Shara, "WOW!" That's all I can say. And from an empty field. A lot of work and an incredible result. All you need now is a place for Lucy to rest her bones and some seating for you and maybe even your Husband to rest your weary bones while you watch your garden grow! I don't see much grass growing under your feet though. I bet your burning up thar note pad you showed us last week right now! You've got me motivated. Thanks for Sharing!
Thanks so much! We definitely need some seating out here and a place to hang out. Eventually we want to add a patio area, but we have to have some work done on the yard first so the land slopes properly--away from the house haha. I'm glad this inspired you and I really appreciate you watching. I've got plenty of scribbles in my note pad--now I just need to bring them to life!
What a lazy Saturday for me! Just now getting around to your video instead of racing to be the first to comment (after my careful listening for any words are hard moments!). Truthfully, it’s nap time, so you may have slipped some by me, but I did catch you talking about your dead yard, and a flat spot, but I can’t believe you didn’t follow it up with claiming that you’d selected a “dead-flat” portion to work in!! Okay, nap time, and I’m kind of happy I was so tired watching your video the “first” time, because that just ensures that there will be at least a second time today. 😉 😊
Lazy saturdays for the win!!! I hope you enjoy it! I'm jealous--I need one of those! I got up early and did some plumbing and drywall work in our bathroom remodel and now I'm just grumpy. I think I'll follow your lead and take a nap haha. I'll try to add some words are hard moments in my next video ;) stay tuned. But in the mean time...enjoy your nap and the rest of your weekend!
@@WoodshopDiaries Yes, plumbing and drywall are four letter words to me, things definitely not to be undertaken when a nap will suffice, so I completely understand being a grumpy butt. Hope your weekend turned out better, and to tide me over until your next video comes out, I think I’ll have to stalk around your old videos and IG, see what else I can give you a hard time about! 😉
Pretty tough starting out on a crazy open big flat field. I'm sure this is just the beginning, and look forward to seeing what else you come up with. What tarting from scratch trees and the likes are so slow growing in.
We have quite a bit of yard at the new house--we are excited to put it to good use and plant some trees, gardens, vines, etc. Thanks so much for following along and for watching!
I think the struggle bus is full! Some people admit they're on it and some are in denial. But the truth is, most people are passengers haha. So glad you enjoyed the project and the video. Thanks for watching!
Brilliant build, i left you a message once when you were showing us around your new home, about how it was a shame that you did all the garden builds at the other place then moved, glad that you did this build and the plans as well, hopefully more outdoor projects to come. Stay Safe, Barry (ENG)
Thank you! Yes, I was very sad to leave our old garden behind. I hope the new owners enjoy it as much as we did. But we have a lot more room here that we are gradually setting up to have a much bigger garden. So...pros and cons haha. We will be working on it all summer I'm sure so lots more outdoor projects are on the to do list!
That turned out great and it's nice that you used readily available materials since some things are in short supply now. I know you'll get endless enjoyment from your garden! Looks like Lucy and the kitty were out having fun with you too. I read your reply to another post and had to laugh. Can't imagine it snowing when our temps are mid 90's today. I'll try to send some of our AZ sunshine your way!
Yes, please send us some Arizona weather haha. As long as I've been alive, I don't think it's ever snowed here in April before this year...but we had 70-80 degree days in December with some monster tornadoes, so I think the weather needs to sober up a little. It's crazy. Hopefully that's the last of it though and warmer weather is here to stay :) I hope you stay cool there in the 90s!
Now how did you know I'm building a raised garden bed? Just a small one though. Almost finished, and what I should be doing instead of playing on my phone. Edit: Good job on that as always. 👍
Haha playing on your phone is the worst sometimes. You look up and it’s a hour gone 🙈 I’m guilty of that too. I hope you enjoy the day and get that garden bed finished 🔨🔨 happy building!
I was looking at using cedar pickets to use around my IBC wicking beds and your video was really helpful in deciding on a design, especially the arbor. Thanks a lot!
