at United, quite happy to surrender possession? Or would he adapt his tactics to the club and players available? If it's the first option, I dont think he would be the correct appointment for consistent, long-term success.

Southgate talk is madness haha - the blokes biggest achievement in the game is cultivating Luke Shaw and Bukayo Saka’s friendship. International football is miles off the standard of top level club football and England under Southgate lose almost every game against any top side. We finish bottom half next season and have a Chelsea under Potter/Lampard esque season if Southgate comes in. Absolutely nothing to do with the fellas name or personality haha. Best option for this summer is tell Ten Hag he has to play the style of football we know he’s capable of from his previous roles and give him another go unfortunately

I'm willing to give ten Hag the benefit of the doubt over many of the problems at the club right now. What I cannot forgive him for, however, is his seeming incapability to set up a balanced midfield. And we can't blame injuries for this because it was clear from the pre-season that he wanted to play Mainoo, Mount and Bruno as a midfield three. This is a horrific midfield combination with next to no defensive acumen at all, and we get ran through every single game without exception. And whats worse is he's had the answer in Amrabat but refuses to start him. Baffling to me Jim.
