@@pama.6410 I've been wanting the brick wall in my kitchen done with the German schmear technique for 10 years. My husband has recently started watching Danie with me. I told him if he comes home & my hair is lavender (currently white), he'd better watch out for a total kitchen tear out!!
I have lots of little cubbies/ nooks that my husband built into walls for me. I love them! Most of them are small areas which made it very hard to spackle, but they look awesome holding just one item or a small collection. We also did a recessed mirror in the foyer! Everyone loves it!
This turned out amazing! Congrats on finding that home reno unicorn: opening up a wall and it NOT turning out to be full of HVAC, electrics, plumbing, or mice 😆
I can relate to this! We really wanted to add some built-in storage in my kids' bathroom behind the vanity, but when we opened the wall, there were pipes and wires everywhere, and just no way it would happen.
I actually love that the arch doesn't look perfectly smooth - it makes it look like it's been there for a lot longer. Especially when you take it in with your beam on the ceiling, it looks original. Love it!
Usually 1/4" drywall is used with scoring of the back much closer together on the arch to create a smoother arching. That said, I like that the shelves are built in and it adds interest to your home's kitchen area. You have great design instincts. Your reworking of your spaces are really creative and livable.
Best thing you've done in your house EVER!! I'm in love with the shelves passing over the sides and the fact that its not perfect is what makes it so perfect to me! Congrats Danny, you knocked it out the park! Love always, from Johannesburg, South Africa 🤩💖
I have to ask you guys, do you know about "Ain't Gonna Play Sun City"? Little Steven of Bruce Springstein's band started a boycott to end apartheid. I never hear anyone mention it, only Nelson Mandela. Little Steven is still alive and I think he deserves props.
II's beautiful, and I love your "Embrace the imperfections" mindset. I want to make one! Especially into the gallery rails. I have a time-saving tip for your next drywall project: 20-minute mud is a game-changer for being able to save nearly a day of drying time. You can't use it for your final coat - doesn't sand as easy - but it is brilliant for the first coat. I buy it dry and just mix as much as I need. Vancouver Carpenter is my favourite RUclipsr for drywall advice - he's made me a much better drywaller.
This has nothing to do with shelves, but those clogs in your kitchen holding plants…. *genius* I’ve had a pair of wooden clogs I thrifted for a LONG time and hadn’t figured out what to do with them and now I know EXACTLY what to do with them!!! Also the shelf turned out gorgeous! Definitely a new subscriber here!!! 👋🏻
Thank you for the words of encouragement for people like me who fear an ugly, unprofessional outcome. What's funny is that I just had an epiphany this year regarding that very thing. I said to myself, "Why should you expect a professional looking outcome when it's your first attempt ever?!" Lol! I realized how silly I'd been, and that the only way to get better is to practice. Right now, I have a number of projects that need finishing touches (stain). I've made a plant bench, a hanging plant tray as well as a plant "stool" with leftover material. Just to get away from the plant theme, I also made a bath tray. Yes, they're all simple, and if someone should see them they'd be kind of meh about it. It doesn't stop me from being proud of what I've accomplished. (I left off my fireplace rehab. That one has me a bit overwhelmed at the moment.) Thank you for another great video!
If I had my own home, I would T O T A L L Y do this!! You said arch and I saw you making cuts in the drywall to do it, then you said and did it. lol You NAILED it bestie!! I love it!!
Oh WOW!! It looks beautifully awesome!! Literally hanging sheet rock today in master bedroom reno!! Using my Grandmothers antique kitchen buffet for double sink vanity in master bath. Have a space between mirrors and sconces above vanity, and since I still have that wall to build....i'm gonna use your DIY and make an insert between mirrors!! OH......MY.....GOSH!!! IT'S GONNA BE AMAZING!! So wish I could send pics to you!! You have inspired me to do that little extra to make my hubby and my forever home a special "getaway" that we will enjoy for years to come!! Keep bringing us these great ideas!! I LOVE them!!
I LOVE it! What really sold me on my current house is that it has an old fashioned arched nook in the wall for a telephone, as well as an arched opening between the dining room and kitchen. 1950's charm.
Oh no! I really liked that spoon wall art! But the alcove is also really beautiful and I appreciate it if peoples’ home design is dictated by the love for their pets.
I swear we are related somehow. I have ALWAYS wanted to do something like this and I own like a hammer and maybe a handsaw. 🤣 This came out great!! And guess what! Monday my husband and I are going to be buying a home!!!! So I better get some more tools because MY HOME NEEDS THIS!! Thank you for all your encouragement and inspiration and goofiness. You're my people for sure. 💖💖💖
I love this. Reminds me how older houses sometimes had niches like this for a home telephone. I’d love to do this with a wall outlet to charge cell phones.
My grandfather's home had one of those back in the day and I loved it. It was in the hall by the bedrooms. I was thinking how I'd love doing something like that in my 67 year old home but it's plaster and lathe so I'm really not prepared if something goes wrong. Too scared.
Dear Danie, I come from Slovakia, Bratislava and I have been watching you and your diy projects for some time ... Just wanted to tell you that you are so inspiring, love your work keep on diying! with love Lucia