Nicely done . Depending upon your climate conditions, you might need to allow a quarter inch gap between sideboards, for drainage? Soil loss is less of a problem than root saturation. Another great project, brilliantly presented. Thanks👍
Hey, what a treat to have your video pop up just when I logged in! Love this design - nice and simple, yet elegant (like all your stuff)! I just finished building 6' high picket fence with a 7' wide double gate - I've become a big fan of the Fasten Master timber screw line. They do look nice, but they carry huge loads too! Cheers!
For sure! The timber screws are my FAVORITE! Thanks so much for watching and I really appreciate the kind words. That sounds like a pretty big project you just finished--I bet it looks amazing!
You are great in winging it and the result is awesome. You could grow hop (if that is the same word in english) and you can brew your own bear, beer? Yeah, beer. 🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍👍
Thank you! Hey...whatever works--even in the driveway, at least you have a garden you can enjoy :) And on the plus side--you don't have to mow around them ;)
Really beautiful work, Shara! 😃 It's really fun to plant vegetables as well! To eat something you grow yourself is fantastic! Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
We LOVE having a garden! You're right--it's so rewarding to reap a harvest from what you planted yourself :) I hope you are well and have a great weekend! Thanks so much for watching!
I built one of these over the weekend. I combined both sections in the middle and left the 4x4 posts on one end 6 feet tall so that I could grow some vine cucumbers on that end. I ended up having to use 1x6" x 6' fence pickets as the 1x8" we're special order and I would have had to wait a week to get them. Happy accident because as my planter was 4 feet by 12 feet in size I had to move around 3000lbs of bagged dirt to fill the thing and that was an effort. Thank you for the cedar plank design, it was easy and turned out great!
Very nice build Shara! Your idea to use the landscape fabric inside and outside is a great idea. Should help prevent those pesky weeds! The cedar fence planks sure come in handy! I cut them down and trimmed the windows in our cabin with them. Works great! Once again, this is a wonderful outdoor project for the spring. We’re at our mountain cabin this morning in East Tennessee, and it’s snowing this morning! No accumulation, but it’s fun to watch! Keep on building Shara! Have a great weekend!
Well done and nice design as always. I can't wait for some drier weather in Northeast Ohio to get started on some garden and outdoor projects. Unfortunately the back yard is a swamp right now. Thanks for another inspiring video!
Thanks so much! I hope your backyard dries up soon. It seems like its raining every other day and it's pretty wet here as well. Makes it hard to mow, or do anything outside. These dang April showers 😂
What a great looking set up. I love the way you are able to "modify" on the go to meet your preference, but to make things not only practical, but darn good looking! It seems like your an artist wrapped up in a wood craftsman body. Just really neat. This video made me want to get out and play in the soil, however it's snowing right now where I live, so I either wait or move to a warmer climate...I'll have to think on that. Very enjoyable video as always!
Haha I understand that. It snowed here yesterday too. The weather is nuts! The frost actually got my tomatoes between the time I planted and the time I posted 🤣 gonna have to redo that. But eventually summer will be here and maybe you can play in the soil soon 🙌😎
Another awesome video!! I rarely think about using other types of wood than construction lumber. Inspiring to say the least. I just bought that Ridgid Miter saw. I love that thing. Keep up the good work. Love your videos so far : )
Thanks so much for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it :) The miter saw is a BEAST--it was a little scary when I first started using it because it was so much bigger than my older one haha. Hopefully you can build some awesome things with yours! Happy building!

I've been debating on a surface garden bed or a raised one. Now that I see you put one on the ground I feel better about trying that since we probably have the same animals and such. Unless youbhave some tricks to keep them out??
We will make a large acre or two garden in our field and keep this for my small plants like tomatoes and cucumbers. So we will have both. Not sure what issues we will have with animals in the new house, but in the old one, we had issues with bunnies and we installed a little electric fence around it. It didn’t work though. They still got through 🤣 I guess that’s just part of it.

Cedar will last a long while outdoors and is safe to use in garden beds for food whereas treated is not since it’s full of chemicals 👍
