  • The Glade team scores a bluebird powder day at one of the best resorts in the country!

    Curt: Glade Adapt - Blue
Nate: Glade Challenger - Polarized Silver Eclipse
We’re headed to Steamboat, which is two hours due north of Breckenridge. We originally were going to do a Backcountry episode today, but it snowed two feet, and Backcountry isn't super safe, so we're going to check out Steamboat.
I'm psyched because I've actually never skied it, so I think this will be a good opportunity to explore a new mountain and ski hopefully some fun stuff, but it was a bit of an early wake up this morning. We're watching the sunrise right now.
It's early January here in Colorado and we're in Steamboat because we were planning a Backcountry day today, but we got two feet of new snow. So we audibled and drove up here to Steamboat, which is super fun for us because it's often really nice to get out of Summit County and away from Breckenridge and all the crowds sometimes. Part of the perk of living in a town like Breck is that you get to buzz up to places like this when there's snow.
Really, right now is the start of the season for us. It's been a really, really slow start, so this is actually the first episode we've shot all year, mainly because there's been no snow. So we're cautiously optimistic that we're going to get some snow today. Nate was here yesterday and had a good report. They didn't open a lot of the upper mountains, so we're hoping that we're going to get some new snow and hopefully not a lot of lines. Based on what we've seen so far, it looks good, so we're psyched.
    Oh, I'm happy. There's no-one here. Don't tell anyone about Steamboat. It's a secret.
We found the lift lines. Hopefully, it's not like this for the rest of the day.
Hi, we're on take two because our camera man just forgot to turn the microphone on. What I was saying very eloquently before this was that Steamboat is known for having super, super light snow. A lot of people call it champagne powder if you want sound like an asshole, but we heard that yesterday... Well, the snow was actually pretty heavy and we were talking to a lift ops guy down at the bottom. He mentioned that in all of his 30 years of working here, yesterday was actually one of the most challenging days that he's had on this mountain. Because of the heavy snow, the amount of snow, and the fact that there was 60-70 mile an hour winds up here, I think there's probably going to be a lot of wind loading and a lot of good stuff on this backside of the mountain, which would bode well from the rest of the day. Looking around right now, looks like the snow is really good and it's pretty uncrowded, so we're psyched. Look at that view.
Steamboat's really well-known for just the sheer volume of Olympians that they produce. I think this town actually produces or has produced more Olympians than any other town in the US. Don't quote me on that directly, but I feel like that's on a plaque somewhere in town that I've seen, so there's definitely a really strong ski culture here.
The town has grown immensely in the past few years. That's much to the sugar-end of the locals, but it's a super fun town. The mountain access is really easy. It's far enough away from Denver that the crowds generally aren't bad. It does get crowded here. Actually, we just bought day tickets and I think they were like (what were they?) $220 or something. So it's certainly not an old school ski town like it used to be, but it's a super fun place. We often come here in the summer to come biking. Lots of good river culture here. Lots of good hunting, so it's a pretty quintessential Colorado town for sure.
Most of the lines we've been skiing today have been hiked too. Not really that big of a hike, but we traverse here or walk. But you can see over my shoulder, you can see with that camera, there is a ton of good background ski terrain around here. Also, lots of good stuff if you have a snow mobile, is really good. A lot of really good terrain around here if you're willing to work a little bit for it. Lots of sketchy terrain too, so don't duck a rope.
We're halfway through the day. Right now, I think it's 12:15/1 o'clock. It's been an awesome day skiing. It's not deep-deep, but it's soft. The snow's funky today. I don't know if you can see. It's graupely, so I think we're getting a little bit of a different experience than most at Steamboat, but no complaints. It's been a super soft day at Bluebird. Warm out. The mountain has been fantastic.
Something that we're noticing about the mountain is that it's probably a really good place to bring your family if you're looking for a place you can progress. There's greens, blues. Even some of the stuff we've been seeing today, it's not super steep. So I think this is a pretty good mountain if you're looking for a well-rounded ski experience. I would a 100% recommend it.

That brings back great memories of a couple of great days there. Bar U-E lift in the trees. I still hope to return there.

Nice vid. Flying out there in a couple days with our kids. It's their first time out west and being on an actual mountain. After my first visit to Steamboat years and years ago, I said I wanted to bring my kids out there and it's finally happening. My wife thinks it's funny how excited I am for them, but I can't wait. It's going to ruin skiing/snowboarding in Michigan for them though. I figure it may be busy Sat/Sun, but our last day on Monday should be great.

I am also from Michigan and a family vacation to Colorado when I was 13 started a trend of visiting big mountain resorts annually through adulthood. Now I live in Colorado and I remember fondly that first trip as magical. You may or may not have realized what an impact this experience might have been for your kids. Yes, it ruined MI skiing but I still held season passes at Alpine Valley and eventually Mt. Brighton and had a blast with my friends there. But I was always thinking of my next trip west. Your kids may be future Coloradans now and you'll have somewhere awesome to visit when you come to see them. I hope the trip was great!

Cool vid! There’s definately seems to be a charm to this resort. I’m Canadian and although these resorts look awesome, i don’t see the point of Colorado skiing given the crowds and cost. I can ski in British Columbia or Alberta for a fraction of the price, with way less lines, and the snow is as consistent if not better.

The crowds aren't bad if you know where and when to go. Not all of us can get out to British Columbia!

If you live in BC there would be little reason to visit Colorado unless you just want to check out other mountains. The cost of Colorado resorts is a bit out of control post COVID. We are heading to Aspen for a couple days and the total cost was insane. The flight was very affordable and convenient (airport 10 minutes from Snowmass) at least. If the flight wasn't so economical I would go elsewhere.

how's the snow in mid december? we normally hit up Breck, but it's just been getting out of hand.. however given altitude i'm thinking probably best for early season skiing.. don't have our normal options for travel this year, so trying new places. thanks and great vid

Breck / A basin are usually a safer bet in mid December, but it varies wildly year to year. At that time of year it's probably better to optimize for exploring a new town or planning activities other than skiing, as there is usually only a small amount of terrain open at every resort.

Indeed, that was the joke - coupled with the subsequent shot of the gigantic lift lines.

Steamboat is on the top of most Beginner Resort and Family/Kid Friendly Resort lists so it gets plenty of publicity. Not a hidden gem by any means.

Lift ticket prices are high for a reason. Thank your local trial lawyers! That's who gets the money!! Not ski company shareholders

This is not true. Legal and insurance fees are not material to ski areas financial health. Right from Vail Resort 10k: "the accruals for such loss contingencies (excluding the employment-related litigation) were not material
      individually or in the aggregate."