Wow! This diy rocks haaaaard!! I got to say, halftime into the video I realized how much I needed your positive and creative spirit today. Thank you fo that. PS: I may not start a diy this weekend, but after the video I got up from the couch,re-arranged some shelving and voila! A designated coffee/tea bar was born. Thanks Danie. Truly. ❤
I think this project is in the top three among the projects you have done. she was simply gorgeous and seeing the happiness on her face made me happy too.
Dani, this is b-e-a-utiful! Well done. I love it! And your enthusiasm/how proud of yourself you were is just giving me life! 😎😁🥰🤘 Also, your editor needs a big fat raise! This was very well put together. 👍
Is an easy way to curve drywall is to wet one side bend it, then let it dry into the curve. You might have to do it a few times to get that tight of a curve. There is also 1/4" drywall that might work better. You did a great job with the materials that you had.
I do not understand why you're not at 1 million subscribers! I look forward to your content all week long! This was so inspirational. I loved it. Thank you so much for sharing with us each week❣️
Love this Danie! Years ago I cut a hole in the wall behind my bathroom door and created a tall medicine cabinet. I didn’t drywall it in, but instead made a box to fit. Screwed it into the studs, added glass shelves and used a wood carving from Bali as the door. It was one of my proudest DIYs.
Our owner and landlord of our apartment build an inset shelf in the bathroom next to the sink and i love it. Normally we only had closed storage in the bathroom and therefore not a much decor, but now i can style this shelf!
I start my Saturdays with DIY Danie, a bagel, and a cold coffee (cuz I need the caffeine but can't handle hot first thing) ...what a great start to the day! I was wondering just what magic you were going to do to get the arched top...kerfing drywall, never would have thought of that. I love a good niche in the wall, nothing sticking out to get knocked off and extra display/storage space.
Love what you did. I would like either to add a transom above the door to my powder room or do a cut through and add stain glass to add natural light to the space.
Love it! I hated some of the 80s/90s useless niches but this 😘. Such a beautiful and useful niche. I'd definitely do one by a back door or as a spice rack in the kitchen. I'm looking at all my walls differently now.
Oh, my God, you’re the best start to my Saturday. I live to see you early in the morning. I have this idea on my mind for my bathroom. I have wanted to remodel for a long time.

The imperfections make this project PERFECT! Absolutely love how the arc looks a little imperfect, which makes it look like it has been there from the start and has adjusted with the house 🏠 The wood extending past the drywall is a nice touch! This is one of those projects I feel like I could take inspiration from and tackle myself, if I didn’t live in an apartment lol
thanks, Danie! this was the first video I saw of yours and it won me over. Your bright personality is so contagious and makes me feel like I can do it, too. We already have an inset shelf in our basement, I "just" need to add the shelves. I'm aiming for a similar style as yours. Thanks!!

Danie, you should be extremely proud of the nook! Oh all the future joys you're going to have with different decor! And loved the pep talking to us to try things! Thanks!
Quite possibly my favorite DIY of yours to date! So simple…such a statement and practical use of space in a high traffic area! The arch and gold rail are just beautiful 😘🤌✨
I always love your energy, creativity, and aesthetic, but this time I just need to mention how great your hair looks! Love it! Of course as always the project is to die for!
This is just excellent! You are part of the reason that my husband and I had the nerve to turn half of one of our bedrooms into a bathroom and knock down the rest of that bedroom’s walls to make a larger living room. We make mistakes. We fix them. 👍🏻 Boop! 🤚 🖖🏻
I haven’t watched the video yet but I am SOOOOO jazzed at this project as I have a plan to do the same thing and I love that I can watch you do it Before I give it a go!!!!! Yay!

When I frame the wall w/ door, I'll also frame out the window-like area for the wall shelves on each side of the door. I'll go back & fill those in with sheetrock, shelves & gallery rails afterwards. Love, love, love this. Never done anything like this before today, but you've inspired me.🎉
To be honest, I actually love that's it's not "perfectly" shaped. It goes with some of the rustic/vintage pieces of furniture and decor in your house that feels handmade by people before the time of power tools.....with a touch of brass glam! Lol. Like old school craftsmanship! I absolutely love it! And I wish you could come to Georgia to help me build some!
a) This is beautiful
b) This solves a dilemma I've had for TWO YEARS about how to get a shelf in the wall behind my front door! Thanks Danie
How is the hole in your wall? Coming along nicely?
😬 I’m sure it will work out…
Seriously, I bet it will be great!
Lol!
No turning back now!!! That's one way to get things done!!!

Nooks and crannies give a home so much character. What a lovely way to add to yours! Nice job, Danie.

Nothing short of impressive! I also love how the wooden shelves extend past the opening.
Right?! I love it too!
@@DIYDanie Yes! The shelves look like what you see in very old homes in places like Italy where the shelves are built into the plaster walls.

Same. Haha. But I've been nervous to paint an arch 🤣
The arch is not very deep, you can build it on the surface of the wall.

I would’ve added lighting but it looks great. ❤
The fact that it isn’t as smooth in the arch adds so much character though, like it’s made waaaay back when, and just very handmade :))
